- In their Euro 1992 qualifying campaign, Denmark finished second in their group, one place behind Yugoslavia who qualified for the finals in Sweden ahead of them.
However, the ongoing conflict in the Balkans saw Yugoslavia banned from the tournament, with the minnows of Denmark taking their place. Denmark were priced at 20/1 to win the tournament, but they achieved the unthinkable.
In this short documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at the Denmark team of the early 1990s, their lack of preparation, and how they managed to win the European Championships in 1992.

I watched this tournament from Yugoslavia as a 12 year old kid. What was, in a way, surprising, a lot of people here were supporting Denmark, although one might think they would be hated for replacing Yugoslavia that year. Instead I think they were seen as our team in that Euro, and, of course, when they won lots of people were commenting that we are the unofficial champions.
Also, I just realized watching the video that my memory fooled me. I remember Andersen's injury but I was convinced that it had happened in the finals against Germany.
@@FS-vz9hw In 1992 there were no Danish soldiers here or any other peacekeepers. What I referred to as Yugoslavia (perhaps erroneously) was the modern day Serbia where I lived and still live. Breakup of Yugoslavia already started to happen at that time, but the wars were happening in Croatia and I believe in Bosnia and Herzegovina (I would have to compare the dates but fighting in Bosnia started in earnest in 1992, and it was finished in Slovenia by that time). Although I don't know when the UN forces were starting to be deployed, since there was no fighting going on here, there were no UN troops. Maybe it was different in some other parts of the country, but here most people I know supported the Danish team. Maybe in part because they were seen as ''our'' team, but also in part because they were total outsiders for many.

Denmark have been punching above their weight for a while now. Even now they’ve got quite a decent team.
we quite honestly are in a lot of fields, both sport wise, and elsewhere. kinda always have been. 5.8m and still a high export of professionals in a lot of fields.
One of the best times of my life. I was 7 years old in 92, and I remember that my entire street, and the entire neighborhood (roughly around 1000 people) were out all night, celebrating, hugging and of course drinking a lot of beer. Even the morning after, people were still having the time of their life - still drinking beer. I remember a lot of beer :P
It was women, men and children of all ages just embracing each other in one looooong big happy celebration.
Michael Laudrup was arguably the best player in Europe at the time, but as a personality outside the pitch (at least on the national team) he never was worth a lot tbh. He was VERY egocentric and the way he treated Richard Møller Nielsen (the manager at the time) was despicable. All in all - I don't think we would have won with Michael there. Again - one of the best players EVER. Personality - not so much. That's why his younger brother, Brian Laudrup, was and is so much more loved by the common Danish fan.
I would urge everyone to watch the movie "The summer of 92" from 2015. It depicts everything that happened very well.
Also the almost unforgiveable way the DBU (Official Danish football union) and the media treated Richard Møller Nielsen, before, under and even after his managerial duties for Denmark. Publicly in Danish media saying that Richard was not even better than their grandmother as a coach.
The president of the DBU, who resigned after the hiring of Richard, got a new job as the president of the "Spillerforeningen" (Players Union), and he actively tried to sabotage the "10 day training camp". He refused to reschedule home matches, so that instead of 20 players, Richard only had 7 players in 4 of the 10 days of training camp Denmark had prior to the first group match against England. A lot of cheesy shit like that.
Another good example, from after the European Cup. Richard was not selected, or even nominated, as the best Danish manager in 1992?? WTF (probably because "SOMEONE" forgot to nominate him). However, guess who was selected the best manager in the world in 92? Exactly, Richard. The "split" that was loosely referred to in this video, was VERY ugly, and continued even long after he won the 92 European Cup.

I'm from a small island in the Caribbean (Tobago, birthplace of Dwight Yorke) and I'd only become a football fan in time for Italia 90. The Euros were not on my radar in 1992 but I always remember that the first time I'd ever heard of the tournament was when a guy who lived down the street came to our house to watch the final game because something had happened to his TV set.
I remember how excited he was about the Danish team and their fairy tale run in the tournament. I was actually getting ready to leave home to go to the airport but I have vivid memories of him excitedly commenting while the game was going on (I watched the game in spurts since I was otherwise occupied with my trip).
He almost lost his mind when the final whistle blew and Denmark had won. The full extent of the success story still hadn't hit me until many years later when I found out about the back story of the 1992 Denmark run in the tournament. And I FINALLY understood why my neighbour was so excited about the team all those years prior!!
So Denmark and the 1992 Euros were my introduction to the tournament. I've followed every tournament since then.....and I've become a Dutch fan over the years.
But hats off to Denmark albeit belatedly. I do love a good underdog story!!! 🙂🙂

Imagine my surprise ! I worked at his house for a week or so. Every lunch break we´d sit on his terrasse and he´d tell us stories about the team, about the matches, the players etc.
Richard was considered `weird` by many bcs of his rather strange way of speaking and sometimes seemed arrogant, but the Richard Møller Nielsen I spoke to, was the kindest and quite funny gentleman you´d ever meet !

