- Join me and my daughter, Maddie, on an Eastern Oregon desert trip, featuring my favorite place in Oregon, The Steens, and a hike from near its 9700’ peak down through vast fields of wildflowers to the pristine and beautiful Wildhorse Lake.
See spectacular gorges on the flanks of Steens Mountain from our drive on the Loop Road, and a hidden gem to the east of Steens, The Pillars of Rome. Join us for a spin on the Alvord Desert's playa and a drive up to Hart Mountain Antelope Refuge where we viewed skittish Pronghorns and were greeted by curious horses.

Thank you as well, for tuning in; the beauty in Oregon never stops.
New subscriber, love that part of our wonderful state thank you.
Thanks for subscribing, and yes, it is a wonderful state. Black Rock Desert & the surrounding area are spectacular, as is Rte. 95 between Reno & Las Vegas.
Great video! Was the steens mt loop road fully open or was the road still blocked. Thanks for sharing.
It was closed on the south leg reportedly due to erosion of the road or a landslide. Thank you for tuning in.
Another great video! I knew there had to be another way to get to Plush/Hart mtn.could you share the route /roads you took? Thanks!
Sure thing! The most beautiful route is from the west {I live in Eugene} - Highway 58 across Willamette Pass, connect to Route 97 heading north to La Pine for 17 miles, then Highway 31 for 130 miles {heading SE} - a most spectacular road through beautiful valleys lined by mountains on both sides, small towns {really small!}, then US Route 395 for a few miles, then route 140 for about 15 miles, then a cut-off road {I don't think it has a number} directly to Plush. From Plush, head north about 10 miles on a paved road to HART MOUNTAIN, climb the mountain on a gravel road, then 44 more miles on gravel across the plain and drop down into French Glen at the base of STEENS. You will most certainly see Pronghorns along the way - you need to look for them as they are small & tend to stay back from the roads. I think Google Maps will direct you along this route.
did you say Buring Man sounds fun. the phone booth was a nice find
Yes, Burning Man - just got back. More than fun, life-changing. We will be posting a video in a week or two - I expect it will be one of our best efforts ... Thanks for watching.
You lost me when the blue toenails went into the lake.
