The Little Omni That Could - OG Turbo Dodge!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2017
- Old school FWD turbo cars always carry a certain nostalgia that we love. We’ve known Jeff a long time and we’ve always enjoyed seeing his Dodge Omni GLH (which stands for “Goes Like Hell”) out and about. For it’s age, he’s managed to keep it looking surprisingly clean and while it only makes around 300hp it is still a ton of fun to watch! Competing in I-29’s Heads Up No Prep Series at our local track I-29 Dragway, Jeff can be found going rounds in the Front Wheel Drive class!

00:50 anyone else laugh at his burnout before realizing he fried the clutch
Yup
YUP, only reason I came down in the comments to see if anyone else seen it lmao
Obey Happy same over here lol it was sad
Intelligent Investor haha
Lol, I saw that, too. The left front did a whole lot of "not spinning" during his burnout attempt. :D
I had a 86 GLH-T $10,700 sticker price. MP performance 10psi computer 14.9 1/4 mile @ 93.4 mph. At the time there was no such thing as a drag radial tire so were talking 2.3 second 60" times. A few years Later added a factory Shelby intercooler and turbo, larger injectors , 2.5" exhaust and 18psi, with 22" tall M/T slicks ran a 12.89 1/4 @ 108mph. It was fast back in the day...
I miss my 86' GLHS. I hustled a many a people in Milwaukee & Chicago back in the day with that car.
Back in the early 90's I had a vortech supercharged 5.0 with gear and exhaust, I almost lost to an Omni in a head up race. Beat him by a half car and I never underestimated these Shelby Dodge's ever again!
GLH's were not just called that for nothing... They were some very formidable little hatch's back in the day!!!
I had an '86 GLH Turbo w/high boost logic module: I know the "it's just an Omni" factor was worth a full half-second when going up against the neophytes.
I used to have a 90 Cavalier Z28 5 speed back in high school, red with grey paint. I blew it up! 😂
Old school turbo Dodge love.
njshift yup
I grew up owning and building turbo dodges. Never had an omni, but I had everything else. Daytonas, shadows, all those kinds of cars. I still have 2 daytonas. One is an iroc r/t 2.2 louts head powered car. In my oponion turbo dodges are some of the best sounding turbo cars out there. Lol stuff.
GLH GOES LIKE HELL Carroll Shelby design
"280" and that sheepish grin after was major LULZ
Love these under dog old school rides !!
1:41 when your grandpa says he’s faster and proves it
Goes Like Hell...brings back memories....had one of these GLH beasties when I lived In Hawaii way back in the 80's. Chipped and intercooled, it would scream up Tantalus Drive.
I love seeing underdogs kick ass. Especially against Hondas, which are everywhere.
8 Valve single over head cam no tech anything just killing the other cars no problem lol got to love the old turbo Mopar's!
I really enjoyed this! The Omni was before airbags and other safety stuff. It's so light! Would enjoy owning one just to tinker with the 2.2 turbo.
I had an Omni with the 2.2 HO....seriously HO.
It was a tank! Ran like a champ! Seriously impressive little smurf blue beast!
I remember when these were new,i worked on them, first one I ever put a crank it,i just stared at it,it was a work of art, compared to v6's and v8's,one fine little engine
I love this Omni. When I was a Chrysler tech, I worked with a guy who had a Omni that was screaming fast.
I had one of these use to destroy stangs and camaros and hondas little car was a stop light terror that 2.2 turbo was no joke
shigeolincolntaco shit. They put C4 vettes to shame right from the factory lol
I've owned 5 2.2 turbos in my life time, all daytona's, and i LOVED pissing off 5.0 junk lol
Yup off the line those little 2.2's are sneaky I had one victim follow me to the gas station asking me what just happened lol
I miss my GLH now. :( cracked a piston on the 2.2. There's a local guy with a sub 30k mile GLHS. If he didn't want $13k for the car, if probably go after it. Just can't justify spending 11k more than I spent on my GLH.
