  • MIAMI -- Four-time Super Bowl champion Joe Montana took some time to sit down with KNBR's Bonnie-Jill Laflin on Saturday, one day before his two former teams square off in Super Bowl LIV.
Montana touched on a number of subjects including his unique relationship with Bill Walsh, and the sense of humor the legendary head coach had even days before his passing. Montana also defended Jimmy Garoppolo, recounted memories from his first Super Bowl appearance in 1981, and gave context to his now famous John Candy story from Super Bowl XXII.

Philly's Phinest you know absolutely shit. I know this because you said a football “enthusiast” knows. If you think think enthusiasm makes you an expert you don’t know what your talking about. Then you go on an emotional angry rant. You never mention any logical argument. Your a blow hard. What credentials do you have? You probably never even played, have no deep understanding of the game other than you may possibly be able to spot out a statistic. I know from being around the football block a very long time that you are clueless just by the way you talk.

Philly's Phinest you only think Montana’s the GOAT because he’s the guy the media has put out there for New England haters to use against Brady. You would use whatever name the media threw out there for you. Unless you are 15 years old you’d never look at any QB as a GOAT. it was not a big topic or concern ever in the NFL. that is until Brady came along. The only people who say someone other than Brady is the GOAT are New England haters, jealous people, emotionally attached to guys they “like better” any numerous other reasons. There is not a single argument for Montana over Brady. There is no category where Montana is better. Not a single one. Joe is not better than Brady at anything except joe can move out of the pocket better. BUT Brady moves much much better in the pocket Other than pocket differences there is literally not 1 skill or intangible that Montana can even make an argument for. There is NOTHING he is better at.
Montana’s not even the 2nd greatest QB. he was just pulled off the shelf of great QB’s because of Super Bowl wins. Haters needed to anoint someone who had the most superbowls hoping Brady wouldn’t get to 5. Montana must be loving this. Brady has gotten him a lot of attention. Believe me before Brady, Joe was not this universally accepted GOAT at all. He was just the guy to rally around with the hope Brady doesn’t win 5 SB’s. Most people looked at Marino, Elway, Manning, Favre, and Unitas as better QB’s.
Seriously I love Montana and my personal attachments are to Joe Namath and Roger Staubach, but this argument is the most open and shut case that has ever existed in the NFL argument of best QB. It is silly to even debate it because it’s so cut and dry. You have to be dumb or green with envy, hate or some other non rational thing to not just come to grips with Brady being the best to have played QB

Wow awesome interview.... Not that i'm bragging about this but i can honestly say that as far as i know i'm the only 49ers fan that sat and had a beer wIth Joe Montana way back in 1983 a week after they lost in the nfc championship against the redskins in Washington D.C. on a bad ref call against Ronnie Lott. It was a week after the game in downtown S.F. at the pyramid building on clay st where my friends and i went to a club that they had in the bottom of the building that i never knew they had there. So anyways as were walking inside to the club we noticed a bunch of people gather around in a section of the floor looking at somebody and we were wondering who it was so we went to check it out and wow that person was Joe Montana sitting in a table with two or three cheerleaders and a few security guards. I decided to walk over to the front of the entry where he entered and i started yelling hey Joe several times next to one of the security guard and i guess he got tired of me yelling so he turned around and looked at me for a couple of seconds and said to me, come on in a talk to me, after that i was like wow really so than the security guard let me in and that's when i sat down with Joe and he asked me for my name and how long i'v being a niners fan and asked me if i wanted a beer and of course i said hell yeah and we talked for about five minutes or so while my friends kept yelling at me to ask him for he's autographed but unfortunately i didn't have a pen or something for Joe to sign but oh well at least i got to meet him. Man that was an incredible night i well never forget and that is God's honest true. Oh and by the way what i most appreciated most is that Joe was so nice and humble God bless him for that and for all the happiness he brought to all Niner fans and S.F. Thank you Joe Montana..... Greatest Of All Time period.....

