The more options we are offered the better imo. I feel like some people tell themselves they need every edition of a movie that comes out. Just buy what makes you happy. If a new edition comes out that you like more than get it! If not then let it pass! No need to have every edition for a collection.
The problem is they release steelbooks like months after the normal 4k release so if you really love those steelbooks then it sucks becuase you've already spent the money on the original release. That's how I feel about these Godfather steelbooks. Same thing with the indiana jones steelbooks. They released the steelbook 4 movie collection last year and now this year they are releasing better looking steeelbooks. It's very frustrating

Sony is recently re-releasing previous released UHD Blu-Ray titles that came with HDR+10 only with Dolby Vision, now.
An example is the Men In Black 25th Anniversary Edition that came in July.
No wonder why people are getting fed up and "bugged" by all these "new" editions coming out every six months or so.
For the record: i'm only buying movies that I didn't own on 4K/2k Blu-Ray. I never double-dip on anything.
We have to accept that physical media has a release structure. They start out with the biggest and best for the die hards, but if you don't want the big super editions, all you have to do is wait a few months.
Usually that can be the case. With Indy however, we had to wait over a year and they still don't have stand alone regular versions. Just steelbooks they're rolling out.
I hate that Best Buy has exclusive steelbooks. Most of the time I can't ever find the steelbooks I want. If Target or Barnes and Noble had it in their stores, it wouldn't be such a hassle to track a new release down.
Best Buy is a pain in the ass with their steelbooks. They get like 7 copies, sell out the morning of release, and don't restock for another year.
I hate when any company offers a more pleasing version of something you bought shortly after you bought it. Also, I hate when I show patience and don't bite on a limited item expecting a better version that never comes and you miss out entirely 😒
The constant steelbook and special editions are marketing ploys by these studios, plain and simple. As a collector for 15+ years, I've been seeing this trend for a while, which is why I am more than happy stopping at Blu-Ray as my final format to collect/upgrade for now. In this economy, double dipping on so many of these releases is just not financially feasible, and it only pushes the consumer further away from the product and creates resentment in my opinion. I think many collectors who are interested in these editions will have to make a choice: either keep double dipping as more releases come, or just wait it out and if it's a movie you really enjoy and want to own, buy it then. I just want the movie to watch and enjoy, bells or whistles be damned.

I normally feel pretty safe when a brand new movie that just came out gets a Blu-ray release. When a brand new movie gets only a Blu-ray release that’s just ridiculous. Especially if they do a 4K later on. I imagine X is going to be getting a 4K. They should’ve done that on 4K to begin with.

I bought it for $30 on mercari and still feel ripped off. Rumor reports said paramount planned to release a 2nd box set with 5-8 so i bit.
I was shocked to see them go full cock meat sandwich and release another box set with 1-6.
Im taking the L and buying the individual slips with superior artwork and going whole hog on the motion picture big dick edition.
Hopefully they do a TNG set because those movies are shit but i still want 4ks
I love seeing all this stuff come out. It would be a nightmare if I tried to buy everything but I'm pretty selective and rarely have buyer's remorse.

This. Exactly. Are we collecting movies or are we collecting packaging? I like nice packaging (those Universal digibooks suck ass and scratch discs) as much as anyone but it’s the MOVIE that really matters.
Picked up Star Trek NG complete box set, Battlestar Galactica complete set, and 3 of the Doctor Who complete sets for a little over $200 total. Well worth it. Physical media may be a bit of a mess at the moment but physical media is still as solid as ever imo.
Releasing expensive steelbooks with Blu-rays we already bought and charging $50 for them is ridiculous. At least give options for a standard and a steelbook. In Canada both the Army of Darkness and Fright Night 4K steelbooks are $50 each.
When I saw The Godfather Steelbook announcement I was upset because I wouldn't have purchased the boxset if I knew steelbooks were coming out!

I have been collecting for a couple of years now. I have around 400 4ks/Criterion blu rays and I think I’m done. I researched each and every one (This channel had some good recs) and it is a high quality collection but I have all I want and don’t want any part of dealing with anything like that monstrosity behind you lol. I only see myself picking up the rest of the Tarantino and James Cameron 4ks when they come out and calling it a day. I rotate and change hobby’s often but from what is see from many physical media collectors the line between being a collector and a hoarder is a blurry one at best. Thanks for your videos! I’m grateful that we are getting so much stuff thrown at us at once, we are living in a new golden age for physical media collecting, this is a non issue for me

I just try to be more aware of what the studios are up to now. I didn’t upgrade my Godfather blu-rays because I figured this would probably happen. It would be nice if the studios would release both at the same time, but I think it’s exactly what you said in the video, they want to see how well sales are before spending more money to have steelbooks produced. So I think as consumers and collectors, we should try to be more patient and mindful. Great video, Ken! 🤘

I see this happening as well Ken...and I am a steelbook collector before I look for 4K with slip. I understand people's frunstration, but I won't let it get to me nor will I let it deter me from collecting physical media. If I want it that bad, I will double dip.

