I see a number of people saying they don't like MV because of the art style of the default graphics. That's like saying you don't like a car because of the air freshener in it. Just replace it and move on. There is a huge community providing all kinds and styles of graphics and sprites to suit any need you have, and you can always just make your own. The company that makes the program even has a $10 package sold for it that gives you HD versions of the graphics from RPG Maker 2000.
2k/3 - Old but gold. XP - Black sheep, but impressive for its time. VX - BWA HA HA HA HA!... no. VX Ace - Talk about taking nothing and making it something. Best one, IMO. It can't do everything MV can, but is a lot more snappier with inputs. MV - Still great, but the move to Javascript was two steps forward and one step back. The engine is literally a web browser, which can cause a lot of delays when displaying resources and lags on weaker hardware.
That lag gave me a frothing hatred for years of MV. Archeia told me it's because my video card is old(it's an on-board video card from 2012), which it indeed is very, despite the rest of my pc being relatively potent. So I'll be getting a new (weak) video card and giving it a shot. Hoping it works :)
yup! Got a secondhand GT420 for literally 100 brl and now MV runs absurdly smooth. So yeah, it's as Archeia said -- MV runs on GPU, if you don't have any it won't run at all; while all other RPG Makers run on CPU
At some point my MV wouldn't let me play test games, I'd get a ".html" error upon opening trying to test it, I could and, did open it in chrome and, stuff and, it worked but, is an unnecessary step... then, it broke completely, haha.

2K3 - beautiful and nostalgic graphical style, powerful eventing system. A lot of the classic RPG Maker games were made with as well and many still swear by it, I’ve never used it extensively myself but I feel like it must’ve done something really right to garner such dedication. It’s kinda like the Smash Bros Melee of the RM community lol. XP - was great to use as a kid, the simplicity of it made it very useful for learning. Mapping system was great, and the tall sprites are easily the best looking of the series. Also has my favorite RPGM game (Master of the Wind) VX Ace - my favorite and the one I still use. It combines great visuals with technical power to give the full package. Massive amount of resources and scripts available to suit your every need. MV - in many ways feels like a modernized Ace, but I think it looks ugly and it runs a lot worse than the others (I have a gaming PC so I don’t really feel it, but I definitely noticed when I tested it on my laptop, and I figure a lot of people playing RPGM games don’t have great systems, so it’s a concern). Despite that I’d say it’s by far the most beginner friendly, especially with the added ease of plugins over scripts, so I’d recommend it to newbies. MZ - basically MV 1.5 HD Remix. Better (and far more complex) animations, integrated ATB system, and map layers brought back. That’s pretty much it. Not worth the price tag in my opinion, but at least most of your MV assets will carry forward.

I really like 2k3's tilesets, but Mack and Blue's tilesets are god-tier. Graphically on par with Sekien Detsu 3, Romancing Saga 3, and Chrono Trigger easily.
Fun fact: I own all of these! How I got them (In the order I got them): Rpg Maker XP: Gift, Rpg Maker VX Ace: Gift from a few months later, Rpg Maker 2k3: I bought myself, Rpg Maker MV: I also bought myself (Almost a year later!).
they need to make an rpg maker than allows somewhat 3d environments like in pokemon for 3ds. i know its not all REALLY 3d, but if it allowed for 3d-ish assets, that'd be great! oh and 8 directional movement as an option without a script and options for other rpg types. action rpg mode needs to be available as an option by default for example, but in reality you have to implement a load of scripts and changes to the fundamentals of the engine before you can get it working like that. would save a TON of time if they just did that for us. id even pay extra for them.
Story of my Life : With XP : Hmm.. This is Simple, Just need to figure out "How to do Maps" Never made a Game. With VX Ace : Hmm.. This is Easy, Just need to figure out "How to add a Good Battle System" Made some 2 Games but weren't so impressive. With MV : Hmm.. This is Complex, If only I could finish my Game with all these Extra Options. Still Making a Game since 2 Years..
oh mY GOD YOU MENTIONED ARA FELL. THAT'S SUCH A COOL GAME!! I try to make games here and there using MV and Ara Fell is such an inspiration, mainly because it was made in RPG Maker 2003 (which is undoubtedly harder to work with because it doesn't have the "crutches" that MV does, to my knowledge.) So not only is it good in general, but it's really good for a game made in RPG Maker 2003.
How is everyone complaining about MV being hard? I never had any other rpg maker and I figured it out in no time. If there were only more selfswitches I could use. A-D isn't enough.
I just bought 2003 a week ago for 3.99 on steam. I like it alot. Then I bought mv for 19.99 on steam. I haven't used it much. Still haven't figured out how to upload new tile sets and sprites.
