i cant hear thousand miles the same anymore, all i can here is " Making my way thru the hood, sipping this yak, ninjas bout get blown with the mac, BLEKET KE KE KE"
You should do a separate one for the '90s '80s and 2000s
“Walking on Sunshine” has to be one of the most delightful songs out there, glad to see it here
? You do realise it's not good being on that list?
Love it And Tainted Love
@@DaveMcIroy the material of this list is ranked in an order of scaled up quality, meaning it is good.
@@DaveMcIroy still an ear worm, and has made an impression
@@mikeychrisanthus9948, then a lot of the songs of that list shouldn't be on the list, then no. 1 is wrong. And you didn't get the point.
I can't hear 1,000 miles without thinking about Terry Crews. 😄
"Rainbow Connection" is a song from the 1979 film The Muppet Movie, with music and lyrics written by Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher. The song was performed by Jim Henson - as Kermit the Frog - in the film. Chart peak at # 25; My point is that it's a great hit song that was never followed up by another hit from Kermit.
Kermit killed his own music career. Selling Spanish Flys on the Sesame Street set, 2) His affair with that LA salamander, & 3) The messy divorce from Ms. Piggy were all over the news.
Jim Henson's first charted hit was "Rubber Duckie" by Ernie from Sesame Street, thus, Henson not a one hit wonder. There is also Kermit's signature song, "Bein' Green," which although not a charted hit, after Henson recorded it in 1970, it has since become a standard, having been recorded by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Lene Horne, and Van Morrison among the dozens of other artists.
Is rainbow connection a pop song though?
@@MovieGuy. How is it NOT?
It’s too bad MTV doesn’t play actual music videos anymore 🤦🏻♂️
UA-cam has replaced MTV sadly. I mean, internet killed the television video star. BTW MTV Classic plays videos, dude.
Yeah.
@@karlc2869 facts bro.
@@sameeknowsitall Yup.
Actually they do now. Mostly in 1 hour blocks lifted strait from the programs as they ran in the 80s and 90s as far as I can tell. I find it quite addictive still. It's great background
I have my DVR recording Total Request Live so I can start it up anytime
Blinded by the Light is one of my favorite songs from the '70s, and I love it when the radio station actually plays the full length version
They had another Top 40 hit called "The Runner" in the 80's.
Quinn the Eskimo rocks.
Got 4 of their albums, hardly a one hit wonder
Best album is nightingales and bombers
Written by The Boss… Bruce Springsteen. Hardly a one hit wonder.
I always liked Ordinary Day as much as A Thousand Miles. For me, she was more than a one-hit wonder.
Also pretty baby is nostalgic
Also White Houses, hands on me… and so many more are great songs.
I also saw her live opening for Stevie Nicks. It was awesome.
Vanessa Carlton continues to make excellent music to this day. May not have the chart results but anyone that listens will be rewarded. She's a great musician!
Vanessa is currently on tour with Stevie Nicks.
Same. I don't exactly consider her a one hit wonder.
@@DaveCM she is though
I will have forever associate the song a Thousand Miles with the movie White Chicks and Terry Crews
How did you know?
I love this song!!
😂😂😂
Kim Carnes had 3 top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits:
- "Don't Fall In Love With a Dreamer", a duet with Kenny Rogers that hit #4
- "More Love", a remake of the Smokey Robinson hit from 1967, which went to #10
- "Betty Davis Eyes", which was #1 for 9 weeks in '81
As well, she had two #15 hits, "Crazy In the Night", and a duet with Barbara Streisand, "What About Me"; as well as other singles that made the top 40.
While she is best known for one song, she is most definitely not a "one hit wonder".
Yeah, she really doesn't belong on this list.
I agree, and there were other examples too. They tend to play fast and loose with the term one hit wonder. What's the point if you can't stick with the title.
I was looking to see if anyone would comment on this. I also enjoyed "Invisible Hands" "Draw of the Cards" and "Voyeur" How many one hit Wonders got to sing a solo part on "We Are The World"?
but Kenny Rogers had a boat ton of hits
Check the definition in Websters.
Kim Carnes definitely applies. The narrator even acknowledges her other hits, but as per the definition she is known primarily for Bette Davis Eyes
Hanson, Simple Minds, Men Without Hats, same Story.
Under the strictest interpretation of a one hit wonder( must have only one hit), then The Grateful Dead are a one hit Wonder as “ Touch of Grey “ was the only one that charted.
No ones ever going to say that TGD are a OHW.
