Honestly, the lay-offs and recession was long time expected since 2 years. The big companies were over hiring and offering lucrative packages during pandemic. Classic example of bad financial actions. But they will still do that because they would make the most of the profiteering during Covid. They don’t care to lay off later. Thus, people should have been foresighted and planned accordingly. Also, I think that being in small company and core industry helps because there are likely more dependancies on you. While in big companies, you are likely to go redundant.

What I noticed was that many professors in IITs have done their PhD from abroad but most of them are teaching in India now. I think as far as a career in academia goes, there are better job prospects in India itself. There are many assistant professor jobs here but in Canada there are tenure track jobs if I am not wrong and the competition for that is a lot.
Solution? PhD is not everyone's cup of tea nor US is the only advanced country with jobs. I skipped the entire process of overpriced overhyped MS-PhD in US altogether and tried for tech jobs in EU. I got three job offers in Berlin itself. My starting salary as a fresher is 60K euros a year.
