As someone who enjoys "coding" using events, RPG Maker 2003 has been my go-to forever. WIth MZ however, it's finally more 1:1 with RPG Maker 2003 when it comes to event commands. There are still some extra features in 2003 particularly when it comes to picture placement, but MZ is good enough that I very much enjoy using it.
Great video as always. For us the greatest selling point for MZ was the layers tool. We use a lot of asymmetrical assets in our game, so being able to shift between four layers allowed us to create much more organic looking maps, without plugins.
There is one upside with MV. It's now one of the newer RPG Maker variants that shows up *super* cheap when on sale. I got VX Ace from humble ages ago, and found information on it to be scarce. MV at least has a few plugins and some tutorials, and isn't $80 (it cost me $15). Also, Javascript is nice in both cases.
When MZ was announced I was really on the fence, as they revealed more such as the move routes, the layer system [which I still don't 100% understand so if someone wants to give it to me simple, or as we say KISS[Keep it simple stupid] i'd appreciate that...same with pictures, I don't understand the X and Y stuff fully] the MZ system seemed to push my forward, and I did enjoy it and use it now, to me it's better than MV but that's probably cause I had MV when it came out, and only made 2 'complete' games...which had either issues or unfixable bugs that drove me into a spiral of just stopping...plus a lot of bridges were cut after the 2nd one...god I never wanna do that again. So hopefully with MZ I can truly make much better games.
I am really confused by RPG makers decision to keep making things ...arguably worse after XP. XPs map editor was a bit more clunky sure, but you had more options with how tiles worked and the sprites were so much better. IDK why they're going with these extra chibi sprites but I wish they'd do something a bit less ...crunched?
I completely agree. One of the biggest reasons I haven't moved away from VX Ace was because of the chibification of all the default art assets. I get you're not meant to use them in an actual game release, but some people don't have the option of getting well-made original art. XP's was also a pretty iconic style. It had that distinct 90s anime look like 2000, but it was polished and slightly cartoonish (but not as chibi as MV). For me, VX/Ace hit the sweet spot in terms of character design, even though I found the monster designs to be a bit too dark and edgy and preferred the XP ones. The MV monsters IMO look decent at best and godawful at worst.
RPG Maker MV has better platform support and performance as alternative operating systems become more popular. I would never sacrifice these for some measly technical changes that plugins can achieve anyways.
It's great to have an updated comparison, and I think you covered everything major. A couple things I'd add that weigh in MV's favor: 1) Spritesheet animations are possible in MZ, but only with some work/plugins. This is imo a major negative for people with retro styled games for which particle effects are not a good fit. 2) Plugin availability may differ until more plugin devs catch up (though for YEP users it is mostly covered by Visustella). 3) Reid is lamer than Harold.
Okay I was with you up until the Reid comment. No one is lamer than Harold. ヽ(`⌒´ )ノ For real though, I actually haven't tried importing sheeted animations into MZ myself yet, so I didn't realise it was actually that tricky! I'd heard that people had done it and never heard it was difficult or anything, so it's something I'm gonna have to brush up on, and maybe I can make a tutorial to make that a little easier for people. :D That's actually such a big negative though if it can't be simplified. And yeah the plugin situation for MV vs. MZ is hopefully something that will start to look up for non-VS users. I'm really hoping that some people in the community can pick up the torch and start producing more plugins for the community, or maybe some developers could even be hired by Komodo/Kadokawa to produce new plugins. I know there are a number of non-VS plugins out there already, but it's a shame that there isn't anywhere near as much interest as MV had. (Also Reid is definitely better than Harold, fite me)
Really appreciated this and I like that you didn't push one version over the other onto people. You gave good details and allowed for people to decide for themselves which is best for their needs.
I stood before this decission (MV or MZ) a few days ago. But I ultimately chose MV because it - other than MZ seems to be fully Linux / Steam Engine compatible. While the other seems to work kinda, but not out of the box. And as you can get most of the things MZ offers with plugins and a bit of code-wizardry... I believe I made the right decission.
