    I've watched this video like 100 times trying to learn this clean and slow and it blows my mind how clean and fast and dynamic you play it Rick.
    Also I have this in 0.25x speed to hear everything super detailed and I heard him say "extreeeeeeeeeeeemmeeeeeely" LOL

    With no intention of starting a lengthy and senseless argument over names used for various picking techniques I think your picking technique is a variation of economy picking called 'Directional picking'. That is if I understand correctly how you apply inside picking when switching strings. The number one "rule" of 'Directional picking' is when moving between strings, upon reaching the next string, the note is picked in whichever direction the pick is moving.

    • @DillonBerkley
      @DillonBerkley 6 років тому

      No doubt. Look how much he intentionally rolls his hand when playing the inside picking licks slowly. That is exactly what Troy Grady says to do to master 2 way pick slanting. I tried to watch slowly and he rolls the pick with his thumb up to speed instead of moving his hand. Paul Gilbert does the same thing.

    All nice but... Wouldn't it be better without delay and distortion? It's not your case, but with such a loaded sound the right hand is almost useless if you have a good legato technique, while with clean sound there's no hiding and is all more useful from a learning perspective, at least for me. Nice of you to share anyway, thanks.

  • @stavsantis
    @stavsantis 4 роки тому

    For the life of me I cannot understand nor fathom how it would be more natural for someone to Economy pick& inside-pick when needing to cross over to the next string . It feels so uncomfortable for me & I can only alternate pick . It's weird because some of my friends can't get their heads around alternate picking either... Their brain can't compute how to cross over the string and play an upstroke... Is it a case of one over the other or can both be learnt successfully ??
    I grew up watching Paul Gilbert and JP...
    I've always wanted to learn economy picking but not only does the 'mini sweep' catch me out every time, but also my entire vocabulary of licks and phrases would no longer work as they are all based off of alternate picking lines... ie an Yngeie fast picking pattern combines odd and even number of notes on each string yet an alternate picking pattern will often be strict groups of 4s, 6s or doubled-up triplets... hence a bit stiffer and robotic.
    Any help or ideas ??

    • @lollipophugo
      @lollipophugo 4 роки тому

      You're not alone dude. For Rick, playing straight alternate would feel unnatural. I always watched JP and PG when I was learning and alternate pick everything as well, and for me outside picking to cross strings is much, much more fluid than inside picking.
      For me, there's no reason to choose one over the other, if you've grown comfortable alternate picking, just lean into that. It's not like you can't obtain ridiculous speeds with pure alternate picking.
