Counter-Strike’s Civil War: Was Source Really THAT Bad? | OverExplained
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 лис 2019
- What if Valve threw a party, and nobody came? What if they made a new game, hyped it up, and a lot of people decided that it sucked?
And what if it became a dark stain on the company’s legacy - one referred to equally with derision and sadness? No, we’re not talking about Artifact - we’re talking about Counter-Strike’s bastard son...

@@mysty0 Source was meant to be a sequel to 1.6 but people still played it a lot and they coexisted instead of source being the only one so you can consider it a failure
This only pertains to the "competitive" side of CS, which wasn't as big as it is now. I played a lot of CSS and during that time, I probably couldn't name one pro team or player. I put all my hours into minigames/zombies/surf/jailbreak and, to me, that's where the game really shined.
Yeah. Customized sandbox is what source is all about. The reason Gmod is still alive.
CS may not have been as big in 2005 as today based on pure player numbers and prize pools, but in terms of esports market share it had a much bigger slice of the pie. CS was the undisputed king of esports in the early/mid 00s. The only game that even came close to CS was the korean starcraft scene. CS:S was a travesty that fractured the competitive CS community and set it back 5 years, allowing other games to supplant it in the late 2000s like LoL and dota.
@@Kreege Halo 2 on console had a pretty large esports scene and had a good prize pool for the time. A $200,000 prize pool in 2006 was a huge deal. If you were just a PC gamer, you might not have known how big H2 really was... And it was actually broadcasted on national television.
it was a lot of fun
I had over 8000 hours of CS:S from like when i was 11 until i was 16. There was a big Competitive scene (ESL Gathers), with custom servers, custom matchmaking etc. It was fun to play, but nobody WANTED to play it because community servers and funservers were simply ... don't know how to phrase it, it was more fun. Its like comparing Pubg to Gmod. 1.6 and GO is like Pubg where all that counts is to win, and Gmod is like hell gonna have the best time of your life.

@@lambups covert weapons of cs go for free thanks to modders too, we don't need to spend a single penny for their "cosmetic" on cs go lol
1.6 is for men. CS source is for kids, that's why CSS is a bad CS game.
-CSS movement was so bad compared to 1.6, no double duck peeking, no ladder tricks to get to advantages places (e.g tuscan ladder) etc. 1.6 movement is so much more fluid compared to CSS
-Much reduced wallbanging compared to 1.6 so it has a much lower skill ceiling
-CS Deagle is overpowered as hell, amazing running accuracy and low recoil
-No ammo buying so less economy management
-No grenade damage going though walls so all your nade damage is blocked by small props
-Dumb awp quickscope accuracy nerfs
-Dumb barrels on dust2 etc that block movement when people shoot them e.g long a house doorwat
-Huge hitboxes
-Cluttered maps, not clean and simple like 1.6
I'm not a fan of CSGO either but CSS is just an awful game.

Cs 1.6 scene kids were saying the same thing about CS:GO they did about source. then it started making money and they changed their tune.
CS:GO was even worse than Source for about the first year after it was released and was dead on arrival with only 20k daily peak players. It wasn't until the summer of 2013 when the developers finally started listening to the pro players feedback and implementing improvements to the game to make it feel more similar to 1.6 that csgo finally took off.
Uh no. We never changed our tune. Many just quit outright. There's very few 1.6ers left competing. And there's no support for playing 1.6 competitively anymore. Its not eve about the money. I agree, source movement is by far the best and less clunky in any FPS. I hated getting tagged in 1.6 and especially GO because it would ruin the natural flow of the game and limit my abilities to really make plays with good movement.

