What made their achievement even more amazing is - during the tournament, they played all the traditional big guns in European football (except Italy) England, France, Holland, Germany, and the host Sweden. You can't get a tougher path than that to the title!

Great video! Brings back some dear memories - yes, I'm from Denmark. ;) And boy, did I get to see the matches! I was 16 at the time. My father got tickets for the final group stage game against France, for me, my brother and him. We thought it would be fun to see some live football, even though Denmark would most likely loose.
So we went, and what a game it was! We were standing right in the corner where Elstrup scored the winner. Magnificent!
On the way home from the game (it was a package deal, where we drove in a bus there and back), the company immediately put up tickets for sale for the semi-final, at a pretty high price (around 5.000 DKR - app. 670 Euros in 1992). I jumped on it, and got a football crazy friend to join as well.
So I was at the stadium again for the semifinal against Holland, and needless to say it was a fantastic game. We were standing right in the middle of a lot of Swedes, who were all cheering for Denmark. What a night!
As luck would have it, we were again able to buy tickets for the final, on the way home on the bus. Of course we did, even though I ended up blowing my entire savings on those two games. I wouldn't have missed it for the world!
And so, I was back at the stadium for the final - it was played in Gothenburg, which is quite a long drive from Copenhagen. I'll never forget that night. Pure euphoria. And what I'll remember even more, is when we arrived back in Copenhagen very early the next morning, it looked like there had been a civil war. Garbage, flags, bottles EVERYWHERE. People sleeping on the sidewalk etc.
One TINY regret I might have, is that I didn't get to experience Copenhagen that night, but I'm still plenty happy (and proud) to be one of the relatively few Danes who got to see the final in person. :D

Thank you for creating this. I got goosebumps when you showed the footage from the semifinal against the Netherlands. One of Denmark's key players, Henrik Larsen, received an awful knee injury in that game. But it was such a thriller. I remember when Marco Van Basten, a superstar, had his penalty saved. And the Dutch keeper tried to psych Kim Christofte by going up to him while he was placing the ball. And Christofte was like zero fucks given and casually scored the penalty. Emotions were insane. When you're a country that size, you never expect to win.

Seing the tactics of the squad again, Richard Møller Nielsen was more ahead of his time than many have given him credit for.
Richard Møller Nielsens tactics, Worlds best goalkeeper Peter Schemichel, the driblings of Brian Laudrup, low expectations, opponents totally underestimating Denmark... Add that with a little danish DYNAMITE and what do you get?

He could at the same day score 2 againt what ever team, and then drink you under the table at evening. And you got Jan Mølby as midfielder. Has someone see that lazy bastard run at all? But it doesn't matter because he could pass. And to add to the team you would have the danish brothers of Maradona and Pele, or their real name Laudrup
To see Michael Laudrup play soccer for a teen boy was a little bit homoerotic

98 was a bit overrated though. Only one good game against an african team! Even though Nigeria had a team of stars, african nations just never faire well at the world cup. Not until Morocco in 2022 anyways. Then we started well against Brazil, but it was obvious they would end up winning the game. Brazil just had an extra gear than the danes, sadly. But fair play to our danish boys for being almost legendary upon one good performance! :D
84 and 86 Denmark was amazing however. Far better than 1992 or 1998. Imagine how big a football nation tiny Denmark would be, if we hadn't waited until the 1970s to let our professionals from all over the continent participate on the national team.

The world cup match that you said was between Northern Ireland and Egypt was in fact between the Republic of Ireland and Egypt and the rule change had nothing to do with the Irish goalkeeper, Bonner. It was common practice until the rule change to pass back to the goalkeeper in order to create space further up the pitch and the rule change was supposed to make defenders pass the ball forward and to speed up the game.

He was set to get the Hall of Fame in Danish football in 2012, but a rule said he had to be there and he was in Finland to receive the Captains Ball on the same day. His Tommy son accepted the Hall of fame on behalf of his father who passed a week after it was announced he would be in the Hall of Fame 2014. Sadly Tommy passed in 2023 (61yo). I have meet Richard a few times, when he visited his old club (Trainer) Svendborg FC, he would always have time to greet people and he remembered you. He really loved the game and enjoyed coming to the matches, he is a proud Funen Beech (Fynsk bøgetræ), remembered with the RMN square in Odense and a tribune named after him, honorary member of Svendborg F.C. A legend around these parts.

Too bad Michael Laudrup didn't rejoin the team--assuming that somehow that his inclusion would not have altered the team's result adversely.

Great video - you are right the half Brøndby Team and Schmeichels ever best match was the key to the championship. By the way Denmark in fact played better than Yugoslavia in the defeat in the groupstage. The last matches Denmark played a lot of passes to the goalkeeper who could pick the ball with the hands - so thats why the present rule not to pick up the ball from your own team-mates was introduced!

Denmark did not allowed professionals to play for the national team before 1972 and did
really first get fully fletched professionals in 1979 when the german Sepp Piontek became
manager and proffessional football was introduced in the danish leauge. First appearence
in a major championship finals was EURO 1984 in France. Qualified for 8 EUROS and 6
World Cups since 1979, 8 times advanced to the knockout phase and winner of EURO 1992,
which then was followed up by winning FIFA Confederations Cup in 1995.
Most prominent players : Michael Laudrup, Peter Schmeichel, Brian Laudrup, Allan
Simonsen, Preben Elkjær Larsen, Morten Olsen, Henning Jensen and Christian Eriksen.
All time topscorer : Jon Dahl Tomasson, 52 goals in 112 games.
Btw - This is quite simple the best video about this triumph.
