I cannot figure out why there are ANY thumbs down on this video. This guy does a great job of explaining what to do for those of us who have never had this kind of door knob.
The only kind I've ever seen until my new house is the kind that you just push a button inside. My husband and I both dinked around with it before I finally decided to Google it. Thanks for posting!

This really saved me from calling a locksmith or panicking worse than I already was. I had put my little dog in the bedroom so she wouldn't run out while I was bringing in groceries. I had no idea the door lock button was pressed. When I went to let the dog out, I was surprised the door was locked. I was pushing and pushing with a paper clip, but it wouldn't budge. I had no idea some of these doors have screw-like mechanisms. I happened to have one of those eyeglass screwdrivers handy, so I struggled with it for awhile, and finally it opened -to my and my dog's relief. I'm so grateful that you posted this video!

@@Tony-vh9oe It is called a "door knob emergency key". You can also just buy a small standard screwdriver (like what you would use when repairing eyeglasses).

If you don't have a small screwdriver, we used to hammer the end of a coat hanger flat into a screwdriver. Works well and is fast and free.

If you don't have any of these tools, you can disassemble a pen and use the long, thin, straw looking piece inside that contains the ink (don't know what the proper term for it is, it literally looks like a coffee straw) to poke into the hole and open the door. Everyone has pens laying around. It works a lot easier with ones that have a twist-off cap. I remember my cousin showing me this about 30 years ago and thought I was so cool haha.

If you don’t have the tools you can also use a plastic fork. Just break off one of the ends and if the end is to thin just break a little more off because it gets thicker as you go up.

Started to freak out that my bedroom door somehow closed and locked behind me, nearly tore off the handle, but then calmed down, did a You Tube search, found this video, shaped a paperclip like the lock tool, started wiggling and jiggling it in the handle opening, and about three minutes later I opened the door and walked into my bedroom.