Never had a basketball team til 90s so i liked the lakers but took on the raptors at birth. Anyhow wish the niners would have continued to RUN THE BALL LOL. The rest is history. If I needed one drive or just one game I'd put my money on Montana.
People forget he was KOd late in the 90/91 NFC title game with the lead with Rice open on the pass he almost got off.
He goes down, Young comes in cold. So just trying to run out the clock, Roger Craig fumbles, Giants recover and drive to kick the game winner.
Montana closes that game out, probably goes 5-0 in SBs and with a 3peat.
Plus, he lost all of 91 and 92 due to that injury.
Imagine what SF could have done during those seasons with a healthy Joe. Then he returns after 2 years and leads a so so KC team to the playoffs twice and an AFC title game. He played when you could kill receivers over the middle, get away with contact past 5 yds down field and when QBs got crushed.
He won 2 SBs before Rice was even drafted.
If Montana stayed healthy and had Walsh for 18 years as Brady has been healthy but for one season and had Belichick 18 years (I excluded 08 when Brady was out) it's unfathomable what Joe coulda done.
In only 7 full seasons as a full time starter with Walsh (82 was strike shortened and he didn't start in 79 and not all of 80) he won 3 of his 4 SBs with an 18-1 season in 84 and he also got screwed in the 83 NFC title game by the refs. 4-0 in SBs, zero interceptions and 127.8 SB passer rating. Joe Montana is the greatest QB of all time.

Forgot where I read this but it bears repeating:
BRADY VS. MONTANA THE GOAT DEBATE
For starters, the GOAT debate is subjective to every fan but there are quantitative "facts of comparison" which help make a case for either player. Let's examine some:
    (1) Montana played a total of 13.5 seasons (11.5 in SF and 2 in KC). He missed 2.5-seasons for injuries suffered in SF (back, leg, & elbow) + half the strike season in 1982. Brady has played his entire 19+ seasons career for NE. He missed 1-season for an injury (foot & knee).
    (2) Brady has never had to change teams and learn an entire New: team, coach, playbook & system. Montana did!
    (3) Brady has never had a fellow HOF QB waiting to take his job (Steve Young) after suffering 2 major injuries which cost him 2-seasons. Montana did!
    (4) The NFL was Absolutely "More Difficult for QB's & WR's in the 1980's" when DB's & LB's could Tee-Off on players w/ low hits, head shots, hand-checks, holding, etc. I call this "The 2000's TREND" which started right when Brady came into the league in 2000 and are a Result of the NFL's "Rule Changes." Brady even benefited from the "tuck-rule" game vs the Raiders which propelled him to win his 1st SB that season. The 2000's TREND is an Observable Trend since 2000 and is "Evidenced" by Following 3 Offensive Records that have Fallen: (1) the Top 10 QB's with the Highest Career Comp % are ALL from the 2000's onward (eclipsing Montana & Young's records), (2) it was once Unthinkable that ANY QB would Ever break Dan Marino's Career Passing Yardage Record but several QB's like Manning, Favre, Brees, Brady, etc. have done that Already and (3) there are far Less Injuries to QB's as a result. [How does this change the game?] The cumulative effect is that QB's have Longer Careers with More Games to rack up Statistics, Wins & Post Season Victories, SB Opportunities. The Rules Decreased injuries (which is good) but they "must be factored into any GOAT debate."
    (5) Brady has a career passing yardage total with 70K yards to Montana's 40K yards, but Note that Brady has had an additional 6.5 seasons of play and The 2000's Trend for an entire career.
    (6) Brady has a Career Pass Comp % of 97.2% to Montana's 92.3%. Again, see the 2000's Trend point #4.
    (7) Brady had the Greatest Placekicker in NFL history in Adam Vinatieri who kicked '3' SB game-winning kicks. All NE's SB victories have been "tight contests" and he came through in those moments. Montana's 49ers teams blew out 2 SB opponents by contrast without needing a last second FG.
    (8) Montana ran the West Coast Offense primarily from the Pro-Set using TB's & FB's often, boot leg's, etc. This requires being under center with 3-5 Step Drops with guys like Lawrence Taylor coming off the end. Imagine IF Brady, Manning, Roethlisberger, Rodgers had to do that over their entire careers? Brady also runs the West Coast Offense but primarily from a Quads-Set '6-yards off the ball' with 4-WR's for quick slants and is more safe from outside blitzes.
    (9) Brady has more SB Wins (6 out of 8) to Montana's (4 out of 4) but Note that Montana was knocked out of an NFC Championship Game vs the NYG's in 1990 which they would have won him his 5th SB that year! Montana took his new team KC to an AFC Championship Game in 1993 but lost.
    (10) Montana had his HOF coach Bill Walsh for Only 8-years (retired 1988), then Seifert 4-years & Schottenheimer 2-years. Brady has had his HOF coach Bill Bilichick for his Entire 19+ years career thus far...
    (11) The opponents in the Patriots division (Bills, Jets & Dolphins) have NOT challenged them for Brady's entire 19+ year career which equates to 6 easy wins a year and all but assures them Home Field Advantage through the AFC Title game and propels them right to the SB! Ask the Steelers, Ravens, Colts, Broncos & Chargers how that feels..
    (12) The final point and 'big take away' is that IF it were only about titles then Bill Russell (11 titles) would be the GOAT over Michael Jordan (6 titles) in basketball but everyone knows that's Not the Case. We have to evaluate players on multiple quantitative comparisons, rule changes, trends and the era they played...
[Conclusion] We must look deeper into the trends of each era and the circumstances of each player being compared (i.e. injuries, time lost, number of coaches, number of teams. different: offenses, rules, standards, career length, etc.). Then a more accurate picture emerges. These 12 points Suggest that Montana is the GOAT !

