    ABOUT ME
    Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. I started posting some of my work on instagram and the rest is history. My work is inspired by all the things that I am passionate about. Ballet, travel, graphic design, color and finding a world of beauty in all facets of everyday life. I hope you'll join me in this UA-cam journey as I take you through all the tips, tricks and trade secrets I've gathered throughout the years. I hope I can teach you some of what I know, help you discover your creative voice and I hope you enjoy this Channel!

    Funny! I also have an A Gallo DIY plan. Just like your DIY project, my plan also eschews buying from Jackson’s or the A Gallo website. Instead, my plan involves travelling aaaaaaallll the way to Assisi, visiting the physical A Gallo store and buying a not-so-short list of supplies from them. I’m almost ready! I’m just missing the visa, flight tickets, hotel booking, funds to book the journey and funds to buy A Gallo art supplies. Other than that, I am all set. 🤣🤣

      Pay 🤣.
      Seriously though, how cool would it be to meet up in Assisi!
      I day dream that I would go there, buy a dot card, a swatch card kit and a brush then sit at a charming cafe to try them out. I might even use the dot card to paint en plein air around Assisi. Having tried the paints and the brush, I would then visit the A Gallo store again to buy the paints that I like, more brushes, porcelain pallet(s), accessories and maybe paper. I have a very lofty, poetic and romantic notion of such a trip, and somehow the sky-high price tag is not bringing me down to reality. This is definitely one trip I’d make once I get the (financial) opportunity.

    Such a fun and sassy video!
    I will confess I bought A Gallo's naturele pallette, basically on the understanding that it was my one major watercolour purchase for the year as I upgrade to pro grade. (It sits as a compliment to my primarily W&N custom 24 pan which has my split primaries, some funky granulating mixes, and my beloved Smalt Blue hue and perylenes).
    I've been delighted with the A Gallo pallette so far, but I think you highlight a great point that sometimes we can find inspiration externally then turn to what we already have a recreate it, rediscovering old gems in the process.
    I want to watch more of your vids after this one!

    After watching this video I was inspired to paint with this very palette. As I did, I saw that I had written the pigments of copper blue so that I could try to recreate it since it took a year to get it… it’s gorgeous and should I run out…..
    Coincidentally, I am in the process of creating a single pigment palette right now, which is looking absolutely amazing btw….and I found that I had PB 15:3, two forms. sennelier turq and Cendre blue. One is mixed with pg7 and the other with white. So I mixed the two with a bit more white and py3 and not only did I create copper blue but so many other scrumptious shades of turquoise!! Blue to green lighter or richer with more or less white.
    That did it. My single pigment palette will have 2 exceptions because of the plethora of turquoise options that result. I highly recommend the exercise and adding these to your palette if you love turquoise as much as I do! Next to permanent rose pv15 it’s my favorite. You’re welcome. 😄

    Wow, that is A LOT of paint! I have maybe twenty tubes of watercolor in my entire house and I felt a little guilty for having so many. Buying what I can afford when I can afford it, I wonder how long it would take me to re-create this duplicate palette, which is insanely gorgeous.

    • @Pointebrush
      @Pointebrush  Рік тому +8

      It most definitely is a lot of paint (and this is just scratching the surface 🙈). It comes from decades of collecting and buying for my business and for my clients. Some people collect coins or postage stamps. I collect watercolors 🤣 But in terms of duplicating, I think a lot of these colors are really good staples. You don't need them all but ultramarine, yellow ochre, quin rose and sap green for example are good solid foundational colors

    • @landunderwave9850
      @landunderwave9850 Рік тому +4

      @@Pointebrush Oh, yeah, fantastic foundation colors! For sure! I don’t have a sap green yet, but that’s on my list. I guess I’m in a weird category-totally not professional, but I have little watercolor obsessions. Granulation is one. And I was so mix-happy with W&N cerulean blue + one of my PR101s (whoops!), I had to cut myself off because cerulean blue is so expensive. (I live in Oz until July (probably) and I look forward to less expensive supplies back in the US.) I think the next one I have to get is a Schmincke potter’s pink. 💰💰💰 My other great watercolor love is high-flow paints like QOR. I just love watching the colors drop into the water and spread out over cold press texture. And my seven-year-old likes to paint with black, so our collection (if I’m honest, it’s not my collection anymore) contains a lamp black, a lunar black, and an indigo. We are oddballs, maybe. But we have fun! Also, I counted my tubes and I have 30 instead of twenty. I dunno, though, I could get a little obsessed over this palette here in the video. So beautiful! *swoon*

      @maryhazlett Рік тому +5

      @@landunderwave9850 I just ordered Rosa Gallery. A reviewer here loves Qor. But she reviewed Rosa and loves them more. They flow, and for artist grade, not expensive. Aussie Red Gold is actually the same as Arancione. They both use the same pigments. The history of that paint - as far as I know - actually goes back in time and space to the very, very, very distant island of - Australia. From what I understand Spectrum Art (or Art Spectrum, I can never remember their name) were the first to make this paint mix, inspired by Australia, naturally. Daniel Smith then either imitated them or bought the recipe from them, not sure which. And I have no idea how A Gallo pops into this story, but they somehow do. The end 😂

Right now, I am waiting for Pietra Rosa, Copper Blue, and Morellone to arrive in the mail. I've waited months for those colors. I don't have the selection of colors you do, even so, it wouldn't have occurred to me to do what you did. And Assissi! Bob and I visited there in 2014 before I was into watercolor. What a beautiful place. Sigh...

