  • Drum Tech/Drummer Kenny Sharretts goes in depth to discuss "6 Ways To Tune A 13 Inch Snare Drum" using the awesome Tama 13" x 7" G-Maple Snare Drum. Learn to create the KICK ASS SOUND YOU WANT from your 13" snare drum.
    This video takes you on a step by step journey to show you how to use 3 tuning intervals (half step, Perfect 4th, and Perfect 5th) at a super low tension, and again at a medium tension. Great for those searching for alternative ways to tune this 13" snare to fit all styles of music.
    This is an AMAZING drum y'all. After teching one of these snares nightly for John Roberts on 2 tours w/ Janet Jackson I'm stoked to have it in my collection. Check it out at Sweetwater Music, and thank you as shopping via this link helps to support my channel.

      @@KennySharretts Yay for that! :) It is my pleasure man. ( And again, Thank You! ) Actually just found out about your tuning lessons yesterday. I recently went a little bananaballz and grabbed a few snare drums, one an LM402, a Peace brand 12 Lug steel piccolo and a 'from bare-shell' project 14 x 5.5 I completely built up myself. (went with a set up similar to the super sensitive as far as the snares.. ). But it would be great to schedule something in the near future, if you're still doing that. Especially as I (and everyone else) is mostly still stuck in a hopefully spore-free cage. For sure drop a line! and a pleasure to meet u. Cheers Kenny! jesse :)

      @@KennySharretts Heya!! Excellent ~Thank You!!! Will do. As soon as I get a bead on when my roommates will be out of the line of sonic fire, I will Hit U UP! Thanks again man. Looking forward to it as well :) Cheers! jess :) ( My 5.5 I mentioned.. which with either a Diplomat, or a Studio X made for floor toms, has this odd Overall 'Low G' deep ring to it. As I glassed the inside of the shell as an experiment to brighten it up, I ended up running three, 1" inner rings of 1/16" boron ( a kind of soft rubber ) around the interior to try and dry it up a bit. When we chat I will show you what's goin' on with that particular beeotch. ;) Interesting beastie for sure. ;) Cheers again!! Lol

    Hi Kenny, I’ve had this snare for about 5 years. I’ve bought and sold many others along the way and the 13” G-Maple is still my favorite. Have you tried any other snare wires on it? I’m finding that the custom pro 24 strand creates too much sympathetic buzz no matter how I tune the snare. The stock wires are much less buzzy but I don’t like the overall sound as much. I've been thinking about doing a video like this because anytime I try to teach someone how to tune a drum they tell me all about how they been playing for 50 years. Usually it's not near my drums for them to hear but it always turns into me having to listen to some seriously bullshit sounding drums all night. I think doing a video would be a little easier to get a point across without the "well I've been"... Cool videos Kenny, not a lot of people even understand tuning to this extent and most people that do, don't want to share so I appreciate what you got going on. Talking all about it.

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  4 роки тому +1

      Wizzle duuuuude! I can’t believe I missed a comment from you. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ Agreed on the “Ive been doing it for . . . Years” deal, but one thing I’ve learned from that statement keeps me thinking straight as a tech. It’s not about me, it’s about the drummer. I can tune em great all day long. If the player isn’t digging it? I suck 🤣🤣🤣 Thats when I try to take my theories/knowledge to find the best option for good tuning while giving the drummer what they like. That being said one of the main reasons I started this channel was for the exact reason you stated. Sick of dropping in a club, and having to hear awful sounding drums. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I’m reaching out y’all 🤣🤣🤣 Come to the good!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻Thx as always for commenting my friend.

      This I understand. Depending on what you want from the drum try
      1. Using smaller turns as you tune down to explore the “medium tuning” range of the drum. I just released a vid discussing this topic using a 13” snare.
      2. Try a thicker head. I have an HD Dry on my 12” snare I use for acoustic gigs. I have it tuned low w/ 2 moon gels on it. Sounds like Motown central, with non rim shot stick strokes. Same when I use Pro Mark Hot Rods or Broom Sticks.

    One question: do you think it is necessary to have exact equal tension on each lug, kinda like tapping the sides and getting equal pitch note from each side? I’ve seen a lot of people do that but seems like you didn’t do that and still sounded really good.

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  3 роки тому +1

      Lol I always use that method to balance a head, but once balanced when I use the two key method the tension rods stay relatively balanced going up or down in tuning. Hey Kenny your videos are a blast to watch and you’re a great educator! Just curious, how would a 13”x7” drum compare to say a 14x5 or even a 15x4?? How do width and depth affect the sound of a snare drum in particular? Thanks you rock!!!

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  7 днів тому

      To me it’s the spread of the “sound”, and the “beef” of the tone. A 7” x 13” will tend to be tighter in sound at any tension than say a 4” x 15” , BUT the depth might give it a bit beefier tone. Thank you so much for the kind words, and for watching.

    • @KennySharretts

      Alas I don't have the DD reading for that session as I just recently started marking DD settings down for my viewers who use the tool. I didn't even have one of them when I shot this video. I always tune my drums by hand/ear. Now I have a DD to take settings for the viewers so they can get a great sound too. I will say if it's the perfect 5th at C/G you speak of it is a C4/G4 if that helps. The next time I whip the drum out, I'll try to check those settings. Thanks for watching, and commenting.

      2 ply would sound great. So either an Emp or G2 should do. I will say having a touch off tone control with an inlay ring or a dot on a single ply is also awesome for those who like an open tone such as a Genera coated, a Power Center Reverse Dot (Evans) or a Controlled Sound coated (Remo) should sound epic on this snare. What does Tonic mean? A German like I am only uses Gin to go along with it. And I am still not sure what's the first step of changing heads. Some say you need to put all heads to a real high tension, then loosen it up and start tuning it. Isn't the same effect when just tuning it and then press on the head and then fine tuning it or does the very high tension have another effect I am not thinking of? Love your videos man. Short, funny, informative.

    • @KennySharretts
      @KennySharretts  3 роки тому +1

      Thx for watching, and commenting. I use the term “tonic” to refer to the root note of the key of the song, or the in this case the root note of the interval i’m using. For example if i’m tuning a drum to a major third using C as my root note C is tonic and E is a major third above it. As far as the stretch goes some say it doesn’t make a difference to do the high tension where as I KNOW it does. Watch my 2 vids “head change, and the perfect 4th”. I guess I don't see a point in browsing or selecting a video to watch on a specific topic because regardless of what you pick, you're watching some show about a guy trying to be funny selling soap.

      Lol nothing being sold here brother. I use what I wish as I wish. I bought this snare after teching one on tour. Looooove it! So I figured since it was a popular snare from Tama I’d show some tunings. Love that drum. Thx for watching.
