1911 Winsor McCay - "Little Nemo" (full animation in color)

- Winsor McCay was an amazing illustrator with a great eye for perspective and volume, as showcased in his groundbreaking first animation. He seems to have made a point of having his characters and props tumble and turn in all directions through a white space, of which only a floor is occasionally indicated by the appearance of shadows. The dream theme of Nemo's adventures was well-known from his appearance in the comic pages of newspapers since 1905 and leads to some surprising effects in this film, such as the funhouse mirror sequence and Impie's entrance as several cylinders and slices that fall from the sky into his usual shape. Somewhat less successful is McCay's use of the stop trick that had been popularised by Georges Méliès (soon after 0:12 in the video), which turns out much less magical in animation than in most of the cinematographic examples.
Although some great (but short) animation loops had been created for stroboscopic discs and zoetropes since 1833, very little animation of high quality had been made since the invention of the movies, apart from lithographed films for toy magic lanterns (which were mostly traced from live-action footage). The initial appeal of the movies was the photographic detail that was almost impossible to create in drawn animation, so there was little incentive to get drawn motion pictures in cinema while cinematography was still a novelty. After Émile Cohl's 1908 breakthrough "Fantasmagorie" had proven that cinematic animation could be worthwhile, McCay's work really set a very high standard and can easily compete with most hand-drawn animation that has been done ever since (especially concerning "ligne claire" type animation, while especially Disney would work on getting more detail and shading in high quality colourful animation).
This animation was the centre piece of a 10 minute film entitled "Winsor McCay, the Famous Cartoonist of the N.Y. Herald and His Moving Comics". The other 8 minutes involve McCay making a wager to produce 4000 drawings within 2 months and make them move, and some staged comical scenes about the process. This live-action story was directed by J. Stuart Blackton, who earlier made "Humorous Phases of Funny Faces" (released in 1906 and regarded as the very first animation by some historians, but at best the first theatrically released animation on 35mm film).
The version presented here is sometimes said to have been hand-coloured by McCay himself, but according to other sources he paid to have his prints colored. Believing that the latter is correct, it is tempting to imagine that McCay himself would have worked a tiny bit more precise and would have managed to avoid the somewhat patchy, flickering elements that are quite visible when paying attention to such details. However, it seems hard to improve on this colouring job if one considers how small 35mm film frames actually are and how tedious it must be to colour 4000 of them.
In this video some cuts have been made to the repetitive footage that McCay looped back and forth in the original film. By doing so, he probably cheated a bit on his claim of having made 4000 drawings for the movie... - Фільми й анімація
McCay created comics for the newspapers, but in my eyes he was a true artist. One of my top 5.
It's so awesome to see that people with no new technology animating stuff created such amazing movements with complicated antomy that is close to real while nowadays with all the technology we have cartoon animators are making more basic characters and barley moving them
they started as artists first and did animations second. Modern animators start with animation instead of getting great with drawing first.
Hard to believe this was made before the Titanic sunk
And World War 1
Also Before World War 1 !!!
and before the queen was born
No it isn't...
@@scottl.1568 um yeah it was
Absolutely incredible. Messing with perspectives and stretching characters out, truly a pioneer and creator of modern techniques used to this day
Windsor McCay had an *amazing* talent and skill for drawing in 3D space. Few, even much later, could match his ability for a feeling of solidity to his animation.
Nothing compares to hand-drawn animation :)
😶you are alive
😂😂😂😂😂😂
It's gold... It's the first ever animation & it's absolute gold!
You might want to check out some of the many animations that were made long before 1911. You can find quite a few here, on the Magical Media Museum channel.
@@magicalmotionmuseum oh, thank you - I will!
I'm 1896 Blackton created with Thomas Edison "humurous phases of funny faces" I don't know if we'll ever know which one was the first, but this is the oldest I know.. (Without counting flipping pages, or pranxinoscopes, or zoetropes, but yeah....)
There were animations going back to the 19th century.
fantasmagorie 1908
so you see, many people call "Winsor McCay" the Grandfather of Animation!
Great grandfather
Guys I don't think you realize how good this is. This motion is so smooth, aside from where he purposely did those mid-motion jump cuts (a live action technique from the time to make motions look snappier. Does NOT work in animation, but it's a learning process). It's so smooth it looks rotoscoped even though I'm fairly sure it isn't? (Correct me if I'm wrong)
Anyway, it blows my mind. Like look at when the dragon turns and you see the perspective smoothly shift. You know how much of a flex that is? It might not look it to the untrained eye, but anyone who's done hand-animation or just 2D art in general knows that shit's IMPOSSIBLE to get right. I'm blown away that this is from over a hundred years ago.
Also the beginning segment makes me think of Gorillaz and I fuck with that heavy.
@Fredrick Bagguette
Why you gotta diminish it my dude? Just let people appreciate stuff lol
this is simply one of the most beautiful things I've seen in my life in the world of animation,W. McCay... what an artist !
I just realized you could still be alive when this came out which is insane.
How the fuck could they do this in 1911
it's not 'they'. Winsor Mckay was genius
Big lip Troll Illiterate people are not retarded.
Carefully.
It was a lot harder to make something like this in 1911 than it is now.
He's obviously just impressed with what they did with limited technology, no need to be smug.
Impressive, beautiful and somewhat unnerving. Thanks for sharing!
I cant belive the movie is still rememberd for over 109 years
True art never truly dies

This film, blew away all that watched it!
And really kickstarted the animation industry!
A great artist ahead of his time, who changed the concept of animation at the time
I personally consider it the real starting point for the animation from this artist
WOW, for 1911 this is cutting edge animation!!!:D I could easily think this was one of those animation shorts on a 1970s Sesame Street episode!
هل انت حي؟ 😂

The animation in this is actually really good and smooth
that clown looks like a character from 2003
This is amazing! Incredibly well done! Especially considering the time and the limitations of the technology! I want to see more!
This needs a 4K UHD release.
It has been 122 years since this was made, and boy is it a good animation. It soon gets better later on in the future.
There may have been animations made before this one. But Winsor McCay definitely showed that animation could be cinema!
better than nickelodeon
Worse
Not as good but up there.
@@Neptune5111.1WRONG.