The definition is that they are generally known for one song, or the popularity of one of their songs overshadows all the others.
If You say Simple Minds, the first song that pops into your head is “Don’t You”
It’s not “Alive and Kicking”
"She's Like The Wind" by Patrick Swayze from the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack. Made it to #3 in the US and the top 10 in Norway, Canada, Ireland and a few other countries. He was a big actor but that was his only radio hit.
The true definition of "One Hit Wonder" is an act that had one charted hit and then disappeared. While Swayze did only chart with one song, he didn't disappear from the public. After "Dirty Dancing," he acted/performed music in "Roadhouse." The album charted and produced some Rock hits (mainly for the Jeff Healey Band)m but Swayze's track "Raising Heaven (In Hell Tonight)" was released as a single and did recieve some radio airplay, though, technically it did not chart nationally,
@@anthonydaniel1727 But he did not make more music, therefore it is a one hit wonder.
@@anthonydaniel1727 “One Hit Wonder” - one hit in the music world and that’s it. Doesn’t matter what else he’s famous for. If someone is famous for giving someone a BJ would that mean they aren’t a one hit wonder?
@@someoneyoudontknow7705 the current method for tabulating charts is much different from the old days, but I worked in the music business back in the day, and Swayze's single "Raising Heaven (In Hell tonight)" off the "Roadhouse" soundtrack had respectable sales [back when people acturally had to go to a music store to make their purchase) and charted on playlist in many radio station markets (I used to read all the Trades). This past week's Billboard Top 100 contains every track from the new Taylor Swift and Drake albums, whereas in the old days instead of digital downloads one would have had to purchase the album. The Swayze single was listed as a double-sided hit with the B side, "Hoochie Coochie Man" by the Jeff Healey Band in some markets - though more Rock radio play than Pop. But, if it's listed as a hit, than it's a hit. Also, please keep your vulgarity to yourself.
I like that #1 was the only one to have two hits - cuz I still remember "Ordinary Day" even if no one else wants to acknowledge it.
she actually had 3 hits "A Thousand Miles" , "Ordinary Day" & "Pretty Baby"
before fading away...... and re-appearing with a new album in 2007, only to quickly fade away again.....
White Houses on 2nd was great
@@chrismeulen8108 She had a fourth hit, collaborating with Counting Crows doing a cover of "Big Yellow Taxi."
“Ordinary Day” was great, but only hit 30. By that standard, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band also had 2, because “Runner” hit 22.
@@traydonovan4819 Yes. I had the album "Somewhere In Afrika" by Manfred Man's Earth Band.
"Making Our Dreams Come True" is a 1976 hit single, recorded by Cyndi Grecc,; it was used as the theme song to the 1976-83 television sitcom "Laverne & Shirley" - Chart peaked was from # 13 to # 25 depending on which chart you look at. My point is that it's a great hit song that was never followed up by Cyndi.
John Sebastian: "Welcome Back" from the TV show "Welcome Back Kotter" the show that launched John Travolta
Joey Scarbury: Theme from "Greatest American Hero" TV show
Nice flag fuck yard, you should get your 4th booster!! 😂😂😂
"Laverne & Shirley" was a spinoff of "Happy Days", whose theme song of the same name became Pratt & McLain's only hit song.
One hit more than many of us will ever have 🙂
That means we are only half way there
Oh hey look it’s my Spotify playlist.
New Radicals had another great song called “Someday We’ll Know” which is definitely another nostalgic song for me
That's my karaoke song too
When I first heard the New Radicals song on the radio I thought it was the Rolling Stones.
here we go again, WATCHMOJO making me smile like if i am 15 again in 1995, but also reminding i am a middle aged GEN-X who wish i can wake up tmw and find out i am back in the good old 90s....best era ever, epic sad.
Very surprised you didn't include Baltimora - Tarzan Boy, that shit is iconic and a true one hit wonder
I can't believe Luchasaurus turned again, man lol
Great song. Always brings back good 80s nostalgia.
Tarzan Boy is awesome. What a great one-hit wonder. I also remember when it got re-released in 1993.
@@gamernaut8864 Though it's always sad that the singer, Jimmy McShane is no longer with us.
I grew up with 90s to early 2000s hits being popular in junior high and high school, and I thought of Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping", Baha Men's "Who Let the Dogs Out", LFO's "Summer Girls", Lou Bega's "Mambo No. 5", Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta" and Meredith Brooks "Bitch" are some that I thought of, off top of my head. Smash Mouth's "All Star" can be a one-hit wonder, but that's the only one known single off their albums, though they did have a good song for Shrek soundtracks with "I'm a Believer".
