  • HOW TO PICK AN AAU TEAM!
With the competitive landscape in high school basketball, both boys and girls, and the increasing difficulty for athletes to get recruited or even athletes being overlooked. One of the hardest decisions that a high school athlete and their family have to make is picking the right AAU program.
Please review these 5 tips on picking a program. (Bonus Tip at The End)
    1. Success of the Program-look at the success of the program, both sponsored sneaker teams and non-sponsored teams. Look at the success of them placing athletes to the collegiate level from the División 1-Divison 3 Levels , or even JUCO.
    2. EVENTS- what events will your program be going into. College Coaches have a lot of different outlets to recruit athletes. Playing in the wrong events can hurt Athletes in the recruitment process.
    3. Roster and Playing Style- Understanding who is on the team and how many minutes you can play is Important. You need to be on the court and playing not sitting on the bench. Understanding the playing style is important because if you do not fit the style you not be able to show your game.
    4. Coaching- When considering coaching for this team, it's vital to assess the coach's track record. Has the coach helped athletes advance to higher levels of play? Understanding the coach's playing style is crucial, as it directly impacts the team's approach to the game. Additionally, evaluating the type of athletes the coach typically works with provides insight into how well they may fit into the team dynamics and style of play. This aspect is particularly significant for high school basketball players aiming for recruitment, as coaching can significantly influence their development and exposure to collegiate opportunities. Over the years, I've witnessed the impact of effective coaching firsthand, observing coaches who excel in preparing their teams for success at both the high school and collegiate levels. It's evident when a coach has instilled discipline, strategy, and organization within their team, leading to competitive performances on the court. While coaches play a crucial role in player development, it's essential to recognize that athletes must also dedicate themselves to additional training and improvement to maximize their potential for success.
    5. Talk Alumni, Current Players & Parents I always advise our athletes and their families to engage in conversations with alumni, current players, and parents who have been involved with the program. By doing so, you can gain valuable insights into their experiences and perspectives. Alumni discussions, in particular, are crucial as they shed light on the program's history and reputation. Over the years, I've observed athletes who failed to engage in this process, resulting in missed opportunities and dissatisfaction with their experience. By actively seeking input from past and present participants, you can make more informed decisions and enhance your overall journey."
Bonus Tips: Here's a crucial tip: if you do not like your team or the program you're in, the next few months can feel like a drag. It's essential to genuinely enjoy the company of your teammates and feel aligned with the program's culture. While some may advise toughing it out, finding the right fit can significantly impact your recruitment journey. Take the time to assess the team dynamics, coach-player interactions, and overall atmosphere. Choosing the right program can Jump start your recruitment process and set you on the path to success. Remember, the right environment can make all the difference in your athletic journey.
