      Do you think you are coming out ahead upgrading piece by piece? I suppose if the parts are used, then you can get ahead. But if you buy new parts, would you pay the same in total as you would just buying a more expensive bike?

    I want to see these bikes force brands like Trek to make their entry level bikes better and cheaper. There’s no reason for a Marlin to not have a tapered head tube, and there’s no reason for any Marlin models to be over $500 without being fully upgradable to modern specs. There’s no reason for any bike shop brands to be selling bikes with a cheap 3x drive train. And if you can turn a Mongoose XR Pro into a more than passable full squish for $1000 then the bike shop brands can do the same.

    • @mplsmark222
      @mplsmark222 10 місяців тому +1

      Don’t underestimate the costs that bike shop brands incur with promotion and advertising. They spend hundreds of millions on ads, race and rider sponsorship. The local bike shop doesn’t make much on entry level bikes, their profits are on accessories and service.
      I personally have been fixing up bikes since I was a kid, I enjoy it very much. But most people really don’t have the time or interest in collecting tools and getting their hands dirty. The LBS is very important to keep rider on their bike and riding safe, and the price of the bike is a reflection of what they have to charge to be profitable.
      Having said that, I have owned a number of bikes that were bought used or direct from the manufacturer, I don’t really get much value from a LBS as a rule, but recognize how important they are to the bicycling community.

    Just got mine.
    Probably have about 60 miles or so between moderate trails, light trails, gravel hike/bike paths, and pavement.
    Had to adjust the front brakes, tweak the handlebar installation, something weird with the derailleur, and of course air the tires before I rode it.
    I chose to put a fat butt, gel seat on.
    After fixing the assembly mistakes and adjusting it to fit me, I’ve had zero issues.
    The spring fork does suck, but not as much as I expected it to.
    Unless something breaks, the only mod I plan to do is upgrade to an air fork.
    I’ve only ridden it for 3 days, so that’s not a true review, but it’s been fun to ride.
    I’m not making Redbull videos, so it will likely handle my skill level.
    So far, pleased with my purchase.
    👍😎

    Hi Kevin. This OT ridge is way better and cheaper than my trek 3500 was new. And that one is way back from 2013. These new walmart bikes are awesome and better than entry level LBS bikes. Thank you for your channel and videos. Not sorry for the haters.

    picked one of these up marked down to $288 from my local Walmart with a flat tire, loose seat, and "missing kickstand" literally just had to adjust the presta valve, pump it up and straighten the seat. I've been riding a pair of 2003 specialized hotrocks and I've gotta say, this modern budget derailuer shifts so much smoother than my aging shimano altus. The brakes however are absolutely awful, the V brakes on my hotrock with old pads are better, and the fresh pads on my other hotrock make the radius brakes look laughably bad.
    That said, after swapping my preferred grips, pedals and seat on the bike I'm thoroughly impressed, with the rest of the bike, the frame feels great, the 29" tires make a huge difference in the rooty loose soil on my trails, and I had no clue what kind of difference larger handlebars would make

    Ok, ok, ok....I was on the fence about buying one (because since 2021 I've bought a GT Aggressor Pro, Kent Trouvaille, I won a Giordano Intrepid from Kent Bicycles on an Instagram giveaway, and because due to work and a couple health issues I haven't been riding much this year)....but I think I lost my balance and fell over to the "yeah, I'ma get one" side of tge fence. I feel the need to support them on this one, and that just means there's another decent bike in my quiver 😊✌️

      Their large frame is HUGE. The sizing they provide (what he shows from the website and the wheel placard don't match) are off. It is like they are missing a size. Their medium frame is identical in size to a Trek Marlin M/L Gen 3 (which is what I would ride). Their large frame is closer to most companies XL. I feel like they are missing a true large.

  • @MissingLinkMTB
    @MissingLinkMTB 11 місяців тому

    Vibe not so hot. My buddy has one. Even size for size, the frame doesn't fit the same as the Ridge. It's smaller. He's had some issues with his so far, to the point he took it back and got another. I'm sitting pretty on my Ridge though. Good to hear about the spare parts too, especially since we'll need the hangers at some point. If it's anything like my experience with Kent, parts will be quite affordable and arrive quickly.