I still think of "Walkin' on the Sun" when I think of Smashmouth personally. They didn't have a particularly large amount of output, but enough to prevent the from being on a list like this. Most of those others are justified though. Personally, "Mambo No. 5" is one of the happiest tracks I've ever heard, but "Baby Keep Smiling" on the same album is even more infectious.
When I was in middle school, Somebody That I Used to Know was the only song that I would listen too!😁🎶
He actual from my neck of the woods, Mornington Peninsula
Have you heard ‘Not the Star Wars that I used to know’?
Trevor Horn (singer in the Buggles) went on to become a producer for a heap of other artists such as ABC, Francis Goes To Hollywood, Dollar, Seal. Very talented man!
*Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
@@davidcopson5800 Thank you, yes damn auto 🥕!
Trevor Horn co-wrote the song with Bruce Woolley....Woolley's band, The Camera Club (which included Thomas Dolby on keyboards), released their version of the song in June of 1979, three months before the Buggles did.
@@pizzaman191 Great info. Thank you for not blinding me with science.
The Buggles (Trevor Horn & Geoff Downes) joined Yes for one album "Drama" replacing Jon Anderson & Rick Wakeman. Very underrated album.
Vanessa Carlton isn’t a one-hit just because this is the song everyone knows. She’s had multiple radio hits
Though I don't know her or her songs!
Nope... I only know Thousand Miles...
Great subject. Great list. More one hit wonders in different genres/eras please.
Incredible nostalgia from this video. So awesome!
Yes
How Bizarre! By OMC(Ultair Millionaires Club) from the 90's. Great song!
Yeah, one of my favourites. RIP
A modern twist on Video Killed the Radio Star would be "Streaming Killed the Physical Star".
Ain't that the truth.
And also Internet Killed the Television and Radio Star.
Ahhhh grew up in 80s & 90s remembered all these songs use to rock to it in school & college ..good ole days & youth was ..that was those days & decads music was real music ..not garbage these days
'70s and early '00s too. BTW mainstream music went awful after 2003 ended. Thanks, dude.
So many good songs. What about Nena’s 99 Luftballoons?
My favorite one-hit wonder is Alannaah Miles' Black Velvet.
Love that song !
God I love that song and that voice
Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day” always hits me in the feels

@matt lol 😂
Opus -Live is Life is a one-hit wonder 1985
"Let's Go All the Way" by Sly Fox and "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc. needed to be somewhere on this list.
Pseudo Echo's only US Top 40 hit was their version of "Funkytown"
in 1987. That same album had a song that you may remember called "Living In Dream".
Lipps Inc. actually charted 11 singles, and Sly Fox had 3 charted songs
Towelie used Funkytown to remember a pass code in a South Park episode - hilarious 😂
Great call on "Let's Go All The Way". It seems like the industry doesn't want to remember this awesome 80s hit about nuclear war. Love that song.
Soft Cell may not have had a significant hit beyond Tainted Love on the international charts, they did have 12 Top 40 hits in the UK and 4 top 20 albums. They're just another case of a group that appealed more to fellow Brits then Americans, outside of the their one international hit.
Soft Cell did a good cover of Tainted Love. I also enjoy the sung by Gloria Jones from the 60s.
"A Thousand Miles" is the most popular song for the Critter community. How many times have the cast sang, "Makin' my way..." when someone says that they make their way somewhere?
"Afternoon Delight" (1976)
🎸 Starland Vocal Band
King Harvest "Dancing In The Moonlight"
Starbuck- "Moonlight Feels Right"
Wonderful list 🙂
Yes 👍
I guess you're only talking about songs that are known in the US, I imagine by these choices. Natalie Imbruglia had another hits like "Big Mistake", "Smoke", "Wishing I Was There", "Shiver" and "Wrong Impression" in Europe, Australia and Latin America. Including a UK #1 album after that. Also, Natalie's most recent album Firebird is amazing, you should check it out!
I actually find it offensive they but Natalie Imbruglia on a one hit wonder list.
Even though the list is not the most comprehensive, it's certain to make you revisit some of those great songs. Nostalgia undoubtly kicked in!
There's so many 1 hit wonders out there that it would be hard to create a comprehensive list that's still short enough to sit through.