@@FILIOUS_DEO_FRATER_UT_SATANAS I’m talking about 1990’s Nickelodeon
What the heck that's too good
McCay was born and raised in Ypsilanti, MI. Old local newspapers mention his name as far back as April 1888 (age 16), a notice of a lecture on crayon drawing given at the Milan Opera House. Uh, in Milan, MI. In May, he made news by being a bicyclist, one of the very few there. And in June, the "lighting sketch and chalk talk artist" filled a local hall by illustrating Darwin's descent of man with live drawings. So he had local fame early on.
Thank you for sharing this piece of history, this piece of art.
Since childhood, I try to remind myself to watch Little Nemo every few years. It's a well done anime.
Never thought to look up the history, and for sure didn't know anything about Winsor McCay. Brilliant artist/animator.
Beautiful!
wow, i keep wondering if the person who commented this is still alive.
amazing.
I loved the movie little nemo when I was a kid. I didnt realize it wasn't the original though. When I found out not only did it have an original but it also is the oldest cartoon ever I was actually blown away!
Amazing hands 👏McCay was a genius
A cartoon from 113 years ago looks better that most UA-cam animations.
Hard to believe this was made in 1911
They needed only paper and pencils! :3
Isnt that what drawing is for?
This Style Is Nice
The comics are absolutely amazing
Fleischer needed a rotoscope just to imitate this.
McCay drew this all by hand. No copy tools needed.
I think the stencil gel color process was used on this.
It took cigars sweat and boos to make this masterpiece
Little Nemo got his start here then got his own full movie later on
Now i understand more the video, Runnin' Down a Dream by Tom Petty
I wish I could do that!
Amazing!!!!!!!
are you alive
LOL this is trippy
111 years old
About 100 years old, made by 1 man and yet still looks better then Hamster & Gretal’s abomination
No need for Disney, no need for anime, no need for cg, no need for flash, just Windsor McCay.
Why does the green guy remind me of 2d from gorillaz
Your username made me laugh a bit but I don't know why
little dreamer the guy in the first little bit smoking. Doesn't he give off 2D vibes?
At the very beginning it says "watch me move"
Why?

@@vladdimmirnaggelly08cityof63 It was the latest thing at the time. Animation was a marvel in 1911
I think this looks better than the cartoons that came after it during the late 1910's and 1920's. Surprised squash and stretch is in a 1911 animation.
Oh Wow This-

The Most Popular Cartoon In 1920s
Really? 9 to 19 years after its release? More popular than Felix and Mickey? Do you have any sources about the popularity of this cartoon?
Well little nemo was released in 1910s and being popular in 1920s. But little nemo is not popular cuz the tom and jerry was released in 1940s and became popular.
@@magicalmotionmuseum wait gimme me a second
Well mickey mouse was released in 1920s so its not popular. Also, mickey mouse was popular in 1938 after little nemo, but mickey mouse was not popular in 1940s cuz tom and jerry was released in 1940s and became popular than mickey mouse.
If I was going to have a Draconic Crocodile as a riding horse essentially it wouldn't be in the crocodiles mouth just saying
The full cartoon is 11 minutes
As explained in the description, the video here shows all the animation that the original movie contains, except for some repeated footage that seemed only included in order to more easily get a certain number of frames. The other circa 9 minutes of the original short show a live-action spiel about McCay betting that he can make 4000 drawings move within a month.
Is a color cartoon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
No need for Copic markers.

Is this what Finding Nemo was named after? You know, because he wears orange-and-white stripes?
No, the fish was named after the submarine captain. Both the submarine captan and the sleeping kid are named after the Latin word "Nemo" which means "nobody".
That's interesting. In Japanese, in some cases, "Dare nimo" means 'nobody.' And 'Nimo' sounds like Nemo.
De Ha yeah Captain Nemo from 20,000 Leagues under the Sea
Dark fact is that all the people who created this animation are all dead...
😂😂😂
Why are all the characters so weird
whould be better if i knew what the hell is going on
drugs
Lots of cigars sweat and boos
America be like
Damn I didn’t know people were dropping acid back then
Not sure if McCay used any, but when did you think artists and audiences started using psychedelic drugs? It is believed that many paleolithic cave paintings (circa 40kya to 10kya) were made in hard to reach places because of the psychedelic effects of poor air, fumes of light-sources (probably lamps with animal fat), exhaustion, disorientation and who knows what else. Paleolithic arts are often associated with shamanistic rituals that in turn are often associated with psychedelic drugs, like ayahuasca.
It would be better if it had audio
Bette Early in the 1910s There was no talkies or audio until 1928 The First Film to have sound was Mickey Mouse Steamboat Willie. Other cartoons or Movies had sound until 1929
@@22snazario - There were actually a couple of films that experimented with synchronized sound prior to 1928, but as far as I can remember, the earliest instance of this was around 1925.
