For a decade now, i get people tell me im so wrong for feeding my dogs only once a day (and making their own food instead of buying regular dog food). Well My dogs are much older then everyone elses, and all super healthy and active. My sister, my friend, my ex all got the same breed actually the dogs are siblings 3 years apart. They are all obese, skin issues, missing teeth, while my dogs are living their best life.

That's how we approach ours. I appreciate that dog breeds have evolved differently based on their relationship with humans but the fact of the matter is that they'd be lucky to eat everyday and if they did, it would be scavenged bits and bats here and there. In reality they'd probably get one hearty meal every 2 or 3 days. That's what their bodies are designed to tolerate/expect

My pittie girl lived to 15-1/2 and would have made it another two if she hadn’t gotten osteosarcoma. I cooked her meals like this every evening since shortly after I adopted her because of her profound allergies. It only took 30 minutes and I’d talk to her while she watched me work.

String beans blueberries ground lamb or beef and sometimes chicken because he gets the runs with chicken sadly. 15 is a long time. She knew how much you loved her for sure. You gave her a beautiful life ♥️. We lost our Lilly in 2019 she was a small dog and she was almost 13. I still am heartbroken over it I have to admit 🥲.

I was advised by a Zoologist that you should feed your dog as much as they will eat in a 20 minute time period once a day. I’ve used that method for over 20 years and all of my GSDs have lived over 12 years except one who fell to a hemangio sarcoma.

About a month or so ago, I was having many issues with my frenchie. She was not eating her two meals a day. Vomiting was something kind "normal" for her. We already fed her natural food (not raw) since she was a puppy (she is now 5 years). She also has IBD.
After watching this video I tried 1 meal a day and oh my god what a difference it has been in her life. Yes, the first day she barfed but that was it. Second day was life as usual. She is more energetic than ever and is eating every little drop of food she can find.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I really appreciate.

Yup, we feed our Corgis in the AM, 1/2 hard boiled egg, 2 Tbsp of kefir and a handful of organic blueberries. Then 5-6 hrs later, they get their one meal a day. We don't use any kibble but cook up ground beef or turkey or chicken and add in some Farmer's Dog with my homemade bone broth. We have started adding in a tsp of Brewer's Yeast to discourage fleas from jumping on the dogs. LOL! It works and it's good for them.

My Cockapoo cleans his plate of raw food every morning. He was 2 last week. He has 125grams first thing, he's so excited when its breakfast time. Then we go for a run over the fields, he has another 125 grams when we get home. That's his main meal of the day. During the wintertime when he was getting less exercise he was putting on more weight rather than staying stable, so I cut him back to one plate of 125gram and reduced the amount of training treats he receives. He soon returned to his 11.6 kilo's and with the weather improved somewhat he is getting more exercise again. People forget that treats are for training purposes. I often see overweight dogs and they're usually dogs that are fed kibble and never go for a run off of the lead. My dog loves to run off the lead that is the best treat of the day for him. Our bodies weren't made to eat processed foods and nor were our dogs.

Believe it or not, my dog CHOSE to eat one meal a day. I used to always give her breakfast and dinner but she would never touch her breakfast and just gobble down her dinner. So now, I simply give her a raw meaty bone/frozen stuffed trachea around 11am and some enrichment game with treats at 2pm, then feed her daily allowance at 7:30pm. Not only has she been eager to eat again, she is also thriving with this diet - no more turning her nose up on food, no more refusing to eat.

oh! well i'm not an idiot then because both my dogs only want to eat once a day at night so I've just gone with that but my vet told me it was wrong and told me to feed them twice a day which my dogs actually don't want. They both want to eat last thing about 7-8pm. I was told it's bad for them to eat so late but they don't want food until that time. I'm feeling that the advice my vet gives always goes against what my dogs actually want to do naturally. And yes, they both hate kibble which is also what my vet advised so that's why I'm here because I am so confused about what the heck I'm supposed to feed my dog at this point and when I should do it.