2K3 has the wonderful animated battle sprites, it makes me want to use it. It also has types of items taken out of XP, such as skill scrolls. It also can show avatars in text boxes, which was also taken out of XP. Those are the three advantages, but mostly it's the battle system. 2K3 has many disadvantages, one of which it's hard to use. Other disadvantages is not being able to change color of characters, and no weather or colored lighting either.
@@SylkaChan I've used both MV and VX. I only prefer MV because of two things: 1.) It's JavaScript. 2.) The damage formulas are more customizable, and I can put in more "complicated" equations that I could in VX Aside from that, I can't really fight my claim any further other than that MV has a built in Side View Battler.
As someone who mucked about with the first RPG maker in High School (a looooong time ago) I decided out of nostalgia sake to research if RPG Mucker is still around. I was extremely excited to see the MV version. Especially since I've become a Javascript developer since then. (The Ruby coding had scared me as a kid.) I want to thank you so much for this video which is helping me decide which one to get. Now, I'm NOT a designer and it always sucked using RTP graphics - I felt like I was just copying everything else that existed out there, and I think that's what prevented me from finishing my games (the largest I had put over two hundred hours into). But MV seems so customizable that I could achieve a unique-feel using their RTP set. I just might have to pick this up and finally create the game of my dreams :-) Thanks for the video, it was awesome.
I've used every version of rpg maker on pc except RM95. MV is worth it. Coming from the group that got into rpgmaker in the days of Don Miguel and Postality Knights, before you could get it in english officially, I've since gone back and purchased them all. To support the devs, and keep this hobby expanding. Hope you dive in and join the community!
You forgot to mention that VX Ace probably has a very old and wide selection of scripts that are well-archived and easy to acquire. Meanwhile, I have yet to see a lot of the scripts VX Ace had on MV, though that one does have its own entire community.
Wolf RPG Editor is also a good and free alternative, I decided to go with it! It’s basically an RPG Maker clone, and it’s pretty old, but it’s very effective and convenient in my opinion, and like I said it’s free! It’s all up to preference though, and I feel Wolf suits my needs best!
I REALLY wish they didn't keep increasing the tile size though. When I use VX Ace, I can't just plop down a 16x16 tile wholecloth. I have to bring it's three sibling tiles along with it, or in the case of MV, it's three siblings, mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, and the creepy uncle. The average person wouldn't think twice about this, but whenever I see a tile in my tilesheet being used two or more times I can't help but think "I sure wish I could just use the first tile and have the empty space be used for something else instead."
Yeah! Or at least they could have made it so you can define the tiles width/height in the editor, or like in MV but without having to use a plugin to later swap a scaled tileset for the real tileset
I agree. It makes it even harder for me to reskin every single tileset to fit whatever level I want to design because I Can't Afford Any Modern Technology DLC
This makes me regret not watching videos before buying. I thought VX Ace was the newest one but I didn’t get a chance to try it until the return policy ran out
I get made fun of for using VX (regular, not Ace) in 2024. And yes, i get it, the newer engines are technically more powerful. But as I've said before and I'll say again, the limitations of an engine are not the limitations of a developer. You can pretty much make any kind of game work with pretty much any engine, it's just about how much work you're willing to do.
At first I used (pirated) XP for around 3 months, then I bought VX Ace. Kinda need some adjusting because of the layer system, but after some time I managed to get the hang of it. After making lotsa games in VX Ace for years, I tried MV and I think it's too much for me ._. When I was using vx ace, I usually use customized, 2x2 px graphics. Now I'm overwhelmed by the large res and the big files from RmMv. I hope I can get the hang of it! Maybe because I'm too accustomed to VXAce, I still think VXAce is better MV.
Holy shit, mv looks amazing. I haven't used RPG makers since back in 2004. Back then I used 2k and 2003 alot. Since I was just 14y old back then without any epic ideas for a proper story (golden sun was my Benchmark) I just stuck with creating tutorials and upload them to forums back in the day so people with good ideas for a story could get their things done :) I'm really intrigued to give mv a try and port it to android. Just saw your video of how easy it is to do the porting 👍🏾
I think it would be nice if they added more new features instead of overhauling the old ones for every new iteration. There are many common RPG game elements or core features not available yet unless you know javascript or use 3rd party plugins, such as a quest log system, manual upgrade options, more unique gear and character abilities (set bonuses, passives, gaining stacks ect), assist in specifying damage formulas, a fully customizable UI and menu navigation with clickable/tappable elements, a built in map feature if you dont wanna use an overworld style of traveling, an achievment system and others.
This video got me thinking about another video idea you could do TeamUnpro. How about a PSA about the prices? Like, if I were to give advice to someone who wants to get into RPG Maker, I would tell them to wait for a sale. Definitely a good tip for the rest of us who can't afford paying $60 on a pretty big commitment, but still wanting to support the developers.
Honestly, I prefer 2003, not just because of all the other reasons to, but because of the ability to use animations for more expansive character animations, especially with the idles and stuff. I seriously don't know why they got rid of that.