Thanks for this! Seeing move routes are a big deal for me as I'm going for real time ish combat by having events move and time out which are a slow process in MV and I use an insane amount of them. Also all the features you listed are nice haves so I'll defenatly be looking to get MZ!

MV did have Yanfly's ATB plugin but it's outdated so some stuff doesn't work with it. It's also just not as smooth as just having the option built in to the engine. Just got MZ today and was fiddling with it, really excited to port my project and continue on
i know a lot of peoples say that mz is so cool and stuff, and i mean i have it but i also have mv and i just prefer using mv, it has a better ui (ingame and in the maker), it has better art, etc.. when i used mz i was confused af, maybe one day i'll give it a try to do a little game but for now i'll stick with mv
I'm so used to using RPG Maker 2000 that every time I try a different RPG Maker I get really frustrated at how I can't do certain things that I could do with the 2K version. MZ lacks the decent ominous/horror type music that 2K had, and I can't seem to put a mailbox in anyone's front yard... 2K of course didn't have animated battler graphics like MZ has, but at least you could reasonably have animals as part of your party. If you have an animal in your party in MZ with the battle in side view, your animal has no battler graphic. Also, MZ just needs more animals in general.
I was really unsure which version to get since I haven't touched the engine since XP, thanks to this great video (that is even more relevent with winter sales) it was an easy choice for me! (MZ).
Thank you for this video! This convinced me to get MZ over MV even though when they're both on sale, MZ is still considerably more expensive. Thank you again!!

i apreciate this info so much. im curently working on a game but have no coding experience or game making experience. ive made maps for games using outdated engines, but no actual game making exp. im a story teller if you will, and this looks like just the engine to use to be able to share my story while also allowing the user to feel involved in it. not as a outside spectator, but as a part of the story itself. im probably going to watch most of your videos on this engine, so thank you in advance. also if at all possible id love to send you the story board and get your opinion on it great vid btw! love your voice, sounds so well planned and your inflection is impeccable
Loved MV but the only thing i hate is the chibi style. Its hard to find good sprites without stealing content. I hate the chibi characters and im still sad that there is no option for character creations to use larger characters even tho the tilesets would be the next problem because everything is for small characters. RPG Maker XP Characters were perfect, dont know why they dont kept them.
This was useful, I’ve been using MV on the PlayStation and wanted to get a new one on my laptop to take it serious and needed to know if I should repurchase MV but MZ seems better with the final fantasy atb system
Thanks for the guide! I'm about to release something I've been working on for around a year in VX Ace and have been looking into upgrading for the next one. Sounds like there's some nice additions to MZ but shame about the price hike between the two...
Theres one downside to MZ, which may affect many users. MZ requires a strong computer to use, so if you are a low-end or mid-end user I'm sorry but you will not have the best experience (or be able to experience it at all). And the games made by MZ also will require its playerbase to have the same requeriments too. And that's mainly why MV is still out there! If you don't have a strong device to play MZ, *or,* wants your ge to hit all audiences, not just high-end users, I would recommend you go for MV instead.
You are very relatable with the issues! I have macOS Big Sur, so MZ is my only option, but it will be great, thank you! I’ll use MZ3D for my game because of the layering system making it much easier!
