Thing is, if everyone refuses the scalpers prices, they are out of pocket, and then they have to sell for a reasonable price. Really Dave Mustaine should have put a one item per customer limit on it if he wanted to be fair. Because ultimately what this scalper has done is rob Dave Mustaine of money he could have earned for them, and made it unlikely that any artists will be sell for their fans ever again.
@@EssexRecordingStudios it’s definitely more than 3 Keith, I know at least a dozen people who think you’re a piece of shit, remember the Jackson WR1 absinthe frost you sold, the Purple Les Paul Reissue, The Graffiti Yellow B7 you bought how many people you do you think were happy after doing business, I’ve met no one. It’s a shame because the SMP you have from Joss looks great but I’m worried you’ll be hiding other shit like you did from last time.
I was looking at Dave Mustaine's guitars on Reverb the other day and I came across one of these posts and I thought, "Wow the person selling this must have really paid out the nose when they bought this from Dave" but this is really sad to see, that they would just mark the prices up so damned high.
Man I'm glad someone else is addressing this. I see this stuff on a lot of just normal discontinued gear. I remember the rick and Morty pocket operators being sold for twice the price. The special anniversary boss ds1 pedals as well. But I always find it absurd. It's not just high end gear. I remember a while back there were about 4 or 5 Tom Delonge fender strats on ebay. They were all under $1000 or so. They all sold the same day. Next day a new listing for one for $2200. And someone actually bought it. The most nauseating disgusting part of it is. I payed 600 for mine. And thought i overpaid at the time. It was in worse shape than mine as well. Good video though man. Take care!
I think its just a sign of the times in general. It is so insane with computer GPUs right now. Last gen stuff is going for almost the same as current gen.
This also happened with the Chase Bliss Ayahuasca. It’s unfortunate that it prompted the guy behind the pedals to say he would never do limited runs again, but these gougers are just the worst.
I had a George Lynch owned JMP-1 with his presets still on it, bought directly from george. Was actually cheaper than most listed JMP1s. Artist linkage has almost nothing to do with price of an item.
I got a bunch of 412 cabinets from queensryche and they were free ! I had the truck to go pick em up so I got like 8 or 10 of them ! It was all of them they were giving away free .
Scalpers are even hitting brands like Strandberg, who have relatively low production as is. I don't mind hitting up the secondary market, but companies should do more to ensure end users and reliable dealers get gear first. Also: if that rack mount gear was owned by Revves Gabrels, it's definitely valuable to some fan.
A similar thing happened with the Adam Jones 1979(?)silverburst LP re-issue, only Gibson started them at around $13K. They hadn't even been played by him! They quickly went up to ridiculous prices on Reverb.

