This job of clutch free play adjustment on the Ford Model A was an adjustment that had to be made occasionally on all manual transmission cars with the procedure differing on the make and model of car. It is likely that this video is the first time some young people have ever heard about a clutch free play adjustment. That's right. You and I grew up in much different times though. I'm introducing the world's best automobile to a whole new generation, man. And it is very rewarding!
Many manual transmission big rigs still require adjustment. Procedure is easy despite their size. With clutch depressed, there is a bolt with a spring loaded sleeve on the clutch plate itself. Just reach up through the inspection cover and turn it as needed. 1 1/2" is just about right for them. It is funny how pretty much all clutches have the same general idea on Freeplay and how to adjust.
I usually agree with you on most things Paul, but this time I’m afraid I can’t. Making Model A’s cool again? My friend, Model A’s have ALWAYS been cool! Looking forward to 200 more!

Another great, helpful video, Paul. Thanks for sharing. In a future version of it, or in a future Q&A, I think it would be helpful for Model A owners to understand how often they should check and adjust this Free Play, does the Free Play get bigger or smaller as the car is driven and the clutch wears, and what are the consequences of failing to adjust it when needed.
Helpful video. I put that screw adjuster in mine. Works good but real sensitive. Sorry to see that Tudor go. I get a feeling you are too a little bit. That's a real nice car. The good news is, we did finally come together and are friends again, for the sake of the hobby. And I'm thankful.
Paul thanks for panning your future radio restoration shelves, If I may ask what is the 19 inch rack mount gray military looking device, Is it a Single-channel receiver for remote site radio link?
@@ModelA after the dropped valve, went for a fully rebuilt engine. 6.1 head, modern valves, shell bearings …. The list of adjustments, settings and fettling seems endless. Then to really enjoy the car, and my overdrive.
Hello Paul, I have a question. Living in California as you do I know they are sticklers on emissions. What my question is do you have to have emissions devices on those old fords? I remember years ago someone told me that they had a 60’s model VW in California and they had to have something on that. Thank you. Robin
The state doe have some tough laws, but itis the counties that add more laws on top of the state laws that make it unbearable in some places. Luckily, I live in one of, if not the most, conservative county in tue state. The county does not add its own laws. Therefore, if you live in my county, and the vehicle is 1974 or newer, you have to get it smogged when you purchase it only. Never again. Since my cars are pre-1974, no smog required at purchase or ever. With that said, I have had a Model A on a smog machine and they are surprisingly clean.
We will miss your car in up coming videos 😢. I just don’t know how you can sell a member of the family like that. I hope I never have to make that decision ever I’d probably be an amputee before selling. Tho I do have a sweet restored 26 I would part with for another A. Thanks for the video. 200 a good number 200 more I say. 😊
Good day Mr. Shinn, I followed your clutch adjustment on both of my cars. Having said that, I just bought a 1930 Standard Coupe' that was restored many years ago but only has just over 1400 mile on it. My truck worked perfectly after the adjustment but the coupe' gears keep grinding when I try to shift. I have done the double clutching and tried at different speeds but it is like I have no clutch at all. I went further and moved the adjustment more turns up but that just made the clutch slip all the time. I sure would appreciate any advice you might be able to pass on to me even though I know it's hard when you are not here to see the car. I have been in Model A's for over fifty years and this is the firs time I have run across this. Many thanks, Clinton
@@ModelA, Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I will adjust the clutch as per your video and do that check. As I watch your video again I have taken note of the distance your foot comes off the floorboards before the car starts to move and use that as a bench mark. I will also do the same with my 28 Closed Cab Pickup for a comparison and get back with you. I am also running the 1500 weight oil in the gearbox and differential which I just did the fluid change and lubed the complete car. I haven't driven her as yet with the exception of going down the street to check adjustments. Again Mr. Shinn, thank you for your time. Your are very kind, Clinton PS The clutch is very heave much heaver than my other Model A. I put it down to being a restoration with only 1400+ miles. What do you think?