Switching to Java Script is actually limiting the potential of the overall software. Would have been better to go with C# or C++. Plus, in truth the RPG Maker series has never been a TRUE RPG game development tool. The RPG genre contains three basic types: turn based (every RM to date), Tactics, & Action. Now yes you can script such stuff in RMXP and up, but that goes against the basic concept "make Any RPG". Furthermore, the RPG Maker series is always out dated by BASIC features found in many RPG games (and not just modern RPGs, but basic stuff from the NES & SNES era).
To be honest, all of them have a use in today's RPG Maker World. 2003 and XP have a feeling that is difficult to reproduce with VX Ace and MV. VX Ace is easiest for beginners to start out on, and is the most compatible out of all. MV can create impressive games
My first rpg maker engine was VX Ace, after that I decided to try out XP, finally the latest version of rpg maker I have now is MV. My favorite would have to be VX Ace because it was my first one, I only bought XP for the extra tilesets and assets to my game. Rpg maker MV was the biggest improvement for me, even though I think the character graphics still suck, I like the hidden third layer but sometimes you can’t tell and accidentally over clips something on accident. To people who are new with rpg maker, id recommend MV as well just because it’s simple to use
Fast response! I like it, I remember watching you back in the "Jack Tiles" days xD good times. I still wonder whatever happened to his tiles. Did you just delete them or were they corrupt? So many questions! D:
XP will always be my favourite, but I just wish a lot of the support was still around. It's hard trying to make something in 2020 using it without knowing what you're doing, trust me, I know first hand xD
I know how you feel. I have the same problem as you. Unfortunately, there aren't that many tutorials for the Xp. Because so many of course use MV. To be honest, I'm tempted to get it. But I prefer the graphics from Xp. I know very well that you put the graphics from Xp in MV. But I think that is not welcomed. And if I were ever that good at pixel art, they would be very similar to this graphic anyway. (sigh) I am completely ready to learn, no problem. I love to learn new things. And then some could come and say that I stole them. Therefore, if I ever get a game ready, only my friends or I are allowed to play it, and it will not be sold or published. Unless I jump into the deep end and try it anyway. I'm just glad that I understand English well and not only rely on tutorials in German. I just can't write properly in English. But as I didn't know anything about RPG Maker, the German UA-camr DonF204 helped me very well and I still like to stop by him. But I'm still looking for those who do good tutorials whether German or English doesn't matter. So for me it's just a hobby and I would be happy if I could create a complex and beautiful game. Sorry I hope I didn't write too much :) Greetings from Germany :)
@@sarahangel3481 My sentiments exactly. In short, the real issue is that XP tutorials, videos, and guides are either outdated or replaced by those made in MV. Although I've dabbled in fun little projects, I really wanna try and make something special in an RPG Maker engine. I'm tempted to buy MV, but with my reluctance to spend money during tight times, I fear I wouldn't get the most out of my purchase, at least not for a while :/
Yes i understand. Believe me it's exactly the same with me. I really want to learn everything about games that can be made with the XP. But nobody seems to do more tutorials about it. What a shame. Seems like I have to do everything myself. And I have next to no idea. I hope to find some that can help me, especially with scripting. :)
And it will be a long time before I can even buy MV. Because of the pandemic, it's hard to make enough money. And then I'm still not sure if it's really worth it. :(
I just bought MV. I figured well it's the newest so, it must be the best. I'm a total noob so i'm watching tons of tutorials now and right away I realize something. I don't like any of the included resources. Just don't like the look of any of it. So, I've learned that what I want is the same look as the good ol' super nes days. Looks like I'll need to search for and download all those types of resources now...
RPG Maker 2k3 by default limits graphics to 16-bit (likely due to how old it is), and its eventing system is pretty powerful but might be confusing to get used to properly. If you want to go for the SNES look, RPG maker 2003 would be the easiest way --BUT-- MV would be the best way since its far more developed and much less limited
I got vx like... a few months before MV came out and on seeing everything MV had... that just kinda took the wind out of my sales because 'well... yea It figures. pick a horse only for something that is exactly what you want (linux support) with more flexibility.' I feel like i goofed. Especially with how janky ace's default everything looks. Edit: MV is as of this moment twenty bucks. for better or worse pulled the trigger on it.
Don't think like that. There's still a lot of things you can do with VX. If you keep thinking that something more expensive would make you better off, you've fallen into the trap of excuses.