I liked that after purchasing and putting them back up in his description is like (Paraphrasing) "Yeah the pandemic hit so I need to sell them off to fund my recording studio." Cool dude, Good luck.
Agreed on the point about the Bowie tour piece. I had a pickguard hand wired by Kent Armstrong. After many years playing things needed replacing and I neglected the instrument because I thought it had an added value attached. The instrument eventually did the opposite of what it was meant to do and made me sad. This year I brought it to a luthier in Cork, and completely rewired it and he actually put in more suitable pots and it plays better. More "valuable" to me now.
The bigger the lie the more it seems plausible. This is the concept scalpers apply along with their belief there is a "sucker born every minute". Good on you for exposing these gear scalpers.
i remember when behringer discontinued their super fuzz clone for a very short time and that was being sold on reverb for over £100 i remember seeing...for a £20 plastic pedal...behringer soon put it back into production to stop this
One of my dream basses is a David ellefson signature Jackson CBXM-V. The five string with maple neck, the one that looks more like a fender than a Jackson. I went onto reverb hoping to find it used for maybe $600-750USD. I saw someone sell a stage played model for $5,500USD. That’s a little more than 6 times it’s original value of $850USD. I get that it’s stage played and signed, but I would expect it to be double or even triple the value. The price it was being sold was the same as his USA custom shop basses, for one made in Indonesia.
Blame Reverb for not having a system in place that prevents one person from buying up all limited edition merch like that. This is as much a publicity stunt for reverb as anything
in other words "legal doesn't mean ethical" I guess....on the other hand though, thats a brilliant move if there are people willing to pay that kind of money....although I highly doubt that there are that many, so wealthy megadeth fans out there so eventually prices will come down to more reasonable levels....
I had to watch this. I recently went looking for a LTD JH200 because I had to part with it about 10 years ago (long story 😢). When I saw how much they are going for now... I had to tell myself to forget about it.
@@EssexRecordingStudios really classy dude, are you so insecure about how you’ve ripped off and lied to your customers that you have to be here at 2am in the morning?
There really ought to be a law against it… or at least something in Reverb’s T&Cs where you can’t purchase something from reverb and then sell it for more than 10x the price within say 5 years of the initial purchase.
Edit: would love to see if anyone who's been to essex recording studios actually got to play the guitars or if the "it's to help musicians" thing was just bullshit... Like prices increasing because a guitar was PLAYED by an actual celebrity or whatever fair enough, but if you have something tons of wires are going into that isn't unique to the celebrity you can't expect to sell it for more than it's worth... like i compare things to cars because it makes it easier... buying the car that someone has drove would probably have increased value over lets say "Oh this here tyre was used on a celebrities car" Like the way i see it Amps and stuff like that even though they aren't consumables often get replaced every so often that it wouldn't have any special value other than a cool conversation piece. Like when you buy memorabilia it's expensive but it's not outlandishly expensive and 9/10 the memoribilia is unusable in normal life however an amp you would expect to want to use unlike lets say the glass mel gibson drank out of in the original mad max lol!
Completely true, I work at a guitar store and we had a new old stock EVH limited edition wah (1000 units) and we sold it a month after Eddie's passing for 199€, less than the street price
I was lucky a few years ago and picked up a used (new condition) USA Peavey EVH Wolfgang, red Flame top, birds eye neck and fretboard, original case too. Absolutely gorgeous and I think I could profit at least $1000 USD. To sell it is knowing I'll never get my hands on something like this ever. It stays safe in its case in my climate controlled room. I will say it's probably the nicest guitar I own, rarest for sure, given the condition.
If you're not in the States or the west at least, scalping can be worse. I'm in Korea and not near any of the sort-of black market western shops. An acquaintance wrote how they had bad headaches and were trying to find excedrin migraine. On gmarket, which is like Amazon if they only had individual sellers, 24-packs were equivalent of 75-80 USD. On Amazon, 300-packs were $20-25.
Exactly this. And despite what KDH might have to say about it, Trogly doesn't get a pass. There were 245 that hit the market. At least 4 of them went through his hands. He's currently listing one of them for about twice what they retailed for and his own listing describes it as looking like it was gouged with a metal pick.
The best antidote I ever found for GASsing over “mojo” pedals was learning to build pedals myself. You start to learn that guitarists seem to believe in magic. None of this is magic. If it can be done, it can be done. There’s no reason to spend crazy money on an overdrive. These things are simple and repeatable. Spending insane amounts on gear just doesn’t make sense to me. Sure there are features you might want or aesthetics you might want, of course all that comes with a price. But this isn’t supernatural phenomena. This has made me skeptical of paying crazy prices for studio gear as well (after having done that a few times), and my skepticism has been vindicated a number of times.
meh. it's business. all power to him if he takes the initiative. everything else is sour grapes on everyone else's part. it's different if tragedy or death is involved, that shouldn't be profited on.
Everybody fuckin' hates Essex Recording Studio's / Keith. He's been hated in the ESP & Jackson communities for years. We tried to get him banned from Reverb multiple times, but since he's not technically violating Reverb's policies, they can't do anything.
The cycle of reselling on Reverb is terrible right now. I check Reverb for various items several times a day (you have to if you want a good deal) and over the past 2 years I have seen more and more of items with a good price being sold within a hour of being listed and then being relisted within days (or sometimes relisted with the original seller's pictures) for a big mark up. There is a well known UA-cam guy who does this and sometimes will buy brand new instruments and then re-sell them after doing his video (where he takes them apart, etc.) for a couple hundred more than they are new. Some instruments you can follow bouncing from reseller to reseller and going up in price each time, never reaching the hands of a musician.