    Loved your post! I have stopped myself lately from buying anything more by looking at the colors and the pigments and asking myself whether I have something similar already. Especially a pallet where it may be the combo that was put together that has enchanted me and not the individual colors. The only one that it seems I must have is that Aussie Gold. Yummy.

    THANK YOU for sharing your palette with us!
    I have most pf the colours but noticed you missed to share one of the three colours after you had enough of all the beige and brown colours.
    At 6:05 and on in the video timeline you mentioned that you added 3 colours but only shared the two: W&N Rich Perylene Violet and M. Graham Quin. Rose. Which was the third??
    . I had added all the watercolours you named to a list I made and when I counted I only had 23. So I am missing a colour from the three I noticed in the video. Please let me know which it os?

    I have never heard of this brand before but am curious about it now. I generally paint with Qor or Daniel Smith. I do have some Lukas, Holbein, Turner, Mission Gold, and some various handmade paints to support small businesses. Out of them all, Qor is my favorite. How does A Gallo compare to any of these?

    You’re too much. You really made me laugh! From someone who has the real McCoy, I think your palette is going to be better; the Galló is much too subtle. I mean each color is subtle. Gorgeous for landscapes, but it didn’t work for my modern botanicals. That’s just for me, though. I’ve even wondered if I don’t know ho to apply the colors properly. Btw,,I love the way you store your palettes. Could we have another tutorial on storing art supplies? You are so very inventive. And hilariously dramatic, I might add.

    I'm going to be the outlier and say that I'm somewhat disappointed with this. Yes, duping with what you have is great, especially if something is out of your budget. There's nothing wrong with that, and it can be inspirational and freeing, as you've clearly shown. But I feel it's important to give Aline Gallo her proper due for curating and creating hand mulled paints that are environmentally friendly (no lead, cadmium, cobalt, mercury etc), no fillers, with attention to historic pigments and practices that expand our awareness of watercolor as a medium. Her pigments are also mostly specially sourced.
    I have A. Gallo paints, as well as the brands you've used for dupes, and there is no comparison for me. Maybe in approximating the color, yes, sort of, but not in how the paints lay down and their workability ..... the unique quality the A. Gallo paints have can't be replicated. Each brand has its' own unique and valuable qualities. A. Gallo is a watercolor artist and a paint maker, and I think we should honor her creation and contribution to the medium, and understand what the expense is for, being careful not to dismiss it only as a "luxury" brand because of the pricing. The shipping is reasonable actually and offset with a coupon code. I only wish you had highlighted and honored her incredible collection and body of work, rather than just noting the expense. Generally I'm a fan of your channel and work, just so you know.

      Hi Vati! Oh no! Sorry the video didn't come across well. I think I was more coming from the perspective of sharing my own personal experience and what I did in this moment of penny pinching, than any kind of PSA or brand review on A Gallo. Admittedly, I have never tried her watercolors so can't speak for the quality and profile of the paints themselves. I most definitely will be ordering a set from her when the time is right and sharing my thoughts because as you said, this is not the same thing as an A Gallo palette, it was just a way of mimicking a colorway that I saw and liked. Thanks for stopping by and voicing your thoughts!

      @@Pointebrush I understand. The video was fun, and I'm glad you got a nice palette. I duped the Mind of Watercolor M Graham palette (but he didn't artisanally create the paints) mostly from my Mission Gold Pure Pigment set so I could follow with his mixing tutorials. You will be blown away by A. Gallo paints when you can get hold of some. I particularly like the Signature 1 set, a great mixing palette with some special colors (Notturno & Harbor Blue). She also includes a synthetic Tintoretto brush in each set, I think a nice mop brush in that Naturale 24!

      @@PointebrushI think you came off just fine. I agree that while you did an admirable job subbing due to necessity…very ingenious!!, A Gallo can’t be replaced. I agree with vita on that point but I think it was many of the comments that slanted the message like vita thought. I didn’t think you did that at all. You just wanted your naturelle palette! Imitation is the highest flattery, as they say 😙 don’t worry dear Margot. We know you would never disrespect like this. Truly 🩵

    This is good. More art you tubers need to encourage viewers to use what they have instead of telling them to buy thus and that. One art haul after another. Honestly I am sick of them by now. There is no need to buy more of a color similar one shade lighter or darker of what we might already have. So what if its not all from the same brand. I GET 2 1/2 HALF PANS OUT OF A ML. WATERCOLOR TUBE.
    AND YOUR LOOKS JUST AS NICE AS THE ONE FROM A. GALLO.