I totally agree they release these variants too close together. Im guilty of double and triple dipping but I wont if theres no extra content/visual upscale. A new cover isnt enough to get a double dip unless the movie is really special or a adequate length of time has passed to make me accept the shakedown.
I have over 700 blu-rays and I just ran out of space. I have bought digital only for some time now. Specially with games .
@Mike P not really but some companies have some questionable practices. Sony was going to block access to their old games. Vudu I don't know but in the fine print it's all their stuff anyways
@Mike P That's a great idea to rip them and keep them on your HDD. Vudu just changed to fandango and I am not missing any movies. I am currently in Spain and they don't even sell fiscal media here anymore. Crazy!

Best Buy is just about THE LAST COMPANY that should have any exclusives. I had them send me SEVERAL different copies of the same Only @ Best Buy Steelbook about 4 years ago, and every single one came in damaged. Eventually I ordered the German 4K version of the same Steelbook. Then I decided to see whether or not they'd learned anything, and placed an order recently that included a Steelbook that has already been released besides pre order items, and THAT was damaged!!!! That's not to mention the order I placed for the Steelbooks with the Mexican Day of the Dead artwork theme back when those came out that came in a massive box with some kind of USPS security seal and were all destroyed, the Christmas Vacation one that also had a problem, and the American Psycho and Saw Steelbooks that ALSO came in damaged, etc.!!!
I agree Best Buy Needs to Check The Steelbooks before they Ship to People. I mean Steelbooks are ment for Collecter's and They need to Crack Down on there Shipping Department.

Guess it's a good thing I can't afford new releases and wait for deals! I am one that does not collect steelbooks and want the cheapest option. One big thing that pisses me off is about box sets. I hate when a studio releases the first movie in the franchise, wait for people to buy them up and then release a box set with the sequels. So you have to purchase the set, even though you already own the first one. Predator and Karate Kid comes to mind. I have the first movie of each franchise and then within a year they put out the sets without offering them individually.
I was pretty annoyed when I saw the news about the Godfather steelbooks. But that hasn't stopped me from feeling tempted. 😀
I'll likely have to wait until closer to the fall to determine whether I double dip. Currently, the steelbooks only appear to be available in the U.S. and there's no way I'm trusting Amazon to safely ship such pricey and fragile products to Canada.
My hope is I can find copies in a local store in September. If so, there's a good chance I'll buy them, especially the steelbook for the first film.
Fortunately, I don't see these as absolute must-own items. I'll be happy if I get the option to buy them at a reasonable price but I won't be heartbroken if it doesn't happen.
Non-steelbook releases tend to NOT sell out, so I don't feel a need to pre-order them. I suppose I'm lucky I'm in grad school, so my purchasing is LIMITED. I will pre-order a steelbook, however. Maybe I'm in the minority, but unless the film is OLD or high action, 4k vs blu-ray is not a deal breaker. Seeing Catch Me If You Can in 4k vs blu-ray, or Mean Girls, is not an issue for me if they were to re-release them in 4k. I understand the frustation, and double dipping is sometimes frustrating. I have the older tin can set of the Friday the 13th series on blu ray, yet still purchased the Scream Factory box set with the same blu ray discs. That box is GORGEOUS, and there were YEARS between these releases. If they did a series I'm beloved to such as Halloween or NOES the same way they're doing Star Trek, I would be pretty frustrated.

I'm more of a movie collector than a packaging collector. I only collect steelbooks for movies I absolutely love and I only have very few of these. But I feel that these studios could have a better release strategy or improve their communication to consumers so that we are better informed and can make the right decisions cos at the end of the day it's our hard-earned money. While I love that there's so much physical media in the market now, I feel that the studio's strategies could be the culprit of physical media possibly "dying". And I don't want that to happen.