Source is still my favourite CS.
Mine too CSGOs hit detection is bad in css when you hit someone you hit not like csgo where sometimes the game just says na it didn't
@@oofingbergmaybe it's because the source's hitboxes is much bigger than player model. That's why I can constantly score headshots on source while suck at GO
@@xpk0228 well, GO has this random time that most of your shot just when through player's head.
The one thing I always liked about source for some reason, was the graphics. I think it looks better than csgo personally. Has a really nice style imo.
Dabbing Cadaver Agreed. The maps were so vivid and the guns (besides being left handed) look way more like their real life versions.
I feel this video is pretty biased. Should've included some Source players takes on the subject imo. Personally my favorite CS is Source Pre-2010 OrangeBox, an update which made it run/look worse and added useless shit like achievements, and honestly don't think CS:GO really has anything on Source except money from skins. Also I believe Source has a arguably smoother feel where CS:GO has a clunky feeling in comparison. The peaking becoming more viable in Source(as said in the video) rather than cs1.6 just makes aggressive play more viable and is a preference of play style. The point of saying the Source deagle is over powered makes little sense to me(unlike the aug/krieg)(unlike CT pistal1shotVSglock2shot) both teams always had access to deagle, so saying its overpowered doesn't make sense(overpowered over what?) the ak was still one shot at further distance, ak>deagle(and only T's could buy ak). And insulting Source/players by calling it "straight casual trash" doesn't really mean anything except furthering your belief without adding another reasonable point. ANYWAY I don't think Cs1.6 or Source are trash but I think its trashy how Valve managed to resell CS a third time where its borderline exactly the same game as Source while cs1.6 -> css was a huge overhaul in terms of engine graphics physics etc. As a Source player, CS:GO just feels like a reskinned worse Source that's also used as a gambling ad/front. JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION AND TAKE sorry for ramble & much love❤️
agreed ,i played source for 8 years and CSGO to me is a downgrade in so many ways....you really have to have had a lot of experience with CS source to know the specifics of why it was and still is a better game than CSGO.... experience that this video creator clearly did not have. There is a reason why most source players didn't switch to CSGO.... even when their was financial incentive.... they cant stand its inferior mechanics.
haha very nice fart
@huhuhu he is live on twitch as well a lot :)
I can't play CS:GO after playing Source, the movement and gameplay is so bad compared to it.
The movements of the source were wonderful, and the playstyle was much nicer. In csgo you see people killing you running (nosense). I loved that game so much.

No it wasn't. The most important things in a shooter are good hitboxes and they sucked.
@@3n3rgy90 Hitboxes were fine after the game got patched. Also there is much more to what makes a good experience than just that, and CSGO lacks a lot of what CSS had mechanically the game feels shallow.
@@anab0lic Disagree with you on that, just takes a long time to master them. GO mechanics are all about precision flicking and tracking, minor adjustments. Once you build up a feel for the mechanics, it's very rewarding.

You get the point.
nope, global just got big because of skins, it didn't attract people for its gameplay. Many ex pro players of CS myself included think CSGO its the worst thing that happened to counterstrike.
@@anab0lic Just because skins made CSGO a lot more popular doesn't mean the game isn't competitive. On launch the game was terrible but modern day CS is hard to fault from a competitive standpoint, the SG being the only thing that comes to mind as of late.
@@ThatSteemBloke The point is though its skins that made the community grow NOT its gameplay.... if you have to bribe people to play with a gimmick like that...what does that say about where its lacking in other areas? Each CS release is an animal of its own. Wish the community felt the same way instead playing favorites. Source was underrated.
Loved CSS, graphics were amazing for 2004
Valve went crazy with physics as part of the new Source engine in Half Life and showcased it in CS Source while also making some less than inspired choice when it comes to movement. Basically they littered the main maps with props that obstructed movement and introduced randomness (barrels, small trash that makes you rise in height and screws the crosshair position, etc.) and added the "slow down" mechanic when moving, that is when you stopped the player avatar didn't and moved with momentum a tiny bit which made the crosshair settle a bit later making you miss shots, this didn't exist prior and made for less precise gameplay. People who say it was easier are lying, it was easier to get good in 1.6
I played source for 1 year first then introduced to 1.6 thanks to 2 of my friends laptop unable to run source. And I have to say there is something different about 1.6. It is special. It gives the same feel of aoe2 or gta vice city or COD modernwarfare 1. Though these games are old, they are just special.

Definitely worth the few bucks I spent on it as a kid in 2006
Such an ignorant statement. CSS was actually pretty OK, and in many ways even more fun than CS.

Funny thing is that Condition Zero fixed a lot of 1.6 balance and exploits and is technically superior... it just released too late and unfinished... could have been a good alternative if it released before 1.6 (CZ was in development long before 1.6 released and was meant to be the retail version, instead it was stripped down and became 1.6 -> CZ became something else)

There wasnt ranked system or skins, people just played cs source for competition and enjoyment. Even i remember when i played fast mixes and actually know some people by names/nicknames, there was some kinda atmosphere. Eh
This stupid war was probably the explanation on why Valve never imported all the official 1.6 maps to CSS and pretty much dumped the game after the release of cs_militia in early 2006 or 2007. That's why I never bought CSGO : I didn't want to pay twice for roughly the same game.
And what about CSPromod, the source mod made by 1.6 purists who claimed that CSS needed to much ressources to run smoothly on computers ? They remade the same empty and ugly maps from 1.6 into source but, if I remember well, the mod was full of glitches and dumped too.

Source was an abomination of the original Counter-Strike, there's no comparison at all. The engine alone makes the difference. Source engine is and will never be as good as the Half-Life engine, the netcode in the Half-Life engine was from Quake. New netcode is Valve trash, because they don't care about people with good/fast internet, they only care about allowing people with shit connections (100+ ping) have a better experience than someone with 10ms, because that opens up to more potential buyers and users of your product.
Totally and it makes sense that source players became best at CSGO because it is more source than 1.6
The source engine is the best and still used to this day.
