Fab...we were on the ferry to Rosslare from Fishguard on 1st August and came back on 8th. Had a lovely week in Ireland ...the ferry trips were good but bit boring...never mind we enjoyed our safe trip to Ireland and back...a real experience as I had never been on the ferry before...thank you Stenalink 👍👍
I made this crossing on 13 August 1979, during the storm that resulted in the Fastnet yachting disaster. I remember seeing armchairs fall over in the lounge and frightened-looking crew members struggling to walk as the ferry rolled at least 45 degrees repeatedly. There was one particular roll that came very close to capsizing us - I was a child at the time, and it was absolutely terrifying to hear adult passengers screaming in fear. We made it to Fishguard with not much delay, but I really don't think the ferry should have sailed in those conditions.
I’ve never known Stena use a brand new ship on this route, I think new ships are used on the prime routes in Scandinavia and Fishguard/Rosslare has the “hand me downs.” In the old days there were at least two ferries from Fishguard and I also recall a third service, ferry destinations were Cork, Dublin and Rosslare. The ships were terrible British Rail old tubs, St David and St Patrick. As a child I remember cars being transferred onto the ship by crane. At Rosslare there were three rail services, Cork, Dublin and Limerick and since fecking Tory rail privatisation there are no direct rail services to London which I believe there had been since the ferry service opened, probably operated by GWR. A number of years ago I argued fiercely with the GWR train information service, based in India, the lady told me that to get to my desired Irish destination I would have to travel via Hollyhead and to Waterford from Dublin! I said no no you’re mistaken, I take a train from Paddington to Fishguard and a train the other side to Waterford, I’ve done it many times. She replied Dublin only, that’s what the computer says. I didn’t travel as I would arrive too late via Dublin but I owe that poor lady in India a huge apology, there are no direct trains to Fishguard from Paddington and no trains from Rosslare to Limerick, progress. The car ferries, coach and air services were all fully booked being the August Irish bank holiday weekend. Now I fly and rent a car for brief visits.
Yeah! Pembrokeshire - the county where I live! I’ve said before and I’ll say it again - you have to do the ferry from Pembroke Dock too! If you do, I’ll buy you dinner while you are in Pembrokeshire! Another great video and thanks for promoting the ferries in and out of Pembrokeshire! (I know - I’m slow coming to this video but I’ve been saving it for a nice, lazy evening at home)
Thanks for your comment jezzaqc, Pembrokeshire is a very nice spot, some nice drone footage on UA-cam from the county, unfortunately all my travel has been canceled for a while because of the virus but may get some new vids up when this thing passes over
I don't have very good memories of Stena Europe, but my only trip with her was the day after Storm Eleonore, in January 2016. Even if the sea had calmed down from the previous day, it was still quite rough, and it was the only time I was absolutely miserable on board of a ship. Still, those who travelled the day before had it worse. Several vehicles were severely damaged on board the Irish Ferries Cherbourg to Rosslare sailing, and also on shore, traffic was a nightmare, with a number of Eurostars not running.
Yes, we travelled there and back in one day to collect something from Wexford, and the week before had been horrendous...the staff said lorries had overturned despite chains securing them, I took a seasick patch ''transderm Scop'',, it worked. Celtic sea is very rough, rougher even than the Irish Sea....St George's channel is this bit.
Like always, a wonderful video, thanks a lot. The Stena Europe, though, seems to be holding together thanks to its own rust, and makes a pretty unpleasant impression, similar to those ferries operating in SE-Asia or Africa...
Tony Quigley the harbour was custom built to handle only 2 ships, the Stena Europe is the main ship while Stena Nordica is the back up ship for when the Stena Europe goes into dry dock
The crew staff are on that ferry for the past 20 years. Welsh and Irish. Very friendly people

MS Marine Diesel that makes perfect sense and respect to you for being sensible about it. I hope you keep safe well during the outbreak!

Nicely filmed with interesting, informative comments.

Hard to disagree with you on that one Denis
Nice vid !!!!!
At 4:40 the ship seem to work with only the port side propeller......
Lovely flat crossing.. St George's Channel cuts up rough a lot of the time.. Pretty area though...Approach to Wales especially so.
I sometimes wonder whether Stena have simply forgotten to replace Stena Europe, she's 37 years old!
If it ain't broken don't fix it. It's a quality vessel built by Götaverken in Sweden back when we had shipyards.
nice views and very, very informative.
You have to do Dublin to Cherbourg on the Irish Ferries WB Yates
she's an old ship...outside handrails look like 2x4's :o)
It dos‘not take long for the salt air to do it’s work.
Flat crossing; when I was at sea we hit some pretty big seas in that area.
Worst sea sickness I ever experienced was on that crossing
Nice video thnx for posting!
why didn't they keep the Stena Felicity on this route? was bigger and built at the same time... (MS Stena Visby or Sealink Stena Felicity)
Tony Quigley the harbour was custom built to handle only 2 ships, the Stena Europe is the main ship while Stena Nordica is the back up ship for when the Stena Europe goes into dry dock