People need to be grateful that the movie studios are even releasing stuff on Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray if they wanted to they could make everyone stream it and say the hell with the Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray collectors
I love physical media but sometimes taking a break or decreasing your regular buying is a good idea, especially in these times , P M is not going anywhere. You will always be able to pick up your blue ray and 4k deals on Amazon or best buy or where ever. I usually buy a few every month and stick to a budget of no more then 100 per month now. I have Top Gun 2 and Dog soldiers on pre order for the fall. IT is good to take abit of a break if you find your going way overboard and it's cutting into important living expenses .
Taking a break every once in awhile is probably a good idea. Plus recharges your passion for collecting as well I'm sure.
That is ridiculous Ken I Wish movies would come out with special editions and steel books once movies are released but I guess some movies are getting new releases and 4ks and steel books for people to think about buying and keep physical Media movies alive. I agree with you Ken 💯

if the studios can Just respect the fact that people want Both formats physical media and digital
then you would have the same exact versions of a movie on digital as on physical that are Not Tampered with badly
that they take good care of in restoring and if they do want to add some New stuff Correctly , that is Fine for the consumer
like say the multiple versions of close encounters of the third kind which have Different cuts of the movie
But Not if its Done in a way that makes people frustrated, Like with godfather 3
Or the different part in star wars a new hope when they added that greedo bit where greedo says Maclunkey when they couldve just restored in the special edition Han shooting first and then it goes to the Han talking to Jabba
and that there would be a rule for the digitals that says "given that you bought this either seperately with the bluray or without you do own the movie regardless if the digital is a License" cause there have been channels that have been chicken littleing sony taking down studio canal stuff and i keep thinking "look this is only in countries where they dont have a proper system in place where they have safeguards where the movies can go from place to place safely

My only complaint about physical media is that people wanna sell used movies on ebay close to retail prices. Why aren't people generous and realistic? For example, Mad Max Fury Road 4k. I'd sell it used for 10 bucks if I didnt want it. But everyone wants to sell it for 20. But that might just be an ebay thing.

I have to admit that I am one of those that bought the 4 movie set of the first STAR TREK movies. Now, Paramount says, okay, there is a market for these, so we will release the box set AGAIN with all six and individuals with slipcovers. It was a cash grab marketing ploy.
Remember the way Paramount cautiously dipped their toes in the HD waters with Star Trek back in the day? That seems to be what they're doing here in my opinion.

The steelbook before the standard case release confuses the hell out of me. I'm not a steelbook collector, so when I see only that for a release I want, I end up buying it.
I'm just curious if Angel Heart or Shooter will be released in a standard cases, for cheaper, in the future. I thought it unusual that Angel Heart (the movie) was exclusive to Best Buy, but I bought it.
They hedge their bets with only the box sets because they can't forecast exact sales. When the sales for box sets speed ahead, now there's a market for individual releases. Personally I love all the releases. As someone that likes to buy Blu rays and 4ks I like looking forward to new issues and releases. Means film is still alive
Things have become disjointed since 4k has really taken off...however, for me, I'm not worried about going 4k crazy, but I do want new restorations of films that I really dig that had lesser quality releases, which means if 4k is it, that's cool. I've got over a thousand blurays and most are simply amary cases, with a few box sets and several digipacks. I don't have any steel books at all as they would drive me nuts trying to keep them scratch free. I was very excited about the new fright night release until I realized it was steelboook...I'll wait for the regular case...
I waited on the Indian Jones set and Godfather, picked up the 4k Indy steelbooks this week. Raiders is a beautiful steelbook. I'm not a big steelbook collector but I prefer to have them individually. Wish I waited on Jurrasic Park.
I was waiting for black Friday sale on the godfather 50th anniversary but now will definitely have to get those steelbooks instead. So I guess they're getting that 90 they wanted originally one way or another.

Its not a mess its just changing. Titles are still coming out in 4k and different formats but it will be all streaming at some point in the future.
I’ve had my fill of Steelbooks. There have been too many times, where I get my steelbook home, only to remove the wrapping, and discover a DENT. They also seem to scratch simply through routine handling. They look nice, but slipcovers look really nice too. In regard to Paramount, they are STRAIGHT-UP sticking it to the collector.
Just found the channel, been collecting physical since VHS. It's def a wild time right now, Spider-man No Way Home reprint specifically is crazy as I had to spend up to finally get one that was in mint condition now it's coming our again for half what I paid.
In my experience they almost always release either a steelbook or a standard release at some point, so for me if they don’t announce the release I want I just wait a little.

