Hello again to my Northern Neighbors from Central Florida! I’ve owned a trouble free 2016 Colorado Z71,4x4, V6, Ext Cab for the past 3yrs 6 months and 49,000 miles. More than half of those miles were while towing our 4,800 lbs, 24’ Travel Trailer all up and down the East Coast from Bar Harbor ME to Key West FL and as far west as the Texas Gulf Coast down to Corpus Christi and many interesting points in between, at a Cat Scale certified 10,800 lbs or so, that was handled very well and comfortable at all speeds and roads. On these trips we averaged about 13-15 mpg in the flats and 10-12 in the mountains, at the speed limits. As far as regular transportation and commuting we get an average of 17 mpg and on the highway around 24-26 mpg! Once again at the speed limits but with the cruise control when not towing. We did set an all time high of an astounding 32 mpg, at night on The Overseas Highway in the FL Keys at a steady 45 mph with the cruise control set, right after filling up then traveling over a section with very little traffic on a stretch of highway that covers 42 miles, I noticed the computer told me 33 mpg! That I just could not believe, so I pulled in to fill up at the next pump I found. Sure enough only 1.3 gals is what I could get on the second click for 42 miles!! Ok so now with all that said we came to the point where we needed to replace the Ext Cab with a Crew Cab as we finally both retired and need only one vehicle. So out we went to look at all the new trucks 1/2 ton and SUV,s that we could tow with. We both really love the look of the Gladiator, But was turned off by the actual driving dynamics on road, especially when towing! Nothing at all like the Colorado, definitely rode better off road, but we don’t go off road too often and when we do it’s on beaches and sandy areas! Plus the prices are outrageous! I was able to find a nice 2019 Colorado Crew Cab W/T, 4x4, V6, with everything we needed, like W/T Appearance Package, Convenience Package, Tow Package with coolers, hitch and Auto Locking Differential with Trailer Brake Control, the three available skid plates the Factory has available for dealer install from AEV, plus OnStar 4G LTE WIFI! That’s not available on any Gladiator under 50k! We got all that plus an 84 month 100,000 Bumper to Bumper warranty for an out the door price of just over 31k! There was nothing else with 4x4 and especially WIFI for another within 20K extra!
No matter the wheel base I'd still lift it. But the length is worth the trade off for the longer bed and towing. If someone wants a pure trail rig they should buy a wrangler. I need a truck and if that truck happens to be awesome off road.. great!
You should be able to lock the rear def in 4H if you have off-road + on and you hold down the traction control button for about 5 seconds. It will then allow you to lock the rear only.
You can lock the differential in 4 high new to the gladiator this year it is i believe the off road plus button that was put in that was requested from the Jeep community, used more for sand and such.
John thank you for your feedback. And Agree with you on waiting for that diesel. However I’m real curious to see if we see any big incentives over the next few months.
“When you lose contact you get stuck” -True, unless you have independent suspension, disconnected sway bars, 4lo & a rear locker, like the KL Cherokee Trailhawk. Once you unbolt the sway bars, all you really need is any two wheels on the ground and it goes.
Just found your channel and I like it! 😃 It was recommended because I watch OverlandBound 👍 Was just discussing these automatic sway bar disconnects 🤣 Would love these on my XJ!!! 🤣🤣🤣❤️🐞
One person's "flaws" are what another would call "optimization decisions". Everything's a tradeoff and nothing can be perfect for everything. My concern is that this is a Fiat.
Stock is enough... it can do the Rubicon trail already. Obviously that will make it more capable, but if you have a spotter and pick the right lines this truck is extremely capable.
Another great video Stephen. The Canadian price on the Rubicon is really hard to swallow. Even the lowest trim Sport model is 50k Canadian. I really like this vehicle but that's just too much.
I wanted one but got turned off by that price... i got a power wagon instead almost full load for just a little more that this thing would have been. We pay less than americans for the power wagon
Carlo Santin price will correct itself when the first bunch get sold off. Wrangler JL was the same way and now you can get pretty significant discounts on them in Canada. Close to 8-9 grand. So I am guessing same will be case in 12 months with gladiator.
