I love math, I love science, I love the ocean. I’ve wanted to be a marine biologist for so many years now, since learning it was a thing. I’m a senior in high school, already accepted to a university that has a great focus in marine biology. My current plan is to major in marine biology. I’m worried I’m making the wrong choice; that I’ll regret becoming a marine biologist. I think it’s a combination of people around me who laugh at the idea of me wanting to become a marine biologist, and the fear of how little job opportunities there are. In a perfect world, I would love to study sharks, but to start I’m not picky about where this career takes me as log as it’s marine biology. I guess whatever happens, happens! I’m excited to start studying, but scared as well.

hi! I have the same fears and doubts about marine biology and the careers and all. Ideally, I would also loveeeeee to study sharks!!! They're what made me get into marine biology as well. I'm a junior in high school so I haven't applied to any uni's yet, but I was wondering if we could get in contact to talk about this all? if that's alright

    • @emilymccraw4336

University student here. Here's the thing; if you want a lot of money, don't be a marine biologist. If you don't want to learn new things all the time, don't be a marine biologist. If you don't want to put in a ton--and I mean a TON--of work in subjects you may or may not hate *cough* calculus *cough* then don't do it. But if you want to volunteer and intern and get your foot in the door, put in the work, make connections and devote a ton of time and effort into your education and career, then go for it. The key to getting around the lack of opportunity is to make opportunities for yourself. Most research labs/aquariums/etc. are more likely to hire you if they know your name. So, volunteer, intern, study, and push yourself, and I believe you will be fine.

I know marine biologists who have used their qualifications and skills in other areas like education, art, community initiatives, volunteer management and biophysics... even if you pursue marine biology and realize it's not completely your thing or it just doesn't work out, you can find relevant roles that you didn't realize were an option or even that you might enjoy!

@@talithahiggs1912 Perhaps something in the conservation and activism field might be more your cup of tea. Marine Biology is a science, so there is maths and science involved in large parts of it.
There are many routes to be involved in marine wildlife and conservation. If science isn't your thing look for other avenues.

Im in a general biology college course. It is a VERY rigorous course. I have to read and understand a textbook, prepare for tests over each chapter as well as unit tests every few chapters, take notes while the instructor speaks like an auctioneer to turn in for a grade, attend tutoring, attend study groups, and more... Just for lecture!
In addition to the lecture, I also have to take a lab course at the same time. I have to take pre-lab tests before lab, keep a lab notebook, read and summarize weekly lab procdures, complete weekly post-lab projects. All of the lab stuff I have to do on my own or with classmates. The instructor doesn't really teach lab.
There is more stuff but I don't want to spend an hour writing a youtube comment.
Oh! And great video, as always, Maria!

Hi! I’m from Czech Republic, I’m 14 years old and I wanna become a marine biologist in my future.. I love science, chemistry, physics, geography and English.. I love the ocean and nature in all possible ways. But I have a few problems.. In our country is not an ocean or sea, so I’ll have to travel a loooot and everyone is making fun of me and becoming a marine biologist..I don’t know, why is that soo funny, I just don’t get it.. I don’t wanna do a job, that I’ll be bored of. I already found a college of biology and there’s also a marine biology so yaaay! I’ll be happy, if y’all will give me any advices.. bye😀

Don’t listen to the people who try bullying you, you are much better then them. Don’t give up on marine biology there are many things you could do heaps of research online or online course or volunteer. Don’t be scared to get out there and help where you can

I’m only 12 and I have been interested in fish and everything about oceans and recently I’ve been thinking about options for my GCSE’s next year and I am trying to find out what options I need to choose to be a marine biologist

you will definitely need biology and chemistry GCSEs, so I would say pick triple science if you feel ok with that, and geography is also seen as useful for a lot of uni courses :)

GCSEs aren’t to restrictive- I took triple science, geography , and 2 art based subjects and all the Unis I applied to were fine with that! As long as you have a good understanding of biology it’s all good! Xx

    Hello,
First of all i hope you read this comment and give me an advice. I currently study Biology in Turkey. I thought i wanted to be a marine biologist but i actually dont know anymore. I like ocean yes but i might end up collecting plankton analysing same things that scientist done before. I dont want to do unimportant things . Many of my teachers said it might be not like you think (marine biology). Im now thinking dropping school and studying another field. If you answer this comment please be honest about it . To be honest i am a gay person so i want to live in US,Canada etc im not sure if i want to study marine biology just because i want to get out of Turkey and live in USA. I force myself to study biology. I guess i dont like biology i dont know anyting anymore please helpp

I Max. To become a marine biologist you should definitely be passionate about it. It is a difficult job to have if you do not like it. So if you do not like Biology at all maybe it is not the best for you, and you might find it hard to work in this field. I am sure that there are other careers that will allow you to go where you want to. You have to understand why it is that you are studying marine biology and if this is what you really want to do. If you do not like it, then maybe start looking in other directions, try attending courses on other subjects and understand what you like. I wish you the best of luck! =)

@@Seamemaria Thank you, but i have still one question. When a person works in academia (in any university) wont that person get a good payment? I often see biologist/marine biologist complain about their payment and work hours. When a person in university teaching and reasearching, doesnt that person get a good salary? and how can i stay in the university that i studied ? (Masters for USA etc)