Hey Clinton, Glad to help. The clutch being heavy means something is not right, binding, or in need of lubrication. Or, maybe you're used to the V8 clutch? You need someone familiar with stock Model As to check out your car. With a new clutch, the clutch should start to grab just a little after the half-way point. With a good clutch that has some miles on it, grab starts about the half-way point in travel. With a worn out clutch, it starts to grab right off the floor. All the best!
Just an FYI Paul my Granddaddy worked for Fords till He retired and the story He told was that he helped develop the electric starter, (allegedly) this is when I was a wee lad back in the early 50’s and he was already retired. I have no proof of it but why would my grandpappy tell stories to his grandkids if they weren’t true.
@@ModelA thank you so much for your prompt response. I’ve been watching all your videos, since I was gifted my fathers 1930 Model A Ford Tudor he owned for over 40 years. I can’t thank you enough for the information and visual mentoring you’ve given me.
Paul, what ya' know about '29 Packard clutch adjustment? I've been on every forum on the web with no help. Restored '29 633 Club Sedan, about 1,800 miles on it since a ground-up resto done by a professional classic shop in Minnesota (I'm in Louisiana, bought the car two years ago), I've never been able to get the clutch in a happy place. The clutch pedal feels like a dead fish, clutch engages when the pedal is about 3" off the toe board, you've gotta' put it on the floor to shift. I used to drive these things all the time (and Model A's), never had one act like this. Have tried messing with the adjusting rod endlessly, no matter where I put it, this is all I get. Is it possible they put the lever to the fork to the throwout bearing on in the wrong position? Can't find anyone else that will send me a photo of theirs. Your videos are fantastic, I grew up with Model A's. Thanks much!
Thank you so much! I am truly sorry, I don't know squat about Packards. All I know is Model As, literally nothing else. I'm not a car guy, just a Model A guy.
How did you make the adjustment adjustment without getting grease on your shirt. For me any foreign material within arms length is automatically attracted to my closing.
do you have any ideas on how i can convert my 1930 plymouth sedan 8 bolt wooden spoked wheels over to steel wheels; i would like to have a wider tire ride on my car do they make a conversion kit;
@Paul What is the color codes for this particular Tudor. it matches what mine is. Also is it an 'Original' Color offered at the time. Mine as you know is a 1929 Tudor
Сдаётся мне, что у самого Генри Форда модель А сверкала не так сильно, как у Пола Шина. It seems to me that Henry Ford's own Model A did not sparkle as much as Paul Sheen's.
Paul you shouldn't have revealed the fact that you are using UAV footage that you made. It appears that your UAV may be under the 250 gramm limit and you're flying indoors and you wouldn't have to register it with the FAA. BUT since you have received monetary compensation the FAA considers you are using the UAV (UNMANNED AIRIAL VEHICLE) in the furtherance of a business. Stupid I know but the FAA has screwed up the whole rc modeling hobby ! Since that has occurred you are now breaking the law! You are required to get a part 107 pilots license! And may have to register the UAV (Drone) even though you were flying indoors and definitely if you fly outdoors. Very sad.
Thank you for sharing. I figured this comment would come up eventually. I am a patriotic American who opposes the trendy shift to socialism and oppression. I would rather die than give in to the new socialist FAA rules for flying model aircraft. That's why I quit the AMA after many decades as a member. If the FAA wants to come on my property and pull their "I'm the government, bow before me and respect my authority" garbage, they are in for a big fight. I have been flying Model airplanes for 50 years. If they think they can stop me, let them try. Those commies can go pound sand. They have no idea how hard I will fight.