Joe what advice for Garappalo? Joe can't advise coolness under pressure and trusting yourself. He's in there, he hits that slant on 3rd to Kittle late with the lead, converts the 1st, and eats clock. He doesn't hesitate, allowing the rush time, then look right and throw the ball in the dirt. Mahomes never gets the chance to come back. Clock management, controlled drives with those quick-drop passes. that was Joe. NO HESITATION. He might have overthrown that deep ball too, but he definitely hits Kittle on the slant and converts that first, the key play of the game no one is talking about, because it's a non-play, something that should have happened but didn't. Not the best skill set, undersized and a bit frail in a vicious era, had some awful playoff games where he wasn't concussed or brutalized, but mental toughness and fearlessness, he's top dawg. He can't advise someone to handle pressure and just let go. Can't teach that. Look what happened to Lamar Jackson. Joe Cool can't teach cool

bpc118 not in any way true at all. There is literally no measurement or way of looking at it that would favor joe at all. Look at
      completion %
      TD to INT ratio
      Clutch play
      Super Bowl wins
      Conference championships won
      Conference championships played
Joe had the biggest advantage of all, he was able to play with the same great team intact. Joe had the best wide receiver that ever played. Tom had the best receive of the era for 1 year. Brady had average at best guys
Montana had a great running back, better defenses.
I’m not saying this out of being a “fan”. I’m only looking at this objectively. I don’t have a favorite team, I don’t root for anyone to win any game, I don’t care who wins or losses games, I don’t predict games, or bet on games. I don’t have any presence. I love the game and played through college which was the furthest I was able to play. I watch solely on love of the game. I never watch any game with emotion other than the thrill of seeing a game where both sides play their best. In other words I’m not a fan boy. I understand the game at at a deep level. Emotionally I love Joe Montana. He is part of the Western Pennsylvania Legacy of being the greatest hot bed of superstar quarterbacks. But he just isn’t the GOAT. he had a couple arguments for it that I would concede but that was before Brady. There are a lot of QB’s who could have been just as successful with that team and I think more successful than joe. We will never know that so I won’t speculate. For argument sake I will just anoint him the ore-Brady GOAT. I never ever named a GOAT OF anything before BRADY because it was always such a speculative argument. Brady made that different. Where the era you played in matters is in super bowl wins. That’s the biggest difference. Dynasties existed before. Some of the biggest from 1972 onward were The Steelers winning 4 in 6 years. Dallas played in 5 and won 2 within an 8 year period. Buffalo played in 4 in a row. Dallas won 3 in 4 years in the early to mid 90’s. Since then there has been nothing even resembling one...EXCEPT New England. The thing is that they aren’t just a dynasty like it was for 100 years pre-1995. This dynasty far surpasses any of the previous ones. Surpassing it in a time when there have been no other dynasty type of teams. By far the greatest dynasty in a time we’re the leagues goal was to never have one again.
You see, Joe Montana ONLY laid any claim to being a GOAT because of Super Bowls. Without that he is would have further down the list. Brady change the GOAT argument. It went from Montana being the GOAT of QBs to Brady being the GOAT of every single NFL player at any position and a legitimate argument as greatest
To play any sport. That argument has never been made for any other player before Brady.
Again, I love Montana to death and this is nothing at all to take away from him, it’s just that Before Brady, thinking about a player being a position wide GOAT or GOAT of every sport. Wasn’t something any thought about much. Not saying that if a poll was taken ore-Brady who was the greatest QB was that Joe wouldn’t win the poll. It’s just that it was not anything other than a novelty discussion. Brady changed that. Montana has never been discussed more than now. People hate New England. The people hate Brady because he’s the face of the team they hate. When 1 guy ruins your teams season year after year after year, most people get bitter, so they pull a guy off the shelf who they can make an argument for. And that guy was Montana. Purely because of Super Bowls because the only hope they had was that Brady couldn’t win 5 of them. There is not 1 category that Montana has over Brady. Not a single one. There is no aspect of Montana’s game that is better than Brady’s. Plus I won’t even mention how much Montana needed a specific type of system to thrive in compared to the other greats you can name. EVERY player and team has a system and some players will do better in some than others. What I do know is that Joe is much more reliant on the specific system he was in than Brady ever was. In Brady’s case he IS the system. Montana could not do what Brady’s done in New England. If Brady played on Joes team they would have won MORE Super Bowls.

