    FINALLY someone has the courage to record some sound samples of audio equipment so that we can compare! YES It's possible to understand differences, because we are already "calibrated" to the audio source we have. NO it's not ideal, I know, but yet it's better than someone saying "this one is easy listening" OR "Smooth" OR "Warm". It helps, but recording it is better.
    Thank you!

    Good review, it was nice to hear to flat response of the ATH-m70x in comparison to the M50x which seems warmer. I kind of like a u shape in the frequency response, bass and treble a bit elevated with the ATH-M50x. I was always told a flat frequency response was the goal but in the real world listening the average person would prefer the M50x.

    The reviewer doesn't realize that the silver parts on the 70s are aluminum. That means they have about 50 times as much metal as the 50s, so are more premium construction. You don't need all that flexibility if you're keeping them in the studio and having the earcups move so much will wear on the wiring more over time. The 70s have a greater frequency range, but don't have the mids scooped, so the 50s actually don't reproduce as much bass as the 70s. Totally amateur review.

  • @videomaniac108

    I have both the M50x and the M70x and use both, for different purposes. For general listening and for monitoring my electric bass when I'm playing, the M50x does just fine. When I need to do critical listening and I need to get the fine details of the sound, I use the M70x. Because the M70x has a more even frequency response, I get a more accurate picture of the mix, I would not mix with the M50x. When I want to experiment and refine my fingerstyle technique on my right-hand when playing bass I use the M70x, so that I can hear the subtle differences in plucking and muting the strings.

      +TheRowancave I don't think I can say I agree with this statement because it's almost trivial. The reason being many headphones, especially bass heavy headphones such as the Vmoda M100's or Sony MDR Xb 950 BT's are designed specifically FOR electronic music. So, if I have headphones that are aiming for one type of sound and genere, I'm going to use that sound or genre to show them off, just as if I'm entering a talent show and am a guitar player, I'm not going to bring in a drum set and show my skills with the drums. In addition, electronic music is generally much easier to make sound good, where as traditional instruments can be more of a challenge, especially on a large speaker system such as my RCF 712's and Danley subs

    • @keithscull8288
      @keithscull8288 8 років тому

      Yeah you have a fair point too I suppose because the M50's are supposed to be treble and clarity cannons so for this yeah it definitely sounds like a headphone should should be expected to handle traditional instruments well! That said I currently have my bass cannons and am actually looking for mid/high cannons for a really CRISP headphone right now, preferably with a wide sound stage, sounds like you've heard both, you'd prefer the m50's? I also want to know what the Audio Technica Es10's sound like

    Lets conclude:
    The M50x's are by far the best headphones in that price range. They are so good that they can compete with headphones which are double the price from other brands.
    The M70x's are even better but also way more expensive. Therefore they already are able to compete with all the super high end products while being really affordable in comparison.
    Lets conclude the conclusion:
    Audio Technica is a god brand (I didn't mistype)
    The reason why they are so affordable btw. is because Audio Technica barely does any marketing and focus on research therefore, which is also the reason why not so many people know them.
    At least thats a big win for their little amount of consumers.

      Not if you're planning on using your headphones primarily for media consumption. The m70x isn't really meant to be like an upgrade from the m50x; they are certainly more for monitoring and sound mixing and what not. I'd say just grab the m50x's, especially since you can pick them up for like $100 on Groupon. Totally worth it.

    • @TrinoElrich
      @TrinoElrich 8 років тому

      well... I guess you could say the m70's are geared for a much more neutral signature. so if that's what you're all about, then in that regard they are certainly an upgrade. They're also lighter and have slightly softer ear pads so they're overall more comfortable. It really all comes down to what exactly you want out of your headphones.

      My recommendation would be to go to a Guitar Center with a music sample you like and give a listen on both. I have both and if I only had the M50x I would keep it for general listening. For hearing the finest details in sound, like string microphonics on mic'd acoustic guitars or brushes and cymbals on a drum kit you would do better with the M70x.

    I bought both of these headphones. The m70x does have better resolution than the m50x, but the m70x bass is not as heavy as the m50x. I think video's 3-minute and 47-second test still has some limitations. On the one hand, it USES mono music to test, on the other hand, the track used for testing is not complicated enough. (sorry for using the translation software)

    The m70x are for accuracy, detail and wider soundstage. The m50x for people who want to colour the songs to sound differently from how they were meant to sound. As someone who loves electronic music the m70x will have PLENTY of punch if the song was designed that way. The m50x on the other hand over emphasises bass therefore distorting other instruments and muddying the bass detail. The m70x are studio headphones for people who want to hear songs the way they were made. The m50x are studio headphones that are quite immature and suit the tastes of those who want a large amount of bass whether it was designed to sound that way or not

    A sound test? Really? Do you not realize that there is no way to hear a headphone without wearing it? In no way can a microphone positioned near a can pickup sound the same way as human ears! Headphones are made to be worn on the head! Without the closure, and seal, there will be almost no bass. Not to mention encoding, as well as UA-cam compression and bandwidth and what your viewers are listening to the video on. Gosh.

    • @eli72481
      @eli72481 8 років тому

      Xalvio Yes on a video on UA-cam. But it still isn't close to how they would actually sound. What we are hearing is how our headphones reproduce the compressed sound that the microphone reproduced from the headphones. I mean, we wouldn't hear any bass anyways, because the headphones are meant to be worn with a seal around the ear and with the ear and driver very close. It's not close at all. Now, a frequency response graph from headphone.com might help us to figure out how they sound, but doing the sound test that he does is simply a waste of time. Have a great day!

