  • This is my early journey into large format printing on a gel plate (16x20). I've been gel printing for many years but never this large, until I went through a hard season losing my husband to brain injuries. I came across Fulton Sim at @artwhisperer88 who continually inspires many of us with his retro minimalist printmaking with collage, and sometimes, he's inspired from other modern art masters, as he demonstrates.
    I'm inspired by Fulton, his art practice, his methodology, and his desire to educate the UA-cam audience about printmaking, but I'm going my own way of exploration with printmaking in an effort NOT TO COPY him. I hope I inspire you in some small way, too.
    I am inspired by many other artists, too many to name personally here, but my art heroes continue to influence me daily: Judy Woods Art @judywoodsart and Pam Caughey @PamelaCaughey.
    I'm still not 100% and without my best friend, I won't be for awhile. But if I can do this creative life, so can you. Remember, Dreams Never Die.

      Happy New Year to you, too, Fulton. Last year was brutal, but the new year is looking brighter. My bone marrow biopsy results are in my patient portal, and though I don't understand it all, I think it's good news. Peace 🌿 🌿 🌿

    Kate, I love your work, and I greatly appreciate you sharing your process. As a beginner, it’s incredibly helpful to me to see that even accomplished artists don’t always get masterpieces with every attempt, and that what may look like a failure often can be turned into a beautiful piece with additional layers. And if not, at the very least there is great information to be gleaned from the process. So please don’t ever feel the need to apologize for any perceived “oopses”. Those often provide the best lessons. ❤

    Like Fulton says, the ghost always wins! Btw, welcome to S.A.! I've lived here for more than 50 years, so if you're new here, let me know if I can help. Best Thai food in town? Thai Cafe, a humble little place off Nacogdoches run by Lek and her daughters. Great museums - the old Pearl brewery now houses the SA Museum, and the McNay (used to be free, haven't been since covid tho). You probably know all this tho! Anyways, great session!

    Love your work and find these videos so inspiring! One question -- it seems like you get a lot more open time with your paints than I do. I am using similar brands, but find they dry on the plate pretty quickly. Any thoughts or suggestions on open / drying time would be appreciated!

    • @KateWordArt
      @KateWordArt  3 місяці тому

      Emily, many people ask me that. I can't explain why, other than I'm using heavier body paints. I find Amsterdam acrylics to be great for my purposes. It's a learning curve for how much paint to use, but I tend to use more than average applications. I work quickly to remove my masks, and I use 💯 % watercolor paper or printmaking papers for absorption & good transfers. Peace 🌿

      Thank you, Arabella! My table is a table from Home Depot, covered with 4ml plastic, then a 24"× 36" quarter inch plexiglass. My registration guides are 2 T-squares set to measures for accommodating my 16x20" gelli plate. Here's a link for these: www.amazon.com/dp/B08HWCLV87/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_apa_gl_i_S4NEX165SGW75B5QEQ00?linkCode=ml2&tag=katewortart-20. I got the plexiglass from Home Depot also. Hope this helps! Can you say what paper you use to pull large format prints? I would love a link as Amazon doesn’t seem to have a range of sizes and assuming Kraft paper rolls aren’t strong enuf ? Tx.

      There should be a link below the video in the notes for the items I use. I don't order that much paper from Amazon. Most papers I use come from Dick Blick and I ake advantage of quantity discounts when I can. Kraft paper isn't strong enough for this kind of printmaking. Perhaps on a small plate for collage papers, but this kind of pulling needs a stronger paper. Here's an Amazon link, but pricey. amzn.to/3IGc3hQ

    I just heard you say cold pressed fabriano or blick but to clarify, I mean posters that are uneven edges… or larger like 4x6? I think you’re saying watercolor is good but is photo paper, inkjet? Bond all workable?

    • @KateWordArt
      @KateWordArt  4 місяці тому +1

      Susan, If you mean 4x6 feet, you'd have to find paper on a roll. Amazon does have a mixed media paper on a roll. It may be Strathmore, I'm not sure. I've used cold & hot press watercolor paper or printmaking paper. The importance is the fiber content for paint absorption. You'll get best results with 100% cotton papers. There are cotton w cellulose that work but not always with best results, but they are usually student grade and cheaper. If you want to use inkjet copy papers, you'll get good collage paper results on a small plate 8x10 or smaller. I don't recommend photo papers. All these papers I'm using in these larger format prints are 22x30" single sheets, some with deckled edges, some with straight. You'll need to experiment lots to find what you prefer according to the size of your plate & paint you're using. I hope this helps. I'm sorry for any confusion. Peace 🌿

    Hat paper to you use?

    • @KateWordArt
      @KateWordArt  6 місяців тому

      I used Fabriano hot press, but I ran out, and now I'm using Blick watercolor paper, which I'm really liking. 100% cotton is the key to good printmaking results.