Mac can run MV and MZ the only annoying thing for Mac is you cannot use the non Steam version of MV on a Mac, not that there is a difference if anything people who don't use it on Steam are more screwed then Mac users since we don't get automatic updates when they come out and Steam has assets sales far more often, so having a non steam copy really just screws you over :/
As someone who is still using ace.... yeah should probably upgrade as soon as my Game is out. MZ seems to look way nicer and the Layer-system makes mapping far easier (So far i need to trick around with events for any kind of overlapping graphic. And worse A-Tiles cant overlap at all)
Absolutely! I'm really glad you're gonna finish your game in Ace first, since a lot of RM developers see a new engine and transfer their game projects over, and.. it usually ends up being a cycle of upgrading engines and never finishing their game, hahah.. I'd definitely recommend checking out the free trial before you buy too, just to be absolutely sure it's what you wanna use before dropping money on it. :D
This is a great and informative video! I'm still having trouble figuring out how to create a player character customization screen with custom artwork I've made... I only find videos talking about the character generator being used. I don't want to use it to create the character customization section. The bigger tiles thing may help as well, I need to find a link to track it down, sadly. Do you know how to create a more 'custom' character creation screen? I need help.
This is something you'd need a plugin for. SumRndmDde had a plugin for MV but I'm not sure if it's compatible with MZ. You can also try searching for Visual Equipment plugins, as they may be able to help!
Thanks for the video - that's really helpful. As MZ is currently on offer as part of the Steam Winter sale I think I'll give it a go as I would love to make my own game.
Hello, it seems you still read comments so i have a small question on steam, MV has a better rating while also having more reviews, so i was wondering if there was any downsides to MZ
MV probably has more ratings and reviews because it's been out for longer and has become cheaper over time, but there are no downsides to MZ. It's just a better version of MZ but it's more expensive and doesn't have such a wide array of plugins from the community.
I use to use VX Ace but due to the resolution limitations I dropped it despite spending hours using it and spending money on it. At the time I was making a game in 2015 the standard resolution was 1080p. This is extremely difficult to view in full screen and difficult to focus on in windows mode due to the small size.
Yep, absolutely! If you can't afford MZ at the moment, then I can definitely still recommend MV as a solid engine. It's an awesome starting place for new devs and still holds up really well. :D
I mean besides literally everything mentioned in the video like the new RTP, improvements to the engine's performance, etc. then yeah they're very similar. But they're not identical, no.
I think I'll go with whatever version ends up getting the best JS plugin support. I'm still on VX Ace because my current project needs scripts that are only on that version. If something similar popped up on MZ, I'd move to it even if it would take a ton of work to recreate the game.
RPG Maker works out of the box without any knowledge of coding languages. Everything is just snippets of code automatically done for you, and you use the eventing system to input your own data. You can make more advanced modifications to your projects by using Javascript, but it's not always necessary if RPG Maker can do what you need on its own. There are also other people out there who have released Javascript plugins that you can add to your games without knowing how the code works.
MV has had different battle systems via plugins for a VERY long time, Yanfly made if I recall 3? Then You have MogHunter's just to name a few and they don't cause any real compatibility or hit preformance. Still unsure if I want to upgrade to MZ yet, the assets and the move route stuff would be really nice and since it's the same scale there's no need to do anything weird to make them work unlike using older XP or VX Ace assets. The map layering in XP for whatever reason always confused me tho but it did have nice things it. TileD doesn't do anything helpful in comparison even though it tries.
Awesome comparison video! Super straight to the points which is rare these days for youtube. i think I've decided on MZ now because autosave sounds very preferable. I'm the kind of person who likes being able to turn off my game at any point instead of hunting for a save point. does anyone know if maker runs ok on macos though? I had to refund omori because it was running so bad. i learnt that was an issue because they used an older RPG maker engine though so maybe the newer ones are more stable on mac..?
Thank you so much! :D I'm not sure about MacOS sadly. From what I know, it's supposed to work in theory but I've never tested it myself. I can confirm that Omori was made with RMMZ though so it may not work, unfortunately. :
i'm student in university, i have been working to make game in MV now. actually i used to make in 2019. if i download free trial for MV so its trial for 20 days. if after that i download trial for MZ its that possible i can use it free for next 20 days again ?
Hi, I have recently discovered this engine and I would like to use it to create something of my own. However, not having much money to spend, should I wait for the MZ price to drop further (currently at 30 euros) or should I go with the MV (which costs 10 euros)?