    When you can get a descent bike and parts for it for a good price that's solid then it just may be worth adding a electric motor and save a lot of money building your own ebike.

    • @daniellarson3068
      @daniellarson3068 11 місяців тому

      Maybe, they can do that. They have the economy of scale on their side. They can buy in quantity for less than you can and make them fast on an assembly line. Then they can price it affordably. I am sure e-bike demand is way up there and they would sell like hotcakes.

  • @daniellarson3068
    @daniellarson3068 11 місяців тому

    Not in the immediate need of a bike, but this channel is so different, I watch it. This bike thing reminds me of history. Around the turn of the 20th century cars were expensive. They were hard to repair. There were no parts. They were for the rich. It was a little like those fancy carbon fiber bikes at the bike shop. Then Henry Ford came out with the every-man car, the model T. He sold millions. All those other cars are mostly forgotten. So - if Walmart keeps coming out with a few good bikes AND they provide parts and service, then they will have the Model-T of bikes. The bikes will do what people want. They may sell millions. However, I think they should have Schwinn build it as the Schwinn name has recognition in US like the Model T.

    @tylerkelly9258 11 місяців тому

    Hey, Kev. Have you noticed how different the sizing chart is from the wheel placard? It makes it confusing for a buyer. I replied in one of your other videos that I think there is a missing size or two. The size difference between the medium and large is huge. I think that they are missing an actual large or, like Trek, a medium large. I normally ride a large, but I had to move down to a medium. The Ridge medium is almost identical in size to the Trek Marlin M/L, which is my size.

    • @user-yo1pk4ky4k
      @user-yo1pk4ky4k 6 місяців тому

      I noticed the same thing how the sizing chart for OT Ridge is different from the wheel placard. The chart reads medium frame for people 5-3 to 5-8, and large frame for 5-9 to 6-2. In the local Walmart all they have are mediums and the wheel placards read something like "up to 6-0." I am 5-11 and looking for a MTB to ride mainly down desert dirt roads and not any hot-dogging down hills. Kev is 5-10 and says the medium fits him perfectly. Do you think a medium would fit me for mild riding? Thank you for any advice you can offer.

    Why is Kev wearing his Halloween costume? Thank you for acknowledging the Haters. They have no love for Walmart.

    I'm pissed that it's still months away for a small. If you're advertising 3 sizes then get 3 sizes to market at same time.

    My experience with Ozark Trail is good and bad. Ozark Trail isn't really a brand. It's a font and a logo. Their stuff is seasonal. Anything you get this season with "Ozark Trail" on it, you can't get it next season. I bought a double walled water bottle with Ozark Trails on it. The lid to the bottle broke the locking mechanism. You cannot buy a new lid or a whole new bottle.+ When I bought it in 2021, that's the deal they had in 2021. In 2022 when I wanted to replace it or buy a new lid for it, Walmart had completely dropped it.
    That is the fundamental problem when you buy a generic product with a stylized font and logo from a big corporation like Walmart. It's not really a brand, it's "branding." It's like going to store and buying a GE radio. GE hasn't made a radio in like 35 years. No parts. No service. Model no longer available. Total luck of the draw whether the new "GE radio" is any good because it has absolutely nothing to do with GE.
    This bike has absolutely nothing to do with Ozark Trail and absolutely nothing to do with Walmart. It's a generic bike (even if it's good) with the Ozark Trail branding on it.

    The Taiwan vs China direction this channel is taking is naive at best. 6061? seriously? Everybody has 6061, and strictly mainland China bikes use 7000 series aluminum on many occasions. There is something else going on beside bike products when that debate comes up.

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  11 місяців тому +1

      Exposure to products will show that Taiwan products are usually (but not always) superior to mainland China products. The reason is simple. Brands choose China to save money. And many more Chinese Mfgs are willing to go as low as the price will dictate. Taiwan has to meet a quality expectation to justify the increased cost.
      Typically, 7075 aluminum is only on more expensive bikes - at least that I’ve seen. And I can assure you that 6061 isn’t on every unlabeled bike. Further, I’ve said it many times that China is capable of making a quality product. I’m not sure why you tube that out
