- Emerging Southeast Asia Long-term Economic Outlook by 2050
Over the next two decades, the total ASEAN economy measured in nominal terms in US Dollars is forecast to reach more than quadruple. Increasing from $3 trillion in 2020 to $13.3 trillion by 2040.
This will make the ASEAN economies' combined GDP much larger than Japan's or Germany's GDP by 2040. Highlighting the increasing importance of the ASEAN region as one of the world's largest consumer markets. By 2040, ASEAN's share of world GDP is projected to increase to 5.4% of the world’s economy.
According to S&P Global, before 2040, The Philippines and Thailand will join Indonesia on the roaster of major Global economies, reaching over a Trillion dollars of nominal GDP.
The Philippines is forecast to become one of the Asia-Pacific region's small group of one trillion-dollar economies by 2033. While Thailand will join this grouping of the largest economies in APAC by 2036.
Other countries in the Asia-Pacific region with over one trillion-dollar economy are China, Japan, India, South Korea, Australia, and Taiwan.
Consequently, the outlook for the Philippines' economy over the next decade is very favorable, with significant progress in economic development expected. Rapidly rising per capita GDP and standards of living will help to underpin a broad improvement in human development indicators. And will deliver a significant reduction in the share of the population, living in extreme poverty over the decade ahead.
The Philippines is poised to become the world’s 18th biggest economy by 2050, as long as it addresses its infrastructure lack. A long-term projection, made by London-based macroeconomic research organization, Capital Economics.
Meanwhile, rising per capita GDP levels will also put pressure on Thailand's competitiveness in certain segments of its manufacturing export industry.
Therefore, an important policy priority for the nation will continue to transform manufacturing export industries towards higher value-added processing in advanced manufacturing industries.
The World in 2050 report issued by PWC, enumerated the latest long-term global growth projections to 2050 for 32 of the largest economies in the world, accounting for around 85% of the world’s economy.
Accordingly, The Philippines and Vietnam make the greatest moves up in the ranking amongst the major economies in Southeast Asia. The Philippines will rank 19th globally, inching up by 9 places from the 28th spot in 2016, while Vietnam will rank 20th globally with an outstanding rise which ranks up by 12 places, from the 32nd spot in 2016.
Another Asean states which takes part in the major Global Economies is Indonesia, which ranked 4th. Malaysia ranked in 24th place, followed by Thailand in 25th spot.
The World in 2050, reported that Indonesia will still remain the biggest economy in the region by 2050 with a GDP measured in nominal terms amounting to $7.3 Trillion, followed by the Philippines with a GDP of $2.5 Trillion, Vietnam with an economy reaching $2.3 Trillion, Malaysia with an economy of $2.1 Trillion, and Thailand with GDP of $2 Trillion.

This is only a prediction if the GDP of each country is stable until 2050...
I'm a little surprised this channel presents such forecasts and comparisons so far into the future. It is basically meaningless. Favorable conditions (recent highs) of recent times for one country will likely change in the coming years. Philippines is an example of that for the past several decades. Many changes and fluctuations will happen in 3 decades time, internally and externally. Forecasting economic growths in a 5 yrs span is uncertain enough and comes with constant revisions. Even a 1 yr prediction often comes with quarterly revisions, let alone nearly 30 yrs ahead. In the late 80s many pundits and media predict Japan will surpass the US in GDP within a decade. In 2010s, the same prediction with China (even with faked GDP) surpassing the US. That is not happening either and very unlikely in the foreseeable future.

I'm from the Philippines🇵🇭. I think one of the keys to sustaining or improving our economic growth is to address our manufacturing sector, agri sector, utilize our natural resources (like oil) and also improve our infrastructures to lower inflation, improve BOT, create more businesses and jobs and to make everything more efficient. Otherwise, consumer spending will continue to drop overtime which is a major component of economic growth.

There will always be corruption and wealth gap, it is part of the capitalistic package. High average GDP will benefit majority.
What uneven ? It is pretty good as our minimum wage is higher than Malaysia. It is reasonable for developing countries to still have poor people, but if you see Indonesian cities, mostly people live in houses, not pack in densely populated apartment.
If there had not been an economic crisis that hit in 1999, maybe all ASEAN countries today would be as advanced as Japan and South Korea.
So ASEAN countries that are developed in the future are progress that has been delayed for 30 or 50 years but in time, all ASEAN countries will become developed countries and superpowers in their region because the countries in ASEAN are very blessed by God with abundant natural resources and the friendliness of its people who love peace.

I agree on the prediction of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam while Cambodia and Laos will also see a vast improvement on their economies. As to Philippines, I have great doubt on their ability to move up as predicted. The answer lies simply in its relationship with China. All the former have good ties with China and are China largest trading partners and source of investment. And the trend is continuing. on the other hand, PH leans towards US and China will just ignore PH especially in trading and infrastructure development. Why assist a hostile country? May be US besides just wanting to built all the military bases can step in to provide PH with all the economic and financial assistance like FTA, investment in manufacturing and infrastructure.
Economically we are not dependent to China. We dont rely much on exportation to China😀

Wrong! Philippines is a consumer driven economy not export-oriented. Dependency in China is not necessarily a complete necessity. The world (US, Europe) is moving out of China manufacturing. China with its ageing population and reliance on export will have more issues together with countries dependent on China. You are viewing it as "what was not what will". China peak has already happened. There "One Child" policy doomed them. They will grow old before they become rich. You can only eat and buy so much at a certain age. Think Japan in 1980's but worst.
Say what you like, China GDP is forcasted to grow for the next many years at a handsome rate of 5 to 6% while other major economies are at below 3%. China is the manufacturing hub for the world and with almost 800 million middle income consumers, no one can ignore market, not US, not EU. Yes. Many low end manufacturing is moving away from China which in fact is a deliberate China policy and she is now moving towards more high end products such as EV, AI, Quantum science and bio products. The commentaries are quoting forecasts by other reports. It ignored coming recession. Philippines growth depends partly on infrastructures which basically is financed by China; and Philippines is now confronting China in an unnecessary dispute, so will China pull out ? This will affect its economic growth.

What miracle? What guarantees that GDP will continue to grow at this rate? What are the factors to be able to do that? Japan's GDP has been stagnant for 30 years. China's GDP has begun to not grow as hotly as before. Thai GDP has grown by 2 digits in the past before the financial crisis. And then unable to return to the same growth as before.
