      Chrysler had really only one model [Newport/New Yorker] for most of the decades. Then the Cordoba made it two. LeBaron three. Now they are back to 2 with 150K sales. Like in 1970. Same ole Same ole.

      That's where . you leave out a lot of people. Buy only just offering a selected amount of models and types of vehicles. I have always been a firm believer. The automakers should make vehicles for all different tastes an offer a variety of choices

    @6:52 the Chrysler Fifth Avenue. I still recall how much my dad wanted one of these for himself and the family. But with a family comes other priorities and responsibilities. Wish I could go back in time and buy him one. To all the dads out there that work hard for their families and always just making do with what they can afford, you’re the ones we look up to.

      I mean the 70s were really cool too, but a little hairy for me.
      In the 80s they started caring for the way they looked a little more.
      Watch any 70s vs 80s porno and tell me I'm wrong.
      I haveta say, I kinda prefer the 80s for that reason.

      That version courtesy of Carroll Shelby.
      The very first non-Shelby Omni GLHs, from 1984, did not have a turbo, but rather the same high-output 2.2L used in the same year's Shelby Charger. The 1985-86 GLH (and Shelby Charger) did use the 2.2 turbo, but in 1986 the Shelby GLH-S finally showed up and had even better power than the GLH before it.

    I had a 1986 Dodge Omni GLH. 1986 was the first year that the 3rd brake light became Federal law on U.S. cars. My GLH was the base 110 hp 2.2L. Good for 0-60 mph in 8.5 secs with a top speed of 110 mph. Don't sound like much today, but was faster than a VW GTI, Ford Escort GT or Renault GTA at the time.

      A friend also had one around the same time. He was quite proud that he hadn't paid much for it. And, with a Chilton manual and basic Craftsman tool kit he picked up a Sears, he had learned almost everything from basic maintenance to replacing brakes and the radiator.
      The downside was that there was constantly something to be fixed.
      But it must have made a good impression. When he bought his first truly new car it was a Ram pickup.

    pioneering efforts by Chrysler in the 80's leads to today's cars. the lead bush chopper always gets shade..bc the brush hasn't been cleared yet :) as they were rebuilding their corporation after near collapse, late '70's, along the way they were the tip of the minivan, turbo & fine handling, sporty, great mpg spear. & they performed so well in harsh weather, deep snow etc, that contributed to so many being wrecked, rusted & wore out. deffo not just sunshine performers.

      On the Chrysler products I thought they should have changed the stamping for the trunk to allow a small bump in the back. Then make it part of the trunk right above the corporate emblem.

    I enjoyed this video thoroughly, though I find the complexity of Chrysler's line to be a little baffling. Maybe you just had to be there?

    Lee Iacocca was at a meeting i was at and asked what does GLH mean? He said" GOs like HECK!" THAT 1.6 Peugeot really ran.(don't remember it a car) 7,000 rpm w/push rods. I also had a HP 2dr K car 2.2 turbo but with 220 hp. Never went production , transaxle could not handle the power. Oh it accelerated faster then the Firebird turbo during PBPG pace car test.

    Dodge should have kept updating the daytona. History might have been different seeing a 2020 dodge daytona shelby.

    VISTA AT 8:57, BABY........YES!!!!!!!! And 7:51...........WHOA!!!!!! That tester is going to wipe that baby out if he keeps driving like that!!!!! And that blue Reliant at 9:21 is EXACTLY like the one that Mr. Rooney had in Ferris Bueller's Day Off!!!!! Kind of makes you wonder if the studio had a deal with Chrysler at that time & they got it right from the proving grounds!!!!!

    1:20 my buddy had one of those in college circa 1991, 1992. It was beat to Hell at the time. Amazing how fast cars fell apart back then. 8 year old cars were already "beaters". Compare to now. You can easily see a cherry 15 year old car. Better quality overall.

      There's a low-mile Daytona for sale nearby on a dealer lot. No idea what engine it's packing - all I know is he's had a stiff price on the Window so it's been there for about a year.

    • @JustinJenseninCurrentEvents
      @JustinJenseninCurrentEvents 9 років тому

      Justin Jensen Actually I just spotted it on the Houston Craigslist. It is indeed a 1986 Chrysler Laser turbo with 56000 miles and price has dropped to $2495. Surprised it hasn't sold yet - guess there's no love for these old Chrysler turbos any longer. It's been around the local car lots for at least a year.

      Yeah i just saw it and it's actually a nice car. Maybe people stereotype it as a unreliable car? But what's better between this or a Conquest/Starion?

    • @madfiat8932
      @madfiat8932 9 років тому

      Justin Jensen IIRC the Starion put out more power, and was rear wheel drive. But finding parts for one is probably going to be a lot harder, as nowhere near as many were sold.
      Main reliability issue on the turbo Mopars is head gasket. It's an easy job to replace, but not fun. One could get the block/head O-ringed and be done with the problem forever, but that takes money/effort on its own.

  • @bradfromthevalley
    @bradfromthevalley 6 місяців тому

    I like the Omni GLHS and the Laser, though the Laser looks like it should be rear wheel drive, it's looks close to a mustang and also a starion

    I love Mopars but do not look back at the 80s to mid 90s models with any great affection. I know Chrysler was still recovering from near bankruptcy and pretty much had to switch to cheaper to produce FWD vehicles to survive but they were not built very well. I had a 85 Turismo with the base 2.2. The little engine was great, dependable and very easy on gas but the car's body literally fell apart around my ears. I lost count of how many times I had to replace the door latches and the rods inside the doors. The seat backrest loved to pop loose whenever I had to stop on a steep hill and the gear-shift kept breaking loose due to some little plastic part. The glove box door broke off also. I don't know, maybe I just got a bad one but it really soured me on FWD....
