  • One more for the road as the slippery slope of trying to improve this hack speedrun continues on. Just going through the motions to post this run in order to leave no stone unturned as there could be faster runs of this hack by now.
On the last episode of "Let's Use Broken Weapons To Go Fast", I tried to use a couple of quick-kills and clean up some general stuff to make the run faster while using Flame Man's weapon as the foundation of it all. However, there were still a few things that were overlooked that, yet again, caused some drastic changes to how Rockman 2 Basic Master is routed. So now, Snake Man is first. Why? Apparently, Tatsu added more secondary functions to a few other weapons aside from Flame's weapon. In Snake's case, its secondary function aside from being a full-screen pea-shooter, is that by pressing select (funny how this normally useless button is causing quite a bit of havok here), you can "shed your skin" and quite literally, go fast.
This brings up why this is important in the run. The weapons in this hack are pretty strong, to put it lightly. The proof was there in Flame Man's weapon alone with Item 2 added to that mix. Now add to that equation Snake Man's weapon which allows you to go fast, have that ability last permanently until you die, and furthermore continues to last even while switching weapons. With this in mind, the run is now basically "go really fast while staying invincible whenever you feel like it". Yeah, this hack's weapon set is busted AF, if that wasn't made crystal clear already.
As for other general stuff regarding the run, it was still an imperfect run to a degree. Menuing is still a hit or miss issue. I can't seem to get my mind right while working menus for the life of me, but I digress. I missed the Rounder II quick-kill once again in spite of it being easier thanks to the increased movement speed, but it still died pretty fast. Also, there was an odd stage select mishap while trying to pick Gemini Man. I had Stone Man still on the brain even after beating him. At least, I didn't go full-tilt and actually picked the stage. That would have been, you know, dumb? Another thing, this run uses an item that wasn't seen up to this point. Item 3 is used to refill Snake ammo on Wily 3. It works by filling all your weapons and items by means of self-destructing as a trade-off. Item 1 can do something similar, but requires extra menus make it viable, and you've seen how I am with menus. That could lose more time than it could possibly save. Otherwise, this was still a pretty solid run taking all the mistakes into account. On a minor note, if you're noticing the splits going in a "roller-coaster" fashion, it's still comparing the splits from the "Flame first route"; that's all.
I hope that this is all for the new stuff found under zipless rules. It's a decent run and an interesting glimpse into the pros and cons of having too strong a weapon set in any given Mega Man medium. This is especially taking into consideration how this hack is now much easier than its original version. That said... I kinda don't want to keep coming back to this hack. It keeps derailing me in my other projects as I was just expecting this to be a brief aside from other stuff. Oh well, I don't regret any of it, so let's chalk it up to "it is what it is", lol. Seriously though, as always, enjoy the video.
Post Upload Edit: I'm aware that Snake's weapon can stack up its speed increasing ability after "shedding its skin" at least twice, but the info (again) came too late by the time the run was posted. The hack really doesn't make things like that clear which makes knowing this stuff in hindsight amazingly frequent. Just wanted to clear that up before anyone decides to post that information. Appreciate the thought for whoever was considering alerting me about it, though. That said, I'm still going to be done with this for a while just for the sake of not cluttering things up too much with update run after update run for redundancy's sake (unless there's a request to come back to it which I am open to do; just not immediately).