"If you keep thinking that something more expensive would make you better off, you've fallen into the trap of excuses." I love that, it's so true too "There's still a lot of things you can do with VX." This is especially true if andrew were to learn scripting :) RGSS is a lot simpler than javascript imo lol but scripting can still be hard to wrap around for some
The thing that I don't like about MV is that it uses JavaScript... This means that the games you create with it are very much like web browsers, which I'm not a fan of. I do realize that this method is what makes the games multiplatform (Win, Mac, Linux), but I would still much rather have my game be a native application instead. I also think that native support makes the games easier to run on older systems, which I do value with these sort of retro-style games. I think VX Ace will probably be my next RPG Maker if the price ever comes down a notch. There's also a project called MKXP which makes it possible to run RPG Maker XP - VX Ace games on Linux and Mac. Until then I'm working with good old RPG Maker 2003. The event-scripting in RPG Maker 2003 is pretty wonky, but it gets the job done until I can get my hands on Ruby in VX Ace.
I have been using rpg maker vx ace for quite some time but I think I'm gonna buy MV considering it is on a banger sale. I'm working on a game with all custom graphics and all those resolution- and custom settings seem really neat. This video was really helpful.
2003 - I didn't used it very much, I was too late for that, but for sure, the best horror games to this day were made in 2003, also great amout of well done games, you know, with passion and not "make another game because." XP is most nostalgic, I had ton of fun with it, 3-layer system was great and easy. You could easily made basic rpg games with it. VX and Ace - Eh... For me it's like waste of money, I did nothing in them, I could not manage to finish any project, everytime because of something MV - I'm using it for month now, so I still can say anything for sure, but my god, plugins are amazing, you can do so much with your game that you never could. There are many things, that they could easily change for better, unnecessary limitations, bad designs... But you can overcome 99% of that with plugins. So for now it's the best RPG Maker for me.
Aw man, I've been learning Ruby cause I googled "RPG maker programming language" and I got Ruby, didn't know MV used JavaScript till I watched this video
Good video! I've got my eye on the console version of MV that's coming out soon. It seems to be just like the PC version, which is good because all the other RPG maker games on console have been very watered down compared to the real thing lol
VX Ace is by far the best that I have (I don’t have MV yet), except it has a doodoo soundtrack and bgms. I just import the files from XP for the music.
I just wish it was effortless to choose 16x16 tiles and 320x240 resolution in the modern RPG Makers like it was in RPG Maker 2003. I love the SNES style. That resolution offers nice low resolution pixel art but just enough detail.
Unfortunately MV doesn't have the flying/transparent feature. Is it possible to revive enemies in MV? At least you can revive enemies in MV (I tested it already). You can make the battle system of XP feel more like 2K3 by using the character sprite graphics for your players rather than the battlers.
I guess I should try and get MV since I've used 2003 and it seems a bit.... well I don't really like using it, either because it's a bit limited in what it can do, or because I have no idea what I'm doing (probably the latter)
it's very limited under the hood ; you're better off with a more modern engine, but since you're talking about MV, if you can find MZ on sale for p cheap get that instead, it's "technically" the same thing but you have a few changes in the UI that you might enjoy, in particular manual map layers
Because it's like the "lite" version of RPG Maker. It doesn't let you create characters, you don't have the three layers of XP, it has a horrible resolution, etc. Maybe other RPG Makers aren't perfect, but all of them have a little advantage that the others doesn't have. However, VX is the only one that really REALLY doesn't have any advantage. I hope you've undestood :)
To all of you I strongly recommend getting click team fusion. The limits of witch are basically endless and you don’t really need to code in the traditional sense. But if your lazy use his
I used rpg maker vx ace when I was 10, so I'm super biased by my nostalgia. But, if 10 year old me could learn it, likely anyone could, so if MV isn't in the budjet, get VX Ace, I doubt you'll be dissapointed.
VXAce has in my opinion some of the best scripts and assets and I don't know Javascript as well as I do Ruby, and parallaxing is better than in-game map creation anyway, so the main thing that makes me look at MV is the included mouse system (rather than the wonky RGSS3 mouse scripts), less lag (kinda?), and larger square sizes.
As a VX ace user, i would say to use that one, but i can see the benfits of all of them. MV has the benifit of plugins. VX ace has a lite version if you dont want to pay, XP's tileset system is very good. and 2003, its old?
Thanks again Unpro Pro!! what about the Side view battle system? is it automatically available without scripts this time? Does it also have rounded cliff walls or still square looking? lol
VXAce feels muddy, limited, and colorless, XP is so good and it has a nice variety. MV's is so colorful, but there is barely any of it so it comes of as a bit of a turn off.
Also wondering if ruby and Java scripting replaced events in the newer version. You stated that they were there but did not mention if the original switch system and events were still in place with the newer versions .
I have yet to find an MV tutorial that's Shaun Spalding levels of "break the process down into steps that are so small and so simple, you literally cannot mess up" Edit: The absolute bean-soupification of my brain has caused me to own MV for an entire YEAR without noticing the literal Tutorial Selector listed under the "Help" tab that's IN THE FREAKING SOFTWARE
Also! i think the Best Ost of all the The Rpg Makers is XP is just sooo good. I don't know why it has this feeling of a magical world that the other ones don't seem to Click with me. I won't blame you if you use the Default music for XP, Is Just An Amazing Ost.
