In the US that machine is called a dust collector. That is a loud machine. I have a 1 1/2HP Jet dust collector with the pleated filter on top and plastic bag underneath which is much quieter. I also had to remove the screen on the inlet due to long planer shavings getting blocked. My plastic bag is not too bad to remove, a big O ring to hold the bag in place. Easier to remove than to fold the bag back over the O ring. If only we had 3 hands..... I have ductwork between the Jet and my wood lathe, table saw and router table, but I have blast gates so only 1 machine connected at a time. My planer is not presently connected due to getting some other machines. Insufficient space for everything to be ducted. I have some of the quick clamps, they do work well. I also have some of the Rockler quick release tapered connections. The separate can with chip extractor works, but consumes a lot of the pressure drop of the system. These machines are high flow, low head (pressure) so pressure drop means reduced flow. As often is the case, there are pros and cons. I installed a Thien style baffle inside my dust collector. This was to minimize the dust in the pleated filter. This is easy to remove, but very messy to clean, so I want to minimize how often I need to clean the pleated filter. Dave.
I like the idea of the chip separator. I had exactly the same problem with my Record dust collector, when I spoke to their service department I was told to cut out that plastic part like you removed. He also said that he hadn’t told me to do it! But it works. Great video as usual.
I got the Charnwood version had it 10 years never a problem. Like you I use a Nilfisk for most of my hand held tools great vac. Not keen on pipework all round the shop for dust extraction. But I have fitted the Rutlands air filter mounted on the ceiling for fine dust in the shop.
I have a similar machine under a different brand and did exactly the same as you, removed the mesh as it clogged up on my thicknesser. I to guess it has voided my warranty but it now does what I want it to do. Its also good for my spindle as well.
I have the Record Power CX2500 with the fine filter (the metal gage with a pleated filter you described) for much the same reasons and it does the job well enough. Having a separate cyclone/drop-box makes a huge difference and given that all of them have crappy bags that take ages to fit I'm surprised there's not a better design out there.
I am so glad you did this video! I have been considering one of these, and I was wondering whether or not it would replace my shop vacs as well. I have heard other people say they don't, but I was not sure. Thanks for clearing that out ;-D
I use mine for everything, 4” hose direct to table saw, planer or jointer, then I use a 4” to 2 1/2” adaptor and connect my shop vac hose for cleanup, and on bench sander, miter saw, then I use my rocker small tool connection kit with my hand sanders and routers, etc...
I wash my cloth filter bag regularly, I just chuck in the washing on a cold wash with a little bit of soap and it comes out snow white and perfectly clean. Doesn't seem to affect the filtration.
@@Badgerworkshop As I mentioned it might be that your bag is a different material. Mine is made from the same stuff they use for filtering oil and fuel, it's quite thick and fluffy, very dense weave. I had nothing to lose when I tried washing it as I had already purchased a big drum type filter for the machine. I gave it a try washing it and it came out great. I now use the filter bag instead of the plastic bag underneath, and I use the drum filter on top. It takes a long time before things get clogged and need cleaning, especially using the cyclone separator.
@@caskwith could you help where can i find latge drum like filters you mentioned please? Just got one (ELU), for six ales(!) so making chips are next. Ps.: Thanks Matt for the video, and for previous ones as well👍. AB
@@attilabori4734 I bought mine from Axminster, I gave them the dimensions I needed and they found something suitable, I then made a simple adapter ring for it. There are companies out that sell them as well.
Thanks for this review. I too have a Metabo planer/thicknesser that I have hooked up to a Bosch GAS35 vac via a 35mm (ish) hose. Whilst the Bosch works well with small power tools, I get chips all over the place when thicknessing with the Metabo. Do you think that the Metabo chip extractor would perform better?
"it's a one trick pony, you switch it on it sucks up chips and that's it" 😆😆hahahaha😆😆 nothing glamorous about this tool! Good review mate. 👍🏽 It does exactly what you want from it, and that's good enough. 👌🏽
Bit off topic sorry . I've watched all your table saw vids , and you've gone through a few . I've looked at the Bosch one but thinking the DeWalt . The metabo one looks alright but in your opinion if you had to choose between all the ones you've had ? . Budget 500 and it won't be used a great deal but want a decent one . What about the evolution rage 5s ?
I found that although the Axminster doesn’t have a full length fence, it’s still sturdy. The dust collection is amazing and the diving knife is easy to adjust. I use it for ripping down hardwoods all the time and have no trouble. I’ll upload some reviews for all the products soon
'switch it on and it sucks up chips' sounds like me on a Friday night! 😂
Sounds a good Friday night to me

I really need to get a fine dust air filter
Good setup Matt. The workshop is looking great really nice set up
Thank you very much

I imagine everyone does the same as it would be unusable

I must get a filter. A separator does make a big difference
Hi! Propeller in the motor is plastic, or metal, please?
I am so glad you did this video! I have been considering one of these, and I was wondering whether or not it would replace my shop vacs as well. I have heard other people say they don't, but I was not sure. Thanks for clearing that out ;-D
Yes unfortunately there is not one machine that can do everything

I would recommend the Axminster craft machine, it’s not extremely loud and has great extraction
thanks man this is review I like, honest! Plus I like your wall color, really !

I think my bag might be a different material though as it's a 1 micron rating.
Interesting. I was told to never wash them

Yes the 100mm hose would work much better
@@Badgerworkshop Thanks Matt, that's good to know before I shell out! All the best.
Hi Matt can you tell me what the difference is between the CMT grooving blades listed in the 'tools I use' section is?
one is 3mm the other 6mm
Does your separator reduce air flow in any way?
It probably does a little
Does a cyclone dust extraction system not do the same thing as this?
It depends what size cyclone you have. My small one would be no good for the planer
Thanks for the info! 😃👍🏻👊🏻

I would probably go for the dewalt as I know lots of people with it and never heard a bad things said about it
Axminster craft tablesaw, I have most of that range and for £500 you get a cast iron machine with an an amazing cut quality and precision
What do you intend to use it for? The Dewalt has the best fence, but changing the riving knife is a hassle. Depends on your needs.

What happened to the Milwaukee table saw???
I sold it

I dont blame you. Loving looking machine.

Looks good too big for my workshop

Please learn to use a DB meter. You just said that your dust extractor is as loud as a jackhammer from 1 meter away :)
Yeah ...... first comment lol