Depends entirely on what you want to do with the engine! Take a good look through all the features that MZ has before making your decision, but MV is a perfectly good engine on its own.
Hello! Please tell me, is it possible to convert a project from RPG Maker 2000 to the new makers MV or MZ? I read on the Internet that the graphics will need to be scaled, but what about the scripts and all the events? Thank you.
Unfortunately the events and scripts from previous makers can't be transferred directly over to MV or MZ, mostly due to the engines using different programming languages. :(
Hi, I'd like to ask a question. Can we open a project in RPG Maker using 2 different device (with different accounts) at the same time? I want to work on a project with my brother and I think our work will become more efficient if we are working on it simultaneously considering both of our accounts have the same RPG Maker version.
Unfortunately you can't both open the same project at the same time and work out of it like that. There are ways that you -can- work on the project together but you have to be very careful not to overwrite each other's work. There are certain parts of the game that will have their own dedicated files though. So for example your brother could make maps while you're working on the database or something, and then you can copy and paste his map files into the project afterwards.
Thank you very much for your videos. I’ve been an rpg fan since the 90s but hate modern graphics, I dream of remaking Azure Dreams and ever since I discovered this program I can’t stop wondering if I should make the jump 😅
There's the RPG Maker official forum where you can post a thread about your game if it's free. There are also RM websites like rpgmaker.net and HBGames where you can upload your game and host a page for it. The best place at the moment for indies aiming to sell their games though is probably itch.io, because it handles the uploads, plus all of the sales and payment processing.
Actually the majority of Yanfly's plugins were ported over to MZ. You can get pretty much everything you need for free in the VisuStella Core plugins, and they also sell a lot of "luxury" plugins for more specific needs. :D
Ohh. MZ have features what I really want. But I already worked on my game more then one year, and if I switch to the MZ, it all gonna start over ((( So i will finish my game first. Couse I spend much love in it, and slove to many problems with her, to just ignore it! But, it is great what when I gonna make sequels or another stories what take place in the same world, I could make them in MZ :> Honestly, MZ looks like very good DLC to mv. (Couse the difference is way smaller then foe exapmle difference between ace and mv.) And if it was a DLC, it would be awsome, and cost all it money :< (Sory for my bad English)
VX Ace is also a really good engine! Depends entirely on what you're looking to do with the engine and whether there are features that would make or break your game, but lots of very amazing games have been made with VX Ace. :D
They have a lot of pros and cons, but yeah they don't fit pixel art games particularly well. They're great for non-artists though because they're way easier to make. Thankfully there was an update to MZ that lets you make MV-style animations now, so you can actually import sheets like you used to be able to. :D
@@tomwalker8944 I can't remember exactly when they patched it but it might have been about a year or so ago? But yeah super cool that they added it in!
For mv you don't have to learn a new language to make an effekseer animation to use in combat, and mz, to my knowledge and experimentation, has worse overall animation control if you want to make something seem simple. This is my opinion and not facts in any way
@Cazwolf Thank you so much, I had doubts before buying it, You explain and sell better the product than the owners of RPG Maker lol (Seriously, go to the Steam Page, With their video I was like "Meh"). Thank you so much
Thank you, that makes me really happy to hear! I actually read through the whole Steam page in order to make this video so I totally get what you mean haha!
So MZ just has more art assets is that really all they did with this? That sound pretty lame especially sense you can only generate characters in Japanese style only! You can't create it in your own or other styles! Which ultimately you would need to import them from else where making MZ totally useless if you ask me! Why can't they just make one engine? and just upgraded or updated that's all I really have to do! I mean unity and godot is still one engine right? And these people been around a lot longer too you think that by now they would have the best engine in town? But no is the same old sht! Over and over and over again! With minor adjustments like a regular update!
