I appreciated this demo. It was nice not to hear slap or aimless noodling around on the blues scale. My favorites in tone were the Music Man and the Hofner. People usually say Music Man is brighter than other basses, but this one was one of the bassiest options you played.
@@bapt_andthebasses Sure. But if they are all set "flat," as I assume these were, the Music Man would normally sound the brightest. If you roll back on the tone, of course the Music Man is going to sound darker. But I doubt he had the tone rolled back on only that specific instrument. It's true that a Music Man is more warm and versatile than it's given credit for, though.
@@rome8180 I'm not sure if you can roll the tone of such a MM, because it's only active (if I'm not mistaken ?). The description says it's all flat, BUT, a Cab simulation was engaged! I agree that it should definitively sounds brighter! A Music Man to me has some versatility but not as much as the 2 other classics we know as P's and J's, right? :)
@@bapt_andthebasses My HH MM Stingray Special is really versatile. It has Bass, Middle and Treble controls, a setting that sounds like classic Ray, 1 that's similar to a J, 1 that's similar to a P and 2 positions I don't use too much.
@@bapt_andthebasses Huh, you can "roll the tone off" in an even more powerful way since it's active (bass up, treble down). And the Stingray is more versatile than the P for sure and it's about even with the J. There's a TON of sounds you can get from a single sweet position pick-up + active EQ, from scooped mids slapping to heavy mids picking and everything in-between. P only gets you 2 sounds (tone up or tone down) and Jazz gets you a few more but not too many.
The other basses don’t meant to do by any means the same dry hifi fodera or cutting spector tone at all, each bass have it’s own personality, that’s why there many different bodies, scales, pickups, woods and builds on basses
I’m a guitarist looking to pick up bass. This always happens to me, I close my eyes and listen open them when I hear what sounds good, and it’s the fucking Fodera $4k. fml
The Stingray suprised me most. I'll always be a P guy, but that Stringray had some comparable low down girth I was not expecting with that pickup placement.
Would have liked to hear this with a few riffs, or even just one that isn't almost entirely halfway up the neck, so we can hear what they sound like in that lower register most of us are going to use the majority of the time
How did the fodera feel? I'll probably never touch one. But I don't think they sound super special for the price. But there is obviously something to them.
The player is playing too close to the bridge for me to get any real idea of how these basses would sound in my hands. My right hand position is a good 3" further toward the neck. On a Fender Jazz, the neck pickup is my thumb rest. That's how you get solid rock tone. Playing close to the bridge like that leads to anemic tone, too heavily weighted toward high partials and no *oomph* in the bass register.
@@overdriven77 I said that a year ago, since then I've fallen in love with jazz basses and I now own a Squire Classic Vibe 60s Jazz Bass in Daphne Blue LOLLL
I'm a beginner still, so i might not get yet what it's actually about, but the Precision Bass is the only bass in this that sounds like a proper musical instrument to me.
You need to set the controls to more Apples to Apples. That Spector sounds nothing like mine as I don’t use the bridge pickup solo. Followed by P bass. Lol
I love the P-bass sound as much as I hate their necks. I'm this close to retrofiting a P on my Deluxe MiM J. Or sell it and get a Player Jaguar, if Fender ever decides to put some nice colours on that line 😃😃😃😃
did you adjusted each bass or you just hold the same settings (effects, eq) for all the basses? they sounds quite the same, the fender JB sounds bad :/
The fedora has some secret sauce it Cut the mix so well! But I guess for 5 grand It better! would love to to try one someday maybe when i'm an old man I'll have the cash to have one someday.
My favorite basses, Warick Thumbs, Fender Precisions, Ibanez SRs, and Epiphone Thunderbirds (I do not like the gibson ones, the epi vintage pro has the same pickups for 1/3 of the price and sounds just as good to my ears), all in one video
Something is wrong with that MM. Perhaps dieing preamp battery? They always have a high cut to the tone on top of the bottom end. Unless you have the eq off by accident
I appreciate the video but it really let me down. Would have loved to have had some picking down where people usually play. I feel like if people would just think less is more sometimes. We know your a hell of a player but the point was a shootout. We didn’t get that
The 75 reissue jazz is nothing like a 75 jazz. In 75 they didn't have matching paint head stocks,....and the maple necks had pearl blocks by 75 not black blocks.
The video: *ends*
My brain: *TU TURUM TUM TURURUM*
hahaha
those Danelectros always sound so much better than i think they will
Too bad they're the ugliest instruments in history
The Longhorn bass of Danelectro it's perfect 👌
danelectro basses are the "butterfaces" of basses
I had the same reaction.
@@bassman3235 that's half of why I like 'em

Because of EQ. A MM should not sound like that by "default"

Spector and Fodera were my personal favorites. Other brands just dont reach that sort of tone without Eq.