@@gunnerjames3700 Tbf, Arsenal used to by-pass their whole midfield in those days. That's why the likes of Jensen and Hillier managed to play for such a good team. Back then, an Arsenal CM's job was mainly watching the ball fly over your head.
R.I.P Line.. I was 6 years old like her. I dont remember that much of the games, because i was sick with Meningitis at the same time. 92 was sooo great and also cruel for me.
I survived though, but i was only some few hours away from death.

Being Danish it was a fairytale. A small addition, the players were allowed to have their wife's around during the tournament, the coach was very much " hated" by press and Laudrup brothers etc .Living in Holland in 1992 and watching the game in Amsterdam was surreal. All the Dutch were joking about Denmark but after Denmark won I was teased being Danish. When we won the cup I drove alone through Amsterdam playing with the horn. Here I got so many free beers, not because that Denmark won, but that Denmark beat Germany!! I will never forget it. I only saw once the Laudrup brothers play together and that was for Ajax for a short period. Now that was a treat. They were arrogant but fanstadtic players. Thanks for the video
I feel for the Yugoslavia football players that were not allowed to take part in 1992 euro. It wasn’t their fault and they had a very talented group of players.
Also the Laudrup brother were probably ons of the most gifted footballing siblings in the professional game. Many great brothers but in terms of combined skill, ability, teams played for, titles won etc. It’s pretty good

Watching videos like this that even touch on what happened in Yugoslavia in the 90s when people online keep saying least year was the worst year in history because they had to stay home have no clue what a bad year actually is.
In this and other worlds,I am the 280th liker of this video and I am extremely so happy that one of my favourite national teams one of the smallest European teams Denmark to fight against all odds to win the 1992 European Championship without qualifying due to the generosity of Yugoslavia and beating my favourite team France was a key moment for them to be winning the tournament a year before I was born,good friends!!!:-D

Im Danish, and i spoke with my mother about it, she lover in Odense at the time (the biggest city on Fyn the middle Island) she told me it was one Big party, in Odense she could feel the cheer when the final whistle was blown. Nearly everyone went into the City, and it was one Big party, with overflooded Streets, the party continued until the Sun shone again, would die to be. She even told me, it was something from at fairytale.

I group of us had gathered to watch it in the Danish church in London. Afterwards we were so excited we all got in our cars and drove around central London, honking our horns and waving Danish flags out of our windows.
We only stopped when passing the German embassy to try and get them to come to the window, which was a bit naughty.
Afterwards we emptied the priest's wine cellar of champagne.
As a ManU fan this tournament made me believe that Schmeichel was a literal GOD!
I have to take issue with the idea that the 92 side looked like they could become Denmark's strongest team in decades. This was only 6 years after the 1986 World Cup, with a Denmark squad that was one of the most exciting teams in world football. Olsen, Elkjær, Lerby, Arnesen, Simonsen, M Laudrup. At the time the 92 Denmark team was seen as the sad fading away of that golden generation.

I remember when we won as well, I was in a big park in Copenhagen where many thousands watched on big screens. I had a lot of beer than day and evening and when we scored both goals, I was out in the bushes peeing. After that, we walked to the center of Copenhagen; on the way people, that didn't know each other, hugging and laughing, police cars driving around with the Danish flag on their antenna. It was special. At the center square of Copenhagen around 40.000 people were gathered. The most since the ending of WW2. The morning after, my shoes were torn to shreds because of all the broken beer bottles that were laying around. I'll never forget that special June evening.

In Denmark we went absolutely ballistic as a nation after the euros in 92. I was 2 years old at the time, which meant that my parents hired a babysitter for the game. Afterwards they ended up paying her through the night, so that they could leave their vacation spot and travel 50 km to party in Copenhagen along with everyone else. For reference Copenhagen had a population of 450k in 92' and there were 250 thousand people celebrating in the streets celebrating the win!