Yep with the driver mod stock high 14's. Since the late 90's custom burned chips have benefited these things. Plus the fact they are factory Garrett T3 cars making upgrades easy and affordable. Lots of them fell victim to snow bird rusting. There a few good examples here in Southern California.
I owned a blue one new back in 1986. Burned up when the fuel line pulled loose and spewed on the exhaust... damn that little car was fast, and a blast to drive... caused one Corvette driver to take his car back and demand something was wrong with his car.
BTW, 2.5 was not original - the L bodies were 2.2s (I worked for Chrysler fresh out of college to buy that GLH Turbo) - even so, damn cool to see one running!
I remember my friends GLH Turbo omni. Created soo much butthurt! Lol
I drove one back in the 80's. Turbo lag, lag, lag, BOOM!!
Had a buddy that had one of these back in the day (87') and we hurt some feelings with it.
How about 145hp and 2200 pounds if my memory serves me correctly.
Would get all over a 305 IROC or pre' 85 Mustang...
Throwing stones and beating my rock.
I had an 88 305 IROC and that thing was slow, it only had 195 hp.
Love watching this car at the no preps!
I'm smiling so bad . Great job guys.
Mr Regular would be proud
Asif Mahmud im not sure... but he would be interested
Turbo Dodge for life. They are still a threat to Honduh, even today
Nothing I love more than the FWD class.
The old L body turbo dodges were the original SRT4s.
One of my favorite cars to whip in Forza Horizon 3 is the Talbot Sunbeam tuned to class A. Basically a slightlly refined Omni.
Nope! Completely different, earlier car based off of the first gen Omni. This gen of Omni is a totally different design top to bottom. The American versions of that Sunbeam had a 1.9 VW engine or the Talbot 1.3? I think, I have never seen one of those, the 1st gen Omnis are basically nonexistant here anymore because no one has ever cared about them aside from me as far as I can tell lol. I've built a ton of second gen K car type L-body turbo Omnis, but they have nothing in common with the 79-82 ones that your 2 door was based on. We never got a 2 door version here in the US
The Omni GLH and GLHS used to show up Corvettes and Iroc Z cars all day.. when you see an Omni with the Swiss cheese rims..you may want to rethink your strategy
I've got an 86 base model 2.2 n/a I just pulled out of a garage that had been sitting for 13 years. Little bit of work and the thing really moves.
Lol!! That's ajuat amazing 👏 never ueard or saw an Omni GLH till now.. I want one now
I have the same car as him for 25 years all modified with big turbo and supporting stuff, fun as hell lots off good times wit it growing up, bone stock 15.6 mopar chip and gut the cat 14.6 last run about 12 years ago 12.5 now in heated storage last 2 years as i dive other sport cars i own. my buddy had/has a rampage that had 2.5 turbo all modded to the max and ran 10.0 at 135mph before 1320 video was even thought off.
GLH {goes like hell} actual designation
best car ever, my dad used to race these
We need to crowd fun this build so we can have "The Little Battle That Could" between this and the integra.
Cool that it's an automatic, it's nice to see a fwd car go down the track instead of miss gears and break!
They didn't do the GLH Turbo in an automatic. They were manual only. Of course, he transplanted, but he took the bones of the GLH and he definitely caught the essence. The 2.2l Turbo cars (G/H bodies, heck even the K car convertibles) with the automatic trans were basically a 904 TorqueFlite turned sideways - all the valve bodies etc were designed for over 300 hp.. and running torque-flites in dragging are a thing - so yeah, totally makes sense to do it.
I had a tuned GLH, water injected and boosted with a manual controller under the hood. I embarrassed a bunch of cars of the day. One of them being a 911. It had an 85 mph speedo and i frequently saw it wound around over 360*, pointing at the 15 MPH indicator on the clock. It was the most fun car I ever had because no one took it seriously.
I love them little cars lol, I hope you got video of that Z24 also
VW Rabbit (Golf)Diesel ;) Nice one Jeff.
My brother had a couple of these and baked the turbo in both cases. These little cars serve a great purpose though. Power adders done better can change your life. This was before water cooling or oil coolers for turbos. That’s all very common these days.
