Hypothyroidism vs Hashimoto's: What's the Difference?

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 15 сер 2024
  • The main difference between hypothyroidism vs Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Even though they are BOTH thyroid diseases they are VERY different from one another.
Hashimoto's is both an autoimmune disease AND a thyroid problem. Hypothyroidism is just a thyroid problem.
Have you ever wondered about the difference between hypothyroidism and hashimoto's thyroiditis?
It's actually not that complicated but it's a very important thing to understand because EACH condition is treated differently. In addition, what causes hypothyroidism does not necessarily cause Hashimoto's and vice versa.
Hashimoto's will almost always result in hypothyroidism but not all cases of hypothyroidism are caused by Hashimoto's (the list is actually more diverse).
Learn how to identify the difference between these conditions, what the conditions mean for you, what causes them, and how they are treated.

@@drwestinchilds they really do! I'm newly diagnosed but still on Trial and error route. I was told by my Endo in UK that I have subclinical Hypothyroidism but he is confused with my results which show high TSH but T3T4 are fine. He doesn't think Vitamins and minerals have anything to do with Thyroid. I'm not keen on taking 25mcg of Thyroxine he has prescribed until he explains what I really have. He must know what my results are and not be confused. What do you think I should do? Can I reach you via email at all?
Because of another issue on my tongue I had an ultrasound done on my Thyroid which showed it was slightly inflammed after which I was referred to the Endo. I think my cause is through stress and maybe leaky gut. So what tests can I do for leaky gut?

Wow! Thank you for this video!!! So clearly explained.
I have bed treated for hypothyroidism starting in 1998 on levothyroxine, and for more than a decade and a half I was up and down feeling good and then being depressed and I could never lose any weight.
About 6 or 7 years ago I made changes to my diet, healthy changes, and I also began taking high doses of Lugols iodine drops and I iodoral iodine tablets. I worked on my spirituality, and I began doing yoga exercises and stretches. After some time had passed and I was feeling emotionally better than I ever had, physically better than I ever had, I felt confident to stop taking my 11 prescriptions drugs. I stopped them cold turkey and have not looked back, and continued the healthy aspects of my lifestyle. Because I am 58 years old, I have some issues because I've had my appendix removed when I was 14 and my gallbladder removed when I was 20. I also have mercury fillings. I want to get removed.
I feel better than I ever have in my life. My migraines are gone. I have a rare headache now instead of three or four migraines a week like I used to have my entire life since childhood. My acid reflux is gone. I no longer have any burning and I no longer take prevacid or any medication for it. I eat a healthy balance of fruits and vegetables and occasional salmon. I eat no junk food except on a rare occasion. I drink only water, and herbal teas, no coffee, no soda, no alcohol, etc.
I recently found a functional doctor who did a bunch of blood tests for me. The report came back and after analysis of all the data, my doctor informed me that I have Hashimoto's.
How can I tell how much of my thyroid I still have, if It hasn't been completely destroyed yet? And what can I do next?

Fifteen years on thyroid medication, just saw my thyroid antibodies results for the first time last week. Have had NO education from doctors/medical professionals. One did give me an additional med (whatever levoxythyrone doesn't have,) which did give me more energy initially, but disrupted sleep, and the day after not sleeping, I felt actively sick; decided I'd rather be tired but calm. That was all she had. I appreciated that she cared, but...😮

Thank you so so much... I just discovered your channel and it has been soo helpful.. I have Hashimoto's probably genetic from my father's side which was triggered by stress and depression 5-6 years ago.My main issue was chronic urticaria and joint pain (im only 26).It was only last year that a doctor suggested doing thyroid antibodies test after which I was placed on Thyroxin to protect the thyroid gland.... But I was not given a diet recommendation which is the MAIN source of the problem... You have no idea how much your videos have helped me understanding my own body. Thank You Sir 🙏

Thank you for the great info! I was told I have Hashimoto's and the the lab that did my bloodwork said they had the reference ranges wrong. My doc still insists I have it even though my TPO is within corrected reference range. So I am confused and just treat with supplements, diet and exercise as if I have autoimmune problems. Patients with thyroid problems seem to be unwanted.

I’ve been watching your videos because I had a partial Thyroidectomy 11 months ago.
They removed the left lobe because of multiple large nodules that were restricting my ability to swallow and exaggerating my gag reflex. The nodules were biopsied post surgery and found to be benign. My issues post surgery are, extreme fatigue, inability to cope with temperature changes, i.e. hot to cold and vise versus, and intense ringing in my ears. I take a daily supplement of Iodine, and Selenium to boost my remaining right lobe. Nothing has alleviated my symptoms. My Endocrinologist refuses to take any action because he says my thyroid hormones numbers are within normal ranges. Any thoughts would be so much appreciated. Thank you. #tiredofbeingtiredandcold

Thanks for the video. Question in regards to the mention of thyroid globulin and TPO antibodies: Do both of these types of antibodies need to be out of range in order for a Hashimoto's diagnoses?
If the TPO count is really high, but somehow the globulin is within range, could Hashimoto's still be likely/possible? Thanks again.

