    I have the 2013 MS261, about 4 cords firewood per year. I do not use 50:1, about 45:1fuel mix. I have been thinking about a muffler mod. but the cautious side of me says be content with a stock saw. Just recently had the original 18" bar edge ground flat and the chain groove resized at a Stihl dealer. On my 3rd .325 23 RS Pro chain.
    I agree this saw is not made for heavy duty milling.

      I don't think there's too much of a gain with a muffler mod for the 261, some bigger saws perhaps, but then it could also be matched with porting. Though stock they run well and are reliable. Milling should only really be done with 80cc saws and higher.

    I just bought a new ms261cm last week.
    It's a great saw, but definitely not made for milling.

      Yes a highly rated saw by many people and I don't know what the previous owner was thinking to use it for milling. Milling needs a saw of at least 80cc as it's very stressful for the saw.

    I was hoping to see how you got the flywheel off and how you pulled apart the saw. I'm curious to why you cut away from these parts?

    • @WilkoinFrance
      @WilkoinFrance  4 місяці тому

      I removed the flywheel using the incorrect way with a screwdriver wedged begind the flywheel and hitting the crankshaft with a rubber hammer whilst having a nut on the crankshaft thread so it wouldn't fly off. This is not the "right" way to do this, so I didn't include it in the video, as there's a risk of damaging the flywheel, crankshaft or case. Same with splitting the crankcase using a rubber hammer on the shaft whilst holding one side of the crankcase until they separated. The right way would be to use a crankcase splitting tool, which I don't have. There is a risk of damaging the crankshaft or case. I did not want a whole list of comments about the incorrect procedure, so cut it out.

    hi ! i have a new 261 and after running it for about 10 tanks with stihl hp ultra oil on 40:1 ratio the top of the piston is completly black...is this normal or anything wrong? spark plug is the right color...saw is running very well but didn`t expect that to happen so fast and also little bit of build up on the exhaust port

    • @WilkoinFrance
      @WilkoinFrance  Рік тому

      Hi, in my opinion the black on top of the piston is quite normal, this happens quite quickly. The build-up of the exhaust port can be due to leaving the saw idling long or if it's running a bit rich. But if you have the m-tronic version carburetor it's auto adjusting. Although lots of information states that Stihl equipment runs on 50:1 mix, but the difference between 40:1 and 50:1 is minimal, so that shouldn't be a problem. You can always ask a dealer to be sure.

      The Stihl “Ultra” premix is a JASO FB rating. It’s not premium and there are better pre mix oils out there. I personally use Maxima super M. It has a higher rating then any pre mix oils I’ve researched so far. The only thing I don’t like is the fact that it’s too clear when mixed. Just add some ultra to it and it’ll get the color

    Did this saws throttle lock on to use the choke on cold start like some other stihl saws? Or did you only have to squeeze the throttle to get it to go down to full choke? I rebuilt mine and it fires but won't run.

    • @WilkoinFrance
      @WilkoinFrance  2 роки тому

      I believe that I had to squeeze the throttle, then put the tab to the choke position and thereby it locked the throttle and choke in one position, then once started I moved the tab to the next position and then squeeze the throttle and let go for it to go back to idle. But I may be wrong as this was about a year ago and as it had lots of engine damage I didn't look at that mechanism really.

      @@WilkoinFrance thanks for the reply :)
      On this model the throttle doesn't lock wide open like most stihl models... just have to squeeze in order for use of full choke...
      I figured out that the previous owner that straight gassed it.... decided to adjust all 3 fuel mixture screws thinking it wasnt blown lol so once I found baseline it fired right away and I tuned it from there.... saw maybe has 20hrs on it looks like new... one man's trash is another man's treasure lol pro saw to boot.

    • @WilkoinFrance
      @WilkoinFrance  2 роки тому

      Yes often if something doesn't run right the first thing people do is try to adjust the mixture and then if it still doesn't run it usually gets thrown out. You had a lucky find then, as the saw in the video was used for milling, which it is not designed for as such it overheated and destroyed many engine parts.

    • @ryanxcr800

      @@WilkoinFrance yes thats too bad as the 261 is a good saw but definitely not powerful enough for milling. A good all around saw for bucking and cutting smaller trees.

      @@WilkoinFrance thanks I figured it out ended up being the fuel screws were all over the map due to when they straight gassed it they thought playing with fuel settings would bring it back to life lol

    Yo, I took my 261 to a Stihl dealer repair shop and the mechanic told me the crank shaft is worn and it's better to buy a new saw than replace. Quoted an extortionate sum for repair. Any advice? I'm currently trying to repair it myself, as it's in very good condition and only a few yrs old...

    • @WilkoinFrance
      @WilkoinFrance  8 місяців тому

      That's the problem with Stihl parts being usually very expensive. Making it almost cheaper to buy a whole new saw. There are a few options either finding a second hand 261 and swapping parts over or on eBay you can find aftermarket cranks, bearings, seals or perhaps a good used one on a marketplace. eBay Germany has a seller that deals in aftermarket parts for Stihl only they have a 261 crank (known as a Kurbelwelle in German) for 54 euros plus postage, no idea of the quality, but I have not had any problems with their parts in the past.

    What's the little sponge but next to the sprocket

    • @WilkoinFrance
      @WilkoinFrance  Рік тому

      If you mean the sponge at 1:25, it's just a foam insert to cover the AV mount where the tank handle joins to the crankcase.

    I've run saws exactly like that one and they are capable of doing any kind of cutting this must just have been an isolated incident with this saw

    • @WilkoinFrance
      @WilkoinFrance  2 роки тому

      This saw was abused, it had been pushed too far milling as clutch showed signs of overheating, rest all point too signs of over worked also the milling bar was bent.
