- Hello everyone - this film clip is from “Pirogov" (in Russian: Пирогов) It is a Soviet biopic film directed by Grigori Kozintsev, based on the life of a
Russian scientist and doctor Nikolay Ivanovich Pirogov (1810-1881). Pirogov
is famous for being the founder of field surgery. The film is, given the
political constraints of the time, no masterpiece and its interest lies mainly
in its good music. Shostakovich composed the scores to three such films:
“Pirogov” (1947), “Michurin” (1948) based on the life of Ivan Michurin the
soviet agronomist and “Belinsky” (1950). In common with Belinsky also directed by Kozintsev the score is generally low-key or non-existent through
the film and only on two or three occasions rises to prominence including in the “Waltz” in “Pirogov” recorded by Bel Air Music, replacing here the original
sound-track.