If you actually watch the video, you'd learn that it's more than just art assets that makes MZ different. They can't make just one engine and continuously update it because that's not financially sustainable. If you can't afford to buy the newer engines, there's nothing wrong with the older, fully capable engines they've released.
I don't know how you got through 7 minutes of video explaining the difference between MV and MZ and came to that conclusion, but maybe you should try again. :)

Hello, it seems you still read comments so i have a small question
on steam, MV has a better rating while also having more reviews, so i was wondering if there was any downsides to MZ
MV probably has more ratings and reviews because it's been out for longer and has become cheaper over time, but there are no downsides to MZ. It's just a better version of MZ but it's more expensive and doesn't have such a wide array of plugins from the community.
@@Cazwolf all right thanks for the answer :)
I use to use VX Ace but due to the resolution limitations I dropped it despite spending hours using it and spending money on it. At the time I was making a game in 2015 the standard resolution was 1080p. This is extremely difficult to view in full screen and difficult to focus on in windows mode due to the small size.
I only got RPG VXAce because it was on sale. Bought for only $10 when it was originally $70.
I was wondering about buying MV for Switch
I love the explanation, thanks for making this video.
Thank you!
With me, the layers is most diffirence things and most important things also. I can easy create alot of better map with layers.
For someone who doesn't have a lot of money and is just starting should i get Mv as it's currently 17 dollars i think
Yep, absolutely! If you can't afford MZ at the moment, then I can definitely still recommend MV as a solid engine. It's an awesome starting place for new devs and still holds up really well. :D
so they are basically identical... everything there mentioned is either achievable with plugins or work arounds..
I mean besides literally everything mentioned in the video like the new RTP, improvements to the engine's performance, etc. then yeah they're very similar. But they're not identical, no.
So are you gonna make an update for when MZ increase db sizes, and allows for alt tilesize settings. Suppose to come out in the summer.
Yes, hopefully! I'll aim to make a new video when they officially release the update, and possibly show a little tutorial on how to use it as well. :D
I think I'll go with whatever version ends up getting the best JS plugin support. I'm still on VX Ace because my current project needs scripts that are only on that version. If something similar popped up on MZ, I'd move to it even if it would take a ton of work to recreate the game.
I have a question regarding its availability; can it be uploaded on Chromebook? I might be able to put it to use if it could.
What is best for making Animated Sprite movement and can also add CG?
Very random, but if I wanted to make an RPG what would I need to learn. Like which coding language, skills etc ? 😅 thanks in advance
thanks for the video. I'll wait for a price drop for MZ to get it instead of MV
Thank you this helped me a bunch.
i'm student in university, i have been working to make game in MV now. actually i used to make in 2019.
if i download free trial for MV so its trial for 20 days. if after that i download trial for MZ its that possible i can use it free for next 20 days again ?
You can use the trial for MV for 20 days and then get the trial for MZ for 20 days, yes. :D
@@Cazwolf lmao thats smart af actually xD
new user, better to get MZ( i would recommended waiting for RPG maker unite)
@@Cazwolf Whoa thank you for the explanation!
Thanks, this was a really helpful video!
What people constantly fail to mention is that the MZ trial is Windows only...
Thank you very much for your videos.
I’ve been an rpg fan since the 90s but hate modern graphics, I dream of remaking Azure Dreams and ever since I discovered this program I can’t stop wondering if I should make the jump 😅
It goes on sale pretty often and you can get MV quite cheap when it's included in a Humble Bundle, so I'd recommend keeping a look out!
@@Cazwolf thank you so much ❤️
If I bothered to get this and make a game, where would I find people to play it?
There's the RPG Maker official forum where you can post a thread about your game if it's free. There are also RM websites like rpgmaker.net and HBGames where you can upload your game and host a page for it. The best place at the moment for indies aiming to sell their games though is probably itch.io, because it handles the uploads, plus all of the sales and payment processing.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the main problem with MZ is the fact that Yanfly plugins aren't compatible.
