FASTCAT FERRY FROM MATNOG TO ALLEN, SAMAR ISLAND

- After purchasing our ferry tickets at the booking office at the port it was just a short walking distance to the ship, with other ferry activities to watch as cargo and passengers were shifted around. The crossing across the San Bernardino Strait was smooth and very pleasant. In WWII Japanese and US naval forces considered this strait to be strategic and both forces tried hard to control the strait. The whole day went extremely smoothly, from purchasing the bus tickets, then carrying on the last distance in a tricycle to the Matnog port. After arriving in Allen on Samar Island there was just a short wait before we took a van to a place of stay suggested by the driver, Marju Krisel Resort, located just a few km outside of Calbayog. The resort turned out to be one of our more pleasant stays during our month long adventure taking local transport around the various islands of the Philippines. So in one day we managed to take a long bus ride, a long tricycle ride, a good ferry ride and a van to our destination. The view from the van along the western shore of Samar Island was wonderful but these vans travel too fast for any decent footage. This was the case for all the vans we took across Samar and Leyte and even Bohol, even though we managed to get the front seats every time.

1984 I spent 3.5 months riding my bicycle around the Philippines…. Covering about 1700 miles. I remember staying at a cheap hotel in Matnog that had wall that didn’t go to the ceiling. Got on the ferry to Allen the next morning.
Ang ganda ng lugar ,ang linis kelan ulit makaka bakasyon 🥰
Yes i enjoy my first time travel to samar last december ,, my first time to go there and i am only one,, i found a lot of friends for a short time thanks for them for guiding me 🙏👍🤭😁😁😅

I used to travel this route in the 70's. I love the experience then and its different today. In those days there were only 2 ferries that cross the San Bernardino street every single day. if you missed the morning crossing trip then you will have wait for the next trip in the afternoon. There was not enough facility at the time. Also the San Jose ferry terminal was new at the time and most of the trip utilized the Allen port terminal. But one experience that i wouldn't forget and worth telling. One late afternoon I arrived in Matnog, Sorsogon from Manila. I was a student then. I was alone and to my surprise there were no people on the street in Matnog when I arrived and even the port/wharf was empty. The jeep that I rode with from Legaspi was alone on the street and I was the last passenger. There were no store open. While I was observing the area I saw a restaurant and went inside to take some food . The restaurant was located on the left corner of the street if you're facing toward the gate of the wharf/port. While Inside the restaurant I saw 2 women having dinner on a table and another man also having dinner on another table. I learned later that the 2 women were teachers and the man was a salesman and I was a student. So I order my food. After I got my food and while I was half-way eating I hear 3 or 4 sound that looks like an explosion from a mortar bombs so loud that maybe was closer to 50-70 meters distance from us, and then followed by rapid machine gun fire. Upon hearing the exchanged of automatic fire I immediately dropped on the floor, pick up my bag and crawl toward the kitchen area. The woman/owner calmly walked to the entrance of the restuarant and closed it and locked. She told us, .."the police station is under attacked by the NPA, the police station is just across the street". I sat on the floor beside the kitchen sink with the other 3 customers. Then, the owner ushered us into 2 rooms, with the 2 women in one room and the other man and me on the other room. While the exchanged of automatic fire continues between the NPA and the policemen I look outside trough the window that was partially open and I saw outside I realized I was close to the ocean and I saw 2 men walking on the seashore unconcern of what was happening on the other side of the building. After almost an hour and while the firefight was still raging the owner ask the 4 of us if we want to cross the ocean to Samar by "pump boat" tonight. I said I am willing to go but I don't know if the other 3 are willing. I was 21 years old then. So off we went to Samar in the middle of the night on a small pump boat. I thought we were safe already because we were quite far from the gun battle zone between the NPA and the police when while we were half-way across the San Bernardino street the pump boat was almost sucked into a massive ocean whirlpool as large and wide as a house sitting on a 300 SQM piece of land. The man standing on the "Proha" shouted "ipo-ipo" and the other man who control the engine suddenly accelerated the engine to a safe distance. But man we were just about 2-3 meters away from the edge of the whirlpool. The danger was whirlpool is not stationary, it's moving depending on the strength of the current. You can hear the sound of it. There were 2 big whirlpool at that time and 4 or 5 smaller. So the pump boat was deliberately moving very slowly zigzagging to avoid hitting any of those whirlpools. After 3 hours in the early morning we landed in Allen, Northern Samar. Thanks God we crossed the San Bernardino Street to the historical Samar Island safe and sound. I mentioned "Historical" Samar Island because this is the mother island where the first Filipinos have meet Europeans (Magellan) in Soloan and Homonhon island (March 16-17, 1521) on the Eastern Samar side. And this is also the mother island where the first group of US service men in WW2 landed in Soloan island on a submarine several weeks before Gen. MacArthur landed in Palo Leyte on Oct. 20, 1944 to fulfill his promise "I shall Return".
Thank you for that very informative and impressive story about Matnog and the San Bernardino Strait. And that is what travel adventure is all about. I have many many such stories from my world travels but I am now content to travel around the Philippines and the islands to still get that sense of adventure.
Wow!
love this kind of story thank you sir
The Marju Krisel is a very nice Resort. I have often been there, also Calbayog it is very nice! Many greetings from Germany and to my Family in San Isidro
Thank you for your kind comments. Calbayog is very interesting especially the colourful fishing port.

I love how unique the Philippines is. Unlike other countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia where they use trains for transportation around the country, the Philippines use ferries. That's why they lack trains and have roros and seaports as well as aiports.
the Archipelago Country no borderland
they used to have trains...

That looks so an amazing and wonderful passenger ship with the cargo trucking
I am an Australian and have travelled on the ferry to Tasmania which has sleeping acomoddation as it is a 10 hour journey. Most people sit on the lounge seats as the fare is much cheaper. The Inter Island ferry in NZ carries trains as well as trucks and cars. These ferries are quite large. The inter island trip in New Zealand only takes 3 hours. Both of these ferries have extensive restarunts on board. I could fly but prefer to put my car on the ferry and watch the sea go by.

When you see a children swimming in the pier and wait to throw them a coin.. I'm one of them.. Mga batang pahagis boys😉
Wow! Kids still does that!
I can't swim, so seeing them dive to catch coins, as a kid it was dope! They are great swimmers, I can only dream of. I would love to travel Island to island, but I get motion sickness! Enjoy!
Kool!! You were my hero as a kid, see I cannot swim.
When I was 8 yrs old, we traveled fr Baybay Leyte to Zamboanga Mindanao, that was when I saw that phenomenal watching them diving down to catch the coin in the very deep sea! When I can only feel safe when water below my knee 😜, never changed, I'm in still an scary cat🙀
@@ryveralexander8511 all of the kids near the pier are all swimmers no teach them to swim they can learn of there own, like me no one teach me but I learn faster. I'm 5 years of that time when I learn to swim

Wow nice weather!
Ro Ro travels is basically cheap, but Rest Rooms in these ferries are a lingering concern. While some are up to standards, most are filthy and are wanting of maintenance issues.
Remembering Bicolandia lines.
