I'm confused. Why do you need to put every client to the DNS server in your /etc/host file? Shouldn't dnsmasq do that for you? Wouldn't that be the point of setting this up?

Thanks, I have a ER7206 that doesn't have a built in DDNS server connect to it DHCP server. Any way to get a remote/cloud DNSMasq to auto update from DHCP server? Something every cheap Linksys/Netgear router can do out of the box.

Hi Joe, great video, at 6:48, you put in name-1 and server-2 into /etc/hosts, is there any way to avoid that? Can dns-masq pick up that info from each client's hostname + IP address instead? Ideally I don't want to manually enter in every new system in my home lab into my /etc/hosts on my nameserver?

Thanks. I'm only using a subset of Dnsmasq's functionality here. If you turn on DHCP, it might automatically register A records for the DHCP addresses that it hands out, although I've not tried this and I'm kinda being lazy during the Christmas holidays.
If you are statically assigning addresses to hosts rather than using DHCP, then that would be a task that could be automated with a bit of scripting to turn your static host record in, for example, a CVS file, into an updated /etc/hosts file. Not particularly helpful if you can't code, but if you ever come across a task like this that seems burdensome, the answer is usually that sysadmins would script it.

Big greetings. Thanks for the excellent tutorial. I have a question. How do we allow the dnsmasq to respond to devices that are not on its local network? I hope for a quick answer. Thank you a lot. :)

isn't possible. dnsmasq only works for connections in the LAN network