Actually the majority of Yanfly's plugins were ported over to MZ. You can get pretty much everything you need for free in the VisuStella Core plugins, and they also sell a lot of "luxury" plugins for more specific needs. :D
@@Cazwolf thanks, this is good to know, considering that I like a lot of MZ features.
Cool tip about free demo! Thx!
np
Thank you so much for the explanation! :D
I think both are great ways ! and have the Strength of each other, keep fight. xD
Is it also possible to deploy games in android from mz just like in mv?
It is! MZ has all the same deployment options as MV does. :D
I just bought both in a bundle, I'm guessing I should refund mv right? Keep the newer one only?
If you're able to refund from a bundle, then sure! Both engines are good but if you haven't used either before, I'd recommend MZ over MV.
@@Cazwolf thank you
Does MZ support multiplatform like MV?
Oops, I missed this comment sorry! Yes, MV and MZ are both multiplatform. :D
my comment got deleted, rpg maker has all purpose engine abilities. believe it!
Ohh. MZ have features what I really want. But I already worked on my game more then one year, and if I switch to the MZ, it all gonna start over (((
So i will finish my game first. Couse I spend much love in it, and slove to many problems with her, to just ignore it! But, it is great what when I gonna make sequels or another stories what take place in the same world, I could make them in MZ :>
Honestly, MZ looks like very good DLC to mv. (Couse the difference is way smaller then foe exapmle difference between ace and mv.) And if it was a DLC, it would be awsome, and cost all it money :<
(Sory for my bad English)
That's the best plan, honestly! It's smart to finish your original project in the current engine, then try out MZ for any sequels or future games. :D
i want to ask if ace VX is good
VX Ace is also a really good engine! Depends entirely on what you're looking to do with the engine and whether there are features that would make or break your game, but lots of very amazing games have been made with VX Ace. :D
The particle effects were the big "pass" flag for me personally as I thought they looked cheap and out of play inside a pixel art style.
They have a lot of pros and cons, but yeah they don't fit pixel art games particularly well. They're great for non-artists though because they're way easier to make. Thankfully there was an update to MZ that lets you make MV-style animations now, so you can actually import sheets like you used to be able to. :D
@@Cazwolf Oh when was this changed? Haven't touched MZ in like.. 2 years maybe?
@@tomwalker8944 I can't remember exactly when they patched it but it might have been about a year or so ago? But yeah super cool that they added it in!
No Linux support for MZ... Bummer!
Thanks you really helpt me. I got all the info i needet. You erand youself a new Subscripion 😁
layers, good.
I really want to upgrade I'm still using rpgmaker2003 hahaha...
2k3 is an amazing engine!
I actually read through the whole Steam page in order to make this video so I totally get what you mean haha!
one of them has a car
The only thing that bugs me about mz is that style of art is worse mv has more pretty.
Hi
Damm it i brought MV before looking this 😢 welp next time i guess 😅
MV's still a great engine and very similar to MZ! What you learn in MV won't be wasted if you do ever upgrade to MZ so don't worry. :D
@@Cazwolf ill wait for a big discount for MZ whenever i get money, im looking up tutorials so i get soon into making stuff, looks good!
I don't kn,I like the mv.
When are we getting rpg maker 3d?
There were actually 3D RPG Maker engines on the PS2! There are also plugins for the latest engines like MZ3D which let you use pseudo-3D.
Honestly I'd love a suite with rudimentary engine with event triggers and mappers with FFIII/IV remake graphics.
@@KasumiRINA Same, that'd would be dope!! I wouldn't mind something like 2.5D though, like Dragon Quest V remake on the Nintendo DS.
thanks android 18!
I thought rpg maker was the game series 😭😭😭😭😭
V and Z
This engines on switch if you were wonderong
So... Nothing.
I don't know how you got through 7 minutes of video explaining the difference between MV and MZ and came to that conclusion, but maybe you should try again. :)
