I have no idea why I said Grahame Taylor. SORRY Mr BUTLER!!!!!! My pleasure mate and hope things are going well in France. Take care Grahame. Cheers, Huw
Thanks Phil. I'm looking forward to it as well. I nearside give up to be honest but I came to my senses and thought I'm going to get something out of it. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Nicely done Huw. Welcome back! Don’t be so sure a catch caused the crack. Wet cherry, especially the European varieties, seem to crack at will and may well have caused the catch. If you try another any time soon, turn the tenon, reverse, turn the whole blank round, drill, then turn the shape on the outside. You can also pull the drill bit out even more often to help keep it cool. Someone said, “If the bit is too hot to touch when you bring it out of the wood, you’re drilling too fast!” I thing there’s some merit to that statement. Good to have you back. Hope your craft show goes well.
Thanks Doug my friend, it's great to be back. It was my intention to drill first, as mentioned in the video, but for some reason I didn't do as I had planned. The drill was hot at all and I was drilling at 328 I think it was which is quite slow. I've heard that statement as well. Thanks for your good wishes and I'm really looking forward to the event. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
No need to apologize I enjoyed watching with an afternoon cup of coffee. I think it’s all going to turn out great. Hope to see you next week. Have great weekend my friend!!! Take care Huw.
Thanks Randy, I appreciate that. I do like the end result but just not what was planned. Even without the issues I think it would have to short anyway for what I wanted. Take care my friend and thanks again. Cheers, Huw
Wee bit of creative crafting my friend. Take time to get back into it Huw. I am sure you will enjoy the journey Take care both of you and enjoy creating Cheers Harold
Good to see you back at the lathe, Huw! I fully understand the problems with being rusty from lack of time at the lathe. My folks bought a Chippendale-style secretary desk a while back which was missing the finial. I offered to make a replacement. It had been several years since I'd turned anything but after two or three catches, I got it done. Almost like being a new turner. Take care, mate and hope to see you soon! Cheers! Dana
Thanks Dana, That's how I felt initially. Glad you managed to get the finial done. I'm going to try and get some lathe time everyday from now on, circumstances allowing. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Huw you ended up with a pretty vase. The color and the grain will speak loudly and will be noticed be who ever sees it. Considering not turning for 8 months and your mind on very important things you handled it nicely. Hwyl, Gary
Hi Gary, The grain is lovely and I'm looking forward to making more of these fro the other pieces I have. 8 months is a long time and it showed LOL. Take care my friend. Hwyl, Huw
Thanks Ruben, Not what I intended but still nice. Thank you for your kind wishes for the market, I'm really looking forward to the 13 days. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Bet it feels good to dust of the cobwebs and get covered in man glitter again mate. Best of luck fun and adventure at the craft fair and Hi to Jane for me mate Kind regards Conor
@@WoodenItBeNice i can agree about that. Manage to find a place where i am busy setting myself up. I want to try over the weekend to make a video, but lets see what happens
Hi Huw, Interesting video. Quick question do you know why the drill jammed? also if possible can you show the things you think are boring like a bit of the sanding because many of us, including me would be very interested. I really liked how you snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, and i agree with you the grain is worth saving. Looking forward to the next one. AJ
Hi Andy, I think the drill jammed for a few reasons 1) I was not holding onto the chuck in the tailstock hard enough, 2) The wood was quite wet so may have expanded do the drilling and grabbed the drill and because if point 1, you saw the results and 3) I may have been drilling into the wood a bit too fast, the lathe speed was fine, which caused point 2. I will show some sanding when I do the next video. If you have a look at my pen videos I normally explain what I do on those and the principle is the same on any spindle work. I will go into in in greater depth as you asked. I'm not displeased with the end results on this piece as the grain is so lovely. Looking forward to using the rest and I enjoy knowing where the wood came from and actually saw Colin taking the branches down on one of Grahame's videos. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw PS Sorry for the long answer but you did ask LOL.
Thanks Mark I really should have expected it after so long not turning. Yes, it's at St Fagans. Starts on the 23rd March right through until last day on 4th April. I'll be upstairs opposite the top of the stairs and round the corner from the exit of the lift. Can't miss me really. Hop you can make it mate, your back allowing. Take care Mark. Cheers, Huw
