    I absolutely love the inclusion of D3O foam in the CCM goalie equipment. I've talked about it in both the Premiers and my newest Extreme Flex III pads; never once have I gotten a stinger in the glove or blocker, and the same goes for shots to the D3O foam in the chest and arms and new pants. Can't get enough of it. Thanks for the great video!

    • @BallisticFaceGuy
      @BallisticFaceGuy 7 років тому

      It wouldn't have hurt whether he was or wasn't aiming for it. It was a small metal piece with not a lot of heft to it. If you hit your knuckle dead on, it would probably hurt, but in the meat of the hand it would maybe become a little sore at most. This gel material, which is a non-Newtonian fluid, dampened what little damage could have been done by stiffening up on contact with this guy's quick hammering motions on it. This isn't really remarkable at all, as it's basically like silly putty, another non-Newtonian fluid that is probably a fraction of the cost.

    • @Spender604
      @Spender604 7 років тому +33

      The problem with concussions is that they usually come from rotational forces of the skull making the brain bounce around. No matter how much shock absorption you have in your helmet, you can't mitigate that.

    • @ohainickify
      @ohainickify 7 років тому +14

      Spender604 bingo. The solution to preventing concussions and brain injuries would be to take the D30 gel, and have a layer of it between your brain and the inside of your skull. CCM isnt the only company who uses this stuff in their products either - Tech21 makes cell phone cases with D30 inside them.

    It's just a non-newtonian fluid. There's actually significant testing of this stuff for motorcyclists, showing that it has little to no use for motorcycle armor. Maybe for playing games it might be better because you aren't taking huge impacts at 200 kph or whatever. Also the huge difference is the finished foam you have there, that's NOT a non-newtonian fluid anymore. SO you're being shown a NNF and it's amazing abilities, but it IS NOT what is in the armor. It's a bad gimmick, for unscientific people.

      it is in fact a non Newtonian fluid. it does not follow Newton's laws of physics. you can literally make that with corn starch and water if I remember correctly so unless they figured out a way to keep it under enough pressure to stay in place under fabric there's no way that puck is made the same stuff. not to mention the puck doesn't resemble the substance either not behave like it. the only way that "oobleck"maintains a shape is if it's constantly being shaped or is put in a mold then cooled to the point of stiffening up and even then I believe when it thaws it softens again. so unless you can prove that that puck is made of that fluid then it's just a sad gimmick. prove and you will forever no you're right if you don't you'll forever be a fool.

      Imagine fibres or cells with a flexible outer, that contain the fluid.
      You then take thousands of those miniature fibres or cells and form them into any shape using a mould.

    Theirs a popular shoe insole in skateboarding called footprint insoles. They're great and reminded me of this. They do an egg drop test comparing it to remind insoles and other brands I can't think of plus the stock insole and footprint always saves the egg while the others don't. You should try it out it'd make for a great test, comparison, and video

    can it stop a bullet ??

    • @angeldemore6922
      @angeldemore6922 6 років тому

      i wouldn't count on it.. maybe if they made a specific version for such insane velocities ? I would think the bullet would cause it to shatter like when he pulls it apart.. Thing about teh impact of the hammer or any concussion is it will be spread out over an area on initial hit almost never a stab or pointed hit.. and if it where on this material, it would typically be a very shallow point making the material resist it and work, if it where a needle or knife safe to say it'd pierce it..
      Its not magic... just simple physics.. its an amazing material but clearly doesnt defy physics.. or does anything insane like stop a bullet im sure.. I'd assume this material can only be rated to a certain impact level, which sharply decreases as a single point is more focused than dilated across the surface.

    • @Japed
      @Japed 6 років тому +2

      It's a non-newtonian fluid. It stops blunt objects, not sharp ones. It most definitely wouldn't ricochet a bullet either. The bullet will go straight through the putty, and leave the putty in pieces. If you want to see how that would look, multiple people have shot balloons full of oobleck, the easiest and cheapest non-newtonian fluid to obtain. This D3O stuff might be more tensile, but it's still not going to stop a bullet. Just as everything that claims to be bulletproof fails to do as well.

    • @Giraffiti
      @Giraffiti 6 років тому

      Jape, even so, D3O can only withstand up to a certain velocity.

    • @kald0rei
      @kald0rei 6 років тому

      You can see how it snaps apart when he pulled it apart. A bullet with its high load would be able to fracture the material and pass through.

I fell on my left knee first and I didn't even felt it ... believe me it was really hard crash when it broke my ankle badly ...

    Heres the thing about that, if its hard it hurts when you get hit. It may absorb a lot of shock but most foam is soft so it takes a lot of the shock in and than your body can do the rest without much pain