How do we determine the cause of the Hashimoto's? Which gene test should I take. I do have MTHFR mutation but not sure if it is related. I am not sure if I have the virus. I feel I do have a leaky gut and my stress levels are high.

Hey doc, could you expand on HPT? I'm a 40 year old male who's been sub clinical since my teens. I train, eat very well in a classical sense, my metabolism is a little too fast if anything, and I don't have Hashimoto's, but a "sluggish" thyroid my gp vaguely tells me. I've just got my bloods back and my TSH is coming in at 8.38. I'm trying really hard here regarding lifestyle but don't know where to aim anymore and it's driving me nuts.
Your vid is excellent and helps me deduce that HPT is worth investigating so expanding on this would be greatly appreciated. Also, perhaps this sounds familiar to you and there may be known food/chemical aggravants regarding inflammation?

I used pure natural body cleanser and herbs prepared by dr isibor which he sent to me! And I applied and took the herbs for 2 weeks. I can give his contact so you discuss with him directly his herbal supplement works well if taken properly and it's affordable💯.

Hello! I got blood work done a while ago (CBC) and my WBC was a little high for ‘apparently no reason’ (that’s what they told me) along with a couple other levels. Would Hashimoto’s possibly elevate my WBC?

What’s the earliest age when an individual could be positive for Hashimoto antibodies?

I was 8 when I was officially diagnosed. But suspision started when I was 5, that's when the low thyroid symptoms started showing up in me. From what I understand (what my parents explained to me), symptoms of low thyroid started first at age 5, then as I reached age 8 my antibodies started to sky rocket (I was on the boarder of going into a comma at one point and nobody understood why until they tested the antibodies). I was unusually gaining a little midsection weight, and my mom said I would look at her but I wouldn't register anything. I would phase in and out of being able to concentrate because I was that low on energy. She would have to shake me to get me back to being able to concentrate. I was also always lactose intolerant which was also a sign apparently.

I was a healthy energetic child who started to rapidly slow down and not have energy to do anything. I would catch every sickness going on at school too and it would last long before I felt better (healing time dragged on longer by at least two weeks then other kids my mom knew for example).

@Ika K I was born in 1967 and at age 5 I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism because of, "Failure To Thrive" ....
They did x-rays and it showed that I had the bone development of a 2 year old and since age 5, was taking Synthroid which was switched to Levothyroxine when I joined the Navy in 1986... Was on that medication and had never been referred to an Endocrinologist until I got very sick when I turned 50 since I only had TSH blood work drawn my whole life .
That was my very first Thyroid Antibody Test which was elevated and then had my first Thyroid Ultrasound which showed a non-functioning thyroid gland...
Did I always have Hashimotos? Who knows since test was never done..
Needless to say, I am now proactive with mine and especially children's Thyroid Health..

Chronic tonsillitis and strep... I missed so much school since I was always sick despite Thyroid Meds because as a child, I would pretend to take my medication and toss it in the trash... ugh

Hi! You mentioned trauma being a cause of hypothyroidism. Could radiation to the neck and chest (treatment for lymphoma) be considered trauma? Just recently had labs drawn and my TSH is elevated. Of course they did not check the antibodies though 😕

      Yes, radiation would count.

Hello doctor, I'm from India. Is there anyway I can get a consultation with you for hypothyroidism? Please let me know if there is an email address to which I can send my blood reports.

Pretty sure now after watching this video my hypothyroid problem was due to EBV. When I was in grade 9 I was tested for mono which was positive and was sick for a month and fatigue for 3 to 6 months afterwards 😔 then I was diagnosed when I was 23 with hypothyroid my TSH was at 14 and my gland was large. My question is the EBV still a problem that I can treat? Or am I doomed to be a thyroid patient all my life? Oh and I was one of the ones they did not test my antibodies until recently when I begged them. They were high as well 98 something I live in Canada. Thanks for all you do!

Thank you SO MUCH for this information!! I am dealing with subclinical hyperthyroid and now Hashimoto's. The doctor I see believes it is due to mycotoxin mold illness I've been dealing with for over 13 years and currently trying to detox from. So now I am wondering how much iodine should I have as I have been avoiding it completely, but now having hypo-type symptoms. How do I know?