Jeeping Down Under hope you don’t have to wait to long but the wait is worth it. Love Australia! What a beautiful country, will get there one day and drive on your awesome beaches.
The one thing with the breakover angle is that most people that will be going off-roading will put bigger tires. Which will increase their ground clearance.
You can't see it from the outside, it's inside the box with the electric motor attached on the sway bar. Engineering Explained has a video on it, though: ua-cam.com/video/OJLRAjRcN-k/v-deo.html
It's so much more. Turns off the license plate lights in reverse, disables seat chime, forces camera on + turn cam, disconnecting sway bar at any speed and any drive status, can make whatever light you want a DRL, can enable 2wd Low Range, you can make your standard lighting into chase lighting for added trail safety... but yeah the locker itself is worth the $330.
The bad break over angle isn’t a “flaw” because you know about it before even buying it. If you want a great off-roader with three good angles get a Wrangler. If it’s more important that your off-roader can do pickup stuff than go on the more difficult trails get a Gladiator.
And willingness to sustain body damage. I chatted with someone up there and he said he watched a full size do it, it got some nice new custom bodywork from the rocks
Even with only the undersized 33” wheels the Gladiator has a better break over rating then the 4 Runner and about the same as Power Wagon. Put the 35” or 37”s, it becomes a monster because breakover isn’t as much of an issue.
Rubicons have torsen lsd as well as e lockers so when ur going fast in 4hi there really is no need to loc the diff. Jeeps puts the e locker in there because with a torsen lsd if u lift a tire and theres no resistance on an axle shaft it becomes open, so its like the best of both worlds lsd for control and ability to steer and locker for high articulation rock climbing in 4low.
Love this new Jeep but trying to convince myself it will happily replace my Ram1500. Has anyone gone from a big Ike crew cab pickup to one of these. And any regrets. Thx guys. JJ
@@aaron5222 the point I'm making is people are saying the gladiator is too big to offroad and that you need a smaller vehicle when there are in deed much larger off roaders than this

Not sure why you would ever want or need to lock the rear diff in 2WD (though Jeep should allow it and not dictate when you can use what features unless it would cause damage or potential damage) because you first use 2WD, if you need more traction you use 4WD then you start locking axles. First the centre diff lock, Ideally the front next (it’s proven that helps better than rear even though makes it harder to steer because it’s easier to pull than push a vehicle) then lastly you lock up rear as well. It’s annoying Jeep only allow rear locker or front and rear. Front only should be an option also.
I wonder if most manufacturers only allow lockers in 4Lo is because VSC that brakes only one side would essentially brake 3 wheels with the locker engaged that would be dangerous at high speeds. My Toyota is like that too. Same thing for the front stabilizer bar. Nobody wants to roll over at high speed. While the extra long wheelbase is a detriment in more situations there are a few times that it actually helps too depending on the situation. Certainly more stable at high speeds but could be a nightmare trying to turn around on narrow trail. My Toyota's wheelbase is 106 inches and I've battered, bent and ripped my front license plate holder stuffing the front over small fir trees trying to turn around on narrow overgrown trails. You'd have to back out with the Gladiator. Not an easy task with the side mirrors folded in because of the brush thought the rear camera would help a lot if clean.
@@EGGINFOOLS I realize some do allow it including the Raptor. They probably disable the VSC systems also. Some disable the traction control and ABS too. I was only proposing one reason they might not allow you to engage a locker in 4Hi.
I wonder how reliable that sway bar disconnect will be and the whole truck as a whole. I still think a Tacoma is a better truck and I am biased because i already know how good Toyota is from ownership.
I just traded in a 2008 rubicon with sway bar disconnect no problems in the 10 years and 165k miles I had it. have heard from a rental place in moab that the sway bar system fails on some rentals because they are submerged in water daily for like 3 years.