@@TeamUnpro I have to say, the MV is really interesting though because I'm a JavaScript dev. But there's something about the way the newer makers in general and also the MV animates things that always seems a little unnatural, almost like being smoothed-out to a point where it feels a little slow but somehow feels a little clunky at the same time.
A way to make upscaled resources (like old Mack and Blue and all the Seiken Densetsu 3 rips) actually look good would definitely a way to convince me of mv :D

Gosh if Rpg Maker XP was a great mate to create a Pokemon game with, it was hard to use by the way and lots of tutorials on UA-cam were kinda useless to me because random errors used to pop up a little bit too often so I abandoned my half-created project. I started to work with Rpg Maker MV to make a simple test game (since I have this great idea to create a mario/kirby rpg) like a couple of days ago, it is true that creating battles and animations is easier but there are only two things that I miss: MP3 files usage (now you need a m4a + ogg file and there is a duration limit but I just figured this last detail right now) and the layers system (as well as the easier mapping, now I need to map parallax which is a really hard and boring thing to do since it takes out hours of time)
I love XP art style and how easy to get community scripts for it and VX. Ruby its so easy to understand. I do like the stock soundtrack of VX more though.
2003 and XP are by far the best if you care about performance and having decent RTP assets to work with. VX Ace, MV and MZ are just fugly in terms of the stock assets they offer. MV and MZ are only worth it if you have prior JavaScript programming knowledge and want to make a browser or mobile game.
Honestly loosing my mind over rpg maker mv at the moment because it has everything I need EXCEPT the correct tilesize. No plugins are working and my style clashes extremely with 48x48 tiles
Ah really? Interesting, I thought since the steam release and changes made to the software compared to the old original version, that they'd be relatively the same. Interesting though, this makes me want to look more into RPG Maker 2000.
I got Vx Ace and MV and i still think vx Ace is better choice for me. Mv is cool and you can make cool story with it, but i still think vx Ace is easier
I'm trying to decide which one would be best to make my first game in. I got XP, MV, and might get 2003. I kind of think it might be better to use RPG Maker 2003, but I seem to remember hearing that launching games made in XP don't work so well anymore. I'm hoping to release it on steam or something if I ever get it done.
2003 games (Like ARA Fell for exmaple) are on steam and doing quite well, just remember, its mostly about the story. Ara Fell told a beautiful story and it told it very well :) Tell the story well and the game should sell it's self.
I also forgot to mention RPG Maker XP's tileset system can have images as tall as you want so you can have an insane amount of tiles in 1 tileset.

TeamUnpro true! By the way... not spamming but I’ve just released my first game demo www.dropbox.com/sh/zwy9wd249w26odn/AAAiH8dlllEArqocqqSxeANxa?dl=0 if you have time I would love for you to try it!
Another good thing you should mention- they get a lot more expensive as it goes on
they need to make an rpg maker than allows somewhat 3d environments like in pokemon for 3ds. i know its not all REALLY 3d, but if it allowed for 3d-ish assets, that'd be great! oh and 8 directional movement as an option without a script and options for other rpg types. action rpg mode needs to be available as an option by default for example, but in reality you have to implement a load of scripts and changes to the fundamentals of the engine before you can get it working like that. would save a TON of time if they just did that for us. id even pay extra for them.
dude I fully agree
Im surprised they haven't tried another 3D RPG Maker like the did with RPG Maker 2 & 3 for the PS2
Try out Neverwinter Nights aurora toolset
try rpg paper maker!
Is possible to do something like pokemon black and white style 3d in mv
Story of my Life :
With XP : Hmm.. This is Simple, Just need to figure out "How to do Maps"
Never made a Game.
With VX Ace : Hmm.. This is Easy, Just need to figure out "How to add a Good Battle System"
Made some 2 Games but weren't so impressive.
"Abomination" and, "wtf is this" made me chuckle.
I just bought 2003 a week ago for 3.99 on steam. I like it alot. Then I bought mv for 19.99 on steam. I haven't used it much. Still haven't figured out how to upload new tile sets and sprites.
You got MV for $19.99!?!?
Bro MV goes for like £60.00 in the UK...
@@PhoenixWrightAceAttorney It's $16.00 on steam at the moment.
@@PhoenixWrightAceAttorney he got it on sale because in the us it is $80.00
Anything with the word "Java" in it is powerful. Nah, I'm just traumatized.
I would think MV makes VX obsolete, besides being more expensive.
@@SylkaChan I've used both MV and VX. I only prefer MV because of two things:
1.) It's JavaScript.
2.) The damage formulas are more customizable, and I can put in more "complicated" equations that I could in VX
Aside from that, I can't really fight my claim any further other than that MV has a built in Side View Battler.