Still mad I didn't get the Generation Loss from Cooper FX and Chase Bliss. Could have gotten it for $350, and a year and a half later and they are $1000.
As grim as this is, the moment a celebrity dies, scalpers will always jump on anything related to that celebrity. BUT, that is not the worst problem. The worst problem is how when a celebrity dies, overnight, we will have loads of obvious fakes looking to scam fans who want to snatch up anything related to their idol. Case in point, a month after EVH died, I found a counterfeit "EVH-owned Marshall" on Reverb. I doubt many would know what to look for, but, thankfully, I know. 1: Those memorial plaques were obviously glued on. Those inscriptions were NOT engraved onto the actual amp itself. 2: Those memorial plaques say they were presented to EHV in 1985. The serial number starts with Y, which means the amp was made in 1990. 3: The serial number also says S/A, which means it is a 50W, while the product ID sticker says 100W. So, the name plate does not match the serial number, and the amp itself was built 5 YEARS AFTER THEY CLAIM IT WAS PRESENTED TO EVH, not to mention the plaques are GLUED-ON. This thing is an obvious fake, and not even a GOOD fake. And this fake was made entirely to take advantage of grieving EVH fans. There are two lessons to be learned here. The first lesson learned is education will go a long way. If you do know what to look for, you can avoid getting scammed by fakes. The second lesson learned here is those of us who do know what to look for need to be active, maybe even proactive in finding fakes, so we can protect those who DON'T know what to look for, so we can prevent them from getting scammed by fakes.
Totally stumbled across this. Bro, I'm with you. This is ridiculous. Dave started music talk on the interweb...please tell me he saw this video. Ok. I'll go through the comments now
Same thing happened for the first release of the PS5. For scalping I have two main concerns, wth is wrong with the people overinflating the price and what is wrong with the people who think it's ok to spend the money on scalped items. Another thing I find kinda unreasonable, imo, is the +pricing on gear that has been owned by someone famous and the obsession for vintage gear as well. I will never understand these people
@@matteoziegler7632 XD Oh yeah, I forgot about that, my bad. The talent transfers from Mustaine to the guitar and then to the new owner through osmosis :p Just how, how could I have not thought about that. Thank you very much for opening my mind
Vintage gear snobs are the worst. Fluff once did a video showing some jackass on reverb trying to sell some old box for a chunk of change because a vintage amplifier or something came out of it.
Just don't think of it as guitar gear. It's a celebrity owned item, which makes it a rare collectible for fans. People pay for autographs! Of course they are going to pay for a guitar used on tour, a lot.
2:46 Music shop that buys guitar and sell them back with a higher margin add a value to the item. They check if the instrument is properly working (set up, truss rod), the refference them well (Identifying pickups in a Gibson for exemple). So when you buy from a reputable shop you pay a guarantee that the item you buy is as decribed and you have a real support. I think it's far better to pay 20% more for a guitar and be sure it's perfectly working when you're buying one guitar than taking the risk to get scam and get in a lot of hassle to get your money back. But that's personal prefference after all :)
Go to Fluff channel guitarsandbeard i think . In the series about Reverb ads #3 there is a stage pic where lana del rey guitarist actually plays the amp
I used to be interested in a PS5 and a GTX30xx vid card, but since it's too much of a hassle to get one, and if I try to buy an available item, it's way over MSRP, fuck that shit! I'd rather go find the scalpers and scalp them.
@KDH I have a signature Dave Mustaine Marshall, they only made 10 in the world, I was wondering if you were interested in documenting it. Thank you, Jason
Guys it's only a ripoff if the deal is not what it's advertised as. I, and most people in the used metal gear game are aware of this. Some people have the money believe it or not and will pay crazy prices...if it's what they want. This is a non video
It’s funny, I’d not even think about selling my AOD lefty. It plays really well. And for a left handed guitarist, who has to buy all his gear sight unseen, a well playing guitar you keep.... Also, if you’ve ever met David Mustaine, you’d know what a nice guy he is. My wife and i have done four or five meet and greets, as well as had side stage access at a Mayhem festival, and his family sat next to us. Great folks... really down to earth. Like you’d expect from metalheads....
Gibson just bought Mesa/Boogie so get ready for some serious/professional/authentic scalping...The JP2C was already around 3-4k (deservedly if you ask me) but NOW it will go to 10k for sure.....And it will have 1/2 the QC needed...
Cba scalping is going on for their non limited production pedals like MOOD blooper and the automatones also (MOOD is consistently above 400 on reverb for the past couple months, blooper above 600) there are dealers who ship fast for msrp tho
the pedal makers made a big mistake by announcing limited runs. Now sports card makers are manufacturing demand for cards by employing the "magic the gathering" business model of limiting production of specific cards and then manipulating the market into demanding them. The backlash and the price crash are both inevitable. When manufacturers create rarity they are enabling this market.
The one that really pissed me off is the Boss/Sola Sound TB-2W! It was a limited run that sold for something like $350. People were buying 5, sometimes more, and then selling them for $1500 each! Its ridiculous!!!
Hey just had guitar center try too sell me an Ltd for 1250.00 mustaine when i was looking for a Dean 😆 it was bashed up and I've owned 100s of his signature guitars including Jackson!!! I ended up gettin a New Jackson King v mg Pro instead for better price which is not normally the opposite
One thing you forgot to mention is demand and supply. If the demand is high (meaning everybody wants a piece of gear) and the supply is low (maybe manufactor can't keep up with the units they produce each day, or it's a discontinued piece of gear) prices naturally go higher. The market is always going to be like that. In my opinion, the guy who bought Mustaine guitars made a smart investment move. Whoever bought them, they will eventually go on sale for a lot higher in price, exactly following how demand and supply is supposed to control the price
I dont like scalping but why is it ok to buy a guitar for $2000 and quadruple the price but somehow not ok to buy a pedal for $400 and then sell it for $500? Even the higher price ranges mentioned in the video aren't close to the triple or quadruple range which you said is somewhat acceptable.