Assuming it's the same electronic swaybar disconnect that JK Rubicons came with, it is garbage. It's not a sealed unit, so the internals get damaged if you actually take the vehicle offroad and go through mud. I replaced my the electronic swaybar disconnect on my wife's 2015 Rubicon JKU with a a manual sway bar disconnect. I run a Currie anti-rock swaybar on my 2007 JKU.
@@dns711 No doubt that would suck pretty bad. I will be honest, I drive a 13 Tacoma and it is not perfect. The most glaring problem is the shitty OEM disc brakes...the rotors warp easy, so i use hi performance rotors and pads. The other issue, the OEM rear springs are garbage...ad them replaced earlier this year. So, overall, not a bad truck at all at nearly 160 000 kms and 6 years.
The MAJOR problem is taking a $50000-$75000 truck offroading.... who other then the wealthy would risk a rollover in a offroad track with a $75000 vehicle... these little romps in the mud you can take almost any 4x4 1/4 of the price. Jeep is pricing themself out of what they are known for. Jeep is turning into parking lot warriors. P.s. have owned 4 different jeeps..
I paid 26k for my fully loaded H3T with 82k miles, got 60 more ib-ft of torque, 15 more horsepower, 3 inches less of wheelbase, better approach, departure, and breakover angles (when you pull out the wrench and adjust the Tbars, an easy and free job) you still get removable doors, you get a vehicle that is actually proportioned properly, and while the jeep may have a mechanical link to the Tcase, if DOES NOT have a mechanical link to the transmission, while the H3T does, in fact, have an actual link to its transmission, you also get superior trail capabilities thanks to the ifs suspension, and before you bash the plastic interior, when's the last time you felt comfortable drilling through a leather interior to mount gauges, hmm? I guess the whole point of this rant is that the gladiator should of been better, but was not, I mean, for the price of the gladiator, you could buy the H3T for general fun and capable off roading, but a mahindra roxor or an old jeep for that special jeep vibe, and then still have money left for upgrades to both of them.
I'm in the same province. How can you say, "hydro line", when "hydro" means water (a Canadian thing) and "zee" is the U.S. way of saying "zed" for the last letter of the alphabet? Pretending to be from the U.S. (while having an Ontario license plate), and a using strictly Canadian term. No other country says "hydro line" or uses the scientific term for water to refer to electrical.
You can buy a brand new diesel ZR2 for $42,000. I haven't seen a Rubicon Gladiator down here in Texas for less than $62,000. I own a diesel ZR2 and love it, I certainly don't see the Gladiator as being $20,000 better.
As a fan of TFL since basically the beginning I sometimes offer some hopefully constructive criticism as a push to up your game. So here is my proposal. First - The cut between the open and the video was awesome, the open was good but it's missing something. I of course know who this is in the video, but no one else does in the first part of the video unless the looked up to the left for the 3 seconds his name was on screen. I would like to see an open where the presenter either A. offers up their name and/or B. the editor puts up the name of the presenter smack in the middle lower part of the screen and it's up for longer then 3 seconds (too short). If there are multiples, get them all in there in some how. And to the Roman & editors: I suggest coming up with a TFL brand segment introduction which takes maybe 10 seconds or so. It would offer up a cool channel theme song, names of the folks involved, channels in the portfolio, and possibly channel sponsors. And lastly to Stephen - Dood, when you wear the boots we know it's about to get real! Thanks for kicking a##! Love your energy! I think you are doing lots of this thing mostly on your own, sometimes with a helper, and I appreciate all of your hard work in front of the screen and at the desk!
If your doing 40 mph + in heavy snow it's nice, I spend a lot of time in northern Michigan winters, I prefer lockers with 4hi, I've never experienced any issue with understeer.