Enjoy RPG Maker MV, keep me posted with what you create if you want~
I've used every version of rpg maker on pc except RM95. MV is worth it. Coming from the group that got into rpgmaker in the days of Don Miguel and Postality Knights, before you could get it in english officially, I've since gone back and purchased them all. To support the devs, and keep this hobby expanding. Hope you dive in and join the community!
How have things gone?
RPG Maker 2003 and MV have always been my favorites. So easy and flexible!
You forgot to mention that VX Ace probably has a very old and wide selection of scripts that are well-archived and easy to acquire. Meanwhile, I have yet to see a lot of the scripts VX Ace had on MV, though that one does have its own entire community.
MV is my favorite, as somebody who began with 2k. Mostly for the deployment options.
Just bought RPG Maker 2003 because I've spent a bit of my childhood on this program :D
Ja tam wole RPG Maker VX Ace xD
The file size?
What's the issue there?
Holy shit, mv looks amazing. I haven't used RPG makers since back in 2004. Back then I used 2k and 2003 alot. Since I was just 14y old back then without any epic ideas for a proper story (golden sun was my Benchmark) I just stuck with creating tutorials and upload them to forums back in the day so people with good ideas for a story could get their things done :)
I'm really intrigued to give mv a try and port it to android. Just saw your video of how easy it is to do the porting 👍🏾
I had VX ace when I first started but than when MV came out I switched over to that and have actually just finished my first ever game fully =3.
I just can't stand MV's whole chibi aesthetic, especially the battlers. I'd recommend VX Ace for a new user.
Same here but that's where your artistic talent kicking in to make it look not chibi aesthetic, lol.
Aren’t vx ace’s characters also chibi?
Sorry I'm new to this whole thing. So you can change the sprites to not look chibi?
you can change them to not look chibi by using photoshop i guess
There are a few templates for charsets on the offical rpg maker forum. Search for "Candacis" for quick founds. :)
Good idea :)
I just bought RPG Maker MV :D
And Merry Christmas!
Merry christmas to you too! ^.^
I absolutely love MV it was my first ever RPG maker and trying the others.........I'll choose MV any day!
I think I’m going to buy VX ace, I’m just going to try to build maps and i’ll become better, i’ve been doing things with Wolf RPG editor.
I use both XP and MV, XP primarily for Pokemon Essentials, while I use MV for whatever I feel like making...
Pokemon Essentials is amazing
My first rpg maker engine was VX Ace, after that I decided to try out XP, finally the latest version of rpg maker I have now is MV. My favorite would have to be VX Ace because it was my first one, I only bought XP for the extra tilesets and assets to my game. Rpg maker MV was the biggest improvement for me, even though I think the character graphics still suck, I like the hidden third layer but sometimes you can’t tell and accidentally over clips something on accident. To people who are new with rpg maker, id recommend MV as well just because it’s simple to use
"sometimes you can't tell" i know right? That bugs me a little, I kinda wish they would have just stuck with a layering system like XP had tbh
TeamUnpro yeah I feel the same
Couldn't have come at a better time! Thank you TeamUnpro! C:
Derpy me, need to change it back to TheUnproPro since its not a team anymore :P
And welcome! Hope you're happy with what ever RPG Maker you pick!
Fast response! I like it, I remember watching you back in the "Jack Tiles" days xD good times. I still wonder whatever happened to his tiles. Did you just delete them or were they corrupt? So many questions! D:
Idr what happened myself lol, I remember having to reformat tho so maybe they got lost in the reformat
Maybe... or maybe you have been working on a game in secret that includes Jack's Tiles? ;)
XP will always be my favourite, but I just wish a lot of the support was still around. It's hard trying to make something in 2020 using it without knowing what you're doing, trust me, I know first hand xD
Oh for sure! Absolutely
(sigh)
I am completely ready to learn, no problem.
Sorry I hope I didn't write too much :)
Greetings from Germany :)
Just discovered you can actually create your own sprites lol...Looks like so much fun. man I've got so much to learn...
Thanks for the info bro. Are you familiar with Spriter? I'm checking it out now...How do you feel about it? Worth the money?
I started with FES. AKA the 3DS version.
I got vx like... a few months before MV came out and on seeing everything MV had... that just kinda took the wind out of my sales because 'well... yea It figures. pick a horse only for something that is exactly what you want (linux support) with more flexibility.'
I feel like i goofed. Especially with how janky ace's default everything looks.
Edit: MV is as of this moment twenty bucks. for better or worse pulled the trigger on it.
lmao ace does have some pretty jank defaults x"D but hey, best of luck. I hope you can get MV soon!
It's twenty bucks. for better or worse i pulled the trigger. Now i just gotta force organization on the idea soup i have.
Best of luck and have fun! :)
He says “RPG Maker 2003” really fast like one word😂
I have been using rpg maker vx ace for quite some time but I think I'm gonna buy MV considering it is on a banger sale. I'm working on a game with all custom graphics and all those resolution- and custom settings seem really neat.