Scalpers when a legendary guitarist dies: YES!! WOO HOO I FINALLY GET TO SELL THEIR SIGNATURE PEDAL FOR 700x THE ORIGINAL PRICE GET IN
It can't be both? Same when someone like Picasso died. It was sad that a great artist had passed, but if you owned a Picasso I can see feeling zero guilt in feeling good that its value rose.
@@notthebannerboys Actually most Picasso's are worth shit. You can get some originals for under 1000 bucks. Some a few years ago were going under 200 bucks.
Good ol Essex Guitar Studios, a yankee in the UK.

The same thing is going on with a lot of BC Rich guitars, especially ironbirds...my god, a cheap, bolt on ironbird is going for the price of a professional-made jackson
Essex guitar studio's prices are mental. They have a jackson KE3 for 500 quid, I got mine for 315 from a local shop
5 years ago, here in the states, you couldnt sell one of those for over 200 bucks (148 gbp). Same goes for all of those Japanese Professional Series guitars. Now they're all double that, or more.
I've gotten all my ESP 4 knob Eclipses for around $800-1200, he's selling his at retail or above and is calling them rare... THEY'RE ALL OVER EU lol.. He's a liar, fraud and a scammer. He even expects you to be your very own pro guitar tech as they come as is, meaning, if they're unplayable when they get it, you get an unplayable guitar. LOL!
All of us hate ESR with a passion
All 3 of you 🤣🤣🤣
@@EssexRecordingStudios it’s definitely more than 3 Keith, I know at least a dozen people who think you’re a piece of shit, remember the Jackson WR1 absinthe frost you sold, the Purple Les Paul Reissue, The Graffiti Yellow B7 you bought how many people you do you think were happy after doing business, I’ve met no one.
It's literally cheaper to hire a thief then pay the prices. Sad.
Take care!
Those guitars are going over 2K now. The Squires are hitting 1K. I dont get it...
I think its just a sign of the times in general. It is so insane with computer GPUs right now. Last gen stuff is going for almost the same as current gen.
Ever heard "Sign of the Times" by Bob James? Great smooth jazz kind of track.

7:12 - 28.5276 times Dave’s asking price of $75. Just so we all know.

Can you explain to an idiot like myself - what stops the manufacturers from being the scalpers themselves?
Dave Mustaine played it really well with pricing. Slash and Gibson on the other hand...
Ironic the Dave joined Gibson, so..
Its funny that I knew instanty who you were talking about even when I did not know he had bought all daves' guitars.
It's downright anti-consumer.
Like prices increasing because a guitar was PLAYED by an actual celebrity or whatever fair enough, but if you have something tons of wires are going into that isn't unique to the celebrity you can't expect to sell it for more than it's worth... like i compare things to cars because it makes it easier... buying the car that someone has drove would probably have increased value over lets say "Oh this here tyre was used on a celebrities car"
Like the way i see it Amps and stuff like that even though they aren't consumables often get replaced every so often that it wouldn't have any special value other than a cool conversation piece.
Like when you buy memorabilia it's expensive but it's not outlandishly expensive and 9/10 the memoribilia is unusable in normal life however an amp you would expect to want to use unlike lets say the glass mel gibson drank out of in the original mad max lol!
Damn, and I just subscribed to the Essex youtube channel thinking "hmm, this is a lot of really cool gear"...whoops!