A more accurate name for this is "A random list of One Hit Wonders plus the biggest hits by Kim Carnes and Manfred Mann". There are soooo many one hit wonders and none of them are Kim Carnes or Manfred Mann. By the way, one of the biggest hits of all time is "You Light Up My Life" by Debbie Boone. She never had another US top forty hit. Didn't even make the also rans on this list.,
Great comment. This video is about as satisfying as trying to dry yourself with a plastic bath towel.
Well, those are great one-hit pop songs. But I have to choose my top ten songs, it'll be this:
1. Kim Carnes "Bettie Davis Eyes"
2. New Radicals "You Only Get What You Give"
3. Vanessa Carlton "A Thousand Miles"
4. The Remembrants "I'll Be There For You"
5. Bobby McFerren "Don't Worry, Be Happy"
6. The La-La's "There She Goes"
7. Soft Cell "Tainted Love"
8. Dexy's Midnight Runners "Come On Eileen"
9. Haddaway "What Is Love?"
10. Rockwell "Somebody's Watching Me"
Signs by Five Man Electrical Band. They had a few other hits here in their native Canada, including a couple under their previous name of The Staccatos, but internationally Signs was it. I still get that song stuck in my head occasionally.
Canada: also had a good song called Absolutely Right. Probably better...
@@tomreedyjr3631 I'm a Stranger Here was good too, but neither one was a significant hit outside of Canada.
“Bette Davis Eyes” was such a colossal hit it’s amazing that Kim Carnes didn’t have another top hit song. A couple more honorable mentions: “What’s up?” by 4 Non Blondes and “Hooked on a Feeling” by Blue Swede, a seventies classic, made popular again 40 years later in "Guardians of the Galaxy."
Blue Swede wasn't a one hit wonder. Their follow-up single to "Hooked on a Feeling" was "Never My Love", which hit the Top 10, peaking at #9.
And yes, Kim Carnes did have other hit songs.
Wasn't "Hooked on a Feeling" more associated with REO Speedwagon and David Hasselhoff?
@@SmallSpoonBrigade I wouldn't go that far. The song was originally sung by B.J. Thomas and has been covered numerous times since. Jonathon King covered it in 1971, adding the ooga-chaka to it that Blue Swede used in their cover of the song. Blue Swede's version of the song was the biggest selling record of all the artists that have covered it
Let It Whip by Dazz Band and Paid in Full by Eric B. and Rakim should be here.
Fun fact - 'What's up?' was sung as a karaoke by Wolfgang and the ensemble in 'Sense8'.
Vanessa Carlton's "Ordinary Day" was a bad ass song. I actually saw members of Mastodon dancing to it in an Applebee's years ago.
You forgot pac man fever, lovefool, barbie girl, and the safety dance

I just click the video and I already sing along with Bad day!
Big Country by Big Country.
The running joke back in high school was: What’s worse than sweat on Pat Benetar? Come on Eileen.
We had a singer in Australia called Billy Field, who had a hit with his song Bad Habits. So the joke here was what was worse than one of Billy Field's Bad Habits? Come on Eileen.
If there is a common thread with all these songs it's that they are all common movie soundtrack songs.
One hit wonder songs seem to have more of an earworm quality than the ave hit song form a established or soon to be established artist.
The buggles will always have a special place in my heart. Music appreciation class in college my professor asked “for 200 extra credit points what was the very first music video to play on MTV?” No one knew but my nerdy self 😂😂😂 didn’t even have to take my finals that year 😂😂
I would like to add "I get Knocked Down" by Chumbawamba (sp?) as an excellent one hit wonder.
Oh Danny Boy, your spelling is correct.
It’s called Tubthumping
The Friends theme is not a one hit wonder for The Rembrandts. They had "That's Just The Way It Is Baby" in 1991.
Some others :)
Teenage Dirtbag - Weatus
Stacey's Mom - Fountains of Wayne
Move your feet - Junior Senior
Tipsy - J-Kwon
Let Me Love You - Mario
I can't listen to 1000 miles with straight face without thinking of Terry Crews Singing In White Chicks. 🤣🤣🤣

A classic song
Vanessa should have had more hits. I thought she was great back in the day!
she was not a one hit wonder. her first album was great and had 3 big tracks
Ordinary Day and Pretty Baby were hits, I'm so confused why she's on here.
@@vesbarrow Agreed. Ordinary Day was a great song.

came here to see Tainted Love, Come on Eileen, and Ice, Ice Baby made the list. I guess Vanilla Ice technically had another hit song (possibly Play that funky music white boy). At least two of the three made the cut
This is a pop list. Vanilla ice doesn’t belong here
You Get What You Give is without a doubt the anthem of the late 1990s.