@@rogerwelsh2335 You are using statistics without any historical context or adjustment. Montana would have been great in any system; only an ignorant fool would argue otherwise. Brady's stats obviously benefited from rule changes and vastly different offensive and defensive schemes. And your point about Brady being more clutch? I call BS. I'm not going to do your homework for you. As such an educated and unbiased fan of football, you obviously understand that Montana's postseason play actually exceeded Brady's when factoring in historical context. Here's an example: Montana's ANY/A is significantly higher than his peers (1.48). Brady's ANY/A (1.34). Bad news -- Montana outshines Brady in the postseason: 1.55 v 1.17.
Note this is based on data from 2 years ago. Brady, let's agree, has not gotten better since.
In short, base your claims on evidence and statistical analysis, not bullshit and superficial observation.

notsodelusional you do know that 2 years ago Brady threw for 505 yds in the super bowl that you left out. A super bowl record. Montana was in bill Walsh’s newly invented west coast. The west coast offense is this easiest offense for a quarterback. He made that offense for this reason. The offense is based on read progressions with as little thinking as possible. It’s 1, 2, 3 Montana will say the same thing. Montana could never just go out and win it on his own. He was nowhere near Marino or elway in that department for sure.
Did you know that Brady averages going to the Super Bowl every other year? Every other year! You’d have to be a Brady hater to not understand how unbelievable that is. Actually it should not even be possible. He had way less talent. And I mean way less talent. Since you’re all into this historical perspective, Brady played in a waaay more competitive league. Night and day more competitive.
You started spewing out a couple of stats then take this leap to say it’s obvious and somehow overwhelming. I’m not typing out a zillion numbers and showing you comparisons because you can do this on you own Look at career stats. I think you just looked at the super bowl itself. What kind of way is that to judge? Look at career numbers and %. Brady’s has had to win so many games for his team. Not just last drives of the game but win the game itself on his own shoulders. It doesn’t matter. Anyone who lives in 2020 and does not see that Brady is so clearly better than ANYONE just clouded by a dislike for him or his team. I mean Montana’s not the 2nd best. I’d take Manning, Elway, Marino and definitely the guy who took Joes starting job Steve Young! Young was much much better than Montana. Again it’s as simple as just this 1 simple fact, Brady wins a conference championship and goes to a super bowl every other year! That’s 9 Super Bowl games in 18 years as a starter. Does that not sink in? Do you know how’d you use that stat if joe did that. I can’t imagine if that was something Montana did. Believe me if this was a QB other than a QB who plays for the patriots you would have moved on from Montana way before now. If it wasn’t for Brady you never would have thought about Montana anyway. Montana was pretty much propped up by Brady haters anyway because he was the only QB who had something that Brady didn’t. The only remaining possible thing the haters could hold onto, 4 Super Bowl wins. Bradshaw also has 4 Super Bowl wins. But Brady goes out and wins 6. 33% more super bowl wins.
You’ll never get it. I know the type and was crazy to take on another hater

@@rogerwelsh2335 I'm not a hater. I love Brady; I'm simply don't think he is a great as Montana, and for that you call me a hater? Take a look in the mirror, man. He played in a different time when it was easier to pass. Do you deny that difference? Why do you think Brady has had such longevity? In part because QBs are surrounded by bubble wrap. There's one reason Brady has been to nine SBs. It rhymes with Belichick. Now he truly is the GOAT.
The fact that you rate Marino, Elway, and Young, all of whom I love, and are acknowledged as all-time greats truly weakens your argument. Why do you have to diminish the greatness of one person to make your incorrect case? I have not said one negative thing about Brady. Why? Because he is an all-time great, and there evidence that he is the greatest.
Also: "If it wasn’t for Brady you never would have thought about Montana anyway." What the hell are you talking about?
I'm done as well with people who use statistics in a haphazard fashion out of context, and who project feelings and beliefs that simply do not exist. Good luck living in your fantasy world.
