This is not the dark side of nature, it's the real side. We humans are the ones who have a habit of seeing nature as kind and pretty, but it's not. Our ancestors knew this, we have forgotten.

Prion diseases are up there for me. It's one thing for a fungus to make something take root, die, then bloom. But a prion, not an organism but a replicating mistake in the brain, can make an animal malfunction in any number of terrible ways like cannibalism and autocannibalism. There's no logic or reason to it, which makes it all the more upsetting. It's just a very unfortunate mistake.

Incredible! Nature always surprises us! Our crew got on camera baboons that had an agreement with lions and would trick gazelles, and as an exchange price, they could live with lions near a waterhole. It is fascinating to see it, but also interesting to see this dark side of baboons.

Wrong. They are not showing the most appalling things they've seen. I've been watching an enormous amount of nature films. There is but so much they want you to see for fear of many things, I believe. First it's horrifying. He'll, even watch the episode called The Problems of Parenting from the life of Birds in 1997 was horrid. As an avid nature film fanatic, I do not want to see constant killing for any reason but certainly not frivolous reasons we don't fully understand. So they could lose many viewers. Especially children who need to learn about the natural world...they show enough. Live seal pups tossed around by Orcas and Sea Lions and never eaten. Killing the smallest chick's so the others will thrive. Whales dragging around dead new burns for days. Baby elephants dying of thirst. On and on. If you want to see the dark side of nature, there is more than enough out there. Every program shows something hard to watch. If that's ALL you want to see, you need to figure out why.

Imagine being born a wild animal. From the moment of birth it's a battle for your very survival. Every moment of every day and night is uncertainty. Having to kill to eat and having to fight to keep from being killed. Starvation make absolutely nothing off limits. Babies, women, elderly, sick, all on the menu. Even your own children. It must really suck being a wild animal.

well ,imagine you are a human and have to do excactly that.... oh wait ...that is what we do.
the only difference is ,that because we are such a huge group working togehther, you dont notice it everyday. but we are killing and dieing all the time , even more than the other animals. sometimes i envy most animals , because the most live a long life and there is mostly a good balance between prey and hunters.... for the young and old it is most dangerous. the agile and fit ones dont have to worry too much. and they dont have to work from 9-5 and are forced to cope with the mental illnesses of other humans . and bad short time memory helps a lot ,too. ;)

@CharmagnCody-mw6zr Maybe because it's a lot easier to kill a pup than a full grown seal, and less calories are used in the hunt and also consumed by the competition with this method. I agree that it would make sense to actually eat the seal but overall the strategy could still make sense, if one dead pup = lots more fish for orcas, or their preferred prey species. I assume fish also consume some of the dead pups that don't end up back on the shore but that's just speculation. The dead pups may also be used as 'bait' to tempt preferred prey species into the area - I believe that tactic has been reported before in orca pods.

I don't think anthropomorphizing an animal specifically another mammal like us Is actually wrong. it shows how intelligent sentient they are how aware they are they're surrounded how they can use tools in some cases and by making them more human it shows them that they are in a par with us for intelligence and emotional content. it shows us that they are valuable creatures beings in and of their own right that deserve to have the same rights that we do to live and prosper in a world in this world. what is so wrong about that? Nothing! He opens up these life forms to us So that we can see them for what they really are. we're looking for the Cosmos for intelligent life when it's already here with us and we're ignoring it we're not even trying to see if we can communicate with them or how they communicate and what the communications mean to them.

The fact that he keeps emphasizing "cruelness" i feel like isn't the correct word for such an interesting scenario amongst those Orcas. Like he said in the beginning us looking at that as Homo Sapiens, people think that its cruel, harsh, or even twisted to look at just because thats soley human being's civilized ways. Im sure they weren't the only "animals" to observe that. Birds, Crabs, maybe even Jackals were probably there witnessing that moment and i doubt at all in their minds they thought of it as cruel, its simply a survival moment. In the Orcas case, going off his information it was indeed a teaching moment for their children no matter if the Sea Lion died or survived. All in all tho that is a cool ass moment to be caught on film, and i do not think it was cruel of them to trap the Sea Lion and give their offspring a teaching moment.

Interesting . . . the one where the bald cameraman told of the baboon snatching and eating the newborn baby gazelle. His words were delivered with grave and sorrowful lamentation at such barbarity in nature, almost as if he were terribly sad that the brutality he described is a reality, one that he very much wished would never happen.
    I wonder . . .
    Is that same cameraman pro-choice?

The presenters, being photographers, endlessly immerse themselves in nature. Despite their profession, they still see much more than they capture on film. They witness stories that they couldn't capture. Those are the ones they tell in this specific film. Surely, you'll find the stories they did manage to capture in many other films.

I hate to be mean but the guy crying at 10:00 (cuz the hyena mother ate the cub) felt overly dramatic. The cub is dead, dead carcass will attract other predators and she gets to restore lost nutrients by eating the carcass herself. Many animals eat their young for different reasons and its just nature so I had a hard time empathizing with the gentlemen here.

Humanity is absolutely guilty of personification, and assigning human traits, values and reasoning to animals and their behavior. but we must certainly remember that wild animals live under a very high degree of stress and pressure. Our pets and livestock have a much easier life in the hands of humans, even the Livestock that are raised in great comfort when compared to a wild animal's life. most wild animals sleep very little and are always on guard for predators not only are they ALWAYS looking for danger, they must follow the herd because leaving the herd is a sure way to die. finding food and water can is often is very hard to do, depending on the environment. but because of this unless you are a predator, your live is very short, because even a mild sickness leaves you weak and saps your strength and you are picked out by a predator that knows what to look for that tells them you are weakened. And they are very good at seeing weakened animals. When predators "behave badly" they are simply showing personality traits they have. each animal has their own personality, any pet owner can tell you that. sometimes they can be cranky, or happy, impatient or even joyful. I think that teaching moments are always important to animals but I feel, personally that animals enjoy in following their instincts, and a predator will always enjoy the thrill of the hunt, and as humans, we can most certainly relate to this. but the original ideas that vegetarian animals never eat meat, predators ALWAYS eat meat, and wild animals never surplus kill or kill for pleasure. all of these notions are false, vegetarian animals most definitely WILL eat meat if it has the chance to, and yes, even animals engage in surplus killings, and it's not just a few species that do this, ALL of the big cats will do this, in fact I think that Most predatory animals will engage in surplus killing. any cat owner can also confirm that their cats will catch a mouse, and really "play with that rodent until it is on the verge of death where playing with it is no longer fun, and sometimes play well after the mouse has died, and sometimes eat it, and sometimes not. but our preconceive4d ideas of these creatures have been wrong that they have personalities and they experience emotions much like we do, to think otherwise is true fallacy. Also animals need to use every resource they can get ahold of, and watching a Mother who had raised their young, turn around and consume it after it had died is a simple survival tactic. Food is Always a precious resource that cannot be a resource left untouched. remember that the Mother used significant resources to raise their young, why let it go to waste, instead of recycling it and putting yourself up a bit on the race? The one thing that scientists have a hard time with is emotions in the species they are studying. ever afraid of personification