This video was really helpful.
2003 - I didn't used it very much, I was too late for that, but for sure, the best horror games to this day were made in 2003, also great amout of well done games, you know, with passion and not "make another game because."
XP is most nostalgic, I had ton of fun with it, 3-layer system was great and easy. You could easily made basic rpg games with it.
VX and Ace - Eh... For me it's like waste of money, I did nothing in them, I could not manage to finish any project, everytime because of something
MV - I'm using it for month now, so I still can say anything for sure, but my god, plugins are amazing, you can do so much with your game that you never could. There are many things, that they could easily change for better, unnecessary limitations, bad designs... But you can overcome 99% of that with plugins. So for now it's the best RPG Maker for me.
holy shit you speak fast!
I got RPG Maker VX in a Humble Bundle and the lack of people mentioning it (in comparison to VX Ace) makes me sad.
I'm currently dicking around in RPG Maker VX Ace Lite. Will probably buy RPG Maker 2003 or MV if either goes on sale in the future.
Now they are like at 75%
Aw man, I've been learning Ruby cause I googled "RPG maker programming language" and I got Ruby, didn't know MV used JavaScript till I watched this video
The one thing hindering me from getting MV is the battle system is front-view, so you can’t easily make a retro jrpg
There's already a built in setting in MV to set the battle style to side view
Good video! I've got my eye on the console version of MV that's coming out soon. It seems to be just like the PC version, which is good because all the other RPG maker games on console have been very watered down compared to the real thing lol
There is a new RPG Maker out now too. I don't know much about it except that it brought back parallax backgrounds.
Be careful with that;
It's basically the same thing just a little better than MV. Not worth a full blown $80.
RPG Maker MZ lets you do this now
@@TeamUnpro Nice! I'll have to take a look at it soon. :)
I chose VX Ace because I randomly found the RTP files on my computer, but I think I'll go for MV.
Man I used RPG MAKER 2000 soon much and than 2003 when it came out it was a blast with those side battles. Nostalgia rush all over the place!
Here's an idea.
Get all the RPG makers and choose which one will work best with
The game your making and repeat every new game.
What about rpg maker fes? It was pretty good if you just wanted to develop a little thing on the go...tho I'm so excited for mv coming to switch!
It's out in Japan already, I bought it, and it's sooooooo slow.
thanks for the video, if anyone's watching now they have a crazy sale on the website. i just got 2003, xp and vx ace for $23 :D
Unfortunately MV doesn't have the flying/transparent feature. Is it possible to revive enemies in MV? At least you can revive enemies in MV (I tested it already). You can make the battle system of XP feel more like 2K3 by using the character sprite graphics for your players rather than the battlers.
My personal favorite is RPG Maker 2003.
It's old, but it's still just so good.
i want a courses for making rpg games, any recommendation?
I guess I should try and get MV since I've used 2003 and it seems a bit....
well I don't really like using it, either because it's a bit limited in what it can do, or because I have no idea what I'm doing (probably the latter)
it's very limited under the hood ; you're better off with a more modern engine, but since you're talking about MV, if you can find MZ on sale for p cheap get that instead, it's "technically" the same thing but you have a few changes in the UI that you might enjoy, in particular manual map layers
Thank you for the upload. Just bought MV from the Steam sale.
Greetings. Is the RPG Maker MV For Nintendo Switch worth getting? It's on sale for $35 dollars but I don't know if I should get the game.
I know this is old but I accidentally bought vx instead of ace and I was wondering why everyone hates it so much
Because it's like the "lite" version of RPG Maker. It doesn't let you create characters, you don't have the three layers of XP, it has a horrible resolution, etc. Maybe other RPG Makers aren't perfect, but all of them have a little advantage that the others doesn't have. However, VX is the only one that really REALLY doesn't have any advantage. I hope you've undestood :)
i choose rpg maker 2000.
because it was my childhood
To all of you I strongly recommend getting click team fusion. The limits of witch are basically endless and you don’t really need to code in the traditional sense. But if your lazy use his

I used rpg maker vx ace when I was 10, so I'm super biased by my nostalgia. But, if 10 year old me could learn it, likely anyone could, so if MV isn't in the budjet, get VX Ace, I doubt you'll be dissapointed.
can you add your own sprites to rpg maker mv?
CAPNAM12 yes
@@Sunny-lu9un now thats a weird name. You seem like an incel
CAPNAM12 its... a joke
VXAce has in my opinion some of the best scripts and assets and I don't know Javascript as well as I do Ruby, and parallaxing is better than in-game map creation anyway, so the main thing that makes me look at MV is the included mouse system (rather than the wonky RGSS3 mouse scripts), less lag (kinda?), and larger square sizes.
is there a pokemon essentials plug in for mv or only on xp?
Lol, I’ve never played a single RPG (excluding the Pokémon games) and yet I have a fascination with making them....
