- DMS loves his iPod. So much so that he willingly subjected himself to a condensed, time-crunched development hell in order to make something cool-The Most Powerful iPod-and have it ready in time for CanJam SoCal 2024. But did he end up getting it done in time? Watch to find out!

Congratulations, you have just created the End Game Nugget!
bro made the chicken tender 😭
Dankpods: “put Scarlet Fire in it”
And play Shrek!
I am surprised you did not use the 30-pin connector's Line-Out -- that way you could make the iPod slide in from the top.
Would have been a nice callback to those docking speakers, and really satisfying to do. And if you'd happen to stumble upon someone else there with another iPod, you could swap.
Complication and time constraints. Also seems it's not compatible with most things and I would have to program a control board to interface with it.

@TheHEADPHONEShow For revision 2 then, perhaps :)
@@TheHEADPHONEShow you might be able to mod a 30 pin camera adapter and be able to use the better DAC of the chord.
Apple! Bring back the MUSIC ONLY iPod !!!
Thank you for actually uploading a 21:9 video in 21:9
"21:9"? Why not just say 7:3?
21:9 is more like a term than a proper ratio when used to describe aspect ratio. It's technically 64:27
0:28 it’s impressive the impact Dankpods has had on UA-cam when most fans call an iPod a “nugget” and can identify the Mojo amp and DAC
"I am a Nugget"
Love that he chose the dankpods combo for this as well.
It’s from 2016, but the Oppo HA-2 SE will work with the iPods 30pin digital out. I also use my iPod docked with the arcam drdock which does 30pin digital to coax digital out. Would love to see more iPod hacks!
That's an awesome creation DMS, I miss iPod interaction it's so intuitive.
Looks like we are witnessing the birth of a design house for personal audiophile equipment. Keep doing awesome stuff!
This would had worked better with the 5.5 since it has the best dac
I would have used duct tape, but this is good too.
If this is something you're going to refine further, I've got a couple of ideas:
- Get the audio via the 30-pin connector rather than the 3.5mm headphone output. That way you'll be bypassing the iPod's headphone amplifier and getting and better quality audio signal going into the external headphone amp.
- Do what I've never been able to do, and try to track down a suitable external EQ. It's always bewildered me that they included a heap of mediocre EQ pre-sets, but not a single customisable 'user' slot. In fact you'd think there'd be a headphone amp somewhere with a decent EQ option, but I've never been able to find one of those either.
- (Plus there's the obvious common mods (if you haven't already done them) - a bigger battery and swap out the HD for an SD card.)
DAPs rule, dongles drool
reminds me of my hard line liquid cooling.. hells yeah, a PC + audiophile nerd in one, LET'S GO!
What I'd be more interested in is RPi zero W2 with volumio, it's power source and Mojo2 put together in one brick. I was using this setup from my bag with powerbank, but it's not very elegant.
Now that was a kickass video... Awesome stuff DMS!
That says COAX was lmao moment
Right when I saw that 3.5 to 3.5 interconnect, I thought to myself "since when does iPod have coax out?"
Yes I own a Mojo 2.
What I first thought was since when Mojo 2 has a 3.5 input!!
I can't believe mojo has a 3.5mm coax. That's the LAST connector I would ever want on a portable amp lol
@@DMS3TV plus it is really hard to find cables for it. DIY is the only reasonable option.
@@jirihorsky9600 3.5 coax is incredibly easy to find. All the creative sound blaster products use it.
@@DMS3TV probably because it's a dac first and foremost. Chord products are bought because of their FPGA chip dac and nothing to do with their amp section. In fact, Chord makes only 1 product that is a dedicated headphone amp and it's relatively new.
If you're using the analogue out from an iPod, the generation before (video?) sounds much better. I bought one of those classics and sent it back to get another used one of the previous gen (although smaller storage)
You could add a battery pack below the ipod so that you could charge things up
Depends on what you had first as a music player, if it was an ipod, then you love ipods. I had a cassette player, and I love it.
It’s interesting seeing how can integrate an iPod an a day in a single unit, I remember when fiio simply included an elastic band to attach their dac to your iPod
Now THIS is very close to a product I would be very interested in...
I love my ifi hip dac gold. Makes my Noires sound great on the go right from my galaxy.
