I've been using a Chinese k40 cutter for some time now. I never use it with the lid open, never without goggles, and never without the extractor fan. Their are many safety concerns here.
I understand your concerns but this is just for demo purposes as I couldn't have a cover on and show it in use. For prolonged use (when not being filmed) I have a different setup.
Hi Andy. I was impressed with the capabilities of this laser cutter but I’m afraid my IT skills are zero. How easy would you say it is to use, in particular loading your own designs? I like the etching effects on stainless and aluminium, would it be capable of etching or cutting through 5, 10 and 15 thou brass? I tend to model buildings from plastic kits or in plastikard, Slaters brick, and Wills builder sheets and would love to see how it copes with those (particularly the Wills sheets as they are thick and quite difficult to cut windows and doors in). Whilst looking at new methods I’m of the opinion that a 3D printer would be of more use, with their ability to create surface textures as well as shapes and even print loco bodies. The price point of resin printers are now much more affordable and resolution in £300-£400 machines being very good. Hopefully one of the manufacturers will send you one to try out 😊 Looking forwards to your next video. As an aside despite having turned on the bell and asking for notifications of new videos I don’t seem to be getting them pop up. I don’t know if this is a problem with my settings or UA-cam. All the best, Mark.
Hi Mark. I have spent a bit of time getting to know the Lightburn software but I'm still very much a beginner!! It's fairly simple when you know where things are. I have just been creating some module signs, one of the Staverton buildings and a Staverton crossing gate and they came our pretty well (next video). I haven't tried plastic or brass yet but I'll have to look into it - we could try to arrange for you to have a go on it! A 3D printer would be very nice if I could get hold of one. Look forward to seeing you at the shop soon. Best wishes Andy
@@DartsideScenics hi Andy. that’s an offer I can’t refuse. Thank you. It would be interesting to see how it coped with Totnes Riverside station building. There, that’s a challenge for you 😁

laser engravers with out hoods are very dodgy. The fumes are often toxic and the laser can blind you from just a reflection. With most of these “budget” lasers included safety Goggles are not actually safe to uses offering little to no real protection.
Yes, they are not to be taken lightly but the setup is very different when I am not filming what it can do. The problem with showing it in use is that it's difficult to have the cover on, etc.
Have seen this sort of review many times (no criticism of your performance intended) whereby a trusted / inspirational modeller (yes you definitely fall within this category 😊) is sent a product to promote via their channel. To be honest (and this is probably directed at the manufacturer / distributor) I want to see what it can do for me as a modeller, rather than what is in the box. For instance, can it cut/engrave the material we use most often? i.e. cereal box cardboard, grey card, Wills / Slater’s plastic sheet, acrylic etc. Again, for the manufacturer, before I part with my hard earned money, I would like to see a project being carried out by the reviewer which is pertinent to the hobby / pastime their channel is dedicated to. For me and again no criticism of Dartside Scenic intended, this is just another hobby laser unboxing video and doesn’t encourage me to buy one
Hi. This is the first time I have done this sort of thing and I agree that a lot of the videos are similar. There is a certain criteria to follow which limits creativity but I'm currently working on a second video in which I have a bit more freedom. There is also a time limit which, again, limits what you can do but in the next video I'm trying my best to offer something interesting and model related for viewers.
My laser cutter is an Atomstack A40 Pro and is so good for cutting out my wood for my buildings
I wish we had time to talk about laser cutters on Saturday! Next time!