They are probably testing the market with the slips or box set and then they release a collectors edition or standard slip if it does well I would think on a business stand point
Here are my thoughts: I have no problem with what the studios are doing. If a new steelbook comes out and you are not crazy about the artwork or the fact that it’s a steelbook then don’t buy it. Nobody is forcing us collectors to buy anything. If I walk into Best Buy and see a slipcover but I wanted a steelbook then it should be my decision to either wait or settle for the slipcover. If a month later a steelbook is released then it’s MY fault for not waiting. If I want the steelbook that bad then I should double dip but that’s no one’s problem but my own.

I agree that the studios are testing the waters to see what sells. If what they initially release sells really well, like a boxset, then studios will proceed to release different editions. To me, it's no different from the DVDs releases back in the day with the different editions and so on. Overall, I love it all. I don't mind double dipping if necessary. I pick and choose carefully and if my budget allows, I will pick up a newer edition if I like the release, particularly The Godfather steelbooks. Those are gorgeous. It's the same artwork as the prints that came with the big collector's set with the book.

The thing I hate more than anything is the ongoing, seemingly CONSTANT audio issues with release after release after release! Totally unacceptable as a consumer, & it seems to be happening with ever increasing frequency, as though its just acceptable. Spoiler alert - IT IS NOT!
It would be nice if they just focused on singular, definitive releases. They are pulling all of these tricks and maneuvers to try and double and triple dip dedicated, niche collectors....when if they just focused on ONE definitive release, they would arguably have more penetration and impact with that release.
Some of the potential buyers get eroded away by them putting out all of the different versions. Every great Blu ray releases comes with "Should I wait for the 4K, will they do a 4K?" Every standard or steelbook release comes with "I think I want to wait for the other release" etc etc
I do wish they'd at least let people know what their plans are for a steelbook or a regular version before releasing them. Let people know what's coming out so they can plan accordingly or just release steelbooks with the regular editions so we have a choice.
I've paid too much for some titles and got great deals on others; therefore, I treated as cost averaging. I'm happy overall with my mixed bag buying over the years. I have some titles on DVD yet to be released on BR or 4K. I'm holding off buying titles on BR anticipating 4K releases.
That's ridiculous to think you are being "forced" to double dip on anything. For every release, we all get to decide whether we want to buy it or not. For example, I bought the 4k boxset of Indiana Jones last year. I am NOT buying the standalone releases because it is not worth it to ME, but if it is worth it to YOU then go ahead and buy them.

Here in Australia we don't get any of the same treatment at all compared to the rest of the world. When we get a new release it is the DVD - BLU-RAY and 4K these all come without slips and steelbooks. We rarely get a release that comes with a steelbook or a slipcover. To the issue at hand i really think it just comes down to the person and how they manage their money just need to resist temptation you don't need to own every edition usually i am just happy with a bluray. I would never double dip on a movie I already have i don't see the point but that's just me maybe if it's like your favourite movie of all time I could understand that.
Hey it's ok this makes it fun collecting, upgrading we've been doing that for years Vhs mono to stereo then Laser Disc 🙄 then stereo then dolby digital then DTS 😬some beta max then dvd, onto bluray now 4k it's expensive but it's what we do. I've been upgrading home theater stuff that crap really expensive so enjoy the ride. It's better than throwing away your money on the 3 Demons Cigs lotto and booze. My only complain are the stores they want to sell you big and expensive tv then try to sell u on streaming quality that's crap have the disc in stores that half the fun.......
I’m basically at the point where if a movie comes out on Blu-Ray I stop and wait as lots have been coming out on 4K within a year or so later(Paramount Presents) and I’m going to buy The Black Phone on ITunes Digital since it’s in 4K, Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos and skip the Blu-Ray Release. I will happily continue to purchase tv shows on Blu-Ray but for movies I’m waiting as even boutique titles are getting 4K’s at a good pace now. I was burned by Paramount on the Indiana Jones set as I really only wanted the first 3 on 4K Disc and would have happily just purchased KOTCS on Digital ITunes.
Double-dipping bait and switch tactics is something that the studios will always do, especially with the fan favorite films where they know sales will be high. I can tolerate it as long as physical media is still being made, but as much as it appears that PM is making a comeback, brick and mortar retailers have dumped it and there's no sizable comeback with dedicated players. There's game consoles, sure, but in my experience there's not much overlap between gamers and DVD/BD/UHD-BD collectors. Me, I'll continue to collect in spite of the double/triple-dipping going on with the studios, but I'll collect with the sense that in the long term, the days of this medium are numbered. So I would encourage everyone to snatch up those titles while they can, because we don't know when the gears will grind to a halt.
I get frustrated with it from time to time but, I am always going to want to truly own my movies.

