This video begins by explaining what a common noun and proper noun are. It then explains why common nouns aren't capitalized, but proper nouns are. (This is because common nouns are regular nouns--just words for people, places, and things. Proper nouns, on the other hand, are names of specific people places and things.)
Several examples are given showing common nouns, alongside similar proper nouns. These examples help to clarify the difference between the two types of nouns.
Next, the video lists seven rules to help prevent common errors are listed and explained with examples.
Finally, content is reviewed with a worksheet containing several nouns that learners capitalize (or not). The correct answers are given and checked at the end.

Your way of teaching is awesome! 😊
Hello Ms. Holly, I really love the grammar videos you have created on youtube. My kids are going to 4th grade this year and we are trying to sharpen our grammar skills this summers. Among the multiple videos available online, you stood out and we felt your videos were concise and at the same time covered all the important points. Can I please request you to create more videos on different singular/plural nouns, tense, phrases and clauses, etc. You know there is no end to grammar!
Thank you, we are your big fans..
Hello Tipu Dua, thank you for your very encouraging comment:) I am doing a few videos this summer, and I hope I can do a few of the ones you mentioned, especially phrases and clauses. I hope you and your children have a great summer!

Thanks for your thorough teaching, and I have a question!
-> I am a student in the department of administration in university. Is this correct?
Hello! For capitalization purposes, it is correct. However, usually native speakers would specify the area of study or future degree rather than the department. Example: I am a university student studying business administration. Or: I am a university student studying toward a bachelor's degree in business administration.
Thank you
Thank You so much

Can u plz explain whether the name of fruits and vegetables are common or proper noun? Bcoz google says papaya, banana etc are proper noun ...If they really are then why they are not capitalised ??? Plz clarify.
Fruits and vegetables are common nouns and should not be capitalized. Google search results are often incorrect since anyone can make a website and post anything, even if it's incorrect.
Use websites created by grammar experts like Grammarbook.com, DailyGrammar.com, Grammarly.com, etc. So, when you search in Google, use searches like "are fruits proper nouns Grammarly" or "are fruits proper nouns DailyGrammar" (instead of just "are fruits proper nouns").
@@EnglishUnits Thank you so very much for your reply and suggestion as well. Will surely try what u said. 🙏
@shifalipahwa You're welcome. I hope this helps:)
Your lecture was very nice.but, you gave that e.g of common noun and proper noun. This write was very unclear. Please resolve it.
Thanks teacher
Sorry but you are too fast while explainig, before one could absorb the rule you are on the next.
Maam sky, stars and night will be common or proper noun please explain
Hello, in the video, I give a very similar example of planets and galaxies. Look at that part, and tell me what you think the answer is.
@@EnglishUnits 🥺 I am confused
So, look at this common noun/proper noun pair:
common noun=planet
proper noun=Mars
The word "planet" is just a common noun, the word for a thing. The word "Mars" is the NAME of one planet.
If you can't make a common noun/proper noun pair for a word, that often means the word is a common noun. Example: afternoon. That's the word for a thing...but there is no proper noun or name of a specific afternoon.
So, now tell me what you think about "sky." Is it the word for a thing? Or is it the name of one of those things?
Election ek common noun h ya proper?