Wow, that's a really nice GTI! Those diesels can really move!
Bunch of blue fwd cars goin fast. Shweet
hey 1320 why you not show the engine bay
Joe Tee some drivers don't like showing their build
Or it could’ve been a slapped junk looking build that didn’t look all that great..
Probably a combo of the two. The 8V 2.2 engines aren't all that pretty, haha.
May not have looked much different than the normal blow through intake, unless he manahed to get his hands on the Calloway (yes, THAT Calloway!) Intercooler system for the draw through set up that car came with......which would be pretty awesome and explain the cowl hood.
Joe Tee that's what I thought too, exactly that...wtf? I wanted to see it too
I remember the commercials for this little dodge omni, they said
" no more Mr. Nice guy"
Lol.
Owned an 85 Selby Dodge Charger. That was a fun little car.
+1 for the electronic 1320 billboard plug at the end of the dragstrip ^_^
280, lol 'gentleman's agreement'
Dodge Omni GLH
Stands for "GOES LIKE HELL !"
Its what we called in the UK a Talbot Horizon, was part of the old UK Rootes group bought by Chrysler of which the Hillman Hunter was sold tooling and all to Iran as the Peykan but the floorpan and some mechanicals carried onto the later Sunbeam and Horizon, the cars "little" sister was the incredible Lotus Sunbeam which was a rally champion car and incredibly quick and built on the same floorpan, Chrysler were working on a mid engined Lotus Horizon with the 911 Lotus lump but never went into the mainstream as around this time the UK operation was being spun off to Peugeot and the project was cancelled. It seems this became quite the star in the US with the Omni, the Shelby tuned were very quick indeed, sadly most of the European stuff has long rusted away but glad to see some survive over there :D
Weren't they rear wheel drive, though?
Cute little fwd cars
I miss my 86 goes like hell Turbo...best car ever.
the shelby charger was pretty quick too
I bought a GLH new in 1985. Ran low 15's stock which in it's day was fast enough to beat Z28, MonteSS, Non EFI mustang and whatnot.
NON efi???? My neighbor had one that smoked every fuel injected 5.0 in town.
The funny part is , owned a 80's GTI rabbit made me want this car.
My folks had an ‘86 and I’d take the keys any chance I could get. To this day (for reals), I’ve NEVER been in any hatch whose torque could throw your head back like that GLH.
I remember the very specific SOUND of that turbo winding up. Hoooooo t’was one beauticious sleeper of the decade. 🤘🤘
My mom and dad had a 1979 horizon and later bought a 1984 Omni great cars.
I miss my little Dodge Omni😢😢
Very good
Looks like it 60-foots like a champ!
More of the cavalier!
Oh man, I had one it's called a Simca Horizon with the 1.7l engine. Before selling it we've swapped in a more modern dohc1.8. Rustbucket but surprisingly reliable
My first car , Dodge Dayton turbo z . Same setup when stock .
Lol when it’s the lawnmower expo at the drag meet
I wanna see more of that Z24
ZeeTwentyFour check out z24 vs zo6, 1320 video
Omni the original srt-4
Before Mitsubishi Evo invaded these shores... GLH"s were the American Evolution hot hatch .. a badass poor man vw GTi
There was a turbo omni listed here in ga last week
Would have liked to see the set up.
I used to own one of these, 5 speed standard. I used to get smirks on the highway, until I dropped it down to 4th and hit the gas!
Dodge Ommi GLH .... The Phymouth Road Runner of the '80's ... Cheap , Fast and tough to beat....
Talbot Horizon in the UK, used have one.
My buddy had one of these for a few months in Highschool. Pretty fast little piece of shit even in stock form for the 80s, thing is we we're driving it around in the early 2000's
Hey 1320 they just had a sfwd shootout in new jersey. U guys should go to those events. Low 8 sec fwd and 9 sec all motor Hondas. Good stuff
These guys that film really ask some dumb questions! 😂
Go Omni go
LOL 0:49
Poor clutch RIP
I believe thats the whole transmission
Fileeraus he's driving a Honda...what do you expect...lol
Brand new that car didn't weight 2800 lbs. More like 2200. I had the Charger back then, they were lightweight cars.
