I particularly liked your advice about using the paint, as formulated by the manufacturers, I've used all sorts over the years and it is absolutely true..... use the right technique , and you'll get the right finish! ;-)
After a complete disaster trying to paint a table brunswick green, I sanded it down and started again using your technique. I have to say, I'm well chuffed even after just the first coat, I can't wait to get another coat on to see how it looks. Many thanks for sharing and taking the time record the videos!
Like you said, paints today dry quicker. I've been paint boats (as a kid) since 1976 and the urethane paint hasn't change in all these years. It drys quickly and can sag. Penetrol added makes the process so much better and the paint looks better albeit transparent so sometimes you need to paint several times, but longer dry time and no sags.
Great to watch..i trained as a Coachpainter at East Kent Road Car Company from 1979..painting Buses using Parsons and Williamsons Paint..and my trustee set of Hamilton brushes..Sadly made redundant because it was cheaper to spray buses elsewhere..Nice work sir!

His painting techniques is different to maybe what I was taught and there is a possibility you too but the information he provides is valuable to anyone wanting to paint their narrow boat.
ive painted numerous narrow boats, over the years,, with all types of paint, but I would never tell a novice to use 4 inch brushes , he should as you know be telling people to ease the paint of to suit themselves.no two people like paint at the same constituency,,.. now hes got several undercoats and primers on those boats ,, so his exterior finish is only cosmetic ,, plus you cant roll a gloss paint without thining it, and he doesent make mention of using synthetic brushes with synthetic paint,, if you use pure bristle on synthetic it lines badly ,its meant to be put on with synthetic brushes, bristles for oil based, Hamilton do some nice synthetic brushes,,, plus as you know sponge rollers fill paint with air.
A trick I learned when using Craig and Rose polyurethane Varnish was the reverse light laying off method. It is a 3 step process. Lay off top to bottom then lay off lighter horizontally then lay off lighter still up stroke only. I always use that technique when painting the final coat on large panels. The European VOC directive has made the quality tradesperson's life more difficult and finding a paint system that allows for superior leveling has become problematic. Even our most trusted and reliable paint strippers have been banned.
Awesome videos! You use high density foam 4” rollers, where do you get these because the ones I’ve tried fall to bits. The low flock mohair one leave a mottled affect. This painting skill is something I need to practice! Thanks
Curious now if i can add coach paint into a spray gun with paint thinners and just spray gun it coz i need to paint my classic landrover and i cant hold a brush or roller😂
I have to paint outside , in the sun /heat ? I have to thin with white spirit and/or paint conditioner as the paint dries to quickly and i cant keep a wet edge.
hi colin i know what your saying, but as i am approved by two major paint company's i have to mindful of telling people to add things to there products, as you know white spirit in too large a concentration will have the effect of dulling the gloss and thinner coatings means more coats will need to be applied, not something people always do.

I suppose you get asked this question quite a lot but to get a glass finish with the final gloss coat is that affect achieved by sticking to the 4 gloss coat and sanding down to acquire that glass effect?
Hi to get a completely brush stoke free finish you would have to make sure you are painting on to a well prepared surface and ease the paint a little with a flowing agent such as easy flow just remember that thining or easing the paint will likely result in a thinner coat so more will need to be applied
Hi can this paint be used on a car several coats then cut back and buffed to a high gloss? I’m thinking of doing my car this way,an old mini I have seen Rust-Oleum paint used like this! Any advice appreciated thank you Steve

@@JohnbarnardBiz I'v just bought some Paintman synthetic coach enamel, I haven't used it yet, but they say it's touch dry in 3 hours and fully cured in 24. Is that similar to your paint in drying time?.
40 odd years a sign writer and time served painter and I didn't know that was the way I should be doing it. what a load of tosh....if its very cold paint wont run and you have to ease it off. if you know what you are doing you can lay it on thick as you like ..it wont run...every one paints differently . some people cant handle thick paint.. I never once saw you load your brush properly, just diped it in the paint. you should be telling people to use synthetic brushes with synthetic paint and bristles with oil based. do you watch these vids you look so amature. and sound silly
everyone paints differently . I didn't see him do anything "wrong" , you can dip your brush like that if you want so long as it all looks even in the end . I agree the Finish don't need to be that thick coz of all the primer and undercoat and id prolly thin it quite a bit and roll some tight coats laying off with a brush as you go

He's working inside, where it's never colder than 16 degrees and the paint is at ambient temperature. So, he adds nothing to the paint. 3. Not everyone knows what they're doing, when painting and would benefit from trying out his method, to ensure no sagging, or splashing. 4. He loaded his brush with paint, enough to cover what he wanted to and it didn't drip. 5. Synthetic brushes with 'water based' paint and natural bristles with oil based. - The only fair point you made, had you got it right.

do you alter your paint for rolling? a good painter will be able to line out that paint horrizontaly and not be afraid of it running ,

Some of the canal boats look so smooth and glossy I've been assuming they were painted with sprayers. Is that ever done?
I spray everything, with airless, hvlp, lvlp and pressure pot ,
What paint is it.
thinking of painting my boat, do I need to take the windows out or just mask them?
Taking them out makes sure there is nothing going on behind them which you can't see now but may show up later,
If you can out is best option
