Lalo was a genius. He could tackle all sorts of genres. You could always tell when he was involved in the score of a movie too. He had a certain sound...a certain 'hook'. he was unique. Listen to the first 'Dirty Harry" movie..he had strings, wind, percussion but added fuzz bass, fuzz guitar, tabla and a number of other eclectic sounds, mixed with complex time signature variations to pull together amazing themes for the movie...blows minds.
Lalo Schifrin is one of the most underrated composers of the 20th century. No body has used Tabla in an innovative and cool way than him in soundtracks.

After the series “Mission: Impossible” started on TV in the ‘60s, the theme song was immediately recognizable and justifiably popular. In 1968 my roommate at boarding school had a copy of an LP of Lalo’s music from the show, and that’s how I found who he was as well as how good he was. So since then I’ve always watched for his name.

One of the greatest and least acknowledged musicians in American history. His 1960's album tribute to the Marquis DeSade is the greatest combination of jazz and classical music I've ever heard. It should be brought to the concert hall asap.

What aN ABSOLUTE TREASURE. I found Lalo through Dizzy and Leo Wright was a San Franciscan, so I heard him a lot when he played in jazz clubs in North Beach. Then Dizzy heard Leo and snatched him up and took Leo on the road with he from that point forward. After he was gigging everywhere and nowhere to be seen/heard in S.F.. The first time I met him he told me he was a pygmy, which he wasn't he was just a short man. He was my friend and I learned that he died in 1991 and when I got the news it was the late 90s. A dear friend who deserved the attention he got. Sad loss at only 57. Never learned WHY he died so young.
Hi John, thank you so much for this documentary on `Lalo.....what an absolute gentleman he is...I was very fortunate to play guitar with him here in Dublin in 2010 and have great memories (and stories) to cherish and share...I cant find the second half of your documentary however...Is there somewhere `I can view it by any chance? Why couldn't the guy manage "a white guy". What a strange thing to say. I understand why he said it, but what a sad commentary for a Black musician at that time. You'll hear this in the one of the opening comments of the one black guy who is much older. But Lalo made so much music. This guy is a genius in his music. And I agree, Dizzy Gillespie was also a genius and looked past colour for Lalo to show his talent. Lalo also must have been wealthy as heck because of the body of music in his repertoire! He's made such memorable themes in his career. I had to look him up. Interesting documentary.He was the best in his film composing. That's how I know about him, his music sticks in your head and he conducted TV compositions for "Mannix " and other shows in the 70s. "MIssion Impossible" is the jam and was great before its time because the music has a powerful sound. I wish that part 2 were here because the story is fascinating.
