Beautiful man inside and out and an unmistakable voice. He was so humble and that makes him so amazing. He was so fine when he was young.
even with that said he was extremely talented,Ruffin had multiple chances even in 1982 on the reunion tour to solidify his place in the group, but again he kept missing shows,Ruffin blew it,he could have been recording with The Tempts throughout the 80's and beyond.may he rest in peace,one of the greatest singers ever,not just soul singers but one of the greatest singers PERIOD.

I cant use the word "replace" because he only added to an already established legacy-group. He brought them a new rough sound that held its own in HIS style. Thats what i like about it.

No Temptations fan wanted David Ruffin to leave.....but weren't we lucky that Dennis Edwards was there to bring the group into the next era of the Temps.......and aren't we lucky that Dennis is alive and well and sounding great to carry on the legacy. Yes, Otis and his guys are doing their thing. But Dennis Edwards is the man who really carries the torch and keeps the flame going. Props to Dennis.

One of my favorite Temptations songs is -- Paradise from The Wings of Love album.
Dennis sings lead and it makes you wish he had sung more love ballads before he was replaced.

He got fired,he didnt leave The Tempts. Differences like missing shows and showing up late. All Ruffin had to do was not miss shows,not show up late,not miss rehearsals,basically do his job. Why would they change the name to David Ruffin & The Temptations and he is missing shows,imagine if they did change the name and David missing shows,do you know how bad that would be,because the audience would be saying "where's David". Even when Ruffin went solo he was missing shows,he did it to himself
Poor soul... I think that David Ruffin's drug problem was his greatest downfall.... I still love him as a singer.... He was legendary and is unforgettable

to each their own,the thing is Dennis never sang those songs by himself,the Tempts shared leads,whereas David sang My Girl as the only lead singer,but David would just sing it like he sang I Wish It Would Rain. Listening to Dennis sing his parts on Cloud Nine is like listening to Dennis sing I Wish It Would Rain. Those songs are related because of the gritty leads. Listening to Ali and G.C. Cameron sing on Cloud Nine is like listening to David sing Cloud Nine,imo,peace
Chris Warren wow I never heard Dennis Edwards recording of I Wish It Would Rain, but I hear I heard Ali Woodson recording of I Wish It Would Rain. It is just as good if not better then David Ruffin also.
@Chris Warren seriously??? They are both great singers in my view... However, I fully disagree with you.... Dennis Edwards' version of 'I Wish it Would Rain' isn't 10% as good as David Ruffin's.... David Ruffin melted out that song with conviction, pain in his voice and deep soul that could make anyone cry

Dennis is great, but I agree with Tuzwol, if David sung those parts on Cloud Nine and I Cant Get Next To You and Ball of Confusion those songs are just as successful.

Interesting. I know only one other group where changing the lead singer changed the fundamental sound of the group, and that were the Doobie Brothers when Tom Johnston was replaced by Michael McDonald.