I just put my 17 year old Chihuahua to sleep last week. For her last year she was on a strict hospital diet of hydrolyzed chicken livers and pea protein; very low fat. I fed her every 3-4 hours, as she ate very small meals, and would vomit stomach acid if left without food too long. So I was getting up twice a night to feed her as well. You do what the dog needs, and learn to take your cues from their behavior. Good luck with your puppy - I hope you have many happy years together.

I have a toy poodle and will not advise one meal daily for a toy breed like your dog, as the risk of hypoglycemia is high. My dog also self-regulates which is common among poodles, he will eat what he needs and leave the rest, some days he finishes his food other days He does not.

Plus my cats join in on the carcass. When I don't have deer, I get liver, beef and chicken gizzard from the grocer , plus I add one of my own chickens eggs each every day for vitamins and minerals. So what about large dog breads like the Great Dane that are susceptible to GDV (bloat). It is advised NOT to feed one large meal a day to these breeds as it can be detrimental to their health and contribute to GDV. It is advised to split their meals into smaller portions.
If you give your dog 600g of food a day split over 3 meals instead of one this will not make your dog obese. They are still only eating the same calories and nutrition just split up. The only thing that will cause obesity it overfeeding and lack of exercise. I have always fed my adult dogs smaller meals either 2 or 3 times a day. Never once had an obese dog.
Are you going to start telling people to go back to their caveman diets and way of eating because its more natural? Most dog breeds today have never lived in the wild, for example the Chihuahua, French bulldog or a Pug wouldn't last 5 minutes in the wild. Hi, I have a small mixed breed Maltipoo dog (going to be 2 yrs old next month) who's not a big fan eating in the morning. She used to, though. I had to put down and pick up her food bowl and try to give it to her again at 10am. Still, she either eats them a little bit or not at all. She has GI issues (would vomit the white foam if her tummy's empty too long and too often). So I'd give her a small treat at noon. But in the evening between 6.30pm - 7pm, she would finish eating her normal meal. So my question, is it ok if she eats once a day and what time should I be feeding her if it is ok for her to have one meal a day. Other than her being picky eater (yup, guilty. she trained me good *sigh*)..and also her common GI issued, she's a healthy, playful, active dog. I'm so used to feeding her twice a day..so I do get stressed if she doesn't eat the first meal in the morning which I normally give her between 8-9am.

Hi, as much i appreciate the information you put across. Everything you say makes complete sense. What if you have a reactive dog that you are in the process of training?
For example, my dog is reactive and we switched from raw to cold press as its difficult to train with raw, not only this but the one meal a day goes out the window here as i am just feeding his meal throughout the day to positively reinforce the behaviours I want.
I think what im trying to ask is if not feeding raw, is there any other kibble/cold pressed or freeze dried youd recommend?
Also, is it so detrimental that they must have the one meal a day all at once? Surely trickling throughout the day to positively reinforce behaviours isnt a bad thing?
I look forward to your response, I want the best for my dog and appreciate that is what you are trying to provide people with.

The problem using food to train is the constant feeding keeps spiking insulin which causes hyperinsulinemia, which leads to the desensitization of the cells to glucose, which leads to type 2 diabetes. I train without treats, by just using praise as a reward. If you are being a good leader, they want to please you, and praise is great confirmation that they are doing just that. Alpha dog doesn't give treats to his subordinates. You get a place in the pack and a good relationship in return.

I have an 8 year old 6lb Yorkie who is on 3 meals a day. Feeding her once per day, I believe, would be feeding too much at one time. I tried twice per day once and she would vomit it back up because of the amount of food she had to consume at once. I recently transitioned her off of Hill's prescription that she has been on for two years, so I might try twice a day with this new food. I'm still experimenting with her new food to get the right amount to maintain her current weight but right now she gets 6 tables spoons of her food plus 2 ounces of protein per day. If she would eat all of this at one setting I feel her tiny stomach couldn't hold this much?
I also add 4-6 teaspoons of warm water to each feeding since she is not a big water drinker. She has had problems in the past of being dehydrated but since I have been adding water to her food, she stays hydrated. So if she would eat all of this at once, she would be eating the 6 tablespoons of food, plus 2 ounces of protein, and 18 ounces of water. @@thedognutritionist
