  • Wilson Little Wil CB Antenna Disassemble and troubleshoot Bad SWR.
Lets look and see what this antenna looks like inside. This is a great antenna for a stock CB in a temporary type installation. Dont push more than 1oo watts through this antenna and it will last for a long time. Put a little silicone around the coax as it passes through the base.
BTW...This antenna is very easy to tune, and has decent bandwidth (for a mag mount )

Thanks for posting the vid. I wasn't sure how to tear it down. My set screw rusted out on it. Now I have to buy a repair kit. But it's a decent antenna for what I use.

Tuned easily and works well. Yes you are right. I am saying about my Stryker SR-A10 CB Antenna. Quality materials, excellent whip, difficult to cut with your standard wire cutters FYI. The magnet is super strong, all around terrific product. Couldn't be happier with mine. I got an SWR reading of 1.2 on 19 and 11 and somewhere around 2.2 on channel 40 and 1. Installed on top of the roof in the center and have the cable going through the rear door and on to my CB handheld Midland that plugs into the cig lighter. There's a little feedback but I think that's normal. Great product.

My little will was giving me high swr on and a bit of trimming on the bottom of the antenna gave me almost perfectly even SWR readings on ch 1 and ch 40 right below 2.

Thanks for the explanation. Well crap I ordered the lil wil because it was shorter than the bigger wilson's. I planned on running a little heat on it because it said 300w rating. Thanks for the video it saved me from burning it up. I guess I'll leave it bearfoot on my truck.

I think they're rated for 300w. I have one on my F150 hooked up to a 959. But like you said... "rated" for 300w doesn't mean it will actually handle it. Thanks for the tear-down and explanation video! I may start looking into other magnet base antennas. I'm definitely not a fan of K40's due to bad experiences. The best I've found are the older "Moon Raker" antennas. They're hard to find around here though. Thanks again!

I've finally stopped w/ a co-phased pair for background noise cancelling, proper is twin 75 ohm coax soldered to the assembly. Thunder Bolt 200 does great. 75% efficiency means I'm splitting 150 watts in 2, but I can talk from the city to 41 miles back to the house each night like it's nothing (or right next door as it were).I'm keeping this cause I park in parking garage at work and over all height of stingers on road picks up great AND is still safe in 12 flites a day going to and coming from work.

Just got one of these for my wife’s car. Uniden handheld to the Lil Will. SWR was way high on ch 40. That’s with the whip all the way down. Had to cut a 1/4” at a time to get 40 and 1 to about 1.3 swr. After that it was awesome! Had a short skip conversation from SoCal to Mobile Alabama. Conditions were super right!! Didn’t last long though.

Moisture will skyrocket the SWR and also burn stuff up with shorts. Dry the thing off once in awhile. I ran a hot rodded Cobra 25 LTD, one watt swinging 20, into a White Tornado 225, through a Little Wil for several years with absolutely no problems. It had real good ears and I talked to whoever I could hear, skipped all the time . Great for lil amps like a 225.

There are two capacitors in my antenna, one is 120pf 1kv and the other has no indication, do you know the value of the other one ???

  • @Possumn1138
    @Possumn1138 5 років тому +2

I was working on replacing the (door jam crimped) coax on mine yesterday, I measured the capacitor as 7.9 pf on mine with my LCR meter while it was out of circuit, (The markings on it are; 1 KV 180K B ) (180K comes out as 18 pf in value so my capacitor is definitely out of spec.) And I remembered seeing your video and came back to comment.
Yours visibly appears to have an additional small molded inductor in parallel with a blue capacitor in the matching network. And the video seems to suggest there was a second one after this, that had deteriorated or the blue one it self had partially deteriorated. But I may be mistaken in this from watching the video.
Mine (which was bought used but was working well, may be older, or previously repaired or modified before I got it.) only has the single 7.9 pf (as measured value) capacitor from the ground lug to the coax center connection point.
Can you give me any data on those parts your video seems to show on your unit ? Is there a smaller molded inductor in parallel and does it have a visible color code? Were there two capacitors in series in the network or just the one blue one the video seems to show?
I can easily take mine back apart and rebuild it as it once was with a new capacitor of correct value, and perhaps measure the coil inductance as well along the way as I do so..
My replacement RG8u coax @ 18 feet long has moved the 1:1 SWR a bit off from the original RG-58 15 foot length anyway. I was planning to reset the SWR later today for the same mounting point it had occupied.
But reviewing your video again this morning gave me a few questions to think about.

I can't give any information as we have thrown out the antenna and replaced it with a stryker 5k mag mount,
going from the lil will to the stryker is like night and day. Good luck and please report any findings, Im sure there are people that could use your input...BB23

Like base load CB antennas, they have power limits. The spec sheet put out by Wilson says "300 watts" maximum amount of power. My question to Wilson would, are saying 300 watts maximum power 300 watts peak envelope power or dead carrier? Personally, I'm betting they are measuring peak envelope power. A stainless steel quarter wave whip is way to go when doing the " more than 4 watts thing". but as we all know, not every situation permits this type of antenna.

Wow I made this post 3 years ago. Well since then I have gotten my Amateur Radio License and have 1100 foot of loop antenna, balanced line tuner, 1500 watt Al-800H amplifier, SteppIR BigIR Vertical Antenna with 60x65' radials, DX Engineering Active Receive Verticals, Flex Software Defined Radio, and a host of other tools and antennas. CB got me into HAM radio and HAM radio is about superior to CB in every way. Not saying superior in people but the ability to go where ever from 1.8mhz all the way to multi-ghz frequencies and everywhere in between. I don't use the 108" whip anymore. I use a Scorpion SA680 Screwdriver Antenna and I use an ICOM IC-7000 while mobile. I still have my UNiden Pro520XL tuned by Screwdriver in Florida and the little thing swings 27 watts which is awesome. But I find CB radio to be highly undesirable these days due to the trash talking, every other word is the F word, kind of Trucker language on every frequency it seems. That and Skip is down very badly right now and will be so for years to come on 11 meters. But DX is good on other bands. Get your HAM license and come out of the Dark Side to the other Dark side haha. Its good over here.

Something sounds off... Make sure your coax is not cut into or kinked. Make sure you have in on a large enough piece of metal. It the antenna used? possibly the first owner blew out the innards.
I would also measure the whip and see if it was already cut ( maybe way to short)
These antennas will usually tune quite easy and as long as the SWR is in the 1.5 area should work fine. But most definitely sounds like your may have an internal issue. IMO

On the one that was given to me, the caps were in perfect shape. It looked like someone tried to replace the coax and made a mess of it. Even in your video it looks like the original coax run is a little convoluted. (I think they do that so that nothing breaks if the coax happens to move a little bit.) I ended up running the coax a little differently and didn't bother covering the coil and caps. (the heat shrink would only hold in water anyway.) The SWR still dipped nicely and the antenna appears to be working just fine. Since my coax run was straighter than the original, I put a little bit of goop on the coax to prevent it from moving inside the assembled unit. The 2nd little coil does serve a purpose. The center bolt on the bottom of the coil is not attached to anything and serves as a ground post. It is there to bolt the assembly together. There is some good reading at the k0bg.com/match.html for anyone who wants to understand why this little coil is necessary.
