The Buddy timer is genius. One time when my son was two and I was the only parent home for the weekend, I had a massive "go stupid" migraine. Our elderly dog needed to go out but I couldn't walk her because my toddler son was in the tub waiting for me to turn on the water. So in my migraine stupor, I let her out into the night time dark front yard. Ordinarily I would have clipped her to the yard post & leash (set up specifically for such a situation). But...migraine stupidity. Then my son had a meltdown because I had left him sitting in an empty, dry tub and I immediately forgot the dog ever existed. I slammed the door shut and ran upstairs. I finally got my son bathed and into bed. And more importantly my medication worked its magic. I remembered the dog! I lose all sense of passing time during a migraine so I have no way of telling how long it had been. Unfortunately the old dog had been outside so long, she was picked up by animal control. We got her back the next morning but one of my migraine rules is no animal outside without a leash. Ever. Even in a fenced in backyard. (Migraine Rule #1 - baby safety first! Rule #1a - never leave toddler alone with water in the tub. And that's why he was loudly frustrated about sitting in a dry tub)

Sleep kittens, my narcolepsy alter-ego, ALSO has rules, and she can also be trained. For instance, I now “make a living” (lol, what an utter joke) as an author. Sleep kittens get GREAT ideas, even if half the time they barely make any sense. She’s been trained to document her ideas in some way, but she doesn’t usually communicate that she’s done so with me. She also documents them HOWEVER she can. Sometimes, I’ll wake up with things written all over my arms (we’re ambidextrous), sometimes she’ll write notes on whatever paper is near her at the time (there’s multiple notebooks and sketchbooks all over the place). She’s recently gotten better about writing in the actual notes app on our phone, but that means I usually won’t find it for a lonnnnnng time. The most hilarious one, though, is when she can’t actually figure things out so just sends a txt to the most recent person we’ve talked to. Sleep Kittens doesn’t give a HOOT about spelling or fixing auto correct, though, so it’s always an adventure both trying to explain to the recipient what’s happened, and trying to decipher what she meant. =>.

I have Narcolepsy with Cataplexy and Migraines and a toddler!
I was aware from the beginning (~15 years ago), that there were different skill sets. As in, I didn’t have any. I had to train myself in Sleepwalk. Training for safety in altered states is a different way to live and has been incredibly challenging to explain but these Videos and Awesome Comments have really helped!
It didn’t occur to me how separate the memories are, I’ve lived this way a long time…but it makes sense in a very liberating way.
Thank you for sharing your stories. What a beautiful gift you two have given me today.

I have rules when I have a migraine as well. No showers when home alone, no driving if I've had weakness or am concerned about it, don't pick things up if I have to bend and am alone, etc. I also use an app called medisafe to track my abortives and daily meds and text my husband when I take my abortives. The rules develop as needed and as my husband helps me figure out what is needed. Fortunately, we just moved for his job and he (and other family) is a 5 minute walk away if needed. He has left to come check on me when I've not answered due to sleep before.
Even without a full migraine I don't drive by myself more than a couple minutes nowadays and I always tell my husband what I'm doing. I can't predict the sudden confusion I sometimes get.

These rules go along with a lot of stuff I do when I'm having brain fog. I have confirmed chronic complex migraines and am in the process of getting checked for me/cfs, pots, and fnd. I basically only wear shorts, dresses, or skirts for simplicity, I can't take a shower without the ability to sit safely or someone to check on me, I can't drive much anymore, and I can't really focus on anything. My doctors are finally listening a bit, so hopefully i can get the help I need soon.

It is interesting to see this perspective. I have suffered from chronic daily migraines for 10 years and my memory is hit or miss depending on where I am at in a migraine. So it is comforting to see you talk about it this way. Also we call my memory stuff rolling brown outs (sort of like your wiggles) because I am not blacking out but non migraine me has zero, literally zero remembrance of said thing but not calling it memory loss makes it sound less awful. Thanks for the video.

Thank you. I am experiencing neuromuscular symptoms that are leading to a possible rare diagnosis. I have no one at all who has experienced any of my symptoms, and some of them a really weird. Finding you, especially this episode, gives me the feeling that someone has an idea of what I’m going through. I have very “brainless times”, as I call them, when I have the trouble talking or putting things together into how to do it. I have a drug that I take every six months and for at least 4 of those months I struggle with smaller issues of the things you have just described. Thank you for offering how you deal with it. It really helps me. And I have a rule about carrying food, too! I have muscles that “jump” meaning both a muscle and the opposing muscle spasm at the same time. It is horrible to end up with hot tea over your entire front. I have a walker that I don’t always need, but on days that the muscle spasms are horrible, I usually need the walker or the wheelchair to walk, but even if I don’t, I use the walker so that I can put the drink in its drink holder and the food on the seat. That way my big spasms don’t throw my PB&j to the dogs and have to start over. Even the nystagmus disrupts any reading, so I have a LOT of audiobooks. Thanks for sharing your symptoms and your rules!