As a VX ace user, i would say to use that one, but i can see the benfits of all of them. MV has the benifit of plugins. VX ace has a lite version if you dont want to pay, XP's tileset system is very good. and 2003, its old?
p much spot on
The 2000/2003 part, basically it'll run on potato hardware and on top of that, its picture system is way more powerful
Thanks again Unpro Pro!! what about the Side view battle system? is it automatically available without scripts this time? Does it also have rounded cliff walls or still square looking? lol
XP and VXAce has a best RTP.
Change my mind.
VXAce feels muddy, limited, and colorless, XP is so good and it has a nice variety. MV's is so colorful, but there is barely any of it so it comes of as a bit of a turn off.
Also wondering if ruby and Java scripting replaced events in the newer version. You stated that they were there but did not mention if the original switch system and events were still in place with the newer versions
.
I have yet to find an MV tutorial that's Shaun Spalding levels of "break the process down into steps that are so small and so simple, you literally cannot mess up"
Edit: The absolute bean-soupification of my brain has caused me to own MV for an entire YEAR without noticing the literal Tutorial Selector listed under the "Help" tab that's IN THE FREAKING SOFTWARE
Lol shaun do be thorough
Also! i think the Best Ost of all the The Rpg Makers is XP is just sooo good. I don't know why it has this feeling of a magical world that the other ones don't seem to Click with me. I won't blame you if you use the Default music for XP, Is Just An Amazing Ost.
All other RPGMakers : We were in the video!
RPGMaker MZ : oh
This is 6 years ago
which RPG maker is the best?
Honestly, I'm just usíng the 2000, don't even need the 2k3
The o.g's dont
@@TeamUnpro I have to say, the MV is really interesting though because I'm a JavaScript dev. But there's something about the way the newer makers in general and also the MV animates things that always seems a little unnatural, almost like being smoothed-out to a point where it feels a little slow but somehow feels a little clunky at the same time.
A way to make upscaled resources (like old Mack and Blue and all the Seiken Densetsu 3 rips) actually look good would definitely a way to convince me of mv :D

@@ddecesedd Rpg Maker XP
Ruby is a great first language
Thanks for the video my guy, really helpful!
Gosh if Rpg Maker XP was a great mate to create a Pokemon game with, it was hard to use by the way and lots of tutorials on UA-cam were kinda useless to me because random errors used to pop up a little bit too often so I abandoned my half-created project. I started to work with Rpg Maker MV to make a simple test game (since I have this great idea to create a mario/kirby rpg) like a couple of days ago, it is true that creating battles and animations is easier but there are only two things that I miss: MP3 files usage (now you need a m4a + ogg file and there is a duration limit but I just figured this last detail right now) and the layers system (as well as the easier mapping, now I need to map parallax which is a really hard and boring thing to do since it takes out hours of time)
XP is for making pokemon, MV is good for RPGs and than...MZ's coming...
I love XP art style and how easy to get community scripts for it and VX. Ruby its so easy to understand. I do like the stock soundtrack of VX more though.
I agree with everything you said except the soundtrack~
Maybe it's nostalgia, but RPG Maker XP has some banger midis
I know your video was made before MZ, but would you recommend MV or MZ these days for someone starting out?
Maybe one day; but not anytime soon, sorry D:
makes me glad i started with mv kek. if only i had the motivation to make anything good
2003 and XP are by far the best if you care about performance and having decent RTP assets to work with.
VX Ace, MV and MZ are just fugly in terms of the stock assets they offer.
MV and MZ are only worth it if you have prior JavaScript programming knowledge and want to make a browser or mobile game.
XP was def the prime
Honestly loosing my mind over rpg maker mv at the moment because it has everything I need EXCEPT the correct tilesize. No plugins are working and my style clashes extremely with 48x48 tiles
2k3 actually had and still has some improvement to the 2k not just the battle system.
Ah really? Interesting, I thought since the steam release and changes made to the software compared to the old original version, that they'd be relatively the same. Interesting though, this makes me want to look more into RPG Maker 2000.
I got Vx Ace and MV and i still think vx Ace is better choice for me. Mv is cool and you can make cool story with it, but i still think vx Ace is easier
great video for beginners. thank you
Im gonna get XP, VX Ace, MV, im just starting off and planning to do an rpg game, im mainly getting XP for pokemon but, is that good? Any tips?
I'm trying to decide which one would be best to make my first game in. I got XP, MV, and might get 2003. I kind of think it might be better to use RPG Maker 2003, but I seem to remember hearing that launching games made in XP don't work so well anymore. I'm hoping to release it on steam or something if I ever get it done.
2003 games (Like ARA Fell for exmaple) are on steam and doing quite well, just remember, its mostly about the story. Ara Fell told a beautiful story and it told it very well :) Tell the story well and the game should sell it's self.