I remember it!
Got a new lease of life when it was used by Mitsubishi (I think) for an ad, two years after the band had split up.
I thought of one that you guys forgot. How about 500 miles I’m gonna be by The Proclaimers? As far as I know, that was the only hit they had over here.
Even tho they were such a crap band, they did have more than one hit
Oh dear lad . An over 30 year career , selling out huge venues , a hit musical and you say they're a one hit wonder? Numpty.
@@sb6678 Your lack of taste is obvious .
WatchMojo apparently still doesn't know what a One Hit Wonder is. Closer, but still not there.
""O-o-h Child" by Five Stairsteps in 1970. Chart peak # 4 [Cash Box] or #8 [Hot 100]. My point is that it's a great hit song that was never followed up by another hit from Five Stairsteps.
Do some research..."O-o-h Child" was the 16th charted single for The Five Stairsteps (often called the "First Family Of Soul," which they followed up with 4 more hits before morphing into and changing musical direction (from Soul to Disco) as The Invisible Man's Band with 1 charted single, and then lead singer Keni Burke went solo and had 2 additional hits.
That song later covered by Dino in the '90s, dude.
Vanessa Carlton 's music is so good she's more than the song everyone knows her for
"The Game Of Love" with her and Santana. Great song!

Should definitely do a top 20 cause some of the honorable mentions I’d take over the ones on the list
I'm baffled you've never included Your Woman by White Town in your one hit wonder videos. That's a really good one hit wonder that I really like.
Tainted Love is always a big hit, and Gary N. "Cars". Definitely overplayed Goyte and the remake.
I would have had "Return of the Mack" by Mark Morrison in there somewhere
Backstreet- no diggety
Ohhh snap new video
This is cool !!!!
Our Last Night did a rock cover of Vaness Carlton's "A Thousand Miles"...It is GREAT!!! She really is a talent!!😎
I was expecting Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" to be #1. It usually tops these kinds of lists.
What about Modern English "I Melt With You?"
What you forgot to mention was the fact that the Buggles more or less merged into Yes. And all of these years later, are still in the Yes universe, Geoff Downes is the keyboardist and Trevor Horn produced some of their best work.
The local pop station played "Torn" to death SO BADLY that I STILL cannot stand it. At its worst I remember counting THREE PLAYS in ONE HOUR.
I have to agree with you. Played to death.
This was actually a surprisingly good list of one hit wonders songs. Which one is your favorite out of the list? Mine is Blinded by the light, shot out to Dexys Come out Eileen as well.
Dean Friedman wrote and recorded “Ariel” in 1977; chart peak at # 26. My point is that it's a great hit song that was never followed up by a hit from Dean.
I said "hi," she said "yeah, I guess I am"
Friedman charted with 5 songs
MJanfred Mann is everything but a One Hit Wonder!!!
"Mighty Quinn", "Do wah Diddy", "Ha ha said the clown", "father of day father of night", You angel you" were great hits!!!

Very true.
I predicted in 2012 that Carly Rae Jensen would be a one hit wonder with her hit Call me Maybe.( she did have a follow up with Good time , a duet with Owl City)
and both artist are somewhat one hit wonders. How about Magic! with their song "Rude" or "Shut up and Dance" by Walk the Moon? I havent heard from them since
Jepsen is not a one hit wonder, I really like you and Beach house really trended
When MTV stopped showing videos, "Video killed the radio star" should have been the last video they showed. Then went off the air.
Kind of weird that your number one one hit wonder had multiple number one hits
Soft Cell had a massive hit with Say Hello Wave Goodbye!!
They certainly did. I was standing at the door of the Pink Flamingo when I first heard it.

Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! Latrell Spencer also likes "A Thousand Miles". 🤣
It's amazing to think how good most of these tunes are.
For any of them that created them themselves, what the hell happened? I get it when they're just puppets and someone else created it all for them. But why could these artists come up with this level of song and never come close to repeating it?
New radicals were a 2 hit wonder. SoMeday we’ll know is fantastic
Maybe you've been brainwashed too is an amazing album too
So we're excluding "Take On Me" because we're saying they had other "hits?" I mean, like you said, Dexy's Midnight Runners had another #1, so I'm not certain where the "line" is.
This is likely based on the Billboard Magazine's Top 40. A-Ha had 2 U.S. Top 40 hits. The other song was "The Sun Always Shines On TV" which ranked at #20.