Dutch television did a documentary on this 92 Danish team, including an interview with Schmeichel and others. Funniest part was: For John Faxe Jensen to score...it was something that came out of nothing, and that to me is how we won that tournament. Interviewer: he tried to score before. Schmeichel: oh he tried his whole career.

I am Danish and will claim that Denmark has never had so many from other nations on their side as in the final against Germany. The Germans had already before the start of the match arranged a party and celebration of their returned German "heroes". Thank you to all of you in the world who cheered with us Danes that day.
You are correct. I watched the final in my local pub in Scotland and the whole place was going crazy after the Danes scored their second goal.

I picked Italy to win this tournament, but given the situation with Christian, I would love to see the Danes pull off another shock tournament win.
It might have helped them, joining the tournament like that. There was absolutely no pressure on them and they had nothing to lose.
Fun fact: As a Brøndby fan, I am now proud to say, that Brøndby just won the Danish Super Liga, for the first time in 16 years! It's incredible!

"Final Yugoslavia First League Teams: Where are they now?" would be interesting with Red Star winning the 90s CL but then falling from grace as a lot of teams in the region.
+ maybe how a lot of them changed names or logos as socialism felt off (loosing a red star etc.)
And in spite of all this, Richard Møller Nielsen was not given the honor of manager of the year in Denmark in 1992. He did however win both the World Soccer Manager of the year and European coach of the year award. In 1992 it was simply not given out in Denmark, only the second time since the award was started in 1968 that ever happend. He did win it as a club manager in 1975 at Odense Boldklub though.
John Jensen was asked the following day to describe his thunderbolt of a goal, and with a big smile he said: "I hit the ball right in the ass!"
One thing that wasn´t mentioned, that I think played into the Danish players was the "us against the world" idea that also sprung from us (as the only country) voting no to joining the EU (which we did a year later) just a few days before the semi final. As our foreign minister then put it "If you can´t join them, beat them"! As a kid at the time, who turned 14 during the tournament, I mainly remember the wild celebrations that followed and of course, Henrik Andersen´s terrible injury, that I´d still rank as one of the worst I´ve seen in sports. On a different note, I have actually worked for Kim Vilfort, who today owns a gardening business. It was only for a few days, but he was a very pleasant guy to work for.

I feel really sad for him, he won something his country dreamed of but losed someone he loves so much :(
She died 6 weeks after the final. He has only rarely talked about it in public. He feels it's a private matter and didn't necessarily trust journalists to not put a spin on the story.

Brian Laudrup was amazing. The Scottish league is obv not the strongest but he used to beat players 2 or 3 times before crossing the ball. Him and Gazza in a team was unreal, we as a club will never get 2 players as good in our team again.
Brian Laudrup is a hero. That's probably the difference between him and his brother Michael: When called upon for his country, Brian answered! He knew Denmark needed him, and he was then named "Player of the Tournament". Wish he has gotten more of a chance to shine for AC Milan after they bought him. Such a gifted talent

John Jensen said in a recent interview after being asked if they were lucky:
“There was no luck. We won because we were the best team. We beat the favorites, we beat the reigning European champions, we beat the world champions. We were better than the others and we won because of it.”

Dinamo is one of the biggest clubs in Eastern Europe,it has 18 league titles and 13 domestic cup titles...It reached the Champions League Semi Final in 1984 after beating the holders of the trophy Hamburg...In the Semi Final they played against the great Liverpool side of the 80's...After the 89 revolution the club lost one of their greatest generation after their players where bought off by western clubs,similar to what happened to the clubs in East Germany that you already talked about...Corruption and neglect brought this giant of romanian football to it s knees...At the moment Dinamo is preety much the ONLY true historical side in Romania's top division...This team stood afloat thanks only to it's fans...In the summer some new spanish chiarman came and bought the club,brought players on huge contracts and left without paying them...The players just broke the contracts and the club accumulated even more debt...If the fans did not step in and accumulated 2 milion euros the club would have been dissolved...For anyone watching outside of Eastern Europe it might be hard to understand it s value...If u re English imagine Liverpool being dissolved...This club is OUR Liverpool,and it's stadium OUR cathedral...With all the fears of relegation,players leaving and managers coming in and leaving the club still managed to fight it's way to a Romanian cup Semi Final...Please,make one video about our story too...