4k? for the hardware maybe.
Excellent move; presenting basses in the mix, and then sole sounds of them. Love it!
To me the Spector and the Fender 55 P bass are the best there!
Nice comparison video, except for a minor concern: the bass at 0:53 is a Hofner Contemporary Violin Bass instead of Hofner Ignition Beatle Bass.
The Fender Jazz and Precision were my favorites. But I did like Stingray too.
Ive been listening to so much King Gizzard that i adore the Mustangs sound. How is it so recognizeable to my ears?
The Stingray suprised me most. I'll always be a P guy, but that Stringray had some comparable low down girth I was not expecting with that pickup placement.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!
Cool demo. of all the basses on this clip, I like the jazz basses, the stingray, the danelectro, and the Ibanez the most.
Loved the demos, loved the groove. Thank you!
None of these basses are bad sounding, just this song suits that vintage flatwoundy tone the best.
First P Bass and the Mustang are my picks.
That Mustang roars like a lion!!
No joke they all sound good.
Would have liked to hear this with a few riffs, or even just one that isn't almost entirely halfway up the neck, so we can hear what they sound like in that lower register most of us are going to use the majority of the time
Thunderbird fits this song the best. Also liked the Fodera, I'm a PJ guy
The Spector for me. Hands down.
I love that sound
Awesome review an amazing flavor of basses!
Have a few there but need to add a few as well to be rounded out!
Stingray always sound so good, but specially in this video Stingray was just PERFECT!
The best tone i ever heard!
My top 3 for sound and design: Music Man Stingray, Epiphone Thunderbird, Fender Precision
I'm impressed that Ibanez has warm tone for active bass.
agree
Bartolini pickups
fake barts
the model has an active/passive switch
Damn, the bite of the 75 Jazz Bass sounds so good!!!... Yo, where's the Rick?! 😱😱😱
I'd say Warwick Thumb or Fodera sounded best overall, but the Fender Mustang fit the song the best
Welp. I've said it before and I'll say it again...Fender Jazz fo lyfe
'55 P is straight up ballin'
Great test
This song is amazing!!
whatb is the song in this bass demo? very cool
Kumomi, by uhh, kumomi
Based on this comparison, I prefer 1. Spector 2. Ibanez 3. Fener J
Top 3:
1. American Professional P Bass
2. Fodera Yin Yang Standard
3. Music Man Stingray Special
Honorable Mention to the Warwick Thumb.
The Fender jazz am prof was amazing
Love that '55
P Bass all the way!
Music Man and Hofner. Would have liked to see a Yamaha BB in the mix!
How did the fodera feel? I'll probably never touch one. But I don't think they sound super special for the price. But there is obviously something to them.
The Fodera was incredible. Once you pick it up you can just feel that it’s pretty special.

Agree. Was disappointed in how the thumb and spector sounded because of this.
I own the strandberg boden prog and honestly they are amazing basses!!!!!!
You can see why people love Fodera. Well rounded tone
Where’s a G&L?!?
You all need some MFDs in your life!
Thomann unfortunately doesn't have G&Ls...
M2000 tribute for life
The Jazz bass sound has always sounded thin and rattley to me. Precision, Mustang, and Ernie Ball were my favorites
that's jazz bass with both pickups full on. It sounds the best on neck pickup and tone rolled a little away IMHO.
@@overdriven77 I said that a year ago, since then I've fallen in love with jazz basses and I now own a Squire Classic Vibe 60s Jazz Bass in Daphne Blue LOLLL
Not a single Yamaha bass? SMH

American Professional P Bass worked the best for the song IMHO; I subjectively prefer Alder + Rosewood though.
Did you roll the tone off on the Stingray? It sounds like it.
You need to set the controls to more Apples to Apples. That Spector sounds nothing like mine as I don’t use the bridge pickup solo. Followed by P bass. Lol
Great, I hope you recorded the DI so you can reamp them and do another shootout with some distortion

I'm a long time drummer just starting to learn the bass.
Does anyone know what song he is using..?
Sounds like Cheryl Crow.
The song is kumomi by kumomi
There's also a kumomi by nujabes if you're into his music
Sandberg 48, stingray and the danelectro for me

The Marleaux and the Fender 55 for me.
WARWICK Rules!
did you adjusted each bass or you just hold the same settings (effects, eq) for all the basses? they sounds quite the same, the fender JB sounds bad :/
The hofner sounded pretty boomy to me, normally it'd sound that way when the bridge pup's turned off, or maybe it's just me.
The musicman sounded odd.
I’m in love with the spector, well, to be honest, with all of them.
That Justang is a gut punch.

Fender's all the way.
Warwick thumb ofc

Ibanez and Spector.....a winner is them.
That Spector sounded like plastic to me....

If anything, this video proves: the sound is in your fingers.
There's always an idiot repeating this nonsense.
sounds like Into the Mystic
I was thinking the same thing.
It would have been interesting to hear them below the ninth fret.
I would have preferred the plucking to be about halfway between the bridge and the end of the fingerboard, especially for a tone comparison.
Nice video. Is that '55 P Bass an original or a reliced re-issue?
Relic Reissue. As is the ‘75 Jazz (but without any relic)
What's the name of the song?
Stingray and Spector sounded great to me
the cheap series Höfner bass response really is impressive
Where's Rickenbacker? That's another important bass in history!
Make a video for the ibanez sr500e pleasee
Damn that song fucken goes tho
Music man sounds best
Preci is the only one for me in this case. But the Yamaha TRBX still rules them all
