The New York rapper explains that he first met the "Like a Virgin" singer while they were volunteering at a children's hospital, and Big Daddy Kane was impressed with Madonna knowing his lyrics. The same day, Madonna asked the "Set It Off" rapper if he wanted to be in her photo book, but gave no clue as to the details of the content.

I was reading through Lipstick Alley's message boards regarding Big Daddy Kane's profile on "Unsung". Regarding the Madonna issue, apparently, people back in the early '90s, still didn't know what to make of a big, masculine black man like Kane being overtly sexual with a white woman like Madonna.
Also, others have said that Kane's image and music started to get soft. He started wearing purple ropes and speedos, and then got robbed a couple of times back home. That all but caused his street cred to be thrown out of the window. LL Cool J arguably did a much better job maintaining a "sexy rapper" image when compared to Kane, who seemed sleazier.
Somebody else said that Big Daddy Kane really fell off when he started trying to be the Barry White of hip-hop by talking all deeply through his rap love songs. Kane perhaps didn't let his career develop organically as it seemed like he was trying to do everything.
I recall hearing MC Lyte on the "Unsung" profile on Big Daddy Kane say that the Madonna photos were just way, way too advanced for the hip-hop community at the time.

Madonna has sold over 300 million physical singles and albums not counting digital , 3 albums that have sold over 30 million copies alone , mind you she hasn't updated her sales in years so it will be way more, her tours have changed the way artists presented their music live , videos changed MTV , physical singles .Also she put Gay Culture into mainstream media , brought HIV/ AIDS discussions , charities into the frontlines , changed how sexuality and sex were presented & discussed , No disrespect ,all very talented people, but Literally you can put Beyonce , Gaga , Rihanna , Taylor Swift , Rihanna , Drake , Ariana all together and still not equal how famous & impactful she was at that time and for pretty much many decades . Also Madonna was this big and more without UA-cam , Instagram , Internet , Tik Tok ,fake trending topics or chart manipulations to get a number 1. Everything she did was legit a moment , each song and video lasted for months , her album cycles would last 3 years off one album . Aura Gawd I loved Madonna growing up, from jump street. Rocked with her up until about 2000. However, don't leave out Donna Summer as an icon who pushed the door open on open sensuality in female pop music, from the 70s into the 80s. Prince and Rick James' proteges helped set that stage as well and Madonna came in and put poetry to it. She took it to the grand stage and worked the system like a champ. Salute to Madge, a pop legend (and yes, Black folk know that!)

Was MJ still the biggest artist by 92? Around the time Madonna’s book came out? I know Dangerous was 4x Platinum but I remember by the early 90s he was already losing popularity. He was the butt of jokes for his looks, that Black or White video premiere where he turned into the Panther was kind of weird and shows like In Living Color were always trashing him. There was that changing of the guard at the time with grunge and gangster rap coming out.

I really can't blame Kane for doing the shoot at the time though. I of course, don't absolutely know if this was his motive, but I wonder if Kane did the shoot in order to get his name out. As he said, many of the kids that he saw at the hospitals didn't know who he was. So if you align yourself with the biggest female pop star (and maybe pop star in general) at the time, of course you're asking for better mainstream coverage. At the time, it's pretty safe to consider Big Daddy Kane a victim of "pop culture isolation". Plus, it wouldn't surprise me if Kane thought that he owed Madonna since she was a fan of his and was telling the kids in the hospitals about him.