I bought a cherry red Charvel 291 for €300. The Essex Recording studio had the same guitar listed for a €1,200 or 1,300.
People scalping for a discontinued Rickenbacker solid body that was 900$ to 1500$ for up to 1900$ and 2500$
What’s really stupid about the EVH things when Eddie died, you could still buy some of them new.... for less
Adam Jones' guitars got me like:
Yup
Haha, love the Trogly s/o. Great video!
Everybody fuckin' hates Essex Recording Studio's / Keith. He's been hated in the ESP & Jackson communities for years. We tried to get him banned from Reverb multiple times, but since he's not technically violating Reverb's policies, they can't do anything.
I'm quite surprised, maybe even impressed, by Mustaine's prices.
4:46 given you're Irish I wonder if the guitar player was Gerry Leonard. Hope to see you playing in Dublin post covid man.
I see a new KDH video- I watch!

Still mad I didn't get the Generation Loss from Cooper FX and Chase Bliss. Could have gotten it for $350, and a year and a half later and they are $1000.
If someone is prepared to grossly overpay for a guitar, why should I be angry about that?
You should try send this video to Dave. I say he would be pissed if he saw what being done with his legacy.
Bro, 2 years later and I still see them for sale on reverb
Dave should not of sold them all to that guy ... he should of spread the love and made sure they was going to different people.
it was reverb he cannot control it like that
I find it also funny that people are selling things that don't appreciate in value, i.e., Axe-Fx, for more than the manufacturer's list price new.
cool, you have a lawsuit model Ibanezx. Havent seen one of those in ages. Really good guitars.
I just discovered your channel. Your videos are awesome! Subscribed.
KDH wanted that banjo
The second lesson learned here is those of us who do know what to look for need to be active, maybe even proactive in finding fakes, so we can protect those who DON'T know what to look for, so we can prevent them from getting scammed by fakes.
i find this to be the same thing with the Randall RG100ES because they were used by Dimebag Darrell.

Trogly is scalper too.
I will never understand these people
Bro you dont get it if i get mustaines guitar i can clone him and finally get good guitar lessons
@@matteoziegler7632 XD
Oh yeah, I forgot about that, my bad.
The talent transfers from Mustaine to the guitar and then to the new owner through osmosis :p
Just how, how could I have not thought about that. Thank you very much for opening my mind
It's like 200 year old firearms owners and "patina" it's rust and you just paid x amount of money for an unusable firearm corroding away to dust.
Vintage gear snobs are the worst. Fluff once did a video showing some jackass on reverb trying to sell some old box for a chunk of change because a vintage amplifier or something came out of it.
I’d expect prices like that for ‘Deth stuff from the 80’s and 90’s. This is just ridiculous
Just don't think of it as guitar gear. It's a celebrity owned item, which makes it a rare collectible for fans. People pay for autographs! Of course they are going to pay for a guitar used on tour, a lot.
Same stuff went on when Neil Peart sadly passed.
Dave is great player but didn't listen to his music. I think that was cool of him
2:46 Music shop that buys guitar and sell them back with a higher margin add a value to the item.

Guys it's only a ripoff if the deal is not what it's advertised as. I, and most people in the used metal gear game are aware of this. Some people have the money believe it or not and will pay crazy prices...if it's what they want. This is a non video
Indeed
Personally, I wouldn't hold the guy responsible. Don't hate the player, hate the game. 😉
That LP styles guitar is beautiful
You sound salty
Yup. Extra salty with a side of salt
Wow. That was a dick move. But, damn, Dave really gave some kickass prices on those axes.
Cba scalping is going on for their non limited production pedals like MOOD blooper and the automatones also
(MOOD is consistently above 400 on reverb for the past couple months, blooper above 600) there are dealers who ship fast for msrp tho
the pedal makers made a big mistake by announcing limited runs.
The pedal movie isn't out yet is it?
Whoever bought them, they will eventually go on sale for a lot higher in price, exactly following how demand and supply is supposed to control the price
supply and demand is another HUGE LIE y'all fell for.
ex:
huuuuge demand for AFFORDABLE HOUSING ..... = NO AFFORDABLE HOUSING.
The game is RIGGED.
@@jonbongjovi1869 great example dude, keep it up
I dont like scalping but why is it ok to buy a guitar for $2000 and quadruple the price but somehow not ok to buy a pedal for $400 and then sell it for $500? Even the higher price ranges mentioned in the video aren't close to the triple or quadruple range which you said is somewhat acceptable.
Because 25% on top is completely different to 400% on top dude. It's fairly obvious.