I hate to say it but you answered the “why?” question. They know that collectors will double dip for the same discs. They did it with the Indiana Jones movies. Now they’re doing it with The Godfather ones. I just care about getting the movie in the best format available. I’m happy with my Indy and Godfather box sets. That said, I will be returning my unopened Fatal Attraction Blu-ray to get the 4K though.
Just don’t buy any steelbooks. That’s the the only way to stop this crap.
I've forgotten about dvd and standard Bluray and won't look back, unless it's Criterion than it's worth snatching up. UHD has been a phenomenal step up. I mean unless I can scan a 35mm print, there's no substitute. Funny enough, saying this I do still collect Laserdiscs! Because fhey have valuable and exclusive special features.
At least with Sony, the Last Action Hero is a reissue of a Best Buy exclusive steelbook, and sometimes they will at least add Dolby Vision and few other bells (ala Ghostbusters, Karate Kid etc.)
Remember my motto, folks - STEELBOOKS ARE STUPID. Buy the standard 4K only. And hey, why stop with steel? Make a half inch plasticbook, or a woodbook or a formicabook!? Especially in this economy, such brainless repetition is just plain crazy. Sure, it's also easy to try avoiding blu-rays too, until the 4K appears, but when will it? A year later? A month later? Again, don't bother - just wait for the regular 4K and move on. You'll save a fortune, baby! 😎
With the Star Trek discs that is pretty normal unfortunately, at my nearby Entertainment store they have multiple different collections of the Star Trek Films on Blu-Ray: A Six Movie Set, two # movie Sets (1-3, 4-6) another 3 movie set Trilogy (2-4) the TNG Films, and a 10 Movie set.
I never pay full price when something "just comes out", I wait and I certainly do not feel sorry for people who pay to much as an impulse buy, that's their choice and there's a market available for that choice, but certainly do not piss & moan when it's cheaper later. Look at Klipsch 600M originals now 50% off because the Mark II's came out. This has been going on for decades in one form or another. I just got the Indy Jones on Prime day for $40, all 4 movies and Jurassic 5 movies for $30. Waiting for these 2 sets to go down saved me about $60-$70. So, if you must "have it now", you pay more. The simple advice is WAIT!!!
Agreed.. It doesn't bother me that it's labeled as a set even though they are in the makes of making an addition to the movie series. Getting the Indiana Jones 4K for movie pack was definitely worth the $40. And when they come out with another one I'll wait for that to go on sale and then just add it to my collection if I enjoy it. Just like with the Matrix. I have the trilogy and then they came out with the fourth one. So I'll have to add.. just kidding I'm not buying that movie. LOL but seriously for all the manipulation from companies and the quick Buck mindset, if I don't love the movie, waiting seems like the best thing because it saves you more money.
Great video, Ken! The studios definitely need to take a step back and re-think their business models. I've been buying physical media since about 1994 and I'm almost done. There's rarely any upgrades I actually want, I got Angel Heart UHD. Next disc I pick up will probably be the Lost Highway UHD. I used to buy between 3-5 movies a week sometimes, it's down to like 2-3 a month now maybe.

steelbooks are basically a way to help resell the movie if people Miss out on the movies the first Go around
I get it if people prefer to collect one over another. I just collect for the content and in this day and age glad to have it with everything that’s happening in the streaming world.
When you see eBay auctions that list just a slipcover or just the steelbook WITHOUT the disc(s)- it’s not about the movie(s) anymore. Not sure the day that changed, but it’s concerning. I invested in building a great home theatre- it plays discs…not slipcovers, steelbooks, posters, postcards, etc.
My advice, folks: stay in your lane. If you like slipcovers the best (as you should) wait until a slipcover. If you want the steel, get the steel. Dont mix the two.
I'm holding out for Godzilla collections. That Criterion Showa era collection is so bad. We need a real release of all four Japanese eras.
If I do double-dip sometimes and you better believe that the best version of packaging gets the new discs. Only thing: sometimes I forget I upgraded a movie because the new disc is sitting in old package. For instance, forgetting I bought Predator 4K because I placed it in the better looking dvd case that I previously owned(it is exciting though to discover a forgotten upgrade though).
Steelbooks is all I buy anymore.
If it wasn't for Sony JVC Phillips and Toshiba we would have no physical media whatsoever support these companies
I don’t have any 4K because I don’t have the capability. Just Bluray and dvd and I’m happy. 📀
I could not care less about 4K Blu rays since those are DRM monstrosities