      +Theodore Joherb in short man, i love my m50x headphones. I listen to a wide variety of music from country to rap to classical, and i haven't felt at any time that the headphones were lacking clarity or punch. The drivers are easy to push that listening to music on my phone is enjoyable but hooking them up to my desktop really brings them to life. The flexibility of the ear cups is great. One wouldn't think that it's such a big deal but being able to rotate them 180° is really convenient. The 3 supplied cords to connect into the headphone jack are nice but i really would have preferred a thicker gauge especially on the 10ft wire but they get the job done. The pleather ear pads are soft and comfortable but after maybe an hour, your ears will be sweating. What I did is I bought some replacement velvet ear pads and they have taken my listening experience to another level.
      I have no experience on beats but I've always heard that they are just a marketing ploy. I've never tried them or have wanted to. So i couldn't say anything about them.
      But you can't go wrong with the M50xs. hope this helps

      Theodore Joherb easily great value for the money. I'm not too sure what you are referring to when you say heavy. If you are talking about weight, no they are pretty comfortable weight and if you are talking about sound, they are on the heavier side but it isn't so over done that is is annoying. it's a good mix of low and high's.

    I know the sound comparison is flawed doesn't really say anything about the headphones, but I appreciate it anyway. I dunno. It just feels good to have some shred of understanding about how they sound instead of just hearing EVERY OTHER UA-camR OUT THERE describe them with audiophile jargon and artsy fartsy words!
    Seriously, though. good job. great review!

    Great f*ckin' video dude! Great unbiased analysis, and the sound test is genius, I wish other reviewers would do the same, the sound comparison test demonstrates which headphone is suitable for casual listeners (M50X) Vs a producer/sound engineer/composer (M70X). I prefer the M50X's due to the warmer sound, and I don't ever think that the M70X's are worth almost double the price of the M50X's, especially when there are monitoring headphones that perform as good or even better than the M70X's for half the prices. If the M70X's came noise cancellation, then ...mmmmaybe I'd call say the price is reasonable, they would have to possess Bose like Noise Cancellation to win me over. In my opinion, the M70X, might as well of been called the "M50X II" or the "M50X Deuce", or the, well you get my drift, they're just the M50X's with less bass, slightly more clarity, and arthritis on the joints.

    *_ALUMINUM; NOT PLASTIC!_* Love ya, Edward, but that's a big miss... I have both of these, and the 70's are very accurate, to the point of being a little bit too much - "uh, hey; look in the mirror" type of accurate. Meaning, if the source equipment or material aren't that good --- neither will the sound be. I have ~20 sets of cans, from about ~$79.00 to $1K+++. These are a SOLID step above the M50's, but like you said: if ya got the M50's, don't feel like you *_gotta_* have these... They're _BOTH_ really great. Keep on rockin' Eddie B!

    would u say the ATH-M70x is an upgrade from M50x? Cuz I've had the M50x for quite awhile now but the left ear happens to be slightly broken since I have to knock on it a few times to make it sound just as loud as the right ear. Plus I think a song that helps really show speakers sound quality best is "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana so you can focus on each instrument clearly (thats how I determine how good of sound quality headphones or sound systems have)

    I've owned three pairs of ATH-M50 -- but not the X variant. 1st pair non-removable spiral cord. 2nd & 3rd pair are the BT version (One for home and one for work). Out of testing 30+ headphones before selecting the M50 I had choosen $50 to $500 price range and the M50 had the best sound (to my ears). YMMV. The price of $170 is solid enough for my pocket book.

Should I get the M50x, the M70x or the Vmodas m100 again? Is the M70x response really more flat or... actually inverted? Based on your demo, I'd find it hard to believe someone would mix and equalize that song to sound like that, but then maybe they know they're making it for non-flat listening. It's like a paradox. XD

  • @ArkhayaAratia1999
    @ArkhayaAratia1999 7 років тому

    Even if you can't hear it properly, mostly based on reviews they are good in sound quality. What you should check is the graph charts which show it's frequency on the high mid and low. Which would help you more to know what gives better base or is completely flat, like the m70x

    • @pipeqez911
      @pipeqez911 2 роки тому +1

    I find my M50x to be better than this skinny one(M70x), it Probably has lighter weight as we can see in its build quality (more plastic), but still what people want is descent build and sound quality for affordable price. Also, i love how M50x produce base and warm detail of mids/highs.
    Awesome Comparison. Keep it up.

    Pretty sure the people saying the m50x sounds better are just defending their purchase... in this particular test its obvious the 70's are better ( I have neither, so nothing to defend ) Though it also sounded like they may have placed the mic incorrectly on the m50x so it sounded wrong.

    The trouble is, the ATs are all designed to be studio monitors. They all have neutral sound and tight bass, but not heavy bass. If you really want bass, you're better off with actual DJ
    headphones. I bought a pair of the AT M20xs, I like them, but they aren't that comfortable for long sessions, and they still don't sound as great as my planar headphones, or even
    my Koss PortaPros. I'd use the ATs for monitoring, mixing, tracking, radio use, broadcast, and maybe webcasting stuff, sooner than I'd use them for music listening for pleasure.
    I bought a pair of the M50xs and returned them, I found the sound to be very harsh and with harsh, unpleasant highs, and hardly any bass.
