  • American Christians have not been immune to the anger, division, and fear that characterize this political moment. For many, the prospect of another election year is a source of dread or of numb exhaustion; others have responded with aggression or defensiveness. Reflecting on our recent history, what can we learn from the varied responses? How can we proceed with wisdom, and a Christlike witness, in this turbulent political age?
In his new book The Kingdom, The Power, and The Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism, journalist Tim Alberta speaks to these questions through the stories of his encounters with believers across the country, and through his own experience as a believer and the son of a pastor.
We hosted an Online Conversation with Tim Alberta on February 23 to discuss what faithful political engagement looks like in a time of division and fear.

While never hugely popular, Evangelicals were once generally regarded a positive force in American society and culture. Now, they're despised for their wickedness.

Tim is 100% correct you signed up to be under siege. It was all part of the price you said you were willing to pay. Now you change your mind because of children and grandchildren. No. They are God's too. You intrust them to him and continue to follow. This is place so many have become so wrong.

Tim Alberta is as evangelical about his views as any of the evangelicals that he criticizes. He like so many Christians feel/know they are right about their dogma … and their opponents? They are wrong, not clear eyed, misguided and indoctrinated.
I’m astounded by how little self awareness there is among our journalists turned preachers. It’s almost surreal. His distain for the Christian Fox viewers and conservative talk radio listeners is palpable and seems to show them little kindness nor grace. The culture is changing more rapidly than ever. Its influences are wreaking havoc on the minds and moral sensibilities of our kids and Tim seems to think conservative evangelicals are the real problem and perpetrators of bad ideas and bad influences. His hermeneutics of the our culture seems one dimensional. Perhaps letting the country fall to leftist agendas would be better for our witness? But perhaps the deadly unintended consequences of such folly would be so much worse than any and all strange fears of conservative evangelicalism.

I don't see knowing how to be truly Christian as being anything difficult. It's as easy as reading Jesus sermon on the mount then measuring up oneself to see weather you are practicing what it says or not. MAGA Evangelicals aren't.