My issue is that no matter how good a cable you get, dongles crackle or otherwise drop bit perfect connection from your phone with little to near no jostling/bumping around. To have a bracketed case, or phone grip that would legitimately affix to the hip dac seems like it would solve the issue. I spend so much time fixing, unplugging and replugging whatever dongle or hip dac I'm using that I end up...not using. Which is a shame, I think the hip dac sounds pretty alright.
...seems like it'd be hard tho. Would need to be something like a double sided car phone holder, with a usb-c to usb-c bracket that can somehow also adjust to accommodate different phones and dongles.
Using 2 specific (no size adjustment needed) seems challenging enough, as shown here. Love this kinda content. Also I want a 3d printer haha
i lost my ipod in landmine exp. in iraq. walked into the app store with it still in the zip-lock and the sand and dirt was covering the entire thing in the bag. they said they would be unable to repair it... i love the navigation on that
Very cool and unique project
Incredible
Although I prefer the old Fiio Players such as X1, X3, M3K (I have all of them 💀)
I am 100% asking to see this if I run into you again this year
You’re onto something here. Looking forward to the rig you build for New York
Super cool man, thanks for sharing.
Hey DMS, this is super cool! thanks for sharing this idea... although i really hope the mojo2-ipod classic combo could work somehow.. isn't there any means to connect these two?? also, a suggestion for your working protype - use thinner, yet sturdier material for the shell, i think there is a margin in the existing footprint that you can reduce...
Neat project! Have fun at the show!
Wow! DMS - you're a true Renaissance man!
Will definitely print this!
I already own a G5 and an iPod (albeit 5th gen).
Stick with the 5th gen. The classic sounds awful in comparison
Brilliant idea - and better than the usual rubber band wrapped around iPod & amp.
But doesn't the 30-pin connector of the old iPods have a line out?? I think there used to be a 30-pin to 3.5mm adapter = wasn't that line out, or just another headphone out??
What a dingus pro topping nugget, nice one mate
Nicely Done.
Think of the bright side.
I've been thinking of something similar but instead of using a portable dac, a usb dac's internals rewired into the ipod then 3d print a mew back case so you can use the new dac's inputs.
man u are genius !
The time-honored tradition of bricking a portable audio player
Wow, it’s really amazing that you can just create any custom case for your project. Have you tried to bypass the ipod’s DAC and use the Mojo or TOPPING DACs? I’ve been trying to find an adaptor to use an outboard DAC with my iPod Classic using the 30-pin connector, but can’t find one that will pass the digital signal to one of my DACs. Any suggestions?
No offense man, you made a portable audio stack. People were already doing this with mojo, oppo ha-2 and other DAPs
With that title, I though you were modifying the internals of the ipod.
So, the DAC and the electrical design the iPod is good?
Next time Mod the Pod! Taptic Engine, SDCard, new Case parts... maybe a new Screen?
Whatever I would Rebuild it from zero to Full Spec Modern Art.
Ohh, I got pretty close on my guess for your choice of 2nd amp (Topping NX7; was thinking you just required line-in for this purpose)
You should have use 30pin line out for cleaner sounds.
Unfortunately you can't connect any ol USB DAC over that. It's very particular.
-D
this is stupid xd. You've just made an enclousure for already enclosed devices. If you've made it a one device it would actually be good.
hahaha did something like this, connected my ipod's (nano 7th gen) output to line input of my iFi Gryphon.
sounds yummy!
You are having entirely too much fun with that 3D printer.
Sooo you spent how many weeks 3D printing essentially a glorified rubber band?
And the wastefulness of the multiple prototypes. I would understand if this were prototypes for mass production, but for a single user?
@@guaiqueritech Who cares? It's his own 3d printer
@@Jaymison if he is willing to share his work on UA-cam, he must be willing to accept opinions, whether for or against what he does.

Ipod Pro Max Ultra
"... that says 'coax.'" We've all been there, DMS.
This is incredible.
The only thing I hate more than RCA coax is 3.5mm coax. Screw impedance matching, right?
I men, this is essentially the same as the Lotoo Paw Gold 2017 DAP - It's essentially the a giga iPod haha (tho only with 3.5mm)
Ask the DIYPerks guy, I bet he can desolver all of these and combine them internally would give the iPod big battery too
Very nice build. A true audiophile Nugget. Can these ipods play lossless Files (ALAC)? Even when dac and head amp are key factors, the playback lacks something when the device is playing AAC-Files, right?