I loved when you asked your husband if you should put on “big pants” I tend to forget words even when I’m not having a migraine so I’ll be talking and just can’t think of what something is called so I’m just like “you know the thing..” and I try to explain it and people are like what are you talking about? but the explaining part usually jogs my memory and I remember the word. It is scary sometimes though with all the symptoms that follow me around every day. It wasn’t always this bad it used to be just feeling normal and then a migraine out of the blue but I learned to know when one is coming but now I have symptoms almost constantly including vision disturbances that scare me and dizziness and twitching that looks like Tourette’s tics but it’s not I have no idea what those are because they just recently started happening when I’m stressed or having anxiety. This is all confusing but you are making me feel so much less alone. ❤️

I've been putting my PRN meds in my pill case at the maximum quantity so that 1.) If I need them, I don't have to go upstairs and get them, and 2.) I'll know how much I took that day and roughly when based on which compartment I took it from.

Hi Jen. I just found your channel a couple days ago. What's really interesting is, if have all the same symptoms ( But my head feels like it is under electricity, and the pain is awful), problems and even the same Rules list ( exep. my husbands name is not Brian). But I was diagnosed with MS after looking for help for over 2 YEARS. I found out after years that my "symptoms" get really bad when I come in contact with chemicals. All kinds of chemicals. (NEW Laptops, TV's, Clothes, Electric Stuff, Paint, Furniture, even Air Filters from 1 Brand...the List goes on). My point is... maybe your "migraine Attacks" can be triggered also by this. I was also thinking to make a youtube channel about "My Stuff", but I don't know. But you have a new sub in me. See you..

I definitely do have migraine rules! I haven't met anyone else who has these too. I should write these down because I can only remember the big 2:
    1) No driving, ever.
    2) Text fiance to help me take my pills (my abortives are 3 separate pills and I forget to take all of them if I don't have help. Also WHY IS THE PACKAGING SO HARD TO OPEN?)

Random question I just subscribed to your channel about 2 weeks ago and I've basically binged watched all your videos does migraine Jen understand that she's pregnant and what being pregnant actually means love you and your channel oh I must not forget buddy

Aw, thanks! That's a really great question! Yes, she gets it, but she's late to the party. Migraine Jen is going through all the stages of feelings that I went through (excitement, nesting, fear of labor, etc), but about a month or two later than not-migraine Jen went through it.

    Hello Jen,
I am curious to know what Buddy does when you are in bed with a migraine. All of the dogs I have had over the years would lie beside me for the duration. Also, my head changes shape during a migraine ( I call it the shifting tectonic plates) and afterwards my head smells odd. Have you ever noticed that?

I don’t cook because I forget something is hot and don’t use gloves or I drop it and it’s boiling water etc I can’t even pour a kettle etc or fall bending into oven etc ,I have hemaplegic migraine and vestibular and all different types with nothing that controls them I’m actually waiting for my puppy now I’m hoping to train as my service dog I have one now so this may be muddled, I’d love to know how really to get started on this journey I’m 47 can not even leave house on my own due to sudden migraines and collapse as my main severe migraine causes totally left side paralysis and loss of speech and sight , a lot of what you describe is what I’m like my migraines are literally robbing me of my life and making feel so ill and useless.

You are drinking coffee in this video. Decaf? If not, it's something worth investigating more deeply. Caffeine is, I think, the *most frequent* cause of 'migraines.' What other causes there are, I don't know, but that one, at least, is known. (Caffeine is also connected to a whole boatload of heart and blood pressure symptoms.)
Caffeine dilates blood vessels in the brain in the short term, which is why medical science long ago began to incorporate caffeine in treatments, like ergot + caffeine drugs. The realization that caffeine is implicated as a cause of migraines came later, long after I quit caffeine and ended my own migraines (almost entirely) in 1980. That's based on solid science, but many, many practitioners have paid no attention. The myth that caffeine is harmless has become an article of faith among many people, not to be questioned, even among many doctors.
Memory is an interesting subject. When you're Not-Migraine Jen, you don't seem to have access to all of Migraine Jen's memories. Migraine Jen, when suffering from severe brain fog, also doesn't have access to all of Not-Migraine-Jen's memories. I'm visualizing a Venn diagram, where one of the circles is smaller and varies in size (brain-fogged to varying degrees), and one circle is much larger (not brain fogged, normal Jen). The two circles partially overlap. When the brain fog is at its worst, Migraine Jen's access to any memories at all is severely impeded - even the memories she herself created.
Does that visualization cast any illumination on your migraines? Not that I can see, other than to reinforce the idea that a heavy duty neurological disease is at work.
I enjoyed your explanation of Migraine Jen's coping rules, which she created herself (from trial and error and mistakes, it seems). She *does* learn, and she makes good use of notes she creates to help her navigate her world safely.
She'll need some new coping rules once the baby is born.
I think you answered a question I had: does Migraine Jen also suffer from fainting episodes? If I understood you, the answer is 'yes.'
Does that argue for the presence of two separate and distinct medical conditions? Maybe? But a firm conclusion demands more evidence, probably.