Alvin Brinson I had an 86 duster/turismo and an 89 Shelby Daytona turbo in high school. Wish I never sold them.
Mine weighs in at just over 2300LBS with me in it and I weigh 330LBS, so mine is probably somewhere around 1970LBS. only the headliner has been removed, But its a Blast!
I had a barebones 81 Horizon. Loved that little car. In the space of 3 weeks I had two wrecks. The first was a guy who drove his truck right across my rear end (I was backing out of my g/f's driveway, saw him coming and stopped, he had plenty of room but still hit me). While I was fighting that battle I was leaving high school and some sophomore pulled out in front of me while turning into the opposite lane so we hit head on. My poor Horizon was demolished. Warped the frame in two different directions (center of the car was pushed back while the sides slammed forward), front end was reduced backwards by two feet, windshield was gone, all four doors ruined, dash was cracked in half and the back seat got blood all over from a friend who had one of my rear speakers break loose and hit him right below the eye socket. The only parts salvageable were the rims and tires and the back hatch glass (all four doors had cracks in the glass).
My 1st new car was a 1985 dodge omni. When I left the dealership I couldn't believe how quick it was.
My "loaded" 86 GLH Turbo (only option it didn't get was a sunroof) - so A/C, upgraded stock stereo, Aftermarket Cruise Control, Intermittent Wipers, floor mats - with my skinny little butt in it rolled across the scales at 2115 lbs when it was brand new back in 1986. LIGHTWEIGHT!
That black dodge over his shoulder tho
I used to own an '85 GLH Turbo and that little car was such a blast! Unfortunately I ended up rolling it over and totalled it.
If I remember right these cars you can bolt in a built automatic on the 2.2/2.5's
Have my GLH-S in storage.. Yes I've had many mistake it as a 🐰 if they were on point they would know that rabbit GT-i back when was 2 door.. In the 80's I would kill everyone in the streets with my "Omni"
whats a car like that doing in a storage man :/
2:56 this must be the fastest 280Hp car lmao
No engine shot, I would of liked to see the setup on that old school setup.
Back when i was in my 20's i built myself an 84/85 Daytona turbo Z with only very little mods to it and people couldn't believe how fast that car actually was... And then I'd take them out in a twisty back road and literally scare the he@$: out of them... LofingL!!!😂😅
front wheel drive OMEGALUL
I've heard some cute stories about people in big block muscle cars getting bested by these little 2.2L turbo Omnis. They never suspect it. I had a 2.0L Plymouth Horizon when I was a kid. Nothing special, but it got me around town.
yo fricking rabbit
this one is French, not German
I miss my 88 glh
I have a regular Plymouth horizon and I think umma go ahead and turbo it haha
Show us them engine bays!!!
None of the GLH GLH-T or GLH-S were mandatory with a 5 speed gutrag manual transmission. Carroll Shelby didnt make any of these with an automatic 3 speed.
Years ago a friend had one of these, embarrassed a LOT of cars. Went through half shafts like they were made of pretzel rods though.
I wish My Summer Car sounds like dizzzzz
My mom had one of these when I was about 11
1:53 You are the new.. winner of the.. front wheel drive.. class?
Idk about the "stock 2.5", pretty sure all GLH omnis had 2.2's
I had a black on red GLH Turbo back in the day. Bought her at sticker $10,014.00
My college's WiFi won't even let me watch this in 360....
thomas grasmick get yourself one of those TRAVEL routers. TP-Link or ai-net makes good ones. Will likely triple your connection speed. tinyurl.com/ycm3lpsx
Tocki Cohi BOI
When bae says come over at 11 but you gotta save Chrysler at 10
sumbeam talbot, they made one in uk with Lotus twin cam in it.
True "Drag Car" dragged it out of a field and restored it. nice
