The difference between Japan and the west is that in Japan, laying off employees is looked at like a failure of upper management and not a smart ploy to increase profits. When Japanese companies do layoffs, it usually involves the CEO or president making a tearful public apology and saying that they are sorry for failing.
And the Japanese CEO would usually take a pay cut. They also don’t earn the insane salaries that western company CEOs have.

Some companies I've worked for here will offer you a generous severance package just to get you out the door without too much fuss; others will make your work life sufficient unpleasant that you'll voluntarily leave. But given population decline and the general lack-of-workers here this year seems to be doing well for a decent pay increase for all workers, not just capcom, which is why they're trying to get ahead of the curve before people start poaching their best.

I decided to check, and I think it's an innocent mistake in this case. Typing in Eichiro Oda does have Aonuma's photo on the list near the top, in an article published by The Medium. Using Google Image Search, the literal first result is a tweet saying:
"Always hilarious when ppl try to use a picture of Oda and it’s Hideo Kojima😭"
So apparently it's a fairly common mistake which is... kind of funny? Probably not in this case, but I don't blame Shillup for an innocent mistake that isn't that uncommon. I blame Google in this case.

There are a lot of games that I would love to simply pay for and have access to offline whenever I want them but Netflix instead requires you to pay monthly on top of maintaining an internet connection to verify you still have an active sub. It's a shitty anti-consumer business model.

It feels most of the layoffs in the gaming industry as a result of horrible corporate choices. In asian countries, more executives take responsibility for their failures so it makes sense that asian studios arent laying off many people while western studions fire thousands of workers while raising executive pay

I feel it's disingenuous to outright claim that executives are just more responsible in Japan when in reality, mass layoffs such as the kind we're seeing in the West are illegal. We need stronger labor laws and attributing the lack of layoffs to responsible Japanese devs is distracting from that. Executives are always as greedy as they're allowed to be. People talk about Iwata's pay cut as if it was a noble thing to save the company from layoffs but those layoffs were never on the table in Japan and you can see that clearly because at the same time he took that paycut Nintendo of Europe had mass layoffs.

I also heard that laws in Japan requires executives to take pay cuts in certain circumstances, so the one that Iwata took may not be out of the kindness of his heart. This Week in Video Game Layoffs would be a 10 minute show if Shill wasn't whining and crying about a bunch of workers who are most likely going to be immediately hired somewhere else, or within 6 months tops. We also never hear about all the hiring that's done, just the layoffs. It's ridiculous.
The simple fact that WB is even considering wiping these games from people's libraries, people who already bought the game, should scare the shit out of everyone.

It should make you go out and buy physical media instead.
They're delisting, that just means they're leaving storefronts. Anyone who bought them will still have access in their library.
Why should people just now be scared? Sony revoked access to all purchased digital Discovery content months ago and nobody batted an eye. It’s been a threat to the industry for a while now.
But tbh, you don't even own some games when you buy a physical copy. So many games are live services or in some way require connecting to a server. So even if you have a physical copy of the game, if the servers go down, the game is still basically unplayable. Then you also have games like Destiny 2 which ontop of being a live service is also "vaulting" content. So even if the game still exists there is content that you paid for which you still cannot access anymore. Think of all the various event's and iterations of games like Fortnite which not longer exist or are accessible.

It's smart for Capcom and other Japanese studios to invest in retaining their staff. This isn't a knock on small indies but on the big corp companies that are screwing themselves over long term for a quick buck now.
Screwing themselves over for a quick buck now is BAU for big corporations. They're betting on the techbros being right about generative AI, just like the techbros were about NFT's.
Labor is already in short supply, so the vast majority of the people laid off are being hired somewhere else withing 6 months or less. But Shill has to fill up the entire show with crying about labor or else the actual game news would be 10 minutes or less.

Toriyama was probably one of the most influential authors in all of the 20th century media. The amount of stuff, both eastern and western that just simply wouldn't exist without him is unreal. Not to mention just how universally beloved he was as a person. A terrible loss, but his legacy will live on for years uncountable.
Toriyama's passing is the saddest for me, it's hard not to get choked up when reading the tributes. Such a recognizable, charming and timeless art style. I would love for Blue Dragon to come to Steam, and I'm going to do a rewatching of the entire Dragon Ball series

In case anyone doesn't get the joke, that's not Oda at 11:27. That's Eiji Aonuma, and I'm sure the editors know that. It's a bit of an old meme to use Aonuma's picture instead of Oda's when talking about him, stemming from an old article where the author accidentally did that.

I mean we already knew from Final Fantasy 15 that the appeal of camping is the gourmet food being cooked over an open fire (lol). I do want to play Dragon's Dogma 2 but jeez the Australia tax is hitting hard with that price tag.
Unicorn Overlord is a game that really brings back the feelings from the 2000's strategy games. However, the main that grabbed was the gameplay. I hope I wasn't the only one that linked UO to the old great Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen. Que characters roaming the map, the liberation of towns, getting knock back when you lose a fight, etc etc etc.
This game dips in Ogre Battle, Fire Emblem, Tatics Ogre/Final Fantasy Tatics and Vanillaware own Grand Kingdom territory and fuses it all perfectly. This game is a goddamn gem and more people should be aware of it.
The demo allow you to play 5h of the game, and I recommend anyone to download it and give it a try.
Too bad where I live it is the target of scalpers so it is nowhere to be found. In the meantime I'm playing the demo
Gonna have to wait for the game to go on sale to be honest. I know the studio doesn't publish to PC, but that sort of old thinking is dying and they really need to get over themselves. So I will just buy the game when its on sale sometime later.
would be nice to also notice some of the other hot topics: that steam curator list, some people going after toriyama after his death, the absolute wreckage of sinking city 1 ex-publisher behaviour ( the second game now is now a wonder ), limited run being a highly anti-consumer company and so forth

The worst part about the cancellations and layoffs/closures at sony is this was all so easily preventable. If the execs weren't so tone deaf towards the loud resentment to the live service model they would have backed other and better fit projects instead, but sadly the only thing they wanted was something to relentlessly milk until the udders bled.

He doesn't have to take a side, but pretending like there's nothing to see here just calls his integrity into question. It's possible to explain the situation without casting a value judgment.