Though it beats me why a big team like Man Utd have never tried to sign Kasper, he is just as good as his dad was imo.
Given how important Kasper was in Leicester winning the league a few years back and more recently for them downing Chelsea in the FA Cup final just last week too.
Peter is still better than Kasper in technical and mentality aspect as Goalkeeper. So, you can imagine how good Peter was.
The reason why United never signed Kasper was, first of all, Kasper was Man City academy graduate. Second, United had already found a better goalkeeper than Kasper in both VDS and De Gea. Third, Kasper only viewed as world class, maybe only became world class after Leicester title win, where back then De Gea is arguably one of the best GK in the world along with Neuer.
Would United then sign a 34 y/o Kasper as De Gea replacement next season just like when they signed VDS? No, they projected Dean Henderson as their future No. 1. TL;DR Kasper to United was never meant to be

I have also wondered that: WHY have noone signed Kasper but i came to the conclusion that Kasper is near the end of his career so his market value is low. Which obviously would make a bigger club want him even as a sub - BUT Leicester would never engage in a deal about Kasper if they didn't receive a huge amount. They wouldnt be able to find any younger gk to replace Kasper at his market value.

It's a miracle how they've managed to win that. Just like Portugal's 2016 title...where they won only a single game inside the normal 90 minutes and drew all the others. (Extra-time madness) But that's a topic for another video, hehe.

The coach Richard Møller Nielsen, was initially rejected as the coach since they wanted a foreigner like the man before him, but all the ones they wanted said no and settled for him, and despite that he was constantly hounded by critics, commentators and experts, one of them said that his grandmother could with the same players achive the same results like Richard when he was head of the youth team.
When Richard heard this he dismissed it and said 'I can't comment on that I don't know her qualifications'

Crazy part of this story is that Yugoslavia team was already in Stockholm when they heard news about UEFA banning them from tournament. They got on a plain of Yugoslavia JAT Airways but pilot didn't have premision to start flight but he went to the air never the less. They flew accros Europe with no permision to flight, NATO could literaly shot them down.

John "Faxe" Jensen quite famously said in an interview after the final "Den ramte jeg sgu lige i røven" translating to "I hit that right in the ass", refering to his goal in the final. Still to this day nobody really knows what he meant by that.
After Vilfort returned to the danish camp following the victory over France he allegedly told the rest of the team: "You guys better play well, I've promised her (his daughter) that we're going to win the tournament.
Another fun fact: Richard Møller Nielsen didn't win danish coach of the year in 1992, however he did win both European coach of the year and World's maneger if the year.

Born in 1989, I only faintly remember my uncle being all over the place, drunk and jumping about during the final. I have since been told that almost every danish employer suffered from a lack of staff the day after when half the nation called in sick.

As an England supporter "What a Letdown" ... so when Denmark got to the Final, I said to myself "I'm not watching The German's win this again" so I missed one of The Great Upsets ... my only conselation was an evening of "Catching Up" with an ex girlfriend !!! p.s. a great documented video!.

Heads up for a new suggestion video. On light of their relegation today, would love to see what happened to werder Bremen. As a teenager growing up, I saw them won the bundesliga and constantly in the champions League. Now they like many big clubs before them (schalke Hamburg Kaiserslautern and themselves) are in the bundesliga 2 or regional league for that matter.

The greatest underdog story
As someone from one of the states of former Yugoslavia, I really wish there was no war and it had stayed a unified country. Mostly because of all the pointlessly lost lives, but also for sports reasons. I'm sure a Yugoslav team could even win the World Cup, I mean just Croatia on its own came very close.
If we were still unified, we would have mopped the floor with France three years ago.

We didnt play without our best player: Mich. Laudrup (if he is the one youre thinking of) had redrawn himself from the team, as he didnt respect the coach - he later rejoined the team, when Rich. M. Nielsen ended his term. But Brian Laudrup was still on the team, and in my (little) opinion: he is the best national player of Denmark EVER: we never lost a game, in which he scored, but the last one against Brazil 98. BRIAN LAUDRUP was amazing, giving much more intensity to the games than Michael, who had a much greater club career and fame, as you all know.

I have had a soft spot for Denmark after going their at Easter 1986 (just after Chernobyl) as they had just qualified for the World Cup you literally had to go into shops to see what they sold as the windows were full of Football shirts and scarves etc. In deed I actually bought a Denmark shirt, scarf and hat. Danish Dynamite!