For many years, I have has an idea in the back of my mind for an O scale or similar outdoor railroad on our property. Maybe if you ever find yourself in my area, could you please have a look at the property and let me know if it is a good idea or if I should stop thinking about it?
CONGRATULATIONS ON 200 videos!!!!!! I knew there was something other than your videos I liked about you, I won’t say what it is but it has to do with having a brain on certain regulatory agencies. 😉. (I read the comments). Great video as always and please keep them coming. I admire the way you do business and act especially after a recent video about an engine,,,,,,. I’m definitely in your camp on that issue. Not trying to get a response just letting you know you are supported.
Thank you, my friend! Yea, that engine.... Well, one is no longer allowed to be honest anymore without being cancelled. Or, at least being bullied. But, I will only speak the truth, always.
VHF power amplifier. Soon to be modified for 2m.
Paul that Car is so very beautiful in every way....l see some radio stuff...My call sign in Ham Radio was W4-UVT....Thanks Paul......

Here’s to 200 more Paul! We appreciate all of them. I don’t think I’ve checked adjustment on my clutch so this is great
Thank you for being part of it!
good info. and very nice car. Have a great week.👍
Amazing. Guess what I have to do tomorrow before starting my new engine for the first time????
Lube the distributor?
@@ModelA American humour? Love it.
@@Daddyfixit Yes! Haha
@@ModelA after the dropped valve, went for a fully rebuilt engine. 6.1 head, modern valves, shell bearings …. The list of adjustments, settings and fettling seems endless.
Then to really enjoy the car, and my overdrive.
@@Daddyfixit About time. Good work!
Hello Paul, I have a question. Living in California as you do I know they are sticklers on emissions. What my question is do you have to have emissions devices on those old fords? I remember years ago someone told me that they had a 60’s model VW in California and they had to have something on that. Thank you.

I use a jack to push the cluch lever up to put the pin back in . I'm not as strong as u.
I’m gonna miss your 2 door! While you were adjusting the clutch I wondered if anyone has had a stone go through their battery case
Yes.
Probably not.
Thanks Brenda! I have a couple more Model As on the way, so I need the space. Don't worry, never selling the fordor or the sport coupe.
Many thanks,
Clinton
When the freeplay is adjusted out, where (how far off the floor) does the clutch start to catch? Might just be a worn out clutch disc.
Your are very kind,
Clinton
PS The clutch is very heave much heaver than my other Model A. I put it down to being a restoration with only 1400+ miles. What do you think?
Hey Clinton,
Glad to help.
Hi Paul!
My clutch spring is missing on my Model A Ford Tudor. I have the part, but don’t know how or where to install it. 🤭
Clutch springs goes inside the bell housing. One end connects to the throwout bearing carrier, the other to the housing.
@@ModelA Well, you do it well! Thanks man and keep the videos coming!
How did you make the adjustment adjustment without getting grease on your shirt. For me any foreign material within arms length is automatically attracted to my closing.
I try to keep the car clean. But it doesn't always work out.
do you have any ideas on how i can convert my 1930 plymouth sedan 8 bolt wooden spoked wheels over to steel wheels; i would like to have a wider tire ride on my car do they make a conversion kit;
Sorry, I have no idea
@Paul What is the color codes for this particular Tudor. it matches what mine is. Also is it an 'Original' Color offered at the time. Mine as you know is a 1929 Tudor
It is Chichle drab and Copra drab, both are Ford factory colors
@ModelA thank you so much paul
Hello from Brasil.
Just a quick question, but nothing about the clutch, but why are the taillights not in the center of the fenders?
The left one is factory. The right one is aftermarket. That's just where they go.
Where did you get the oiler bottle?
I don't remember. I have dozens of them from a long time ago.
Tack!
Oh, WOW!! Thank you SO MUCH!!!!!
That's it ?! Just... two little turns? UAU, so Simple !!
It was already pretty close, so it didn't take much. I just want the car to be perfect for the new owner.
Do you need to double clutch a model a
When downshifting, yes
Thx!!!!
Wlcm!!
I did that on my ford model a?
Сдаётся мне, что у самого Генри Форда модель А сверкала не так сильно, как у Пола Шина.
It seems to me that Henry Ford's own Model A did not sparkle as much as Paul Sheen's.
Super👍😎
Your giving up Gandolf The Green?! Noooo!😟
Yea, looks like it.

Paul, that's her opinion and what does she know? (Please don't ask her) haha
Haha
You need a third hand/arm for that job.
Yes, but she was busy with her chickens
What's with that last 1 minute of goofy shots of your storage shelves?
My first drone flight. Was trying to video the car. I need practice.
@@ModelA No problem :)
I also now realize that my shelves are in dire need of reorganization.
@@ModelA You're not the only one who has this problem! My shop shelves are in dire need of reorganization too.
You would be crying if you crashed it and chipped the car for sure. 😭 living kinda risky there Paul.
I had faith in my R/C skills
Was wondering why you don’t talk about the model T with the different between them . I’ve watched about 90% of your videos and I wish I could own one . Love these old gals thank you