I don't want to give away the store at my expense but 2 door truck/jeep is definitely do able bronze at $37k, the 4 door perfect out of box silver may hve to b 4door only. As for jeeps we don't need 2 door any more so mass produce the 4 door..Or hve a scramp 2door w/large trunk Bronze & 4door silver product same chassis. It's all about making best freaking product at vol & then hving upgrades ppl want straight from factory or after market easy later on. I don't think 2doors will sell but we will see but same length. I won't subsidize 2 door trucks or jeeps. No profit selling & no market over seas, seems pntless. I would only put 3.6 or diesel or hybrid diesel or elev super charger no tiny engine beach jeep bs.

I'll never be able to get over that rear overhang.
Drive an old Suburban on the trails for a month. You'll get over the Gladiator's overhang in no time.
I love TLC REVIEWS but I like look to you for that real life TEST💪💪💪💪💪
the ZR2 looks to be a bit more offroad capable, especially the bison
Gladiator is great!
Yes! Make more videos of the gladiator!
perfect job. I think the gladiator need the eco diesel engine. thank you dude.
The Elmer’s need there own channel. Or is there one? Sorry Roman 😁
It’s called Truck King
Could you run 35" tires without a lift in the Gladiator?
I love watching your content!
Love when you get the rubber boots on!
Perfect video
You went the same speed on the second time thru the hydro line even though you said you were going to go slower to actually test it
Not hard to go thru mud puddle when it has a solid rock bottom lol!
@@dns711 Interesting
@@mikefoehr235 I know many off-roaders who have had their electronic swaybar disconnects get stuck in the unlocked position.
P.s. have owned 4 different jeeps..
great video man! you are the best reviewer,
only thing I can say that's good about gladiator is it has solid axles its not very good at being 4x4 or as what a pickup is used for
Waiting for the bronco pickup
I love my Jeep Gladiator rubicon
Yes , I love this car this option , but sting gray color .
🤟🤟 shorts and boootttttsssss my dude!
I like the new Wrangler, but I'll probably choose the Gladiator.
Shark Bait definitely, there is just something about it
The best reviewer on TFL. Nice job Stephen
would love to have this Jeep, but too much for my budget :(
Great video. I don’t think anything will beat your 4Runner review though. 4RUNNER!
nice truck but way to expensive, one near me is 56,000 and change????????????????
Damn! I paid less for my Tundra trd off road
It’s not an off-roader, its a pickup truck. Bring back a TJ sized Jeep and the 4.0
I'm in the same province.
Great job. Love your videos especially the one where you beat the crap out of the blue 4 runner.
Price of it is crazy
7:30 Engage Duck Mode! ;) Fun review. :)
I love this guy
Why don’t you test the ford raptor?
You can buy a brand new diesel ZR2 for $42,000. I haven't seen a Rubicon Gladiator down here in Texas for less than $62,000. I own a diesel ZR2 and love it, I certainly don't see the Gladiator as being $20,000 better.
They discounting those zr2 a decent amount?? I just built a base zr2 diesel on the website and it was 49k??
I take that back built one base crew cab dmax 46k black package adds like 3k lol thats how i ended up at 49.
@@Michael_ryan91 dealer discounts are really nice ya know?
Where is this location in Ontario?
33" falkens??? I thought it came with duratracs?
The Wrangler does.
@@EGGINFOOLS no, typically not Duratracs from Jeep on the Wrangler either.
@@RyanRKJ I know the wrangler Rubicon and the gladiator Rubicon have different tires. What does the wrangler come with?
@@RyanRKJ Ahh! BFGs.
Whats a break over?
I was a huge fan of the gladiators, but after you just showed you can't lock the diffs, unless your in 4lo, that's a big drop in points to me.
If your doing 40 mph + in heavy snow it's nice, I spend a lot of time in northern Michigan winters, I prefer lockers with 4hi, I've never experienced any issue with understeer.
@@kyleloew432 you can buy a chip to do it.
This is the off-roading we do in the south not that rock climbing shit
That is not what I would call getting the wheels in the air. That thing needs to be 2 doors
That needs pop up camper.
Technically its biggest flaw is that its not a Toyota ! :-)