Since I have my Hiby R4 I really started wondering how a modern iPod with ESS/AKM DAC(s) and a good balanced output would sound. Then I see what they're doing on the iPhone and on the Mac and I'm really not holding my breath...
this should be uploaded on 1st April
I was hoping it could play cassettes 😅
If you do another version of this with a digital connection for Mojo or cma18p it would be interesting to see a custom-made otg cable
Would also need to program a board for it
@DMS3TV there are kits available for that, actually. Looked it up after posting their type-c conversion kits so you wouldn't need a custom cable
@@kyon_kyonstar it converts the connector but doesn't enable it to work with standard USB dacs.
@@DMS3TV Yeah read the fine print after sending it. Shame would have been a neat project
I would love for Apple to release a new iPod. Not a touch. Just an iPod. Same old scroll wheel interface, same old shuffle and guess that song features, but now it can connect to the internet and you can listen to your Apple music/Spotify/Tidal/etc playlists on it.
Just a pure music listening machine.
i was expectin someone to take apart 2 items and make a freakenstein. not look i ductaped together 2items with plastic
iPod Apocalypse Edition
Cool video! What about something like the Questyle M15? Wouldn't that, from a portability perspective, be more suitable? Just a question of power?
Yeah, but make one with the Mojo2 with the DDHiFi 4.4mm adaptor and the iPod. The G5 is just too big.
What are the two threaded brass pieces called that you pushed in and appear to be threaded on the inside.
Also the size.
Thanks in advance
an ultimate ipod would have a digital out
its very hard but its been done before
No 3D printers were harmed during this project.
DankPods: [heavy breathing]
If you still wanted to use the Mojo 2, couldn’t you get a 3.5 mm analog to 3.5 mm digital right angle adapter? Just curious
@@G00dH0uR83 You would need ADC in that adapter only to convert the signal right back to analog inside Mojo. I think it would be more elegant to use a 30pin to usb converter.
30 pin to USB would also need a control board. The iPod doesn't connect to most USB dacs.
Please make a review of a new beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO Open
Omg that was great 😂
Ah yes, the chord mojo, world renowned for being an amp and only an amp. Lmao
labor of love. Just get the Sony PHA-2A and life is good.
dankpods would be proud of such an nugget
eheh a spooky Wan Show appeared
why not topping nx7?
If you only wish to connect to AMP, there is absolutely no need to buy the G5 with DAC, the NX7 from TOPPING has better metrics and sound as an AMP than the G5.
Not available at their store
@@En_Joshi-GodrezOkay i see
very cool ..might be cooler if i understood any of it, but as a neanderthal to a lot of this, still very cool
Why not do a usb c mod? It'll have audio out.
i think you forgot the 2000's indie music.
Considering the amount of stuff you print you really ought to get yourself a bambulab
I have one! It just never works.
@@DMS3TV 🙃that’s not usually what I hear lol, what happened?
@@Superwazop I hear about 50/50. Some people have great luck and others have a paperweight. Bambu has no Z-offset so the nozzle ends up colliding with prints and gets gunked up.
@@DMS3TV well they do have nozzle based BL and a calibration routine, I’m sure you heard it a thousand times but did you wash your plate? Also PETG (I assume the red accent part) is known to print poorly at high speed. Anyways good luck on your future Omega
@@Superwazop I've tried everything in the book. It has no problems with bed adhesion but the calibration process never sets the Z-axis properly so I get bed crash and part collision.
Give it to dankpods to face off against the grit
Plz a Collaboration with dankpod for the part2
If I only had 3d printer...
I'll put my ipod and Samuels SR-71 Blackbird amp up against your rig. I hold mine together with a rubber band...Ha! Cool video.
Today I only use my iPod classic as an evidence only. An evidence that one's I was under the apple spell.
I regret selling my ipod classic now.
You should have dismantled both, the iPod and the external amp and integrate them in a 3D printed custom case.
Now make it CNCed
ultra? the video wideness is what's ultra T_T
Can't the ipod do digital out via usb?
Would also need to program a board for it
dont give dankpods any ideas

Q15 has a better DAC and probably sounds better.
Probably, but it doesn't have a 3.5 input
@@oceanix1929 no problem just transfer your files onto a device and use USB.
And I quit using the G5 cuz it's so big... Turns out it wasn't big ENOUGH
you could injure someone with that thing...
I can't believe a mistake like that actually happened...
I'm amazed the Mojo has a 3.5mm coax. It's the last connector that should be on a portable amp lol.
@@DMS3TV it's so crazy you'd almost expect that device to still use micro..... oh that's right. never mind.
